Selwyn Kids Kindergarten, based in Rolleston, have been busy giving back to the community. After a great success raising funds for the Blind foundation last year through their puppy dog biscuit day, they have decided to do it

again this year. T he children from the Kindergarten, OSCAR and home base services have been busy collecting orders from the community, before spending a whole week baking over 400 biscuits to fill their orders,

finishing with a visit from a guide dog to help the children to understand what all their hard work was for. The proceeds from this will go towards the Blind Foundation puppy training school. The children really enjoyed

‘A Barrel of Laughs’ with

Gary McCormick June 18th - 24th was National Volunteer Week, an opportunity to reward and recognise those in the community who go above and beyond. Ninety percent of non-for-profit organisations are run by volunteers, without any paid staff. Consider the area without volunteer fire fighters, or St John ambulance officers doesn’t bear thinking about. Then there are sports coaches, committees and support groups - all rely on volunteer involvement to survive. There are numerous local volunteers in this area and many will have been recognised by the organisations they are so crucial to. A prestigious award was presented to Libby PilcherPilcher-Twiss at the Lincoln Rotary meeting on June 6th. The Young Totara Award aims to ‘recognise significant contribution by youth to the life and well being of their community’. Libby, a second year student at Lincoln University has given up many hours of her free time to serve as a volunteer at the Lincoln and District Community Care Association during 2016-17. The Community Care Association plays an important role in the

well being of people in need and relies on support from residents and organisations in the community. Libby, a bright and hard working student who lives with family in Prebbleton, put up her hand to serve Community Care and made a great contribution in developing their website and fund raising efforts. Libby is also a Future Leader Scholar at Lincoln and demonstrated qualities of discipline and planning abilities

through balancing voluntary work with studies and other activities and achieved A grade average last year. Rotary Club of Lincoln will plant a Totara tree in a specially designated site later this year in recognition of this award. The Club aims to make this an annual event so there will be a Totara grove in the area in a few years time. Rotary Club of Lincoln meet every Tuesday evening at the University and welcome visitors.

THE EYES HAVE IT We’ve never been more brow obsessed than we are right now. Shaping, grooming, and constantly maintaining eyebrows has become a necessary beauty practice. After all, girls, actors and models alike have been defined by their brows, for better or worse, for the past century. It is my humble opinion that all good brow shapes should start with a tint/colour. Don't be afraid of an eyebrow tint - a good therapist will be able to determine the correct colour for you. Big black eyebrows need not be your end result, but a tint does make a difference to the fullness of the brows and a better defined shape. Unfortunately not all the of us are blessed with thick natural brows and some product is required to get your perfect brow. Products on the market can be broken down into categories and each has its own merits and brows that they suit. • Gels, waxes, pomades, cake: These are generally in a pot and are a wax like consistency. These are fantastic for people with fine sparse eyebrows that want a softer, natural look to the shape. They last well, they fill in the back of the brow or add the illusion of length and fullness and are a much better alternative, I think, to pencils that can give a harsh line. • Mousse: Normally in a mascara type packaging they are a must try for an unruly brow with longer hairs. They colour while setting the brows into place. • Powders: Always a winner! this is a very versatile, and probably one of the most popular, aids to help add shape and colour, but with a soft natural look. They are super easy to use and you can correct any errors without too much bother, They can be used dry, or wet for a bolder look, and they are overall one of our most popular brow products. • Pens and pencils: These are a bit harder to get looking really nice, but there are a lot on the market. A very soft pencil with a brush on the other end can be helpful for defining shape and some of the new gel like pens are amazing for defining and creating the illusion of new hairs. At Affinity we stock Curtis collection cosmetics from Australia. Curtis have a huge range of gels, pencils, powders etc and one of our eye brow experts can re-shape your brows and help you with products to perfect those beautiful brows to frame those eyes. Pop in and see, Sarah, Jayne and Lauren at Affinity Beauty, West Melton - we would love to help.

Construction of an off road link to connect Lincoln to the Little River Rail Trail is now under way. The 45km Rail Trail runs from Shands Road in Hornby, via Prebbleton, Lincoln, Greenpark, Motukarara, Kaituna, Birdlings Flat and Catons Bay to Little River. The new shared cycleway/ pathway will link Lincoln to the existing Rail Trail at Ellesmere Road where it crosses to River Road near Moirs Lane. The link will be developed in two stages with the first stage running from Liffey Springs Park to the Lincoln Stormwater Wetland. This stage is now under construction by Selwyn District Council with a new pedestrian/cyclist bridge over the L2 River at Liffey Springs Park recently developed to link to existing pathways around the wetlands. A new water crossing point will also be added at the wetlands. The second stage of construction is being financed

by the Little River Rail Trail Trust, with a construction start date for this work yet to be confirmed. This stage will see a new section of pathway added from south of the wetlands along the L2 River where it will connect to Moirs Lane and the start of the existing pathway at Ellesmere Road. From here the T rail follows the river downstream to the Ahuriri Reserve and the pathways through to Motukarara. “The new bridge and pathways will provide a mainly off-road route which allows cyclists to avoid having to use a busy section of road along Edward Street and Ellesmere Road south and will provide a safer and more enjoyable cycling experience,” said Selwyn District C o u nc i l A s s e t M a n a g e r Transportation Andrew Mazey. Mazey “It also provides access across the river for residents in the neighbouring subdivisions to the wetl ands are a for recreation.”

The Smolenski family live locally at Weedons and this is about their son Jonty. Jonty Dad and Mum, Sam and Maree Smolenski (and many will know Maree’s mother and father Julia and Lee Golding from their time in the district), older brother Lachlan and younger sister Ruby have all been involved in Jonty’s journey and they are now calling for support to enable them to give to those who have been there for them on this journey. Jonty, who has just started as a new entrant at Weedons School is the reason for the forthcoming ‘Jonty’s Journey Appreciation Race-night’ to be held at Addington Raceway on July 21st. Full details of this event are on the Jonty’s Journey Facebook page and the family would be very appreciative of any support. “T h e r ac e -n i gh t i s an opportunity to raise funds for, and publicly thank, a number of charities that have been instrumental in supporting Jonty and our family over the past five years,” Maree explained. “The following is a short summary of Jonty’s life so far: “Jonty is our second son, born seven weeks early, in May 2012. At the time of his birth, we began the biggest journey of our lives. Initially it was thought that he just needed time to catch up from his low birthweight, but when he began severely refluxing and refusing to feed we faced our first surgery to tighten the top of his stomach. We eventually left the neonatal unit in Christchurch after a long 96 days. When home, Jonty’s feeding deteriorated again and three weeks later we were back to the children’s ward, having the surgery repeated and a feeding tube placed, so we could feed him directly to his stomach. At the same time, Jonty’s vision and hearing was being tested as he appeared to present with deficiencies in these areas too. Since then, he has had numerous general anaesthetics and admissions to hospital. These include having the lenses removed from both his eyes, laser surgery, and synthetic lenses put in; grommets for his ears; colonoscopies and laparoscopies to review his gut issues; and a few viral illnesses which he takes longer to recover from, and with more interventions, than most other

children. At the beginning of 2015 we approached our genetics team again and instigated a review of Jonty, as we felt that, even despite his many setbacks, he wasn’t progressing as well as we had expected. Jonty’s paediatric team echoed our concerns and further testing was undertaken. After many months (including a five week admission with winter illness) we were delivered the news that Jonty suffers from a very rare genetic condition called Trichothiodystrophy (TTD). We believe that Jonty is currently the only one with this condition, in New Zealand. Following this diagnosis we joined a Facebook support group which led to us being invited to attend the 2016 conference in Washington DC. We held a very successful fundraising dinner in April 2016 that allowed us to travel to the conference and currently have enough funds left in Jonty’s trust

account for us to return again for the 2017 conference, next month. Over Jonty’s five years of life we have met people and been involved in many organisations that have supported us. We wish to pay public thanks to a number of these and were presented with the possibility from Addington Raceway of holding an appreciation racenight to do so. One hundred percent of the funds raised will be shared between The Maia foundation, CCS Christchurch, Riding for the disabled Christchurch, Smiledial, Van Asch Deaf education centre and BLENNZ (Blind and Low Vision Education Network). We are currently seeking assistance from businesses who could offer gratefully received goods or services, as either spot prizes or silent auctions on the night.”

Recent commentary has suggested that it can be cheaper to build, rather than buy an exis ng home. There are certainly pluses for a brand new home of your choosing, including poten ally less deposit and a bigger Home Start Grant, but you have to play to your own strengths and weaknesses. Are you someone who loves the planning process and can put a vision into reality? Do you like planning and interior design? Do you and your partner see eye to eye on most things when it comes to design? Building can be very stressful, and if you have said no to any of the above then it will be even more so. Finding the right builder/sec on/plans can be a mission and unless you are that way inclined, there is a lot to be said for walking into a readymade home! Landscaping established, neighbourhood established, knowing the neighbourhood layout and whether you are likely to be built out. These things are part of the unknown in a new subdivision, and so it is a bit of a gamble where everything is s ll growing. So buy or build? Think it through carefully and weigh up poten al cost savings and other posi ves against the risks and other nega ves before you decide.

On June 9th, Bellyful Selwyn celebrated their second birthday and reported that it had been a busy, whirlwind of a year, and in the ever-growing community of Selwyn their volunteers were kept busy cooking, delivering meals and fundraising. To date the group has 27 active volunteers, has had ten cookathons and delivered 1,058 meals to 194 families in the Selwyn region. They have cooked 272 lasagnes, 361 mac and cheese, 387 spaghetti bolognaise and 49 soups, giving them a grand total of 1069 meals cooked! Bellyful Selwyn are also very proud to say they cooked their one thousandth meal at the last cookathon on May 22nd. Bellyful helps families around New Zealand when they need it most; at dinner-time! They are a national not-for-profit organisation providing meals for families with newborn babies, and families with young children who are struggling with illness particularly those lacking a good support network. Their volunteers deliver free cooked meals to these families, and there’s no catch or payment involved. Bellyful members just understand that these periods in life are hard enough as it is, without having to try and worry about getting dinner to the table and having a few meals

delivered by a friendly face can be a real sanity-saver. They are not a food-bank and their service is appreciated by working parents, as much as those at home. Bellyful’s first criteria is that the families they support don’t have others available to do what they do ie. cook and deliver free meals. The second criteria is that the family must fall into one of these categories: 1) Have a new baby (generally under three months old - but that’s not set in stone). 2) Have a young family and someone in that family unit has a serious or terminal illness. There is no financial assessment involved. It is important to note that Bellyful isn’t a service that provides meals based on financial need, their service is based on more of an emotional need for support Bellyful Selwyn not only services Selwyn but also parts of Christchurch including Hornby, Hei Hei, Wigram, Halswell and Tai Tapu. This is to be held in the Lincoln Event Centre on July 28th with guest speaker Lesley Elliot, Elliot and promises to be a memorable evening. CARPET 1. Draw curtains back in the morning to let in the (free!) warmth of the sun and close them late aTernoon (just before dark) to trap the heat inside. 2. Wipe condensa on off windows in the morning, or the moisture will evaporate into the air, making it damper and harder to heat. Use a ‘Scoopy’, available from Community Energy Ac on. 3. Ven late daily by opening windows on opposite sides for ten minutes, even in winter.

Top Tip….. In a very draughty house, radiant heat (bar heaters, log burners) will keep you warmer than convec on heat (fan heater, oil column heater).
