LINCOLN LIBRARY NOW OPEN The new Lincoln Library and Service Centre opened to the public on Tuesday 4 February. The new $3.7 million Library and Service Centre on Gerald Street replaces the old library and service centre and is more than three times larger than that building. Lincoln has been one of the fastest growing towns in Selwyn and the old library did not have enough space for the library collection to expand or to host events in demand at libraries such as pre-schoolers programmes and adult book clubs. The new building has plenty of space which allows more books to be displayed, and has a bigger space for events and activities like storytime sessions. It also has comfortable seating for people to relax and enjoy a book, historical images of Lincoln on glass display
panels and more computers. The building meets all seismic design standards. Public access computers will not be available for use until Saturday 8 February, but all other library services are operating. Residents from across Selwyn are invited to visit the new library. Anyone who is a member of any Selwyn library is able to check out and return books to the Lincoln library. If you’re not a member of the library, it’s easy to join – just bring along a form of photo ID (like a driver’s licence or passport) and proof of your address (such as a bill with your name and address on it). The old library and service centre building will be removed from the existing site in mid-February and will be used by the Selwyn Wairewa Youth Trust in Lincoln as a youth facility.

TE WAIHORA/LAKE ELLESMERE BIRD CENSUS FOR 2014 Around 50 - 60,000 birds are expected to be recorded in the annual survey of Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere. Last year a group of dedicated bird watchers, with the cooperation of the lake margin landowners, surveyed the full extent of the lake edge and counted over 55,000 birds. This year’s census of the lake will take place on Saturday February 22nd 2014, and teams of volunteers and staff will be out from early morning. Hunters targeting Canada Geese should avoid visiting the lake on this day, both for the safety of the counters and also because teams of people will be moving around the lake which will disturb the birds. Te Waihora is the single most important habitat in New Zealand in terms of recording the greatest number of bird species at any one location, with 167 species having been recorded. The 2014 census will attempt to count all wetland birds on or around the shoreline of the lake and will involve around 40 - 50 individuals, many of them volunteers from the Ornithological
Society of NZ, Waihora Ellesmere Trust and Rotoract, along with staff from the Department of Conservation, Christchurch City Council, Fish and Game North Canterbury, Environment Canterbury, and Ngāi Tahu. They are still looking for more enthusiastic and fit volunteers so, if you are interested in getting involved, contact Adrienne at Waihora Ellesmere Trust. The census is part of an ongoing monitoring programme for the lake and its environs and will help report on the changing status of a number of indicator species including some threatened and at risk species and species that migrate to the lake from the Northern Hemisphere. Some of the collected data, i.e., trends in numbers of wrybill plover at the lake, will be used by the Ministry for the Environment in their national state of the environment reporting, while other data will be used over time in evaluating the effectiveness of the implementation of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy, Whakaora Te Waihora and other management programmes.

THE SOUTHBRIDGE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY ANNUAL SHOW The Southbridge Horticultural Society is holding its annual show. This is one of the oldest surviving local shows in the district and the organisers hope that they will be able to back up the success of last year’s show, this year. Leah Keown, the show’s Secretary said “Our show is a fantastic local event and the number of entries is always large, and we hope this year will be even better. It is wonderful to see so many children’s entries in the Art and craft sections showing that we have many up and coming talents in the district”. Another popular section has been the photography section. This has increased significantly from previous years to the point where the section has now been extended to cover more categories. It has new boards for displaying entries and is sure to be a huge hit this year. The sections available to enter range from Cut Blooms to Junior Arts and
Crafts and many in between that are sure to interest all. There is also have a local garden competition with gardens in the district judged prior to the show. The show has a fruit and vegetable section with local produce grown by entrants which shows what is available to be grown at home in the country. Other secton include cookery and home produce, cut blooms, Dahlias as well as the floral art section which is always successful with many a talent shown here as well. The industrial section is always well attended and again, talents from the local area show through. The show covers interests from the younger preprimary sections to the more experienced at the other end of the scale. This year’s show is held on the Friday the 21st February 2014. Entries will be received at the Southbridge Town Hall on Thursday the 20th February between 7pm and 8.30pm as well as on
the day between 8.00am and 10.30am. Entries close at 10.30am sharp and no further entries will be accepted after this time. Judging starts at 10.30am with general admission from 2pm and the official closing is at 8.00pm with prizes including the local garden competition presented. Entry is Adults $5.00 – Members free. BE CONFIDENT ON THE ROAD Four free Confident Driving courses are being offered in Selwyn over the coming months to help older drivers drive safely and with confidence. The number of older drivers is increasingly nationally, and the number of older drivers on Selwyn roads is also rising. Crash statistics indicate that in the majority of crashes in the district involving people over 60, driver errors such as failing to stop or give way at intersections or poor observation of other drivers, have played a role. “As many residents live in rural areas or smaller townships it is important for older people to be able to drive safely to be able to access services and maintain their independence,” says Selwyn Road Safety Advisor Ngaire Tinning. Confident Driving courses are designed to assist older drivers to be confident in their driving and increase awareness of the traffic environment and other
road users. “It also aims to assist mature drivers to think about how, where and even when they travel in their car,” says Ngaire. “They can consider planning safer routes to drive and to avoid extremely busy times when driving to the supermarket or shops.” The courses are delivered by Age Concern on behalf of Selwyn District Council as part of the Council’s road safety programme. Upcoming free courses, which also include lunch and refreshments, are being offered at these locations: · Lincoln on 26 February · Darfield on 13 March · Rolleston on 25 March and · Leeston on 9 April To register for the course or find out more, contact Ngaire Tinning on 347 2901.

February before she heads back into study. It’s always a talking point when you have a beautiful piece of original art in your home, and even better if you are able to meet the artist so come down and have a look. The Leeston Market is a family affair, literally. Veenu, from Veenuz Indian D’zire will be at the market with her husband Gary, son Gursiman and friend Parkass (pictured) Yummy butter chicken for lunch as well as other delectable Indian cuisine, it’s a must have. It doesn’t last long either so don’t leave it too late to venture down. Along from Veenu and Gary, in the next gazebo you will find Alex and his family with Churro and the sausage sizzle so come on down if you are peckish, there is something
for everyone. The 17th March is St Patrick’s Day and a great day to go green. It’s a Monday so how about doing something at work, perhaps get some shortbread from Janice, wrap it in a green ribbon and shout your workmates morning tea. You could always get a nice piece of green bling from Margaret and surprise the special lady in your life with a “just because it’s St Patrick’s Day” gift. Rose will be alongside with her hand crafted toys and sewing, perhaps even a green ‘dammit doll’. The Leeston Market is on the first and third Saturday of every month. Saturday the 15th February is the third Saturday of the month therefore Siouxzart will be at the Leeston Market with ‘dolly-pots’, original crafts and things from the kitchen. It’s not
too late for planting either, so visit our green fingered ‘marketeers’ and keep the garden looking wonderful, perhaps start thinking about the ‘autumn’ crops next month. How are the ideas coming for the Easter Bonnet competition in April – it’s only five markets away so don’t leave it until the last minute. Put your thinking caps on and start creating the hat to beat them all. The bigger the better, and remember, I plan to be the one to beat! We welcome new stall holders at the Leeston Market and we offer a noncompetitive environment so if you would like to join us, please contact the
Leeston Market Committee Secretary – Shirley Fisher, on email – shirleydjfisher@msn.com for a stall application form and further information, or myself – 03 3242 595 – siouxzart@xtra.co.nz. Upcoming markets are this weekend, 15th February and then the 1st and 15th March. We look forward to seeing you there ~ whatever the weather Brenda Franz
ly with one of our student achievement targets for 2014, which is based on Science. To support the ‘Seeds of Learning’ programme and with the financial support of the Ellesmere Lions Club and our Home & School Committee, we have purchased a greenhouse for students to use to germinate the seeds that they plant. We are also in the process of securing a tunnel house to grow larger crops and we intend that our school gardens will be in full use throughout the year.
Fonterra has provided funding for us to purchase a garden shed and child sized gardening equipment and this equipment has already been in use as our students have identified and undertaken a number of tasks to keep our school environment more attractive. The big news for us this week is that we have been granted two new classrooms by the Ministry of Education to accommodate our growing roll. It is our hope that these rooms will be built as soon as possible to reduce the overcrowding that we have at present. Our swimming programme continues for the first five weeks of this term. We are fortunate to have received a
generous donation from Hamilton Seeds Ltd that has significantly reduced the swimming cost for our families, and also to have a number of parent helpers who get in to the pool (even on cool days) and assist our students to learn swimming skills. This month Financial Literacy lessons are being held throughout the school. The lessons are provided by ASB Bank and are a fabulous way to teach students the skills they require to manage their pocket money now and their
income later in life. We are also running a Wise Up programme via the Christchurch Methodist Mission. The Ellesmere Lions Club generously granted funding to allow our students to participate in this programme. All augurs well for a busy and productive year at Southbridge School.

ROCKWOOD BUSHWALK A NEW ATTRACTION FOR THE LAKE COLERIDGE AREA The Lake Coleridge/ Windwhistle area has a large array of walks open to the public and Rockwood Station, nestled in the Malvern Hills 15 minutes from the Rakaia gorge, is the newest addition. Owners Ben and Cheryl Richards are ce le bra ting the re establishment of the Rockwood Bushwalk with an Open Day on Sunday 23rd February. The celebrations will include a church service on the lawns of the 100 year old homestead on the property, arborist demonstrations and informative talks on native plants. There will also be a small number of stalls and available for purchase will be Devonshire tea and a BBQ on the lawns. All proceeds from the Open Day will benefit the Hororata Parish.
The tranquil bushwalk through the beautiful black beech forest has an abundance of native flora and fauna with an array of native birds creating a chorus in the canopy overhead. The track winds its way through the bush climbing gently to 400 metres above sea level and takes about 45 - 60 minutes. “Our family has been connected to Rockwood for over 100 years and as we have developed the bushwalk and garden we have discovered a few (many) historical treasures that allow us to see how the property was 100 years ago and how it has evolved,” explained owner Ben Richards. “With the help of the Hororata Parish we have restored the family graves which were hidden in a mess
of over grown bush. It is thought to have been one of the first public cemeteries in Canterbury dating back to the 1800’s.” Those who don't want to do the full walk can still enjoy the native bush on a five minute walk from the homestead to the graves or
simply wander the nearly 4 acres of woodland gardens which are under development. “The homestead gardens are a work in progress. We have a vision of restoring a lily pond, creating avenues through the trees and generally enhancing the natural

beauty surrounding us by nurturing the native plants, as a backdrop to new rhododendron plantings.’ “The open day is our way of sharing this beautiful area and we think people will enjoy the real sense of history on the bushwalk and in the gardens,” concluded Ben.
The Rockwood Bushwalk and Garden Open Day is on Sunday 23rd February from 10am – 4pm, 256 Darts Road Windwhistle. Entry is $10 per person, children free. More information at www.hororataparish. co.nz

ME KORERO MA TE HAUORA HINENGARO Let’s talk about mental health... Are you feeling stressed out? Are you feeling overwhelmed by the many things that you have to do now and this year? Well let’s talk about this and what you can do about it. There is good stress (eustress) such as planning a wedding, preparing for childbirth, planning a trip and bad stress, which is usually defined as the feeling of being overwhelmed by the demands being placed on you. Stress or feeling overly stressed can result from the impact of major life events (e.g, divorce, separation, ill family members etc) and trauma (e.g., the death of a loved one, physical illness or trauma) and it can result from a pile-up of daily life stressors (e.g., running late for work/school, fitting in appointments, children’s activities, school events, driving and weather conditions etc). Stress has two components: stress consists of stressors/triggers and appraisal of the stressors. In other words, stress involves not only things or conditions but also the way we think about those triggers. Therefore, when considering what we need to do to minimise our experience of stress, sometimes we need to look
at what is causing our stress and do some problemsolving about our stressors and/or sometimes we may need to reframe our thoughts about the stressors so that they are more helpful to us. The first step in managing stress is to make a list of the things that are causing us to feel stressed. Once that list is made, then we may be able to eliminate some of the stressors or ask for help to manage them. Often people wind up feeling overly stressed when they have trouble saying “no” to people and take on more than they can physically and mentally handle and when they have trouble recognising the need for help and asking for help. We will talk more about assertiveness in a later korero about mental health. Sometimes stressors cannot be eliminated or tasks delegated to others and in these cases, people may need to adjust their thinking in order to reduce their subjective experience of stress. Some questions that may help you to reframe your thoughts about your stressors are “What is the worst that could happen?” “Will this really matter so much in a week, a month, a year?”, “What would I tell a friend or my

child if they had these thoughts?”, “Am I thinking about the worst case scenario and if so what are some alternative more positive scenarios?”. The website www.getselfhelp.co.uk has lists of unhelpful thinking patterns which can help you to think differently about your stressors. Stress can also take a toll on you physically. When people are feeling overly stressed their fight or flight response systems are triggered. The fight or flight response system is a normal physiological response to threat but it can remain switched on and can make people feel agitated, anxious, and angry. We need to turn this switch off or down by either exercising to reduce the physiological arousal that is activated or engaging in some form of relaxation or diaphragmatic breathing. It is also important when experiencing stress to plan in time to take care of yourself and that means focusing on good nutrition, regular exercise, relaxation and taking time to engage in leisure and pleasure and in things that give us a sense of purpose. If you find that you have no time to do things, then you need to make time and this may require some management and problem-solving.
One of my own personal stress management strategies is to examine my core values. Values are different from goals and are essentially life directions (e.g., v career, family, health, citizenship etc). Using your values to guide decision making can help you manage your stress. If some of your day to day tasks are taking priority over your core values then you can use these values to help you make decisions about changing behaviour. You can access a values form from h t t p : / / media.psychologytools.org/ Worksheets/English/ Values.pdf Take care Selwyn people. Until next time… Dr Brigette Gorman

SAFE BURNING IN SELWYN Selwyn District Council is reminding residents of the importance of safe burning practices as weather conditions begin to dry out in the district. “We are currently in an open fire season and conditions are not yet dry enough to introduce fire restrictions. However conditions are worsening which does elevate the risk of fires spreading and potentially damaging property or endangering life if they are lit in unsuitable conditions,” says Selwyn Principal Rural Fire Officer Wilson Brown. “We have been very fortunate so far that most people have been careful to follow guidance on how to burn safely and it would be
great if people could continue to be cautious so that we are able to get through the summer in Selwyn without having any major fires to respond to.” Council staff are monitoring the fire risk on a daily basis and fire restrictions will be introduced if required. Mr Brown is also encouraging people to avoid lighting outdoor fires unless this is necessary. “Many properties will still have tree debris lying around following the wind event last spring. If possible, we are asking people to avoid burning this debris now in high summer and wait until there is more moisture in the soil, which

may happen in the autumn or winter.” In rural areas an open fire season exists, meaning that fires are permitted but anyone lighting a fire should follow safe burning guidelines. If you are planning to light a fire: • never do so in high winds or if high winds are forecast • always have a water source and fire fighting tools on hand to put out the fire • have an appropriate fire break in place for the type of fire, and • stay with the fire at all
times and dial 111 if it gets out of control There are a number of other conditions which must be met which are listed o n l i n e at www.selwyn.govt.nz/fire. Outdoor fires are not allowed in urban areas, other than gas barbeques, hangis and umus, and in high country and hill areas a permanent restricted fire season is in place. As the fire risk can change quickly with weather conditions people should always check whether fire restrictions are in place by
visiting www.selwyn.govt.nz/fire or phoning 03 347 2800 or 03 318 8338 before burning.

THE ELLESMERE ECHO
ELLESMERE CYCLING CLUB The threat of rain for racing on 23rd Jan meant a smaller field for the Leeston Cycling but it ended up very good conditions - the rain only started 5 mins after finishing! In the Development race the finishing order was the same as the starting order, no one managed to catch the earlier starters and Paris Dyer rode solo to a good win. In the senior race all but 5 of the field finished together in a big bunch finish, but it was a standout ride from Michael Vink from the back of the field that was a highlight. Michael was looking for a solid workout before the NZ Cycle Classic (NZ's highest ranked race) and he rode solo from the back of the field to just catch the bunch at the finish. That effort may well have helped him in the Classic as he won the first stage, a time trial, and went on to win the overall title. Results Race 14, 23rd Jan :-
Development race - 1st Paris Dyer (U17) 36:21, 2nd Will Gilbert (U17) 32:22, 3rd John Gilbert st, 4th & fastest time Nigel Thomas 31:40, 5th Sandy Harper st, 6th Jack Lowery st. Senior race (1st 10 of 29 starters) :- 1st Jeffery Tuck 21:52, 2nd Brent Marryatt 22:17, 3rd Brett Grieve 21:52, 4th Richard Adams 22:17, 5th Gareth Morgan 23:02, 6th Andy Broomhall 22:17, 7th Mark Sanders 23:02, 8th William Findlay 21:52, 9th Stewart Ford 23:02, 10th Steve Kendall 22:17, 15th= & fastest time Michael Vink 21:02. The Development race on the 30th Jan turned into a scratch race, with all riders starting (and staying) together throughout. In the Senior race the field finished in two main bunches, the front groups just holding off the closing faster riders. Results Race 15, 30th Jan :Development race - 1st & fastest time Geoff Allan (U17) 30:32, 2nd Jack Lowery 30:33, 3rd Tom
Harvey (U17) 30:38, 4th Mike Morley-Bunker 30:39, 5th Sandy Harper 30:39. Senior race (1st 10 of starters) :- 1st Gareth Morgan 23:13, 2nd Tony O'Connor 24:13, 3rd Gary Fulham 23:13, 4th Chris Nelson st, 5th Ray McKenzie st, 6th Christine Lambley (U17) 24:13, 7th Dan Batchelor st, 8th Mark Booth 26:13, 9th Matt Marshall 23:13, 10th Kevin Stephens 25:13, 20th & fastest time Greg Manson 21:44. The Club hosts the annual Leeston Classic race on Saturday the 15th Feb. It's a 50km handicap race over three laps of the Lakeside course and always attracts a large field including most of Canterbury's top cyclists. T h e Club thanks motorists for their patience if they are asked to give way or are slowed up by riders.
