Racing to success, Isaac Proud of Waddington. On Thursday, May 23rd, a group of very keen runners from Darfield High School competed in the Canterbury Secondary S ch oo ls ’ Ro a d R a c e Championships. Several other DHS students also gained excellent placings in their categories.

...Continued from front page. The 3000m road race was held at Hagley Park and following his success in the event, Isaac went on to achieve another third in the Canterbury 3000m cross country race held at Halswell Quarry, the following week. “Isaac, from Waddington, is a fine example of what a thirteen year old boy can achieve when he has an active, healthy lifestyle and a positive attitude,” said Isaac’s Dad, Geoff. Geoff “With his fellow competitors taking part in rigorous training programmes, Isaac achieves very well, as he doesn't train, he just gets out and does it on the day,” Geoff commented. Isaac has a number of successes under his belt,
including: a first in Canterbury duathalon; fourth in Canterbury cross country; represented Malvern in the New Zealand triathlon; and represented Canterbury in the regional cross country champs held in Wellington, where he came home with a bronze medal and was instrumental in helping the Canterbury team achieve first equal placing (achieved in the
last lap of the last race). Outside of school Isaac is the Malvern Junior B squash champion, is a regular winner of grass go kart racing in the Canterbury Club, and enjoys mountain biking when he gets the chance. Well done Isaac! “The moral of this story could well be - 'don't own a Play Station’,” Geoff concluded!
The Selwyn Disability Support Group has a new initiative - named Selwyn Launchpad. This has been set up to support youth between the ages of sixteen and thirty years of age, in the Selwyn District. The Support Group committee have collated data on those young people who have registered with Selwyn Launchpad, to establish their needs; whether that be employment opportunities, social activities, or further educational and recreational activities. Anyone interested in hearing more about Selwyn Launchpad, or able to assist as a business, employer, or member of the public, then organisers would be delighted to make contact. It was a great day, and lots of fun for the students who attended. They were greatly impressed by the guests involved and learnt about how leadership is important in the world. Some messages of inspiration that Darfield Primary students picked up on were: • Never give up • Believe in yourself • Don’t let others tell you that you can’t achieve
Gaming

Disability does not mean you can’t reach your goals • You learn from failure • With teamwork you can do anything • Always do your best • Leaders should work with their team not above or against. Amongst the guest speakers were Sophie Pascoe, Pascoe Jason Gunn, Gunn Christian Gallen, Gallen Sam Johnson, Johnson Cam Calkoen, Calkoen and pupils were entertained by singer Jamie McDowell. •
An additional highlight for the students was meeting the guests and getting autographs at the day’s end. Those attending had an awesome experience and would definitely recommend it for the Year 6’s of next year.

On a Friday at the beginning of May the scene was set for a disco in the Nursery at Annabel’s Educare, Darfield. The windows were blacked out, flashing disco lights hung around the walls and balloons hung low from the ceiling. Children from the over two year old unit were also invited to join the Nursery for the Educare Disco party. Staff and children dressed up for the occasion with wigs and spiky hairdos, as well as their best dancing skirts and shirts! Far from being perturbed at their changed environment, the Nursery children displayed lots of confidence at the event. Many of the children have shown an interest in music and movement and so the disco was planed to celebrate and extend this interest. Children enjoyed moving to the music - developing coordination, balance and increasing control over their bodies.

The Selwyn Aquatic Centre will open to the public on Monday, June 24th The new centre was officially blessed on Wednesday, May 29th. Sponsors were officially welcomed to the new facility by Mayor Kelvin Coe and Selwyn MP Amy Adams at an event on Friday, May 31st. The 2,800 square metre facility features an eight-lane 25 metre pool, a hydrotherapy pool with spa area, a learn-to-swim pool and a leisure pool with a lazy river. The four main pools have walk in access to ensure they are accessible to everyone. A disability hoist will also be installed beside the spa pool so anyone can use this. The centre includes an air to air heat recovery system which recovers heat off exhaust air to heat fresh air. This provides the centre with better air quality and makes it more energy efficient. A floating screed floor is used in the centre. This type of floor is common in Europe but rare in New Zealand. This
reduces energy costs by minimising the amount of heat lost into the ground. Speaking at the event to thank sponsors on May 31st, Mayor Kelvin Coe said that Selwyn residents could be very proud of the new complex which is able to be used by people of all ages and from all parts of the district. “There is a strong demand for a year round aquatic facility. We know this because we received over 1,400 enrolments for our new swim school before the facility was even ready to open.” He says the construction of the new pool complex is part of a wider Aquatic Strategy for the District which has seen the Council provide more financial and technical support to community pools. $1.4 million has been raised so far in towards the cost of the facility through fundraising. The Mayor thanked the Lottery Grants Board, the Southern Tr u s t, th e C an t er b u r y Community Trust and the many individuals and businesses who h ad h el p ed w i th th e fundraising. Around 300 tiles

The pool was designed by W ar r en an d M ah o n ey, constructed by Naylor Love Co n s tr u c ti o n an d th e development of the complex project managed by Davis Langdon. The centre will employ around fifty staff in full time and part time roles which include swim coaches, lifeguards, aquafitness instructors and administration and pool maintenance roles. Over the coming weeks staff will be trained in their roles, while the finishing touches are put on the new facility before it opens to the public on June 24th.

The workshop will be run by Inspiring Stories Trust. Some of New Zealand’s best awardwinning young filmmakers will share their skills to help students develop confidence in story, camera, editing and creative process, and to support them in exploring twenty first century issues that affect their future, brainst orm sol utio ns, an d connect with local people making a difference. Students will have several outlets for their voices. Inspiring Stories Trust will celebrate workshop outcomes by using the media (photos and footage) for online and print publication. The Trust also runs a film competition. In addition, WET has added a
special video section for young people to its public art exhibition Te Waihora/Lake Ellesm ere Expressions of the Living Lake to be held at the WET Living Lake Symposium at Lincoln University in November this year. Ann Worthy Stephenson is a Kaiapoi based photographer with one already successful, fundraising, photographic book under her belt. Her first, a coffee-table photography book, involving 128 children, raised $3,500 in 2010 for the ‘Make A Wish Foundation’. Ann’s second book, is another in the, ‘Kids of Canterbury’ series which is about kids having fun all over the province. It will also serve to fund-raise for Cholmondeley respite care and education centre for children.* Ann, an international award winning photographer, began with underwater photography, but over the years this has evolved and expanded to people, especially children. Ann loves photographing children and families and her studio is set up for creating all sorts of fantasy photos such as fairies, pirates, fishing, super-heroes etc. The second ‘Kids of Canterbury’ will be a stunning photography book of kids having fun from Kaikou ra to Timaru , Christchurch to Tekapo. The book creates a collection of memories of what children are doing for fun in 2013. Any child aged thirteen or under can be in
the book and Ann undertakes all the photography and book/page design. From the $125 family session fee, $50 is donated to Cholmondeley, along with another $5 from each book sale (each family is to purchase a minimum of one copy). At least one photograph of each child is included in the book. Families can also purchase prints and canvases of the photos too wonderful gifts (books will be available for Christmas), or to hang on the wall. Photographing for this new book is currently underway see advertisement in this issue for contact details and how to
be involved. *Cholmondeley, based in Governors Bay, provides shortterm and emergency respite care for children aged three to twelve years (however while currently based at Living Springs, it’s five to twelve years), with the aim of alleviating immediate family pressures. Pressures which exist for children and their parents when the usual supports are not enough or not available. They have cared for more than 25,000 children over 87 years and have an undying commitment to the value of today's children.

What we do
Who are we The Malvern Community Board is elected in the same way that Councillors are, under the Local Government Act. The Board consists of three members from the Hawkins Ward and Two members for the Tawera Ward The Community Board is not a Committee of Council but stands independently of the Council. It can and does put before the Council issues that it feels the Council should be taking into account when Council decisions are being made - especially if decisions being made are in relation to the Malvern Ward. The Council can, and does delegate to the Board specific functions of Council. Currently these are representation on Townships, Halls, Reserves, Water Supplies and Swimming Pools Committees. The Board members who attend these meetings are therefore the official representatives of the Council and as such are full members of the specific committee. Board members also sit on Committees of Council which have a direct relation to the Malvern Ward area - Reserve
Contribution Committees, Westview Park Committee, Malvern Medical Centre Committee, Darfield Water Supply Sub-committee and Sister Cities Committee. Members also sit on Community Committees that are not Council related such as the Glentunnel Museum Committee, Haunui Trust and Malvern Community Arts Council.
• Represent and act as advocates for the interests of the community; • Consider and report on all matters referred to the Board by the Council, or on any matter of interest or concern to the Community Board; • Maintain an overview of services provided by the Council within the community; • Prepare an annual submission to the Council’s Annual Plans regarding expenditure within the community; • Communicate with community organisations and special interest groups within the community; • Undertake any other responsibilities that are delegated to it by the Council.

Darfield Medical Centre Successive Malvern Community Boards have been involved in negotiating the new Darfield Medical Centre building. Some time ago, the Board realised that the current building was not adequate for the needs of the community and so began working towards a new medical centre. The current medical centre building was funded by a rate take from the Malvern Community and as such, responsibility was delegated to the Board. It was a long journey with many stops and starts - but - now as can be seen, the new building is nearing completion.
Westview Development This parcel of land was purchased several years ago from the Railways Corporation by the Darfield Community Board (since changed to the Malvern Community Board) on behalf of the people of Darfield. The purchase was funded by sales of a residential subdivision on North Terrace. A recreation Reserve, Westview, was developed on South Terrace and a portion was to be sold as commercial land. This land has now been sold to Taeco and a new Four Square Supermarket is to be built. The result of this has produced funds which are to be used towards enhancements and projects for Darfield. There will be a public meeting in the future in relation to the best use of funds generated from the sale of commercial land.

• • Sister City Relationship The Board has a friendship Sister City relationship with Yubetsu in Japan. The Darfield High School also has a relationship with Yubetsu and often the two join in progressing this relationship.
McHughs Plantation This has now been secured by the Council for the whole of the District. There is a target rate which will enable the purchase and development of this most wonderful asset. There will need to be input from the community on how this plantation is to be developed in order to ensure the best overall result.
One-Stop-Shop The Board has been working with staff, Health and Social Service providers in order that Malvern residents do not have to go to Christchurch to access such services. Representatives from the Ministry of Social Welfare have visited Darfield during the year in relation to

Paddy McKay and John Morten - our community minded leaders - or dictators? You decide. We live in Cardale Street, in the ‘Old Convent’; one of the oldest buildings in Darfield and built in 1899 for the Sisters of Mercy. It has been our home for fourteen years. Currently the intersection between the convent and the Catholic Church on Telegraph Road, is under modification, to straighten the road. A few weeks into the road work s we u ps e t t in gly discovered, that the walkway bridge crossing the water race from our property’s gate to the Church, had been removed. This was without notification to us, as users of the bridge, the Catholic community or the Darfield Community Committee. No this decision was made by our community spokesperson, Paddy McKay and councillor, John Morten. The Selwyn Council advised that they had received a claim by Paddy and John that the bridge was ‘unsafe’ and needed to be removed. We feel this to be untrue as the bridge was built with telegraph poles and railway irons and was very strongly constructed, as they were in that era. No engineer or building inspector had been invited to verify the ‘unsafe’ claims. If we had been given any consideration, we would have put right any issues found with the bridge, of which we believe there were none. The Council showed no plans
to remove the walkway bridge in their roading modifications. The bridge has a huge historical value, it was the link between the two buildings (Convent and Church) and purpose built for the decades of nuns and visitors to both. Up until this awful day our family used it weekly to attend Church, its value ignored by two men too arrogant to let the c ommun ity v oic e t he ir opinions . It was never brought up at any community meetings, why not? You may be interested to know the whereabouts of the ill-fated bridge. On the Council scrapheap? Not at all, it’s in Paddy McKay’s backyard! We want the bridge reinstated, and not at any cost to the Darfield community, its history is pa ra moun t t o t he surrounding buildings and township. Both John Morten and Paddy McKay have overstepped their positions in the community and we will not sit back and be bullied by them. We would certainly value any support the community can offer us.

To the person(s) who killed our dog on Thursday, May 30th, outside our house on Bleakhouse Road (Racecourse Hill), shame on you! You were going too fast for a metal road (well it hasn't been graded for a while) and you did not stop and let us know. The accident was totally unnecessary as the road is plenty wide enough to have avoided him. We have lost a beloved pet and we have a distressed Miss Twelve who has lost her BFF of ten years. To the Leech Drainage driver who stopped and spoke to us, thank you and to the couple who also stopped but spoke to our neighbours, thank you too - it is appreciated. There are plenty of other animals that live on this road plus horses that trek along it, as well as children - who will be next? Slow down!

Visit www.73hire.co.nz Arbor Day was Wednesday June 5th and to celebrate that fact, Canterbury-based arborist companies and volunteers spent a day recently helping to maintain the Hart Arboretum in Lake Coleridge Village. The arboretum contains one of New Zealand’s best mature conifer collections. Most of the trees were planted by Harry Hart who was Superintendent at the Lake Coleridge Power Station from 1924 to 1954. Coordinator of the day, Chris Young from the New Zealand Horticulture Industry Training O r g an i s ati o n ( N Z H I TO ) , commented that arborists can make an important contribution to Arbor Day with their specialist skills. “Arbor Day is often associated with planting new trees, but the maintenance of established collections of trees is just as important," Chris said. "There are some rare conifer species in the Hart Arboretum making it a special resource for scientific study and seed collection.” he added. The pruning day, which has also been run in the past, was again
made possible with the help of Transfield Services, which pro vid ed arbo ris ts f rom Christchurch and Timaru. Volunteers from the Canterbury
Central Plains Water Ltd (CPWL) has signed an his tor ic agreement with TrustPower to store water in Lake Coleridge for use by its shareholders when the Rakaia River flow is low. Doug Catherwood, Catherwood chair of CPWL, in announcing the agreement said he was unaware of any other storage facility offering to release contracted water on demand in New Zealand. “We have to book the volume a year in advance but TrustPower will release it with about a day’s notice,” he said. The agreement follows months of discussion and has been m ad e pos si bl e b y th e Government’s decision to alter the Conservation Order covering the river and lake. “This is another big step forward for us. Lake Coleridge is an existing reservoir, and at this early stage the Coleridge
Storage will support Stage One at least, of the CPW Scheme, which involves water supply to 20,000 hectares of farming land,” Doug said. “TrustPower would provide 95% reliability for the scheme for Stage One,” he said. “Before the agreement was signed, CPW was able to offer only 70% reliability with the run of river supply.” “This is good news for us. Ninety-five per cent reliability is virtually water every day for farmers. This is a real alternative to our own water storage reservoir.” There is potential for more stored water to be available for future stages of the CPWL Scheme. “Research will need to be conducted before we can be assured on the reliability of the next tranche of water. We now know the reliability will be considerable and well worth

pursuing. This will constitute the next phase of our discussions.” Doug said having reliable alpine water was key for the viability of CPWL. The positive impact meant that current ground water users who are pumping from up to two hundred metres would switch to surface water, releasing the pressure on the over allocated ground water usage, enabling the aquifers to be replenished and increase the environmental flows in the lowland streams. “As our construction proceeds over the next couple of years, we will provide equal reliability for the coming stages of the CPW, without compromising environmental concerns for the river and the lake.” The first stage of the irrigation scheme will run from near the Rakaia River bridge to near the Hororata River. It will be worth approximately $144 million.

Te Anau farmers Chris, Chris Jayne (nee Richards) Richards and Henry Douglas recently sold a polled Hereford bull for $71,000, a price they believe was a South Island record. The owners sold the bull, named Monymusk Gallant, at their onfarm sale, near Te Anau. The bull was reared on the 1400 acre beef and sheep property, of which the Monymusk Stud is a major part. The rising two year old bull was purchased by a syndicate of four - Wes thol me S tud (Tapanui), Grassmere Stud (Cheviot), Duncraigen Stud (Wyndham) and Matariki Stud (Kaikoura). The Douglases said it was the highest price the trio had ever received for a bull. They believed it was a South Island record and, as far as they are aware, the second highest for New Zealand. The bull was incredibly wellmuscled and had excellent
breed plan figures, which meant its genetic traits would produce high quality offspring. Another of their bulls sold for $23,000 and the average for the sale was $8,3000. The Douglases celebrated twenty five years of selling bulls
in Southland last year and it will be fifty years for the Monymusk Stud in 2014. “The sale was a great day for the family who have a real passion for this industry,” reported Jayne’s sister Nicky Muir of Glenroy.

Despite being Queen’s Birthday weekend the Darfield netball courts were a busy place to be, last Saturday. Adding to the usual delights on offer from the barbeque, Springfield/Sheffield Netball Club also held a cake stall. The Future Ferns are now well underway with their skills sessions, starting Saturday mornings off with many smiles and lots of energy. A big change
for them is the decision by Malvern Netball to ensure they all get to play a game each week. With five being an odd number of teams, it has been traditional for one team to have a bye. Last week, instead of having a week off, the Darfield Rebels got to play a fun game against substitutes from all the other teams. The shortage of smaller goal posts was successfully solved by parents

holding up buckets. Judging by the obvious fun being had by all, the experiment seems to have been a huge success. One group of unsung heroes who make Saturday mornings work so well, are the Bench Officials. These people, often press-ganged parents or friends, time-keep and record the score. In order to ensure everyone is doing things the same, Melissa George facilitated s ever al B en ch O f f i ci al s Workshops over two weekends. They were very well attended by the majority of teams. Selwyn District Council provides contributory funding at a ward level to support groups and individuals whose projects contribute to the strengthening of community wellbeing in Selwyn. By developing and enriching themselves, individuals in turn can contribute to community wellbeing through, for example, representing the district (e.g. at Canterbury, national or international competitions), volunteering and later, as adults, contributing to Selwyn in a variety of ways (e.g. sports coaching). These funds are dispersed by the Malvern Community Board (for the Malvern ward) the Selwyn Central Community Board) (for Selwyn Central) and Springs/Ellesmere councilors (for the Springs and Ellesmere wards), with research and advice on each application provided by Council staff. Do you know anyone who may benefit from this funding?
