X-FACTOR RECOGNISES LOCAL TALENT
Tom Batchelor was born in Greymouth and at the age of 6 months together with his family, he moved to the Ellesmere district. He attended primary school at Leeston Consolidated and then went on to Ellesmere College where he graduated at the end of Year 13 in 2008. It was during his time at Ellesmere College that his passion and gift for music
kicked in. He was a very active person being involved in the Killinchy Tennis Club, and playing cricket for Southbridge, but it was during his time of playing rugby for the Southbridge Club that his love for music developed. At the age of 11 while playing rugby, he received two head injuries that kept him on the side-line, so to keep him active and occupied his mother bought him a guitar and from there, was to develop a love that has bought him to this point in his life. Once he graduated from Ellesmere College he moved to Invercargill to S.I.T to study music. He found that
sitting in class was not to be his forte and he preferred the practical side of music more. It was then off to Dunedin where he strived to make a living, busking and playing in bands. These times although very exciting to a ‘student type’ person was very difficult with money being quite scarce. This is what Tom now refers to as the ‘Gypsy’ phase in his life. He returned home in December 2012 and it was loosing a dare that bought him to enter the X-Factor. His mother describes him as a very laid back person ”What you see is what you get. If there were any pranks going on, you could
be sure that Tom would be in the midst of it all”. His older two siblings are thrilled to see Tom chasing his dream, and to be part of the events that are unfolding. To be involved in music full-time would be his ultimate dream.
He claims that he has meet so many wonderful people on the journey that he is now on and has been overwhelmed by the support that he has been given, especially by his local home community, he is so appreciative of it all, to know that so many people are behind him.

Pupils from Leeston School enjoyed a wonderful afternoon participating in their schools annual cross country event at the Ellesmere Show Grounds. After a cold and rainy week the weather held out on Friday 24 May.
The children did very well with some stiff competition between students. A big thank you to all the parents who helped out on the course, to staff and families for their support.
USE YOUR LIGHTS IN WINTER
Winter causes all sorts of problems with visibility when we are driving, including snow and ice, fog, rain and increased hours of darkness. The Road Code says that you must use your vehicle headlights, from 30 minutes after sunset, until 30 minutes before sun rise and at any other time you can’t clearly see a person or vehicle 100 metres away. “Most times it is very obvious when you need your lights on, but outside the guidelines given in the road code, there are a number of other circumstances where using your lights will increase your visibility and make it safer for you and other road users,” says Ngaire Tinning, Selwyn District Council’s Road Safety Coordinator. “When there is fog, it is raining or where there is the potential for sunstrike, it can be more difficult to see other vehicles. Using your lights on dip is the best way to ensure you are seen,” says Mrs Tinning. She says many people drive with their park lights but these are only designed for use when a vehicle is stationary and are not clearly visible from a distance. Increasing following distances and taking more care to check ahead before passing in these conditions is also essential as there may also be vehicles that do not have their lights on and are hard to see. Using your lights will greatly increase the chance of seeing and beingseen from 100 metresaway.

DAY TRIPPERS BUS UPDATE In July 2012 the Ellesmere Community Vehicle Trust was set up, and a 10 seater Toyota Hi Ace MiniBus was purchased in September 2012. There have been many interesting trips covering a large area of Canterbury, and the availability of this service in Ellesmere is much appreciated by a variety of groups and ages who have used the facility. We are very grateful for the time so freely given by the cheerful
volunteer drivers. The convenience of the Minibus makes travel for groups a lot easier and more fun, whether it be to garden visits, birthday celebrations, movies, concerts and even to the night trots. Some trips have included Waimate, Methven, Darfield, Oxford, Pegasus, and Sumner. The Minibus is not completely funded yet, and we are grateful for grants received, local clubs, private
donations and fundraising towards the purchase of the vehicle. Safety steps and rails have been installed for easier access. A big “THANK YOU” to the sponsors of our recently held Dinner/Auction held at the Leeston Bowling Club, which was a wonderful success. Which ever way you helped, we are truly grateful. Thank you again for your support towards this service in Ellesmere. Remember, this community

POPPITA’S CAFÉ TO BECOME A PIZZERIA On the 6th of July Poppita’s will be undergoing a transformation. Every Friday and Saturday night Poppita’s will be offering a range of traditional pizzas, for dine in or take-away. The pizza bases will be hand stretched and hand made, and the meat will be sourced from a local butcher. Café owners Bianca and Scott Woyak said “We are excited to be expanding into pizza. We were sick of there
being no where to go out for dinner on a Friday and Saturday night, so we decided to open Poppita’s at night as a pizzeria.” Poppita’s, already known for its seriously good coffee, has also applied for a BYO liquor license. A WORLD FIRST FOR CANTERBURY What is translucent, floats in the stratosphere and communicates with red bubbles? Project Loon of course. Project Loon is a new Google initiative that aims to bring internet to the two thirds of the worlds population that are not currently connected. Canterbury was the first place in the world to trial the system whereby many large solar powered balloons are launched into the upper stratosphere. These balloons form a network capable of providing internet to those on the ground with special red bulbous antennas. Local man Charles Nimmo and his family were selected to be the first in the world to use the network due to their rural location and historically unreliable internet. “The whole process was very secretive.” explained Charles. “We were only given full details of the initiative the night before the test.” The agricultural sector represents 75% of New Zealand export earnings and currently tolerates unreliable, expensive or non existent internet. For that reason the rural sector could do with as many ‘Loons’ as possible.

PASSION AND DREAMS BECOME A BUSINESS Growing up in Southbridge, Simon’s childhood was spent as he now spends his adult life … with a huge involvement in the trout, salmon and duck shooting opportunities around our district! His ability to share his extensive salt and freshwater fishing knowledge gained in NZ and overseas, with authority and enthusiasm is appreciated by his customers. Simon is also an accomplished trap shooter with involvement at committee level in the local Ellesmere Gun Club. In more recent times his hunting enthusiasm has spread to bigger game with deer and tahr being the main target. Simon entered the retail sporting industry as a young school leaver. Driven by passion, commitment and the desire to succeed, this career path progressed, and in 2008, along with wife Vicki, and Gwynn & Pauline Thomson they purchased the Hamills Christchurch store. With Gwynn’s business experience and Simon’s industry knowledge this seemed a perfect combination for a prosperous venture. Early this year the decision was made to take up an
offer to join Hunting & Fishing New Zealand and the 1st of March saw the official name change to Christchurch City Hunting & Fishing. This decision was not made lightly, but by doing so will enable Simon, Gwynn and their team to provide a superior selection plus better value for the customer. Centrally located at 575 Colombo Street, the team have gained a huge and loyal following from city dwellers and locals alike, and also plenty of tourists. This loyalty did not waiver right through the earthquake disruptions even with the store being closed for a total of ten weeks post February 2011. Simon has recognised that he gets plenty of support from the
local community and is more than happy to bring products out to his Leeston home if required, a service not often found elsewhere. Staff and service – The team hasn’t changed! Led by Simon, the experienced staff are some of Canterbury’s most respected anglers, hunters, target shooters and outdoor enthusiasts. Community Cnetres & Halls Strategic Plan Adopted A new plan has been adopted by the Council to guide the future of community centres and halls in Selwyn District. The plan recognises that these facilities are very important to communities but that some change is required to ensure they continue to be well used and valued by the district’s communities. The views of hall committees and the public about how they see facilities being used and managed in the future have helped to develop the plan. The Council’s Manager of Open Space and Property, Mark Rykers, says that a number of community centres and halls in the district will be upgraded or replaced within the next few years. “The Council is currently working with, or planning to work with, communities in Dunsandel, West Melton, Hororata, Greenpark, Lakeside and Tai Tapu to look at the options around developing new community facilities which suit the needs of these communities. In a number of cases this is the result of damage to facilities in the earthquake events.” The plan also identifies the need for community facilities to receive additional support and to work more closely together. “The plan encourages community committees managing facilities to work together more closely in the future and to share resources. The Council will also provide additional expertise and advice to support committees,” says Mr Rykers. The targeted rates system for funding community centres and halls will continue but the plan signals the need for the Council to look at other funding approaches to ensure the right mix is provided. Any proposals to alter funding would be consulted on as part of future Annual or Long Term Plans. “There are no plans to close

existing facilities but where usage continues to decline and major capital investment is needed to upgrade them we will work with communities to look at future options. This will include looking at whether
upgrading or a new facility is required or if the facility is still needed. Ultimately it will be up to communities to decide what they want for their area and what kind of facility they want to fund,” says Mr Rykers.

SELWYN AQUATIC CENTRE OPENING DATE The Selwyn Aquatic Centre will open to the public on Monday 24 June. The new centre was officially blessed on Wednesday 29 May. Sponsors were officially welcomed to the new facility by Mayor Kelvin Coe and Selwyn MP Amy Adams at an event on Friday 31 May. The 2,800 square metre facility features an eightlane 25 metre pool, a hydrotherapy pool with spa area, a learn-to-swim pool and a leisure pool with a lazy river. The four main pools have walk in access to ensure they are accessible to everyone. A disability hoist will also be installed beside the spa pool so anyone can use this. The centre includes an air to air heat recovery system which recovers heat off exhaust air to heat fresh air. This provides the centre with better air quality and makes it more energy efficient. A floating screed floor is used in the centre. This type of floor is common in Europe but rare in New Zealand. This reduces energy costs by minimising the amount of heat lost into the ground. Speaking at the event to thank sponsors on 31 May, Mayor Kelvin Coe said that
Selwyn residents could be very proud of the new complex which is able to be used by people of all ages and from all parts of the district. “There is a strong demand for a year round aquatic facility. We know this because we received over 1,400 enrolments for our new swim school before the facility was even ready to open.” He says the construction of the new pool complex is part of a wider Aquatic Strategy for the District which has seen the Council provide more financial and technical support to community pools. $1.4 million has been raised so far in towards the cost of the facility through fundraising. The Mayor thanked the Lottery Grants Board, the Southern Trust, the Canterbury Community Trust and the many individuals and businesses who had helped with the fundraising. Around 300 tiles painted by the community as part of the fundraising effort are displayed at the centre on the corridor between the changing area and the pools. The pool was designed by Warren and Mahoney, constructed by Naylor Love Construction and the development of the complex
project managed by Davis Langdon. The centre will employ around 50 staff in full time and part time roles which include swim coaches, lifeguards, aquafitness instructors and administration and pool maintenance roles. Over the coming weeks staff will be trained in their roles, while the finishing touches are put on the new facility before it opens to the public on 24 June. A SLIGHT CHANGE IN HOURS FOR BNZ LEESTON
The Bank of New Zealand is making a slight change to its opening hours in Leeston from next month to concentrate on the busier times of the day. The Leeston store will open from 9am to 4.30pm on Mondays to Fridays from July 1, 2013, instead of the current 5pm closing each day, Store Manager Robyn Casey says. On Saturdays BNZ Leeston will continue to open from 9am to 12pm.
“We’ve revisited our opening hours in Leeston because ordinarily we are serving an average of only one customer at the end of the day,” Robyn Casey says. “From Monday July 1 we will close half an hour earlier each day at 4.30pm,” she says. “Bank of New Zealand is proud to serve the Leeston community and is committed to the town.”

RD1 - COMING TO LEESTON Work is underway on the new RD1 Leeston Store being built on the old Leeston Hotel site, cnr of Market and High Streets. RD1 South Island Operations Manager, Craig Rodgers, says the new store is part of the company’s planned expansion to better support the fast growing dairy industry in the area. “We’ve been working to cover the area from our RD1 Rakaia store in the past but, with a growing customer base and ever expanding dairy industry, we can see we do need to be in the town to give our customers the level of service that is required.” He says the current RD1 Technical Sales Representative (TSR), Deanna Pittaway, will continue to provide support and advice to customers and now, with the added benefit of the store,
Craig says RD1 can offer the full service needed in the Leeston area. At 635sqm, with an additional 260sqm enclosed drive through/loading area, the purpose built store will enable a wider range and number of in-store supplies and plenty of room to make shopping a customer, friendly experience. “The new store will make for an enjoyable shopping experience plus our new yard and bulk store has also been designed so customers can get in and out quickly. Having somewhere to park and load goods will make life easy for staff and customers.” Craig says the closed canopy over the loading area will cut down on heat loss while ensuring staff and customers are protected during cold, wet conditions. “Heating and lighting costs
make up a significant part of the costs associated with operating the store, so it’s great to be able to take advantage of the latest technology to keep energy use and costs to a minimum. “The store also has included several environmental features that will save power while ensuring staff and customers are not adversely affected. Clear-lite panels in the roof will ensure maximum use of natural light while a switch lighting system, with built in sensors, will detect when lighting is needed or not needed and will turn lighting on/off as required.” He says at this point in time the store is on track to open late Spring and the RD1 team look forward to becoming part of the Leeston retail landscape.

Youth basket ball has started up again for its second season. From 5pm until 6pm on a Monday night at the Station in Leeston you will find budding basketball players learning the basics. This year has seen many return from last year and lots of new faces from aged 7 up to 13. The kids are coached by Andrew Legg and Lyndon Sutherland. Parents are welcome to stay and get out on the court and help, or have a cuppa or they can just drop off and collect at the end. Located in Rakaia on Railway Terrace West is a small crafters delight. Julie Brown and Kelly Stewart have built up a small shop full of pretty quilting fabrics, cross stitiches and much more. IMPROVED MOBILE COVERAGE AND BROADBAND OPTIONS FOR SELWYN The Government’s Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) is now delivering improved cell phone coverage and wireless broadband options to Selwyn residents, according to local MP Amy Adams. Ms Adams, who is also the Minister for Communications and Information Technology, stated that Vodafone has this week commissioned a new cell site in Glentunnel – one of six new RBI sites in the Selwyn District. “Along with Glentunnel, towers have already been built at Springfield and Southbridge and new towers are also planned for West Melton, Castle Hill and Bankside,” Ms Adams said. “Jointly these sites will provide new mobile coverage and wireless broadband for over 3,900 homes and businesses.” Vodafone is also upgrading ten of its existing sites in Selwyn to deliver the wireless broadband service to rural residents, with six of these upgrades already complete. Ms Adams said that improved access to reliable cell phone and internet services would bring huge benefits to rural communities. “As a rural resident myself, I know how important it is to have reliable communications to deal with emer-
gency situations and also to support the day-to-day running of rural businesses,” Ms Adams said. The new tower at Glentunnel is able to provide over 700 households in the area with mobile coverage and wireless broadband via a high performance modem. Phone calls can also be made through this service by plugging an existing landline phone directly into the modem, removing the need for a landline connection. Customers can port their existing landline number to this new service. Customers can find out if this service will be available at their address by checking online at www.vodafone.co.nz/ruralbroadband. Background: Under the five year RBI plan, Vodafone will upgrade 387 existing cell towers and build a further 154 new towers in rural areas all over New Zealand. The government is funding the civil construction costs of these new sites which are designed to accommodate Vodafone equipment and that of other mobile and wireless operators.

ELLESMERE COLLEGE RUGBY UPDATE The rugby season is now well underway with 4 Ellesmere College teams competing in town competitions. To date the Ellesmere College First XV are unbeaten and sitting in first position on the table in the Wednesday afternoon town competition. The team had a convincing 47-12 win over the Catholic Cathedral College at Waltham Park in their first game of the season, overcoming a big forward pack with some discipline and structured play. Our second round match was the first home game for our team this season against a promising Burnside team. a 49-12 victory. Last week the team travelled to Kaiapoi High School for their third round game, coming up against a determined home side. The Ellesmere forward pack wore down their opposition to take a commanding 31-8 lead late in the second half, only to let their foot off the pedal for Kaiapoi to run in 3 late tries, with Ellesmere holding on for an uncomfortably close 31-27 victory. The team sits on maximum points, first equal with St Thomas College at this stage of the competition. The team has an upcoming Quad tournament on Wednesday 19th June in Geraldine, then takes on Middleton Grange at Ellesmere College on June 26th at 3.00pm. The Girls ten a side team, coached by Mrs Grooby, has made big improvements already this season. After a convincing loss to Linwood College first up, the team had a promising 41-5 win on the school field over Riccarton High School. There are several young players in this side and the future looks bright for this team as they continue to develop into a promising side. The girls take on Rangi Ruru at Hagley Park on the 19th of June and then host Catholic Cathedral College at Ellesmere on June 26th. The Year 9 and 10 boys rugby team, under the tutelage of Mr Stacey, has played one game to date, with a closely fought 24-10 loss to Rangiora. Although pushed for playing numbers, this team has a strong core of Year 10 boys who are beginning to show real promise as rugby players, which is good for the future of rugby at the College. The team is playing a combined
Area Schools side on the 19th of June at Kaiapoi and then taking on Hornby in town on June 26th. The Year 7 and 8 team this year are coached by parents Brendon Barns, Gary Michaels, and Nathan Currie. There has been huge interest from students in this team, with a strong squad of players representing the school on Thursday afternoons in the Canterbury Primary Sports Competition at Hagley Park. This side is unbeaten at present, with the team recording two comprehensive wins against Kaiapoi Borough School and Darfield High School. This is a pleasing start with a high level of commitment shown by both the players and the coaching team, pointing towards a positive season ahead. Thanks to all the coaches, managers and supporters who have given their time to help out our College Rugby teams to date. Your support and encouragement is greatly appreciated.

THREATS AND PROMISES Another parliamentary election will be held in 2014. Next year, and it seems only very recently that we had the last election. The frequency of elections really raises the question about whether a government’s policies can be tested properly during any term of government.
