On Saturday, July 8th, Scott (Scones) McIlroy achieved something to be celebrated when he played his 200th Division 1 game for the Darfield Rugby Club. Up against Southbridge, and playing for the annual “McIlroy and Sheat Brothers’ Cup”, it was a fitting way for Scott to reach his milestone 200th game even though they didn’t come away with the win. This cup is in recognition of the brothers, Scott and Blair McIlroy from Darfield and Michael, Jarrod and Cameron Sheat from the Southbridge Club, who have all played 100 plus, Division 1 games for their respective Clubs.

ISSUE 800 Friday 14th July 2017

The Malvern News put a few questions to Scott about his rugby career: What does playing 200 games for Darfield mean to you? I feel very proud to have done this for Darfield. I have met lots of great folk and made great friends over this time, with people all over Ellesmere. And the nickname ‘Scones’? After six years working at the Darfield Bakery, John (Bully) Sheehan called me ‘Scones’ and it stuck! Will you keep playing? No more, that's me done. My body is slowing, falling to bits and I have a knee that needs a good fix up!

The Sir Peter Blake Trust is a reminder that Sir Peter believed in the incredible potential of young kiwis to achieve great things. He knew that inspiring leaders, of any age, could be found in every corner of New Zealand. He recognised that leaders make things happen, and that dreamers have a vision. In that spirit, and in partnership with Westpac, the Sir Peter Blake Trust Young Leader Awards celebrate young people whose outstanding leadership uplifts their school community. Alastair McLauchlan, McLauchlan a Year 6 student at Glentunnel School, received his Sir Peter Blake Young Leader Award during leadership week (Friday, June 30th). The award was presented by Nick Stanbury, Stanbury Manager of the Westpac Bank, Lincoln. Alastair was nominated for the award by school staff and students in recognition of his leadership qualities. The Windwhistle School board can now tick the box for the much awaited Solar Panels for their school. With the help of Fiona Davidson, Davidson the school received a grant from the Rata Foundation and also from the local community to help towards their Solar Panels. With funds from lamb sales, hot lunches and other fundraising initiatives, Windwhistle School were able to cover the installation of the panels, with the knowledge that the benefits will pay off in the future. The panels have been installed by Stuart MacWilliam from

Renewable Solutions Ltd and the school is just now waiting for the final usage details to be established by power provider Meridian. “Although the initial outlay is costly, the future benefits with the solar option will more than pay off,” commented a School spokesperson. “Having the community heated pool is a big outlay for a small school, so any costs that can be saved, help.”

The Waiau-toa Odyssey movie has recently been awarded the Hiddleston/MacQueen Award for the ‘Best New Zealand Made Film’ at the 2017 New Zealand Mountain Film Festival and Darfield has been chosen for the Canterbury premiere screening. Featuring three adventurers (Damian Damian Stones, Stones Sam Jones (Muel, and Hororata local Deane Parker), Parker a film-maker (Simon Simon Waterhouse) Waterhouse and a photographer, (Grant Grant Stirling) Stirling the group of mates set off on a six day, 300 kilometre unsupported journey. By combining the new bike-packing and pack-rafting technology (inflatable, white-water capable, one person rafts which can be packed down and carried), they travel from St Arnaud in the Nelson Lakes, through to Kekerengu on the East Coast, connecting backcountry tracks and white water rivers through remote parts of the Marlborough wilderness. To add to their drama, a massive earthquake (Kaikoura) changes their plans and reveals opportunities to explore new landscapes. The original trip plans were literally turned upside down when the earthquake hit in November last year, meaning the planned route was destroyed and the Clarence River was permanently altered by landslides. Screenings of the award winning film are scheduled/or have taken place in Queenstown, Alexandra, The Mancos Valley River Film Festival in the US, Hamilton, Wanaka, Wellington and now Darfield. Most of the trip went according to plan, except for one incident, during which three of the five expedition members flipped their boats on the same rapid. “We managed to have more carnage on one rapid than the whole trip," Deane recalled. “We let our guard down; you've got to keep your game face on at all times.” Minimising weight was critical, as the loaded bikes already weighed thirty kilograms. Carrying only the most minimal camera kit and a tiny drone, Simon still managed to capture the whole journey. In the intro Deane is listed as ’packrafting logistics, raft guide

Page 3

and mountain biker’. Deane has spent his whole life adventuring in the New Zealand outdoors and has been a passionate mountain biker since a teenager. He now uses the bike to reach the furthest corners of

remote backcountry. Deane is also an experienced white water raft guide and kayaker, having spent more than a decade exploring and developing rafting operations on previously unrafted rivers on the West Coast.

After their previous, and very successful, Winter Wonderland Ball, the Sheffield Primary School PTA are now raising the standard once again by holding a Red Carpet Ball (July 22nd Springfield Hall). Organisers commented that this type of event is one of their favourites because it brings not only their community together, but also people from surrounding areas and all for the cause of fundraising for their local school. “This year we are hoping the weather behaves,” said a member of the organising committee, “so we don't have to re book our dates like last time when we were snowed out,” they laughed. Tickets have been selling like hot cakes and speed is now of the essence to get any of the few that are left. The Sheffield School PTA is a friendly, community focussed bunch of parents who are responsible for fundraising activities at community and private events. “We have a healthy team at the moment who are all fantastic at rolling up their sleeves and getting things done. It’s all for the benefit of the school and we are always open to more members.

“Do get your best red carpet outfits on and be ready for the paparazzi because the glamour will be on full show at our Red Carpet Ball.” Sheffield School PTA are always looking for more fundraising

opportunities and are already proactive in some unique events - all of which benefit their School community.

See the advertisement in this issue for their forthcoming Red Carpet Ball.

Are you one of the thousands of Kiwis who hit the ski fields hard at the start of the season, only to end up hobbling around the next day? The skiing/ snowboarding season is upon us, and as exciting as it is to get out on the slopes, it is important to make sure that your body is ready. Injuries are common on the slopes because skiing and snowboarding require strength and flexibility in different muscles to conventional exercise. Doing these three exercises twice a day, and once before you strap on your skis or snowboard, can improve your performance and help prevent strains and aching muscles and joints, giving you a longer, healthier winter sports season. Selwyn District Council Rural Fire Authority held its final awards ceremony on Thursday, June 29th, recognising the service of volunteer rural fire fighters from throughout the district. Twelve firefighters from West Melton, Darfield, Lake Coleridge, HEB Construction and Selwyn District Council received service awards. Selwyn Mayor, Sam Broughton, Broughton thanked the firefighters for their

com m it m e nt t o S e l wyn communities and also thanked families and partners for their support. The awards’ ceremony was one of the final acts for Selwyn District Council as a rural fire authority. From July 1st, fire organisations from throughout the country have merged with the fire service to form Fire and

Over the next three years Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), established on July 1st 2017, will work towards full integration. FENZ is the amalgamation of the New Zealand Fire Service, the National Rural Fire Authority, twelve enlarged rural fire districts and twenty six territorial

authority rural fire authorities. The Strategic priorities for Fire and Emergency New Zealand are: • Fire reduction and prevention • Stronger engagement with communities • Coordinated services (this will help ensure improved readiness for, and response to, incidents). Darfield Fire Chief and President of the United Fire Brigade Association, Alan Kittelty stressed that nothing has changed for the public in the case of an emergency. “Please see below,” Alan commented, “nothing has altered in the way firefighters will respond: “What you need to tell Fire and Emergency New Zealand: • When you call 111, an operator will ask whether you need Fire, Ambulance or Police.

Emergency New Zealand. The new organisation is responsible for all responses to fire throughout the country, in both rural and urban areas. This also means that the Council is no longer involved in issuing fire permits. Anyone wanting a fire permit should now contact Fire and Emergency NZ and in an emergency call 111.

Left to Right: Tom McElrea, John Morten, Henry Studholme and John Ballagh enjoying the Scottish supper. Nearly one hundred people gathered at the Hororata Hall for a very special Ceilidh on July 7th. From the minute guests arrived they felt they had been transported to Scotland with every sense immersed in the Scottish culture. Their ears were greeted by pipers and drummers, their eyes were lit up at the fully themed Hall with tartan, the Saltire and thistles, and their taste buds were teased with haggis balls and Prime Smoke Salmon nibbles. Internationally renowned Ceilidh Caller Colin Forsyth, Forsyth once a local in Hororata, had returned from Scotland to lead the dancing for the night. Right from the Incredible Ceilidh Band’s first note, everyone was on their feet joining in. The evening included entertainment from dancers from the Julie Hawk School of Dance and pipers and drummers from the St Andrews College Pipe Band. Guests were enthralled with the Haggis Ceremony, including Colin’s rendition of Robert Burns ‘Ode to the Haggis’. A traditional Scottish supper filled bellies with haggis, neeps and tatties, oatcakes, oatie biscuits, salmon and so much more. “Our aim for this Ceilidh was to c r e at e a v ery s p ec i a l atmosphere where young, old, neighbour, stranger and everyone in between, could join together for some good old fashioned fun. agricultural tyre manufacturers in the world. So it was fitting that with the agricultural connection the balls went to rural schools. Not just delivered, deflated, in a box, but personally presented, blown up and ready to go! Personnel from Darfield Tyre Centre (Manager, Ross Marsh and Administration Assistant, Katie Smith) Smith were grateful for the assistance of Selwyn Sports Trust’s Jayde Mayberry who arranged for the pair to attend each school and distribute the gratefully received sports balls. Almost the whole total of three hundred rugby and soccer balls have so far been distributed to ten Malvern rural schools. As an add-on to receiving the balls, pupils were presented with a BKT banner to use creatively in a photo shoot. The picture can then be uploaded to the web and the School with the best offering wins a further $500 worth of sports’ equipment.

There was a papa mole, a momma mole, and a baby mole. They lived in a hole out in the country near a farmhouse. Papa mole poked his head out of the hole and said, "Mmmm, I smell sausage!" Momma mole poked her head outside the hole and said, "Mmmm, I smell pancakes!" Baby mole tried to s+ck his head outside but couldn't because of the two bigger moles. Baby mole said, "The only thing I smell is molasses."
