Unfortunately for Scott, who earned his nickname Scones while working at the Darfield Bakery, the Ellesmere division one match didn’t go Darfield’s way being beaten by close rivals Southbridge, although the team has secured a place in the competition’s semifinals with one round to go. About his 200th match Scott said he felt a mixture of excitement and relief. “It was relief in the sense I have had a few injury worries with my knee and whatnot this season and excited to do it at home, especially against Southbridge which is a team that I have a few good mates in.” Scott began his career with

Darfield rugby when the family including his twin brother Blair, who played his 197th match for the club against Southbridge, moved to Darfield from Dunedin when he was five. “I started playing rugby for Darfield in the midget grade and played up through all the grades and it’s been pretty cool playing all my rugby with Blair as well.” Scott claims older brother status to his twin after being born two minutes ahead of Blair which he said also helps to explain his slightly more impressive physique. University moves up tertiary rankings Selwyn’s Lincoln University continues to move up the rankings when compared to other tertiary institutions both in New Zealand and overseas. Lincoln has recently been placed 71st in the new Times Higher Education (THE) Asia-Pacific University Rankings, amongst the 243 universities in the region. The ranking puts it fifth of New Zealand’s eight universities for the first time. This follows a recent rise to 319 in QS World University rankings, a jump of 24 places from last year, and placing it in the top 1.2% of the world’s universities. Vice-Chancellor Professor Robin Pollard said the Times Higher Education’s assessments take into account teaching, research, international outlook, and knowledge transfer. Weightings were applied to each category to reflect AsiaPacific priorities. “Lincoln University has continued to improve its scores in the major rankings assessments,” Professor Pollard said. “We are happy that ranking assessments of Lincoln continue to improve. There are arguments for and against different ranking methods, but ultimately what is most important is that the university adds value to students, industry, and society at large.

p Lincoln University Vice-Chancellor Professor Robin Pollard

“Lincoln University will continue to make organisational change to improve its performance further, as befits a 21st century world class university.” Professor Pollard said their next step is to reshape the university to deliver benefits enabled by the Joint Facility with AgResearch. “That involves new ways of working with Crown Research Institutes and industry partners,” he said. ¢

 by Kent Caddick

The working party behind the building of Dunsandel’s new $3.8 million dollar community centre is praising the community for their part in making it happen.

p Rolleston College will hold its first ever school fete in August

The Rolleston College fete will be held on the school grounds on Sunday, August 6, from 11am to 4pm with entry by way of school donation. The fete is being organised by the students themselves under the guidance of mentor Rachel Skelton. Mrs Skelton said the students leading the fete, Katey Knight, Siena Jenkins and Jaran Parker, have been working on the fete as a part of their Quest or Passion project. “They have over 48 stalls plus student ones organised, and we have reached our capacity for stalls,” she said. “There has been a huge amount of learning in this for all three of them in terms of event management, health and safety, and communication.

“They have had to weigh up alternatives and make some difficult decisions such as deciding not to have the large rides they initially considered due to Health and Safety, favouring instead some more low key options such as pony rides. “They have done an amazing job as 12 and 13 year olds to take on such a mammoth task.” Mrs Skelton said Jaran has led the car component of the fete and they are currently expecting over 25 classic cars and some new Harley Davidson Motorbikes at the event. Anyone wanting to show their cars or motorcycles can contact Jaran at j.parker@rollestoncollege or through the Rolleston College Fete Facebook page. ¢

The finishing touches are being put on the new 700m2 building ahead of it’s official opening on Friday, August 4. Chair of the Dunsandel Community Centre Working Party Russell Dalzell said the community had begun to look at what it was going to do with the old hall prior to the September 2010 earthquake. “So we held a public meeting and from that, and a survey we did, there was overwhelming support for moving the hall to the domain.” A working party was formed which included Mr Dalzell, district councillor Nigel Barnett, Ray Seebeck, Karen Stone and Leo Donkers. Plans were drawn up, costs were calculated and the working party got to work. “We always had a fairly lofty goal in terms of what we could raise and I think in the end we did better than many would have imagined.” The working party itself raised over $350,000 in cash donations as well as obtaining grants of $500,000 from the lotteries commission, $150,000

from the RATA foundation and $75,000 from the Ellesmere Reserves Board. “There was such a good community spirit here and a strong desire to see something new and modern built because in a small community like ours you’re stuffed without a town hall.” Mr Dalzell said their focus now is turning to managing the building and to ensure as much as possible it pays for itself in terms of the running costs. ¢

Cost of blaze calculated Selwyn’s share of the rural firefighting costs for February’s Port Hills fires has been estimated at $7.9 million, most of which will be covered by insurance.

THE RECORD  July 12 - 2017

Celebrating ethnic diversity

5

Selwyn’s second district-wide CultureFest will be held in Lincoln this year.

p Insurance will cover most of the rural firefighting costs incurred by the Selwyn District Council during February’s Port Hills’ blaze

The Selwyn District council said the figure includes all rural firefighting costs incurred by the council and the Department of Conservation as rural fire authorities. It does not include costs incurred by the New Zealand Fire Service (now Fire Emergency NZ) as these costs sit with the Fire Service and do not form part of the council’s insurance claim. It also does not include civil defence costs incurred by the council. The majority of the costs ($7.4 million) will be covered through insurance with the Rural Fire Fighting Fund. Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said council costs not covered by insurance will be funded from the council’s 201617 operating expenditure. He said the costs reflect the significant scale of the firefighting operation. “The council also acknowledges that during this extended firefighting operation a substantial number of

council staff were diverted from their normal duties to work on this huge fire fighting operation. “We’re now back to business as usual but I would like to thank our Selwyn residents for their understanding, and for the support they showed to those involved in the firefighting efforts.” Council and DoC will each meet their own insurance excess of $195,000 along with other non-claimable costs totalling approximately $175,000, including the cost of preparing the claim. A breakdown of the rural firefighting costs showed significant areas of expenditure included approximately $2.1 million for aircraft, $1.8 million for rural fire personnel, $900,000 for fire retardant, $800,000 for rural fire equipment and vehicles, and $600,000 for heavy machinery. February’s firestorm on the Port Hills covered over 2000 hectares and destroyed 11 homes. ¢

The 2017 event, which is organised by Selwyn District Council in partnership with Rotary Club of Lincoln, Christchurch Multicultural Council, and the Canterbury Migrant Centre, will be held at Lincoln Event Centre and Domain on Sunday, October 1, from 11am to 4pm. Council is now inviting cultural and ethnic community groups in the district to take part in the second annual celebration of diversity in Selwyn.

Council’s events and recreation advisor Dave Tippett said CultureFest will be a great way to celebrate the contribution that so many groups make to Selwyn. “With a growing population comes increasing diversity and this event is all about welcoming people of different cultures and building a community that’s more connected with the world and with global opportunities.” Any groups or individuals interested in participating in CultureFest can contact Dave Tippett by email or phone on 03 347 2719. In the final match of round two of the premier competition Broadfield accounted for Halswell 68-45 at the Lincoln Events Centre. The win puts them into second place on the points table, three behind Lincoln and five clear of third placed Greenpark. In Premier 2 grade action, Lincoln B beat West Melton B 47-36, Dunsandel overcame Halswell B 55-44 and West Melton A recorded a 57-43 win over Burnham. Darfield lost its unbeaten record in this year’s Ellesmere division one rugby competition on Saturday but has secured a spot in the semifinals with one round to go.

p Darfield’s Harry Pankhurst breaks through the Southbridge defence to score his side’s second try

p Ratu Luvenitoga, who was playing his 150th match for Southbridge, charges at the Darfield defence

Darfield went down to current Ellesmere champions Southbridge at Darfield Domain on Saturday afternoon but the two sides, along with competition leaders Waihora, which had to come from behind to beat Lincoln 18-16, have all secured a place in the semis. Whether Darfield will be hosting a semifinal match will be determined when the final round of the Ellesmere competition is played, following this weekend’s Southbridge Shield clash between Ellesmere and North Canterbury in Kaiapoi. Darfield started well in its clash with Southbridge for the McIlroy Sheat Brothers Cup, with centre Richard Catherwood crossing the tryline after just five minutes of the match. Southbridge fullback Jarrod Sheat cut through for his side’s first try after 12 minutes and added a second 15 minutes later with Southbridge going to the halftime break with a 14-5 lead. It extended that lead when flanker Jale Masi went over for a converted try 15

minutes into the second spell. Darfield struck back less than five minutes later when halfback Harry Pankhurst burst through the Southbridge defence. However, Darfield couldn’t score again and Southbridge moved one point above Darfield into second spot on the points table with the 21-10 victory. Both sides could leapfrog top placed Waihora in the final round of the competition as Waihora will be sitting the round out with the bye. Prebbleton, which had a bye on Saturday, look to have done enough to secure the fourth semifinal berth but Lincoln is still in with a chance. Lincoln will need a bonus point win over Hornby, which lost to West Melton 5-29 on Saturday, in the final round and hope Southbridge beat Prebbleton. Darfield face Rolleston in the final round and Rolleston will be looking to end their season on a high note after going down to the combined Burnham Dunsandel Irwell side 24-43 on the weekend. ¢

Growing up in the country and in a family of 8 kids meant that most of the time if you wanted something you had to do it yourself. Jayne Redmond started her first after school job sweeping the next door joiner shop floors at 13 and from then on she always had an after school job. “it was just what you did if you wanted some extra pocket money” Coming from a family where your parents both work hard rubbed off on all of us says Jayne with Dad owning his own business almost all of us followed suit with 6 of the 8 of us being business owners now. After doing office work straight from school Jayne had a hankering for a job with a bit of diversity so in 2003 she quit her job and started studying Beauty in Christchurch. After completing her training she landed her first job at one of Christchurchs top Day Spas. It was there she learnt very fast, literally dropped in the deep end with a full client base because someone had quit the day before. Luckily she managed to swim instead of sink and learnt a great deal in 18 months of working flat out. The big OE called so off she went to UK where Jayne worked in the beauty industry while traveling. In 2007 Jayne started her first salon just out of Darfield attached to a friend’s Hair studio. It was this year that she convinced her twin sister Sarah to go and complete her beauty training. “I had a dream that one day we might own a salon together”. In 2010 the opportunity came for Jayne to purchase an existing salon in Darfield and that is where things really took off. Sarah began to work with Jayne as one of her staff members and within 1 year Jayne had 3 staff members. Fast forward 5

to the shores of Akaroa Harbour and much in between. My very first bride whom I had known for half of her life, is now a well-known singer. You may have seen her as a soloist with the NZ Navy Band and she has sung a few National Anthems for the All Blacks and visiting rugby teams. You will find my advertisement, the third Thursday of each month in The Record.

2009 was a year to remember. Our twins, Jamie and Lachlan had just had their first birthday, we had an earthquake, oh and we bought a business. Not the ideal start to our first year in business. Deciding the commute to Christchurch 5 days a week was a big amount of time away from the family, it wasn’t long before Joanna was able to take over running the office, working from home which makes family life much easier with the kids at school and starting after school activities. Looking to expand the business, we could see a need for a skip hire service and we set about making it happen, found a truck and bought some skips and off we went, slowly at first and then as we forged relationships with local builders and business it increased from our first 2 skips to the 17 we have today with plans to continue to expand the service. Having both 3 cubic metre skips and 7.5 cubic metre skips provides options for waste removal. Always looking to expand and diversify we started looking at cardboard recycling and we took over an existing service which included collections as far east as Leeston. This led to employing another driver to work part time to cope with the extra workload. Our service area now covers almost all of the Selwyn District, Rakaia Gorge to West Melton, Castle Hill to Leeston. Serving farms, homes and businesses, if you have any waste needs we would be happy to talk through our service options.

Farming ADVERTORIAL

New benchmark for recreational jetboating Hamilton Jet New Zealand has taken a step away from the conventional with the design of its newest jet boat model, the 470 Sportsman Range. Launched at the 2017 Christchurch Boat, Motorhome & Caravan Show, the 470 takes a fresh look at every aspect of comfort, safety and practicality for the jet boater and passengers, with the boat’s whole design, from bow to stern and keel to windscreen, a reflection of this focus. The 470 offers a different profile from anything else seen on local rivers and lakes, thanks largely to its distinctive curved sheer line and sleek windscreen. Hamilton Jet NZ Manager John Connelly says these obvious differences are just a small part of the whole design philosophy behind the Sportsman Range, which has come about after listening closely to jet boater feedback for many years. “We’ve taken into consideration all those things jet boaters have told us they like and dislike, and what they want from a boat to give them the best jet boating experience,” says Connelly. “Then we looked at every part of our current hull and deck designs to see how they match to those ideals.” Hamilton Jet’s various recreational boat models have proven popular for many years, and it was important the new 470 didn’t lose any of the great qualities of these previous designs. “We’ve taken all the good things about our jet boats and enhanced them further, while at

the same time taking a clean sheet redesign approach to those aspects of our current designs which didn’t fit this new philosophy.” The Hamilton Jet 470 is an evolution of the Hamilton Jet 151, taking the base 151 aluminium hull and increasing the strength of the delta keel and hull bottom, plus reconfigured the hull strakes to improve lift and cornering performance. Welding of the hull is completed by ABS certified welders using a jig for consistency of hull shape and integrity of weld-line. The result is a stronger boat that tracks smoothly and turns tightly and consistently in all conditions. The 470’s wider cockpit and curved sheer line provides increased height in the cockpit, dash and windscreen, offering more space for all passengers as well as better protection from the elements behind the raked screen. The windscreen has a hinged central section, behind which is a solid step moulded into the dash, providing easy and safe foredeck access. A handrail is positioned behind the top edge of the windscreen so hands are better protected from wind and weather. The moulded fibreglass deck allows for the 470’s fluid curves and the seamless integration of hatches and insets from bow, through the dash and cockpit to the transom. Along with large fore and aft deck hatches, the 470 incorporates a dashboard

glovebox on the passenger side, as well as a carbon-fibre insert for the engine gauges, allowing customised gauge layout and easier access for maintenance. The 470 is available with three standard

engine configurations, each ideally suited to the HJ212 waterjet with turbo impeller. Also an additional option of Customer supplied engine package. Hull, deck and seat upholstery are available in a range of colours.

For the first time in its 49-year history, an Otago farmer is the FMG Young Farmer of the Year with Milton sheep and beef farmer, Nigel Woodhead, convincingly winning the prestigious title after three days of gruelling competition. Handing over the title to Mr Woodhead was the 2016 Young Farmer winner Athol New, who is also a Lincoln University graduate, having achieved his Bachelor of Agricultural Commerce degree in 2009 and now manages several dairy farms at Dunsandel. Mr Woodhead, who represented Otago Southland in the competition, studied Agricultural Science at Lincoln University. The 28-year-old was overwhelmed and emotional after 3 days of intense competition. “I watched FMG Young Farmer of the Year when I was a child, so to win it is a childhood dream that I think will take a long time to sink in,” Mr Woodhead said. A popular winner, Nigel graduated from Lincoln University with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science before working at Midlands Seed in Ashburton for five years, prior to heading home to

He said the win was the realisation of a dream. “My wife Leanne and I worked really hard and to win this is incredible.” Contest Chairman and former Grand Finalist Dean Rabbidge said he was thrilled to see an Otago Southland farmer take the title home. “History has been made tonight in a proud farming province and we couldn’t be happier.” NZ Young Farmers CEO Terry Copeland said Nigel was the epitome and pinnacle of what future leaders in the Agri-sector need to be. “The FMG Young Farmer of the Year continues to showcase the brilliant young leadership our organisation strives to develop and Nigel is an example of this as an inspiring future leader. “ Third place went to another Lincoln alumni, Andrew Wiffen, who represented Tasman. The 29-year-old West Coast Dairy farmer graduated from Lincoln University with a Commerce and Agriculture degree and worked on dairy farms in Canterbury before setting up a 200 cow dairy farm near Hokitika with his family.

Young Farmers’ chair awarded top scholarship New Zealand Young Farmers’ chairperson Jason Te Brake has become the youngest recipient ever to receive a prestigious Emerging Primary Industries Scholarship. The scholarship is a partnership between the Ministry for Primary Industries in conjunction with AGMARDT and the Te Hono Movement, and is a prestigious accolade for young leaders. He will now attend the 2017 Te Hono Movement Stanford Bootcamp and said he was honoured to be one of the youngest to receive the scholarship. “It is a fantastic opportunity to spend time at a world-renowned university,” Jason said. “It’s a huge privilege and the collaboration across the food industry at senior levels that it offers is important in terms of adding value and prosperity to the industry.” Jason, who has a chartered accounting and finance background has been a board member of NZ Young Farmers for four years and has graduated from the Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme. NZ Young Farmers CEO Terry Copeland said the scholarship reinforced the significant role the organisation plays

in providing tomorrow’s leaders in the Primary Industry. “We continue to strive to develop leaders who will make a vital impact and we are immensely proud of Jason’s achievements to date. “He has shown outstanding leadership within our organisation and we are delighted to see him expand that capability further. “To be the youngest recipient of the scholarship shows the depth of maturity

and professionalism he and many of our members display on an ongoing basis and we believe our organisation is key to developing future leaders that will add value to the primary sector.” Mr Copeland said the purpose of the scholarship was to recognise those leaders who demonstrate the best potential to make a difference as a senior leader in the primary industries, and to support their continuing professional development. ¢
