The History. Around three years ago I was driving through Leeston and saw an auction flag outside a building that I had never taken any notice of before. The building was the once iconic Farmers Co-op which I am told used to operate five cashiers and sell everything from toys and groceries to garden supplies. Thirty years on from its hey day it was looking less than iconic and was priced accordingly. I had just the right amount of naivety to buy the 1200m2 behemoth and all its hidden problems, like the plumbed bathtubs in the ceiling to catch the rainwater, earthquake damage and rotten floors. The Idea. The post-quake and post Global Financial Crisis economic environment certainly wasn't yielding any potential business uses for the building and every prospecWhat’s coming up Jan.20 - Indoor bowls training night. tive tenant wanted to pay so little it didn't warrant putting hammer to nail to get them set up. I decided that I would start a business that would generate the money to fix the building. I performed a rudimentary public poll to find out what the locals wanted most. The typical conversation went as follows. Me, “What would you like to see in the building?” Local resident, “I heard you were putting a brothel in it, but anyway a gym would be nice.” The most common theme to come back was that the people wanted a gym so I set about writing a business plan for the best gym to suit our community. The process involved completely rethinking the gym experience and a bit of spying on other gyms. I decided that in a small community a gym had to be both specialist and generalist enough to appeal to all

the small demographic groups and that one person’s experience mustn't impinge on another’s. For this reason the gym is segmented so that those who want to lift free-weights and grunt can grunt themselves silly and those that want to quietly watch the Ellen Degeneres show on an exercycle can happily do so. The other important factor is that the
gym had to be a place where a first time user or gym sceptic can get all the knowledge and support they need to use the gym to improve their lives. For this reason we offer free health and body composition testing, free gym programs and free one on one fitness consultations for all members. The Development. True to the developers mantra the project took much longer and cost a lot more than expected, and there was a serious disconnect between the district council, architects and developers. However in June 2012 during a winter snow
storm we launched Carbon Gym. The People. It has been a pleasure to watch so many of our gym users improve their strength, agility and health to the point of dramatically improving their lives. We have had elderly members who have gained lost functions like climbing stairs, starting chainsaws and playing with grandchildren. A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL! My name is Jo Eden and I'm taking over Brenda's role of reporter for the Leeston Farmers’ Market. Paul and I have lived in Leeston for 12years now, and I've been involved with the market over the past two years. Firstly I was selling perennials and roses in the spring and early summer, and this past year, manning the second hand clothing stall for Ellesmere Cooperating Church's World Mission project. CHRISTMAS TWILIGHT MARKET On the last Saturday before Christmas, we held a market from 5-8pm, along with some of the Leeston retailers. It was a balmy evening, and many of you came out to do some last minute shopping, making it a great success. There was a good variety of stalls, which included curios, fresh flowers, crafts, fresh fruit and vegetables, plant stalls, food stalls and a second hand clothing sale. Later in the evening we sang carols led by the Filipino Lifetouch Fellowship music group. A FAREWELL - Sadly it was the last market for a very faithful marketeer, Margaret. She is moving to the North Island to be near her daughter. We hope the transition to this new stage of life will be easier than expected. Thank you for all you have done for the market over a number of years.
FIRST MARKET FOR 2015 will be on the 17th January. CHILDREN 12 & under! Have your own stall at this first market for the year - only $2 to register – ph 3295519 Parental supervision required.
If you make or grow anything, and want to be part of the Leeston Market, please contact Daphne at e-dbrook@xtra.co.nz, or phone 3295-519 evenings. Free2be Massage Therapy

Cont. from front pg. dramatic weight loss and improved quality of life. We have seen runners use the gym to prepare for their first half and full marathons and we have seen dozens of injured people regain their functionality with the help of the Leeston Physio team and Thaddeus, the gym manager. We have discovered that anything you do can be done better when supplemented with gym training, you can work harder, work longer, party harder and play better, among other benefits. We have also enjoyed having partnerships with Southbridge Div’ 1 rugby, two Ellesmere College youth confidence programs, Southbridge Fire Brigade Combat Challenge team and a number of local clubs and charities. The Product. We have the biggest and most comprehensive gym in the Selwyn district with
8 specialist fitness areas and an easy-going atmosphere. Membership is $16.50/week or $399 for 6 months which includes free ongoing health/ body composition analysis, free tailored fitness programs and free basic person training from highly regarded Fitness Consultant and gym Manager Thaddeus Scott. We also have discount rates for teams, emergency services, youth and senior citizens. Our hours are 4:30am 11:00 pm, 7 days. We currently have three fitness classes, ‘Enigma Spin’ where you can bring your own bike or use a provided spin bike for a great workout, we have Booty Barre which is a stand-up palates style workout and Apes H.I.T which is an in-house developed circuit class which I
would be so bold as to say is the best circuit/metabolic class in the industry. We also have Flip Gymnastics starting 26th January run by Ruth Engles who is new to the district offering training in vault, high/low beam, parallel bars, uneven bars, Olympic rings, tumble and more. Swim spa, we have taken possession of a 6m swim spa for children and adult learn-toswim sessions, injury rehabilitation, team recovery and general fitness s is set to be operational by late January. The Future. We are still developing new ideas, renovating the building and improving the service. The only guarantee is that every month there will be something new and better than before. PROHIBITED FIRE SEASON INTRODUCED A prohibited fire season has been declared in Selwyn District, effective from 10am Wednesday 7 January 2015. Under the restrictions no outdoor fires can be lit in the district. The burning of crop stubble is also not allowed. Gas barbeques with a high pressure water source at hand are allowed but not charcoal barbeques. Fires are also not permitted in Council reserves. During a prohibited fire season all fire permits previously issued by the Council are also cancelled. The district’s Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer, Douglas Marshall, says that vegetation in Selwyn District is now very dry and a prohibited fire season has been introduced to help ensure that the risk of fires breaking out is minimised. “Selwyn has been experiencing hot, dry weather along with strong winds and this provides ideal conditions for fires to spread quickly,” he says. Mr Marshall says that people need to be very vigilant in this weather to avoid any activities that could start a fire. “We would discourage people from mowing the lawn or operating machinery during the heat of the day as sparks can easily ignite in the heat, and instead carry out these activities when it is cooler. Letting off fireworks is also not allowed in the current conditions.” Mr Marshall says the Council will be reviewing the prohibited fire season status regularly and will lift restrictions as soon as it is considered safe to do so. Reducing fire risk: You can help to reduce the fire risk, and make sure that fire services can quickly access your property to put out a fire if one does start, by: · avoiding operating lawn mowers or other machinery during hot weather as sparks can easily ignite in these conditions, and waiting until the
weather is cooler to mow laws or operate machinery. If you do need to use machinery or a lawn mower, having a source of water nearby for fire firefighting is advisable as a precaution · regularly checking and maintaining machinery and equipment so it is safe to operate · disposing of ashes from an indoor fire safely in a metal container and use approved incinerators · keeping a hose connected that can reach round the house · storing firewood and other flammable materials away from the house · keeping grass away from under hedges · in rural areas keep a clear space between your house and buildings and vegetation like trees, shrubs and long grass to act as a fire break. Keep this space watered and green if possible or construct it from non- flammable material like paving stones. · make sure your property number is easy to see and that it has a clear access way four metres wide and high so that fire services can easily access your property if needed Certain types of plants are more flammable than others. To find out more about planting less flammable species and reducing fire risk on your property visit www.selwyn.govt.nz/fire and select the ‘fire safety’ link. Fire danger is one reason why you might need to leave your home in a hurry. All homes should have a household emergency plan with information on how you would leave your home quickly. You should also have emergency supplies. For more information about household emergency plans and supplies visit www.getthru.govt.nz. If you see a fire burning out of control, phone 111 immediately to report it.

A good field of 26 riders turned out on Thursday 8th for it and battled a strong NE wind on the homeward leg. Regular Leeston rider Greg Manson did a huge 630km ride before Xmas over Arthurs PassGreymouth-Reefton and back to CHCH via Lewis Pass, and his fitness showed out to take fastest time for the third year running. His time was only about a minute slower than some he has been recording in the handicap races prior to Xmas. Top CHCH runner and sometimes duathlete, Brett Tingay, and Steve Caldwell half a minute behind him, were the only others to break 25 minutes. Mark Maddren, Jason McKenzie & Nigel Thomas were the first three Development riders home and recorded times well under 30 minutes which
