Making its debut from June 19th until June 22nd, the Christchurch Art Show is the South Island’s new premiere, annual, art sales event, and entries are now open for creative talent to be a part of it. This event is a stellar opportunity for new, emerging and established artists to showcase and sell their works in a four day art extravaganza, based in the new Events’ Centre at the Wigram Air Force Museum. “The Christchurch Art Show offers selected artists an affordable platform to sell their works to a wide range of people,” said the show’s two directors Hannah Buckby and Kate Morrison. The pair formed the idea of hosting the large art event in the South Island to promote Christchurch as a positive arts destination and to provide more hanging space for local artists. They are expecting close to 10,000 people to come through the Air Force museum over the four days and have committed to an annual event as they believe this will give artists an ongoing opportunity to develop and grow their works. “Art is priced to sell from $50 to $5,000, which is an affordable market for everyone

February Meeting The Malvern Community Board held their first meeting for the year on Monday, February 3rd. The main item discussed was the Car Parking at the Medical Centre. The Board has been working with staff to make some changes to the existing carparking, to ensure that it is safe. Plans and budgets had been presented at the previous meeting. The Draft Annual Budget is under way and Board Members have a list of the current projects relating to Malvern. This will be checked to see which projects have been carried out and which projects still need to be completed. The Springfield toilet project has unfortunately met with some delays, but staff are still working towards getting these completed. The members for the Malvern

Hills and Hororata Acheron Water Supplies were ratified. Over the last few months Board members have been attending the Triennial Meetings of Township Halls and Reserves in the Malvern area, for which they h a ve C o u n c i l d e l e g a t e d responsibility. It is a little disappointing to see the lack of public attendance at these m e e t i n g s ; h o we v e r t h e committees which have been formed for the next three years, are excellent. The Board and the Communities which they represent can be well pleased with these people who continue to work for their communities. The next meeting of the Malvern community Board is to be held at Hororata on Monday, February 24th .

L-R: Carol Attewell, Wendy Musgrave, Sally Banks, Ally Jones and Sharon Morrison with their glorious creations, which are now on display at Val Briggs’ showroom. Val Briggs (owner of Val Briggs interiors) set her staff a fun Christmas holiday challenge. The five staff were given a mixed bag of bits and pieces from the workroom and asked if they could employ their creativity and make something out of them. The plan being to ‘judge’ the creations upon the return to work in the New Year. The results and the response was truly amazing, and customers, along with members

of the public, cast an eye over the offerings giving their comments and votes for a favourite. Sharon Morrison’s millinery skills impressed and she was announced as the eventual winner. The wonderful creations can be seen on display in the window of Val Briggs, South Terrace, Darfield and are definitely well worth a look.

The business hub initiative facilitated and organised by Sterling Accountants (who have a monthly presence in Darfield - see the advertisement in this issue) is going from strength to strength. Held before the business day gets fully underway for most, and taking place at the Terrace Winebar and Restaurant, it’s an opportunity for business owners to network in partnership on the commercial growth of the district. While many will have will have been invited to the monthly event since it began in October last year, those with businesses in the Malvern area are always welcome to join the group, all that’s needed is an email to Sterling Accountants, so they can get an idea of numbers.

Ann Maree Ozanne, Ozanne Director of Sterling Accountants, commented that the group has a purpose to “support, encourage and promote businesses locally; not replicate any other groups in the area and not be a committee but rather a collaborative group of like-minded businesses. It’s an opportunity to identify, create and bring about business opportunities, build new business relationships, exchange ideas, business skills and support.” The group focuses on how businesses can work together and assist each other. The business hub hears a monthly update on what’s happening locally from members of the group, discusses any impact to the b u s i n e s s c om m un i t y an d opportunities for growth.

The relaxed, friendly format for the forthcoming meeting (Wednesday, February 19th) starts with a question for the day, “who is your target market and where does your business come from?” It will also discuss ideas for a group name and an update on events and issues in the wider Malvern Community. Recent meetings have discussed local business issues such as parking in the township and working with the Darfield Township Committee to share information and ideas on a regular basis. The Darfield Township Com m ittee has been very supportive of the business hub initiative and it is envisaged that regular updates between the two will bring positive results for the area.

Mike and Robyn Macklin formed ElectriSafe NZ in 2013. The company’s distinctive vehicle will no doubt already be known to many around the district as they carry out work not previously, easily accessible, in the area. The couple, who have three adul t chi ldr en and two grandchildren, mo ved to Darfield seven years ago from Christchurch. “We love living in Darfield and believe the community offers a good lifestyle balance with great facilities and people,” Robyn commented. “We enjoy working locally and know that the services ElectriSafe can offer will add to safety and peace of mind for the community.” Both Mike and Robyn are actively involved in the business, with Mike having gained his Electrician’s registration a number of years ago, before joining the Police service. While working as a sergeant in numerous stations throughout New Zealand, he maintained his electrical registration at all times. In 1995, having just left the Police service, Mike took up

Robyn and Mike Macklin of ElectriSafe NZ employment as a commercial manager for Caltex before returning to the electrical industry in 2001 and working in low and medium switchgear sales and manufacturing. He has now gained qualifications as an electrical inspector, is a member of the NZ Electrical Registration Board and a member of ECANZ. Robyn is a nurse by ‘trade’, having worked locally as a District Nurse and also for the New Zealand Blood Service as a Donor Nurse. She is currently training as a technician to en able h er to work independently as a PAT (Portable Appliance Tester) and also manages the administration for ElectriSafe. Mike’s experience in the electrical industry as an Electrician and more recently as an Electrical Inspector helped him identify a need for

i n d ep en d en t E l e c tr i c a l Inspection Services focussing on the rural community. ElectriSafe is proud to be based in Darfield, but is also available to service all areas throughout New Zealand. “Our focus is really on making electrical safety, compliance and auditing easy for electricians, business owners and home owners,” Mike and Robyn stressed. “We offer peace of mind and compliance.” For electricians ElectriSafe is avail able for ad vi ce on compliance and inspection services and for business owners, schools, rest homes, medical rooms and employers, ElectriSafe offers the electrical testing required to meet their current Health and Safety at work obligations. See advertisement in the trades section for ElectriSafe contact details.

Glentunnel School is one of the first schools in the area to be connected to the N4L fibre managed network. The government created Network for Learning (N4L) to build a managed network specifically designed for New Zealand’s 2,500+ schools and create an environment that encourages the uptake of digital learning in a seamless way. This managed network will ensure all schools have equitable access to safe, predictable and fast internet with uncapped data, as well as high quality teaching and learning resources. Chris Bascand, principal of Glentunnel School reported, “the cross over from broadband to fibre took place this week. It’s a transition, providing us with a much faster service that will cope with the growing demands on the internet system. The use of ICT in our learning is far greater than it has ever been. It will only grow as time goes on, as learning with ICT is blended more into students and teachers day to day lives at school.” The managed fibre network is capable of connecting more than 800,000 students, educators and school administrators across the country. Other local schools that will soon be hooked up to the new network will be; Greendale, Windwhistle, Kirwee Model, West Melton, Darfield and Hororata Schools.

To the Editors: On Monday, February 3rd it was a very hot day and a number of adults took the opportunity to swim in the Sheffield pool. In addition some of the classes from the local school also spent time learning to swim there. After the pool closed some scumbags climbed the pool fence and spent time in the pool, after which they deposited a quantity of human excrement in the water. The result was that the pool was then polluted and was unable to be used by anyone for some days. I did not realise that we had such people here in Malvern. The pool is the War Memorial to the servicemen who served in the second World War. It was built and paid for by the residents of Sheffield, Waddington and Annat. If you know the identity of the perpetrators, please inform the authorities.

Four free Confident Driving courses are being offered in Selwyn over the coming months, to help older drivers drive safely and with confidence. The number of older drivers is increasingly nationally, and the number of older drivers on Selwyn roads is also rising. Statistics indicate that in the majority of Selwyn district crashes involving people over sixty, driver errors such as failing to stop or give way at intersections and poor observation of other drivers, have played a role. “As many residents live in rural areas or smaller townships it is important for older people to be able to drive safely so as to access services and maintain their independence,” said Selwyn Road Safety Advisor Ngaire Tinning. Tinning Confident Driving courses are designed to assist older drivers be confident in their driving and increase awareness of the traffic environment and other road users. “It also aims to assist mature drivers to think about how, where and even when, they travel in their car,” Ngaire added. “They can consider planning safer routes to drive and to avoid extremely busy times when driving to the supermarket or shops.” The courses are delivered by Age Concern, on behalf of Selwyn District Council, as part of the Council’s road safety programme. Upcoming free courses, which also include lunch and refreshments, are being offered at these locations: Lincoln - February 26th Darfield - March 13th Rolleston - March 25th Leeston - April 9th

This is the story of the blonde flying in a two-seater airplane with just the pilot. He has a heart attack and dies. She, frantic, calls out a May Day. “May Day! May Day! Help me! Help me! My pilot had a heart attack and is dead. And I don't know how to fly. Help me! Please help me!” She hears a voice over the radio saying: “This is Air Traffic Control and I have you loud and clear. I will talk you through this and get you back on the ground. I've had a lot of experience with this kind of problem.” “Now, just take a deep breath. Everything will be fine!” “Now give me your height and position.” She says, “I'm 5'4” and I'm in the front seat.” “O.K,” says the voice on the radio .............. “Repeat after me: Our Father . . .. Who art in Heaven . . .”
