in Killinchy and the children attend the nearby Dunsandel Primary School. Warwick knew his time as President was coming up so after a lot of thought came up with this year’s theme. This is very close to his heart and passion. He served as head of the sheep section for 4 years before becoming Junior Vice President. Their farm runs 1700 ewes, 1500 crossbred ewes and 200 stud Poll Dorsets and Suffolk sheep. With the Poll Dorsets being this years feature breed. Showing sheep at the Ellesmere Show has always been a rewarding experience for the Boons, with many prizes being won with their stud stock as well as in the flock sheep and prime lamb sections. Fitting together with playing in the pipe band since he had left school
means that show days are very full and eventful for him. And this year is not going to be any different. You may think that once the show day arrives then Warwick’s role as President starts to relax, but no! During the day he and Amanda must make sure that all is running smoothly with a lot of people, and dignitaries, to meet and greet. There is the Past Presidents’ morning tea, prizes and awards to give out and speeches to give. All in all a very exhausting day after a long few months of bringing it all together. Warwick wishes to acknowledge the tireless effort made by the show secretary, Annabel Smith. He states that it’s not only the committee but the community that puts on the annual show, together with the stewards, judges and
the past presidents and committee members that turn up faithfully at the working bees to make sure the public all enjoy this well oiled machine in action.

SAFER SPEED FOR SHANDS ROAD A reduced speed limit has been introduced on part of Shands Road and in the intersections connecting with the road in order to improve to improve the safety of this area for motorists and other road users. A new 80 kilometre per hour speed limit applies on Shands Road from south of Trents Road to Sir James Wattie Drive north of Marshs Road. The same 80 kilometre per hour speed limit also applies on Trents Road, Blakes Road and Marshs Road to east and west of the intersections with Shands Road. Signage will be installed within the next week to mark the areas where the new speed limits begin. The Council’s Asset Manager: Transportation, Andrew Mazey, says that, with the opening of the first stage of the new Christchurch Southern Motorway late last year, traffic volumes along Shands Road in the Prebbleton area have increased by 35%. “There have been a number of crashes along Shands Road and the intersections with this road south of Christchurch. Many crashes have been due to people failing to stop at controlled intersections along this busy arterial route. Reducing the speed limit in this area will allow motorists more time to stop or slow down for other drivers if required and should help to improve the safety of these roads.”
Police also support the reduction of speed on Shands Road. “About half of Canterbury's crashes every year are at intersections and predominantly involve drivers approaching intersections too fast,” says Inspector Al Stewart. “This reduction in speed will increase the safety of all road users in the area.” Intersection upgrades along Shands Road were undertaken by both the Selwyn District and Christchurch City Councils in 2003 and 2004. Further major roading and intersection improvements are planned as part of stage two of the Christchurch Southern Motorway project. Construction of stage two of the project is expected to start in 2015/16 by the New Zealand Transport Agency. Selwyn District Council carried out a road safety campaign in conjunction with the Police this year which highlighted the importance of stopping at intersections. Canterbury Police will be monitoring this area to ensure motorists are complying with the new speed

THE HISTORY OF THE ELLESMERE A & P SHOW The Ellesmere Agricultural & Pastoral Association was formed in 1869 and 2013 marks our 143rd show. The Ellesmere A&P Showgrounds are on outskirts of the Leeston township, just 30 minutes south west of Christchurch. The Ellesmere A&P Association is a not-for-profit organisation and is responsible for organising and staging the Ellesmere A&P Show as well as other activities throughout the year. The Ellesmere A&P
Association continues to support and promote New Zealand agricultural excellence and innovation through events, competition and education. The Association is run by a committee of up to 30 elected members. Some of the committee members are second or third generation, with their fathers and grandfathers having being active committee members. The Association employs a part-time secretary/ treasurer and a part-time caretaker. The rest of the work involved in organising
and promoting the South Island’s largest one-day A&P show, along with building, repairs and upkeep of the grounds is also carried out on a voluntary basis by committee members and Past Presidents throughout the year and at show time. The committee is also extremely grateful for sponsorship and support from local businesses.

ELLESMERE 30TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS Earlier this year the Ellesmere Raceway celebrated 30 years of racing on its current site. 25th April was the day and Allan Batt put together a superb program pictorial from over the years, a real collector’s piece of history for the club. The track was officially opened on its permanent site on Sunday 24th April 1983. Batt’s contribution detailed many of the highs and lows of the club trying to find a permanent site within the county. Originally known as the Rakaia River Bed Racing Association, then Ellesmere Stock Rod & Dirt Bike Association, many different locations were set up for racing over the documented years. Efforts to have the use of Osborne Park in Doyleston as a permanent venue were not“rescinded” Batt writes, before the Ellesmere Domains Board gave approval for use of the land where the track now resides. Once this was done, many many hours of work and fundraising were undertaken to build the current facility. As a local resident of the district, Ellesmere was the place to go all those years ago and while regarded as a “Black or B Grade track” I can remember many individual meetings that perhaps showed the innovative way to many of the top SNZ tracks. Mini Rods were a class introduced before emerging as mini sprints which gave Ellesmere its true local class. The mini rod rules believe it or not formed the base of the mini stock stock class which has certainly caught the imagination of many speedway fans. Com-
bining modifieds and sprintcars when both classes were developing and short on numbers was scorned upon by a number of the sports officials, but it served a purpose and presented the Ellesmere locals with many good memories. Who can forget The Pacifica National Sprintcar Challenge clearly a long-time favourite memory of many especially when that man Barry Butterworth resided in town. Talking speedway in Ellesmere and most will remember the contributions on the track of many of the family names. One man whose extended family and friends lived and breathed speedway both on the track and behind the scenes, was awarded life membership of the club in 1987. Selwyn Burt, his brothers and family hold a historic place in the history of the Ellesmere Raceway. Join with them many other names like Batt, Lambie, Taylor, Bishop, Liddell, Burke, Carrodus, Mills, Millar and others who have contributed, it’s a rich speedway history indeed. Such tracks based on so much enthusiasm and the need for a good time does fall on tough times into day’s modern world. Ellesmere can be thankful that with a few young faces, (never enough) some of the old rear guard have come back to help out to keep one of Ellesmere’s underrated sporting facilities alive. The track has always had a close relationship with the Canterbury Speedway Association back in the Templeton days which continues today under the Ruapuna banner. It has always welcomed and has good support
from some of their classes as well as some competitors from Woodford Glen. Anniversary racing took place from all the regular classes where Tyson Carroll had the best of the Hobby’s, No’s Six Cylinder Sprinters saw Brian Humm, Bob Lambie and Gordon Rattray collect wins while Mathew Leversledge picked up two wins in the TQ class. Scott Bailey was the other winner. ¼ midgets were on show and Brad Shearman picked up the two wins ahead of the Nelson pairing of Jay Basalaj, Jayden Bradley and Bailey Paterson. Stewart Cockburn had a run in the Production class and recorded two wins with the other going to car Ricky Donnelly with Robbie Paltridge mixing it up. ATVs front men were Craig Cox, Matt Mustchin and Billy Hobbs. Anthony Dawson took two wins in the Sprintcar / Modified races while Nigel Niven scored the other while local Lyndsay Gilbert’s car kept them honest as did Andrew Naven. Midget racing saw placing’s recorded by one of the hottest, local star Davey Kerr, Scott Miller and Brian Barclay. Selwyn Everett raced at the opening meeting and took to the track in the midget for this anniversary event picking up a couple of seconds, before fitness caught up with him as it was a number of seasons since Everett last got behind the wheel. Modified Sprints saw Ben Gimore take the challenge to Tom Lumsden, Invercargill’s Ray Phillips and Nigel Jackson. The axe was about to fall on the MX track before Scott McLean and
“Pies” got involved to round up the boys. Modified Rookie Hayden McKay still so damn good on a bike had the best of the bunch heading off Dean Baird, Jason Korstanje and Darryl Webb. The OLD BOYS RACE involving some of the original club members was lost on many as the PA system finally had had enough despite furious fanning during commentary. With AJ Batt and Aaron Dreaver joining me it was perhaps just too much to handle and it died with the last anniversary race of the day. It was Mike Taylor who took out the win on the line from Kevin Burt and Kerry Millar in third. Richard Carrodus came in 4th ahead of Grant Clausen Alan Bishop, Gary Burt and Gordon Barnett to round out the field.

PHYLYS THE FARM TRUCK A fun rhyming children’s story about a new farm truck and her adventures. The folk at Castle Hill high country farm are not too impressed when they first meet Phylys, the new shiny, flash city truck. How will this gleaming new arrival cope with the steep hills, wide rivers and rough tracks? But Phylys has a twinkle in her eye and soon shows she’ll give anything a go. She’s not put off by a few skids, crunches, sheep poo, high fords, soggy bogs, getting stuck and heaps of hard work. And in the end, Phylys is a hero – the plucky truck saves the day! With a story that parallels Christine’s own story of going to live on a hill country station from the city, Phylys the Farm Truck will appeal greatly to kids – and their parents and teachers too. Beautifully illustrated, with Susan Elijas’s quirky collage design, Phylys the Farm Truck
will engage not only farm kids who will see aspects of their daily life in the story, but also city kids who will gain a glimpse of a different kind of New Zealand life. Quintessentially Kiwi, Phylys the Farm Truck is a musthave for every Kiwi kid’s bookshelf! Christine Fernyhough, author of the best-selling memoir The Road to Castle High: A High Country Love Story is well known as a leading Auckland philanthropist, having set up Books in Homes and then the Gifted Kids programme for highachieving children in low-decile schools. In 2003 she was a recent widow when she bought the legendary Castle Hill Station, near Porter Heights in the Canterbury Alps. She has since transformed it into a highperforming farm. The station came to more national attention in 2007 when she published the bestselling The Road to Castle
High: A High Country Love Story.
Then, with her husband John Bougen, she published Ben and Mark: Boys of the High Country, and in 2012, the picture book for young readers, Dart of Castle Hill. She remains active in both rural and urban committees, is in demand as a public speaker, and in 2011 was made a CNZM for services to the community.
As another month rolls over we are just eleven weeks until Christmas, can you believe it? It’s the best time of year, it’s starting to warm up, with daylight savings the evenings are lighter which is fabulous for getting into the garden, thinking about summer bbq’s and meeting with friends. Market day in Leeston is a bit like that too. Our stall holders become great friends and it’s an awesome place to meet up, grab a sausage or some delicious churro and catch up. There is always something yummy to tempt the taste buds. Like inclement weather than makes you feel low, at the Market there is a little bit of sadness to convey this update. Our Calf Club organiser has succumbed to ill health so it is with disappointment that we announce that Calf Club is cancelled indefinitely. We are ever hopeful things will improve and as always we will keep you posted through our updates. The next Leeston Market will be held on Ellesmere A
& P Show Day, Saturday 19th October. I have attended the last two shows and the weather was not kind at all so don your glad rags as this year the weather will be brilliant, you heard it here first. We’ll be at the Leeston Market until lunch time so come and see us first and then go on down the road to the Show. It’ll be a grand day in the country and not one to be missed. The Leeston Market is on F a c e b o o k : www.facebook.com/ LeestonMarket so please check us out and LIKE us while you are there.
Remember that we always welcome new stall holders. Please contact the Leeston Market Committee Secretary – Shirley Fisher on email – shirleydfisher@msn.com for a stall application form and further information, or, you can call Anna Nurse on 3248212 or 021 1042712. For November we will be having three market days, Saturday the 2nd, Saturday the 16th and also Saturday the 30th so start thinking about Christmas as the stall holders certainly will be and we’ll have just what you need for those Christmas stockings. Join us at the Leeston Market on Saturday 19th October – 9 am till noon. We look forward to seeing you there - whatever the weather ~ Brenda Franz

LIVE TO RIDE
RECIPE CORNER Walnut season again, this is a great recipe to use some up…. And I guarantee you’ll be making it over and over, it is just so tasty!! A favourite recipe in our house, it was given to me by a Caniwi friend (Canadian who shifted here) and it had come down a number of generations in their family. It is quick to mix (about 5 mins) and makes a lovely dessert/supper cake - and when you get those unexpected guests, can be in the oven and on the bench before you know it. Best eaten hot, warm or cold… I promise you it won’t last long!
This recipe was submitted by Bronwyn. She and her family live in Brookside, she works as an office manager. And enjoys cooking, particularly desserts and home baking. She has a few tricks and recipes up her sleeve to be shared with you over the next few months. This from 25 years of catering. If there are any recipes you would like the community to know about please send them to theellesmereecho@gmail.com
Selwyn District Council staff will be at the Ellesmere Show and will have information on a range of topics. Road safety are promoting the new motorcycle campaign “Live to Ride”. As well as motorcycle safety messages, we’re offering subsidised motorcycle skill coaching in November and February next year. Find out more about these courses and how it could help improve your riding experience. You can also register for the next course in Lincoln on 30 November. The Police will also be on the Council show site with
one of their motorbikes on display. It will be well worth coming in for a look and a chat with us about motorcycle safety and skills coaching. and pick
up some information either for yourself, family or friends that enjoy motorcycling.
QUICK BUTTER WALNUT CAKE Beat together until creamy - 2 eggs 1 cup brown sugar Add and mix slightly to combine - 5 tbsp. flour 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/8 tsp baking soda 1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts 1 tsp vanilla (optional) 2 tbsp. melted butter Melt 2 tbsp. butter in a pie pan or shallow baking dish (do the melted butter for the above at the same time). Tip into the centre of the pie or round sponge pan, swilling the butter around the edges. Bake for 15-20 minutes at approx. 180c and don’t worry if it sinks in the middle when cooked. While cooking, melt approx. 1-1 1/2 tbsp. more butter in the microwave. When the cake is removed from the oven, brush the butter over the top making sure some dribbles down the sides and sprinkle (dredge) liberally with icing sugar. Serve hot or warm….yum… and will keep a day or two if you can hide it long enough. To store, simply leave in the tin and cover with a teatowel Enjoy, Bronwyn

THEILERI - WHAT? A NEW PROBLEM TO NZ You may have heard over recent weeks and months of a new disease spreading through the cattle of New Zealand causing anaemia, collapse and in some cases death. I thought I would take this opportunity to give you a quick run-down of the disease and let you know what will be happening to help farmers though it. I should mention here that this disease is not a threat to humans or the food chain as it can only affect cattle. Theileriosis is the disease in question. It is spread by ticks (Haemaphysalis longicornis to be precise) and attacks the red blood cells of cattle, as these cells die the animal cannot hold oxygen in its blood and that’s when we see disease. If treated the animal will recover as its immunity kicks in and fights off the infection. At the moment the majority of cattle are being treated with blood transfusions. These give the cow enough healthy cells to live while she fights off the disease. It may sound a bit far-fetched giving a blood transfusion to a cow but it can be done relatively easily for somewhere in the region
of $200. In principle it works the same as in humans, but just on a bigger scale. There is a drug that can treat the disease; however it isn’t currently very easily available in New Zealand so it may be some time before we can use it. Thankfully this disease is currently restricted to the Upper North Island. As it relies on ticks to spread, and ticks rely on warm weather (like what they get up in Northland and Waikato) we shouldn’t be seeing the disease down here any time soon. The one cow in Canterbury that has had the disease was brought down from Northland so shouldn’t really be counted. All in all it’s a nasty disease, but at the moment isn’t affecting our herds. As always we should be vigilant with our stock to ensure they remain healthy and not hesitate to contact your veterinarian if you are suspicious of either this or any other unusual disease. TE WAIHORA MILESTONE REACHED Environment Canterbury and Ngāi Tahu announced today the significant milestone of 100,000 plants in the ground as part of New Zealand’s largest collaborative freshwater clean-up effort, Whakaora Te Waihora. Whakaora Te Waihora is a joint restoration programme between Ngāi Tahu, the Ministry for the Environment and Environment Canterbury. It is a shared commitment to restore the cultural and ecological values of Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere. Addressing guests at a planting ceremony in the Kaituna catchment on the lake today, Environment Canterbury Chair of Commissioners Dame Margaret Bazley said Whakaora Te Waihora is important for all Cantabrians and New Zealand as a whole. “Environment Canterbury is proud to be playing its part. In 2011, a relationship agreement and shared commitment between Environment Canterbury and the Te Waihora Management Board (representing Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu) was signed to confirm the restoration and rejuvenation of the mauri and ecosystem health of Te Waihora. “Whakaora Te Waihora is all about working together. This collaborative work has seen many successes over the last 2 years. I acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of the Cogovernors and the project teams led by Amanda Ward. “This work is an excellent example of the way the joint work programme between Ngāi Tahu and Environment Canterbury known as Tuia is developing so successfully,” Dame Margaret said. “We are here to mark 100,000 plants in the ground. This is a significant milestone – but there is a lot more to do. There is much activity throughout the catchment with biodiversity work, science investigations, cultural work, engagement with landowners and lake level management. “All of this work is contributing enormously towards
putting Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere, a national treasure, firmly on the road to recovery,” Dame Margaret concluded. At the same ceremony, Tā Mark Solomon, Kaiwhakahaere, Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu pointed out that Te Waihora has helped sustain over 23 generations of the Ngāi Tahu Whanui. “It remains a major mahinga kai for our people – a source of the materials and kai that feed us, strengthen us and enable us to manaaki our whānau and our manuhiri,” Tā Mark said. “Food production sits at the heart of Ngāi Tahu culture and identity. It is the cornerstone of our social, spiritual and economic wellbeing and it is a symbol of the tribe’s continuing relationship with the traditions and history of place. “Successive generations of Ngāi Tahu have treasured this area. The Kaituna Valley was a traditional Ngāi Tahu accessway to the great māhinga kai of Te Waihora and Kaituna Lagoon is still an important food source. “It is a good place, therefore, for us to mark the hard work of all those who have been involved in the lake restoration through the Whakara Te Waihora partnership, and to recognise and acknowledge the foresight of all the other organisations who started this ecological restoration journey much earlier – especially the Te Waihora Management Board, which began lake planting and enhancement back in 2008. “The six Papatipu Rūnanga involved in the board – Taumutu, Koukourārata, Tūāhuriri, Ōnuku, Wairewa and Rāpaki – recognised the degradation of the lake and had a vision of restoring Ngāi Tahu cultural identity through the rejuvenation of the mauri and life-supporting capacity of Te Waihora.
“Their vision of enhancing this great wetland for all New Zealanders took a big step forward with the development of Whakaora Te Waihora in 2011 and now we can feel heartened that the lake is in safe hands and that positive changes are underway. “Whakora Te Waihora is a symbol of the coming together of over 32 stakeholder groups, who all believe in, and are all committed to the lake’s restoration,” Ta Mark concluded. “We can do it. We will do it. And we will do it together. Mō tātou, ā, mō kā uri a muri ake nei – For us and our children after us.”
Restoration plan
A 35-year restoration plan identifying the key outcomes, values and long-term management options was jointly developed and approved in December 2011. In August 2011, a long-term relationship agreement and shared commitment was signed between the Te Waihora Management Board (for Ngāi Tahu) and Environment Canterbury. At the same time, the then Minister for the Environment announced $11.6 million combined funding in support of the initiative. Riparian planting is an important part of Whakaora Te Waihora (and also of all Canterbury Water Management Strategy biodiversity work) because it helps protect the ecosystem and restore mahinga kai. The Selwyn-Waihora zone implementation programme for Te Waihora was recently completed. Work is progressing towards an opening consent for the lake providing for the cultural values recognised in the amendment to the Water Conservation Order covering the lake in 2011.

She will explain our local Police’s position and what we can expect from them, and the laws around these drugs and the people who take them, then (in some cases) drive or work at their employment under the influence of this type of drug etc. - Jane Donaldson, Environmental Services Manager, form the Ashburton District Council, to explain the Council position and what they can and can’t do about this situation. -A Medical Professional from our own Rakaia Medical Center who has seen many years of what drugs can do to unsuspecting people.
We are trying to get someone from the National Poison Centre to make a presentation about all the science around these drugs and what they can do (and in a lot of cases do) to a person taking this stuff. Please come along to get the truth about these terrible drugs now legally available throughout New Zealand, and we may even be able to work out what we can do about them in our district (at least)! The meeting will be in the main hall so there will be plenty of room for everyone. Please keep this evening free, Hope to see you there. Regards Neil Pluck RCA Chairman.
LEGAL HIGH SYNTHETIC DRUGS, NOW LEGALLY SOLD IN CANTERBURY. People of the Canterbury District with homes, businesses, clubs, groups, schools etc, where you look out for and care about your younger folk (i.e. 18 years and upwards) and may know of, or may have heard of someone who takes these new Synthetic Cannabis R18 Drugs now legally freely available throughout NZ. Rakaia now has the only one of these stores between Timaru and ChCh, and if you are being affected in any way (either directly or indirectly) by these legal drugs, please come along to this meeting being organized by the Rakaia Community Association, on Friday the 18th at 7.30 pm at our Community Center, to hear for yourself what sort of effect these things can have on your people. Please see the advert elsewhere on this page
for more details on who will be speaking at the meeting. And also sign the petition we have had running for a number of weeks which we will present to Jo Goodhew (our MP) on the night. Our smaller communities of the Canterbury district take great pride in how well we look out for and support all things that our younger people are involved in, through all manner of groups and clubs and so on (mostly volunteer run), But these legal High drug outlets do the total opposite, by making freely available at a very cheap price, drugs that can permanently damage or even ruin one of our younger folk at just one smoke, all produced and sold for a quick profit. Hope you can come along to hear for yourself all about this stuff now spreading through out our district. Regards Neil Pluck, Chairman, Rakaia Community Association.

OFF THE SHEEP’S BACK SOME OF THE EVENTS THAT YOU CAN SEE AT THE SHOW THE NEW ZEALAND COWBOY CHALLENGE Is a timed competition with obstacles designed to not only push horse and rider out of their traditional comfort zone but also to test the communication and horsemanship of each rider. The emphasis is on a soft and willing horse rather than speed. These kind of competitions are becoming a very popular sport in the USA and it has been embraced by New Zealand riders as it fits right in with this country's love of extreme sports. The organisers of each Cowboy Challenge decide which 13 of the 68 obstacles in the official NZCCA Rule book to use at their event. Although there are clear guidelines on
how each obstacle is to be designed and ridden, competitors do not know prior to the event which ones they will encounter. No course is the same as terrain varies, and each obstacle has several degrees of difficulty (rating -1R to 5R) for the organiser to choose from. A score is given for each obstacle by two qualified judges, and an overall score is given for Horsemanship and Speed. Cowboy Challenge is “Riding with Purpose”. Both rider and horse enjoy their job and enjoy their relationship Come along and see this exciting new sport that is suitable for all ages and skill levels, sizes shapes and breeds of horse and rider.
THE COUNTRY KIDS’ COMPETITION Competed for by the four local primary schools, Dunsandel, Leeston, Southbridge and Springston. Teams of three go head-to-head in a number of farm related activities and teamwork.
Activities include catching greasy pigs, feeding calves, colouring lambs, sack races in wool packs and anything else that will entertain both the contestants and spectators alike.
THE CRT FARMLANDS “MUSTER-CHEF” JUNIOR CHALLENGE COMPETITION 2013 The Marketing and Promotions Committee of the A & P Association is again very excited to be hosting the hugely successful CRT Farmlands “Muster-Chef” Competition. The competition will be held within the Show’s main feature tent and is the brainchild of Chef and Food extraordinaire Mr Paul Robinson of ‘Food Solutions’ and CPIT. Paul is a chef of significant talent and a great entertainer and excels in working with a variety of people whether that is students, private individuals, the public and larger crowds. He has presented at many food shows both within New Zealand and abroad and previously at the Ellesmere Show. While the atrocious weather conditions last year reduced the overall attendance at last year’s Show this event was still well patronised, very entertaining and attracted good crowds throughout the day to see local school Principals Peter Verstappen (Southbridge) and Gavin Kidd (Ellesmere College), former Canterbury and All Black Rugby Player - Sam Broomhall, Green Party MP Eugenie Sage, Selwyn District Deputy Mayor - Sarah Walters and NZ Gardener of the Year – Alan Jones show off their culinary talents. It was a highly contested event with Gavin Kidd coming out the eventual winner in a close final against Peter Verstappen. The CRT Farmlands “Muster-Chef” Junior Challenge competition this year aims to focus on
the preparation of food that fits with this year’s Show theme ‘Off the Sheep’s Back’ but with a new twist. This year the event will be a contest between contestants from the four local schools of Dunsandel, Springston, Leeston and Southbridge. The event is proposed to follow the format of 16 school children (four from each school) bringing to the culinary stage in the Feature Tent a pre-prepared “Extreme Wrap” for judging by a celebrity judge: 10.30 am - Introduction of the 16 school entrants and display of their “Extreme Wrap”. 11.00 am - Top 6 students for “Cook Off” doing a Savoury Omlette Challenge. 12.30 pm Top 2 Competitors selected and “Cook Off” in the Grand Final. 1.30 pm Grand Final. 3.00 pm Winning contestant from the final is announced at the start of the Grand Parade and is then paraded around the ring in a vehicle.

HERBERT EDWARD FINCHAM - PRESIDENT 1913
Herbert Edward Fincham Ellesmere A&P Show President 1913, Sheep, cattle and Clydesdale breeder, 2nd Lieutenant in the Ellesmere Mounted Rifles, and an ardent Rugby player, representing Canterbury Province three times in 1898 as a centre, as well as the Ellesmere district and for a time Captain of the Leeston Rugby Team. Herbert also played in a New Zealand Team that defeated Bedell-Sievwight's Team of English Rugby Players. The Fincham story starts with Thomas Fincham who married Mary Cooper at Governers Bay in 1858, and in 1864 settled on 202 hectares in the SedgemereTaumutu district. There they built a Homestead and named their farm "Willow Glen". Thomas and Mary Fincham were to have a great influence on the Sedgemere District, their home was a centre for District life including early Anglican Church Services, before St Marks Church at Sedgemere was built in 1882. The Homestead also served as the Sedgemere Post Office,
where Lenna Puck and later the Fincham’s granddaughter Virgie Fincham had charge of the mail for 5 pounds/ year. The mail to and from the District came on the daily coach service and eventually the Post Boxes were shifted to the Sedgemere School. Dances in the "Willow Glen" granary continued until 1916, the year the Sedgemere Hall was built. Thomas and Mary had 4 sons and 2 daughters, George farmed "Glenfield" at Lakeside, now owned by Dennis Carter. George had a son, Alfred, a hooker for the Southbridge Rugby Team, but he died young. John, farmed "Stony Gully" Southbridge, now owned by Hamish and Julie Millar, John later moved to West Melton. Robert, farmed at Springston, later at Ngapara Oamaru. Herbert Edward the youngest son. Daughters, Anne married Oscar Johnson, Head Master of Sedgemere school, and Emily married Dan Cant, who eventually farmed "Belzie Park" at Lakeside. Thomas Fincham died in 1895 and his youngest son Herbert Edward took over the management of "Willow Glen" Herbert Edward founded a Southdown Stud Sheep flock in
1905, as well as breeding Shorthorn cattle. The sheep and cattle were surpassed in reputation by the "Willow Glen"Clydesdale horses, with Championships won in Canterbury Show Rings from Christchurch and Rangiora to Timaru and later Hawarden. John Patterson, a long time employee of Herbert Fincham assisted with the preparation and showing of the horses and accompained them on the train as groom. With his "Willow Glen" team, John Patterson won prizes for ploughing and dressage (team turnout) at District ploughing matches. Clydesdales are usually noted for their showy white feather on the pasterns. Herbert Edward, judging at a Malvern ploughing match was impressed by the quality of the working draughts taking part, sired by "Balgarvie" a black pasterned stallion which was imported to New Zealand by John Deans of Homebush, so Herbert Edward arranged to purchase the stallion for his own Stud. In 1917 Herbert Edward married Jessie Kilpatrick Lochhead, of Island Farm, Sedgemere who was a great friend of his sister Emily and niece Virgie. His Mother retired to Christchurch. The year 1918 ushered in a new era for the Finchams as "Willow Glen" was sold in three blocks; the new owners were John Patterson, Tom Brown and the Homestead block sold to
“Willow Glen” Taumutu 1898 Charlie Brown. Later the Brown Brothers sold to the Barnetts and Chambers. The old Homestead was pulled down by the Chambers and a new home built, which was later destroyed by fire and replaced by the current home. Herbert Edward and Jessie Fincham purchased "Ti Kouka"(the cabbage tree) of 305 hectares at The Peaks Hawarden, with the crops in and as harvest was about to begin, he took local men Fred Gulliver, John New Zealand, Len Cant, Dannie Pohio, Joe Teihoka and Dick Strez, all the clever men from Sedgemere, to get the harvest in. Such was Herbert Edwards reputation as a farmer and Stud Stock Breeder and Committee Member of The Canterbury A&P Association, The Hawarden A&P Association elected him as President in 1920. The late Joe Wyllie of Omihi had commented that the Fincham Clydesdales were highly regarded and 6 or 8 were regularly exhibited at the Hawarden Show, providing a challenge to any Judge. The year 1928 saw Herbert Edward elected President of The Canterbury A&P Association. Herbert Edward and Jessie Fincham had no children, but together were a great team and shared a love of horses. Herbert Edward died in 1942 and Jessie continued with "Ti Kouka" with increasing assistance from her nephew Leicester Carl Fincham, who lived at Rangiora and was a lamb buyer for the North Canterbury Freezing Company in Kaiapoi. Leicester was a son of Robert Fincham of Ngapara Oamaru. Eventually Leicester resigned from NCF Kaiapoi and put capital into "Ti Kouka" in the 1950s and
Jessie retired into a rest home in Christchurch, continuing to look forward to reports on how the farm was progressing, right up until her death. The Southdown Stud Flock which was founded by Herbert Edward, was transferred to Leicester Fincham's son J Keith Fincham in 1961. J Keith Fincham also founded a Corriedale Stud Flock in1968. Like his great uncle, J Keith Fincham also played Rugby for Canterbury - 3 games during 1953-1954. J Keith Fincham was actively involved on the Canterbury A&P Committee as chairman of the Shearing Committee. In 2005 the Shearing Section of the Canterbury A&P Association introduced the J Keith Fincham Memorial, awarded annually for outstanding contribution to the Shearing Section in Honour of Canterbury stalwart and 1992 President J Keith Fincham, and for his years of dedication and commitment to the Shearing Section. Today "Ti Kouka" is farmed by J Keith Fincham’s son David and family, specialising in organic production, including some cropping. Both the Southdown and Corriedale flocks have been withdrawn and the farm faces the challenge of irrigation development for the future. Today the "Willow Glen" blocks at Sedgemere are farmed by Geoff Donald, Warwick Coles and Davd and Helen Tilson. Local Ellesmere descendants of the Fincham Family, who will be attending the Show and presenting the Beef awards, are brothers Alan and Peter Hastings, grandsons of Emily (nee Fincham) and Dan Cant and great grandsons of Thomas and Mary Fincham.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT FOR ART ENTRIES TE WAIHORA-LAKE ELLESMERE Calling local artists, photographers, film makers! The deadline is nearing to get your entry form in for the Te Waihora -Lake Ellesmere themed competition and exhibition to be held in early November. This is a great opportunity to get ‘art that makes a difference’ in front of environmental decision makers. Entry forms have to be in by 28 October. Waihora Ellesmere Trust is organising the event alongside its public 2013 Living Lake Symposium at Lincoln University on 7 and 8 November, with the kind support of Creative Communities New Zealand, Selwyn District. The competition and exhibition theme is Te Waihora-Lake Ellesmere—Expressions of the Living Lake. This encompasses people’s connection to Te Waihora-Lake Ellesmere, and the diversity of values held for the lake and its catchment. WET is keen to see a wide selection of artworks that represent the lake, or tell stories of what the lake means to people who live, work or enjoy visiting and recreational activities in the area. The competition is open to all ages and entry is free. However, artworks will be accepted at the discretion of the organising committee, particularly for the exhibition, due to limited space. Entrants need to comply with the terms and conditions, which are available on WET’s website at www.wet.org.nz, along with an entry form.
There are four categories: · Painting and printmaking (original print to be entered) · Photography · Sculpture and Maori art forms · Film, with an open section and a separate school-age section. Prizes will be awarded for artworks that best capture the theme in each category. There will also be a ‘people’s choice’ award. Works accepted for the public exhibition on 7 and 8 November may also be offered for sale by the artists. WET is seeking sponsorship for competition awards. Any local support will be gratefully accepted and publicly acknowledged. About WET and Te WaihoraLake Ellesmere Waihora Ellesmere Trust is a community organisation dedicated to the improvement of the health and biodiversity of the lake and its catchment. The lake, one of New Zealand’s most important wetland systems, is a brackish, shallow lagoon with an average depth of 1.4m. Covering around 20,000 hectares, Te Waihora-Lake Ellesmere is New Zealand’s fifth largest lake and is internationally significant for its wildlife abundance. For more information www.wet.org.nz

HORORATA PARISH SPRING FAIR The Hororata Parish Spring Fair, held annually on Labour Day, has been providing families a fun day out for over 18 years. Traditionally run on the grounds of the St John’s Stone Church this year’s event will be held at the Hororata Domain. “The fair has grown considerably over the past six years with more stall holders wanting to attend and people from not only Hororata but the wider Selwyn and surrounding districts enjoying the event, we have simply out grown the St John’s Church grounds,” explained Fair Committee Chair Lucy Cookson. “With the growth we not only need more space for the fair activities but better, safer parking and to get away from the busy intersection of Downs and Hororata road. It is a little bit sad not to be holding the fair in the shadows of the Stone Church but the opportunities that the Hororata Domain offers the event are very exciting.” While the Spring Fair will be at a new venue, the 2013
event will feature many old favourites including the White Elephant, second hand books, heaps of family entertainment, food and the Country Auction. Creative Kids will be back again with new categories for school children to display their creativity including sandsaucers, 3D model making, textiles, art and bake a cake. This competition has become very popular and is a great way to involve the children in the event. The Young Enterprise area, which was introduced last year, will return. The
program gives five young entrepreneurs the opportunity to feature their bright ideas to the community and make some money for themselves at the Hororata Parish Spring Fair. Prim a r y a g e d children can have a stall site for a
small charge of $10. They are also encouraged to enter a competition to raise funds for a local charity of their choice. “Last year the Spring Fair experienced anything but spring weather with rain, hail and snow, then it poured when we held the Twilight Fair so we are hoping that the 2013 event has better luck and the sun shines! However being at the domain we will have more wet weather options so the event will go ahead regardless,” said Lucy. The Hororata Parish Spring Fair will be held at the Hororata Domain, Labour Day (28th October) from 9.30am to 2.00pm, entry is free. For more information visit www.hororataparish.co.nz

LETTER TO THE EDITOR An open letter to the people in Ellesmere, I admit it! I am at that age when women say “ you know what I am not going to take any bull anymore” so here goes…………… I have learned a new word ‘ berm ‘ :this is the grass verge by the street outside our houses. TV3’s Campbell Live program has just done a feature on the state of berms in Auckland. The Auckland council like our Selwyn District council have found a budget save by cutting the mow rather than cutting the grass. Here in Leeston most householders have taken on this task without hesitation as house-proud gardeners, others struggle through no fault of their own and some
maintain the right to protest at the council policy. I notice as well as the berm cost cut; the grass at the entrance to town and other public spaces is left to become scruffy and the path through Anderson Square is being taken over by weeds. I think Leeston a great town and I am proud to call it home and it worries me that we appear not to care. I hear the ads encouraging us to vote in the local body elections, telling us that these are the people that look after our interests in the community. It makes you think doesn’t it? Mary Atkinson

NEIGHBOURHOOD WEEK Neighbourhood Week takes place from 25 October – 3 November. The week is a great chance for people to get to know their neighbours. “Getting to know your neighbours and creating a Neighbourhood Support group is a good idea,” says Sue Jenkins, the Council’s Neighbourhood Support and Community Response Coordinator. “Once you know your neighbours you are able to help each other in an emergency and it can also be a great way to develop new friendships and make your neighbourhood a safer and more caring place to live. You might also discover it has benefits like being able to share backyard equipment, childcare, recipes, transport or help your
children to meet new friends next door.” To support Neighbourhood Week, the Council has small grants available for neighbourhood get togethers. Grants can to help host events like barbeques, picnics, wine and cheese evenings, a treasure hunt, or a neighbourhood fun day. “The grants can be used for events which help people to meet other people in their neighbourhood or get to know them better,” says Sue. Events can be held any time during October or November. To find out more about the grants please contact Sue Jenkins on 03 347 2800 or 03 318 8338 or email sue.jenkins@selwyn. govt.nz.
IAG PARTNERS SENIORNET TO REACH OUT TO 50+ HOMEOWNERS IAG has joined forces with SeniorNet in an effort to reach older homeowners about the changes to home insurance. Guidance on how to navigate need2know.org.nz IAG’s website providing information about the shift from ‘open-ended’ replacement to specified suminsured home insurance policies – is now available as part of a number of courses offered at SeniorNet’s 88 learning centres nationwide. SeniorNet offers free courses aimed at helping older computer users to b e co me mo re we b proficient. Help with using online tools such as the need2know calculator, which homeowners can use to estimate the sum-insured value of their property, is also provided as part of the tutorial. Speaking about the partnership, Grant Sidaway, Executive Officer for the SeniorNet NZ, said: “IAG contacted us several months
ago about the need to help older people to use Need2Know website and find out more about what’s happening with home insurance. “We thought working it into our existing courses would be a good way to reach our 17,000 members about the changes. “I think it’s great that information about Need2Know is now being taught as part of existing courses on understanding the internet. It will also be incorporated into sessions about how to purchase things on the internet.” IAG’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Craig Dowling, said that IAG had spent a lot of time talking with the diverse communities faced with home insurance changes. “Through this process it became clear that with SeniorNet’s network right across the country, it would be a great partner to work with to help take our message to the +50
community.” “SeniorNet’s reach, and enthusiasm for using the Need2Know programme in its online training, will greatly help +50s’ understanding of the changes and the tools available to adapt to the new requirements.” Need2Know.org.nz features a range of resources including a series of videos hosted by celebrity builder John ‘Cocksy’ Cocks aimed at helping homeowners to better understand their home’s features and how they could impact on rebuilding costs. Need2Know leaflets with information about the changes are available free of charge from all SeniorNet branches. To find your local SeniorNet branch, visit: http:// www.seniornet.org.nz/ learningcentres.asp or telephone: 0800 736 467 (8am – 5pm Monday to Friday).

INDOOR BOWLS
ELLESMERE CHAMPS 2013
CULTIVATION & EXCAVATION CONTRACTORS
The first meeting after the winter season was keenly looked forward to and there was some close racing as each class fought it out for the Ellesmere Championship title. Ellesmere’s Brad Gordon was always near the front of the field in each heat and took out the PRODUCTION title from Ron Koole and Josh Turner. Both Koole and Turner got snagged in traffic in two separate heats which gave the front running Gordon the break he needed for the title. HOBBY title went to Amy Fleete with two wins over Tyson Carroll in second with Toni Painter taking out third. MODIFIED SPRINTS had two Invercargill drivers from Riverside Raceway boost their numbers and these Phillips boys were always at the front of the race. Ben Gilmore tried to mix it with them and succeeded in taking out second place over all. It was Craig Phillips who took out the Ellesmere title from Gilmore with Ray Phillips in third. The competition was also a little hot in the SIX CYCLINDERS early on which saw Rusty Liddell come off a little worse for wear in heat one with a DNF, before completing the remaining heats with no front wing. This cost him a podium position which saw the return of Brian Humm to the top of the
table but he did have to work for it from the back of the field in the second heat where he was headed off by Gordon Rattray. Rattray finished a good second behind Humm in the first heat and compiled enough points to take second overall. Richard Stubbs was Mr Consistent all day and earned a third place sash. The bike classes, ATVs and Motor Cross support Ellesmere well and make this Speedway track a little different from many others. ATVs handicap themselves for their racing starting the McGrath family juniors, Harry, Kane and Brent along with Taylor Graham off the front. These youngsters impress with their racing, mixing it up, holding good tight lines and make the seniors work to get around them. Daniel Cowie took out the no 1 spot with a first placing, second and fourth. Greg Graham was consistent to take second from the back marker Ian Ffitch who finished third. Revived again at Ellesmere is one of the original classes, the boys on two wheels. Former riders Scot McLean has taken Nic Korstanje under his wing and with the help of several others have made some changes to the infield track. They have developed a track competitive in nature for the top riders but very suitable
for any casual rider, many who are experiencing their first actual MX race at Ellesmere. B Grade rider Craig McLean earns a promotion with the B grade title from first time racer Josh Kerr and ‘Big Bird’ Bjorn Horrack who came home third. Horrack got some confidence as the meeting went on and was the only one of the B grade to jump the little triple jump on the far side. A Grade was full on with the team rep fighting it out with his brother Jason who has been helping with the track design and riding tips for some of the new boys. Jason was just too good for ‘Pies’ but Nic has come ahead since changing bikes and managed to head off Darcy Lutton. Lutton kept in contact to finish 3rd while Cody Ford and Hayden Cox are not too far off the pace of some of those in front of them. The next race meeting at the Ellesmere Raceway is the Combine Harvester Derby on the 13th October with all supporting classes racing prior to the derby. Reported to be the first time this type of event has been run in New Zealand.
