is determined by each year’s organiser, but the aim is to end up in Fairlie, South Canterbury. This year participants braved the cold, gathered at McLeans Island around 7:30am on Saturday, June 1st, and prepared for departure. From there the approximately one hundred and eighty vehicles (eight local participants took part) made their way down the Old West Coast Road and into the Waimakariri River bed at Kimberley, travelled though two farm properties (Shadbolt’s Shadbolt’s and Skurr’s), Skurr’s back out onto Waimak Gorge Road, and up Wrights Road to the Kowai River. From there, they went through Merhten’s farm to Kowai Bush, over the Pig Saddle, through the hills to Whitecliffs, across to Hororata before making a scheduled stop at Glentunnel School for lunch. Glentunnel school students,
parents and teachers did a wonderful job catering to the vintage car enthusiasts, as a fundraiser in preparation for their senior school camp later this year. Luncheon over, it was time to head to Fairlie, where the vehicles arrived about 5:30pm a total of around ten hours driving for the day. Another early start on Sunday morning saw participants tour around the area, making it to Tekapo, before heading back to Fairlie again for lunch and some friendly competitions. A slalom course and a short hill climb was set up for entrants, and Sunday evening saw the prizegiving for the rally winner. This is a trophy that no one was too keen to win - because it’s the unfortunate champion’s responsibility to organise the rally the following year!

Numerous folk attended ‘Dee’s Day’ at the Windwhistle home of Dee and Gerald Innes, Innes last Sunday. A huge range of products, crafts, foods and preserves were available for purchase and it was a wonderful opportunity for friends and neighbours to catch up. Funds from this year’s event are to be donated to St John’s Church, Hororata and after being tallied there was approximately $3,000 to be handed over. Sadly this is the last Dee’s Day to be held, but it’s not all doom and gloom as the event will evolve into something new, but similar, next year - with guaranteed good shopping and delicious food.
Team Hibrid Racing, consisting of Springfield’s Rick Johnson (driver), and Brent Davis (navigator), are set to compete in the warm up 2013 South Island IP Series, as well as the world’s premier jet boat race, the 2013 World Jet Boat Marathon, to be held in October. The pair race a 17’ Stinger tunnel hull, powered by a modified 4L V8 Nissan engine producing over 450hp at the flywheel. It has an American turbine single staged jet unit, capable of speeds up to 150 km per hour (95 mph). Over Queen’s Birthday weekend, while many were enjoying a wellearned break, Rick and Brent were busy racing at the Patea and Rangitikei Rivers’ Race. Up early, the pair left Springfield in the wee small hours to enable them to reach Picton in time for the ferry, before travelling and staying in Wanganui. The pair gained first place in the D Class on Saturday on the Patea River, proving that the early morning and long drive, were well worth the effort. On the third leg of the Patea River, the boat throttle jammed wide open at full speed, and the boys had to shut down the boat in the middle of the race. Luckily, there were plenty of mechanics in the crew to ensure the boat was repaired by Sunday. This enabled them to take the over-all winning spot on the Rangitikei River and with the fastest race time. The entire weekend’s race was a huge 310 kilometres of racing in total. The current national champion Turbine Boat, NZ1, as well as NZ2 and two FX Class boats also travelled from the South Island to compete in the Queen’s Birthday Weekend racing. According to both Rick and Brent, river racing is a pure

The team are extremely grateful for the huge amount of local sponsorship they’ve attracted. The support and sponsorship contributions have ensured that Rick and Brent are able to compete in the IP Series and the W o r l d M ar a th o n . October, is a total of 911 kilometres of boating, over nine days, in the Southern Districts, on various rivers. The next race is scheduled for July 6th, on the Waitaki River, down south. Team Hibrid Racing would like to thank the following sponsors for their support: • • • • • • • •

The Young Enterprise Scheme (Y.E.S) is an organisation which has been set up to help the youth of New Zealand gain workplace experience as well as how to run a business. Darfield High School had never been involved with Y.E.S, until 2013 when four senior students, Emily Tasker, Tasker Caitlin Brooks, Brooks Kate J enkins and myself (Genevieve Genevieve Jebson), Jebson decided to set up a babysitting business called Tots 2 Tweenies. Part of the scheme involves a presentation at Dragons’ Den, which was held this year at CPIT. Each of the many teams, from throughout Canterbury, had to present their business or product to a panel of three business CEO’s, which included the CEO from MACPAC this year. It was amazing to hear all about many of the other unique ideas presented by the teams from different schools. All of our hard work paid off as we were presented with one of the seven awards available, the 'Business Practice and Peoples' award. It was an awesome achievement for our team and I am really proud of their efforts. Dragons’ Den only counts for 30% of our overall total, so we may be eligible for Regional's or even Nationals, later this year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Thomson of DHS, for all the work he has put into our business. We would not be where we are today without his help and advice.
Genevieve Jebson on behalf of the Tots 2 Tweenies Team.

Autumn 2013 began with a very warm March and finished with a cooler than average May. In between, April was pretty much as expected. Rainfall was consistent throughout the period, ending the spell of hot dry weather we’d been experiencing since December 2012. Autumn, in our neck of the woods, is a scenic time of the year and 2013 was exactly that. A wet spring followed by a hot, dry summer may have contributed to the abundance of brightly coloured autumn leaves. Winter is now upon us and the mountains are already cloaked in snow. This will be my last weather article as my wife, Brigid, and I are moving away from the district in a few weeks time. We have purchased the Mt Dobson Motel near Fairlie and are looking forward to some snowy times in South Canterbury!

farmer who was experiencing trouble with his pivot irrigator damaging and breaking fence wires. The result was the Solcor Fence Defender, which was trialled and improved over a two year period, and is now a vai l ab l e th r o u g h CRT FarmCentres and PGG Wrightson Stores. Anyone having trouble with their Pivot Irrigator crossovers, should definitely read on. Pemberly Farm is a four hundred hectare lamb and beef finishing unit using large scale irrigation, with four pivots and three hundred crossovers. As with most pivots, where the tower crosses the fence there is immense pressure applied to the wire strands, especially where the tower crosses on an angle. Pemberly Farm was using a link ch ain s ys tem o n th ei r crossovers. It was held in place by ‘U’ clamps and left unsecured to the ground; they were always having problems with the fence wire breaking. In
September last year, they began trialling the Solcor Fence Defender system. Naturally they performed the trial on fences where the problems were the worst. Irrigation supervisor, Bill Tait has confirmed that the product is far superior to their previous setup and has overcome its inadequacies. Farm manager, Graeme Taylor noted that as their existing system fails, it is being replaced with the Solcor Fence Defender system. So, contrary to the belief that the angle crossing of the towers with the Solcor Fence Defender could be a problem, the Pemberly Farm experience proves this can be overcome. To view the Solcor Fence Defender system in action, go to www.solcor.com and click through to the video or brochure from the links at the bottom of the page. The Solcor Fence Defender System is available through local CRT and PGG Wrightson stores.

From the book by Phil Park and Bernard Dunn, Dunn lyrics by Phil Park and with the music of Latin America adapted and arranged by Ronald Hanmer, Hanmer this amateur production is sure to be a real crowd pleaser. This year’s production is again directed by local Mabel Knight, Knight and assisted by musical director Diane Coad. Coad Jeremy Smith joins the Players this year to play the part of Ramon, a promising
young bandit (also doubling as Zorro), while Amanda Hopkins again takes the lead actress role of Raquelita. Dozens of needles have been broken and a fair amount of sticking plasters have been used in creating the beautiful costumes for the forthcoming Selwyn School of Dance production of Sleeping Beauty, being performed at the Aurora Centre, Saturday June 15th. Over fifty tutus have been crafted for one of ballet’s most loved shows. Each tutu contains five metres of tulle and involves over thirty metres of sewing on the hooks and eyes, bodice and hand stitching to make the classic ‘pancake’ tutu. Along with the fairy and princess tutus, costumes for mice, wolves, fairies, countesses, queen, king, bears and villagers have also been stitched together to create a magical story. Emma Body, Body director of Selwyn School of Dance said, “hours and hours of work go into creating costumes for the children to fully experience a professional production. All the costuming has relied on volunteers who have done an amazing job.” “We have used over twenty metres of gold braid, ten metres of Hook and eye tape and hundreds of metres of chiffon, silk, satin, velvet, fairy floss, faux fur and ribbon - and many packets of sewing machine needles!” Sleeping Beauty is set in a faraway kingdom long, long ago, where the evil fairy Carabosse casts a spell on the realm’s baby Princess Aurora, cursing her to die on her sixteenth birthday.
The good Lilac Fairy comes to the rescue; she cannot break the curse, but can change the power of it by putting the Princess and the rest of the kingdom into a deep sleep. A hundred years later, Prince Désiré passes through the dark forest with his friends. The Lilac Fairy meets the Prince and together they set out to break Carabosse’s wicked spell. The cast of 120 students
ranging in ages from four years to adult forty plus, students have been practicing daily to bring the a u d i en c e a w o n d er f u l production. The Malvern and Courtenay A & P Associations’ Winter Feed Competition was held on Wednesday and Thursday, June 5th and 6th. This year, the we ath e r was a grea t improvement on the 2012 competition and the judges were able to enjoy two near faultless days, while they viewed thirty six of the area’s best winter feed paddocks. Because last year’s snow forced the competition to be cut short, both judges agreed to return this year. Judges were Rodney Smith, Smith from Rabobank, and Blair Cotching from Ravensdown (previously from Agricom) and they both worked well together to assess the paddocks. St ewa rds , G uy Bas set t (Malvern A & P) and Ashley Seaton (Courtenay A & P) also co-opted Chris Tidey, Tidey who has recently started as the Malvern area Ravensdown representative, to help with the paddock weighing. Crops were judged from Burnham right through to Lake Coleridge, and showed that a dry autumn resulted in less yield, but a more even quality.
RESULTS

The Pasture Cup was won by Graeme and Gill Marshall, Marshall and the R & D Scott Trophy (direct drill) went to Coleridge Downs. The Redfern Cup, which is given to the overall best crop, was won by Hamish and Andrea Reid, Reid for a paddock of fodder beet. The judges commented that this paddock was very even for yield and quality, which gave it a small points advantage. As usual, sponsors provided some great prizes. With thirty nine awards for thirty six paddocks, everyone went home with something. Organisers sincerely thank PGG Wrightsons, CRT, Ravensdown, Ballance, Avon City Ford, and the Coalgate Tavern for their continued support of this traditional local event.

To the Editors: The Said Bridge
WARNING – If you are easily offended and don’t have a sense of humour don’t read any more of this letter. You have been Warned “Repeat you have been Warned” Hold on to your steak pie, this is where it gets interesting. When you set out to name and shame someone you must be up for the game, have all the true and actual facts. What is a fact? A truth that can be proven. Here are some facts:Fact One: I Paddy McKay contacted SDC asking them to inspect the said bridge for any safety issues as it was brought to my attention. Fact Two: I Paddy McKay do not have any right or authority to order removal of the said bridge and didn’t do any such thing. If I did why did I contact SDC. Fact Three: When I Paddy McKay and one of the residents had a very heated discussion, which I can’t go into for legal reasons. I finally got a chance to explain my part in the process. (Same as above). Fact Four: So why does Paddy McKay have the said bridge in his yard, yes yard not backyard being used as many may have been led to believe. Heard of recycling - as it was stated the bridge has two (2) good poles and two (2) railway irons. The Railway Irons are to be used for marking where the railway line to Whitecliffs went through Westview Park by Skate park, we have been kindly given a small railway wagon which we will put a plaque on to commemorate this for part of our history. The poles are to be used for signs at McHugh’s Plantation. At this stage the bridge has not been harmed in any way, except for what fell off in transportation, due to rot. These are all the facts that I Paddy McKay have played a part of in the said bridge. When planning a public flogging, naming or shaming you must have all the true and correct facts, as that person also has a family which it also affects as they are part of the community. Paddy McKay Community Spokesperson, Leader, Dictator or something else. YOU DECIDE ! P.S. Sorry I ran out of humour. This letter was written under legal advice.

To the Editors:
I must express my sympathy with Donna Storer (Friday 7th June 2013) at having discovered that the walkway bridge over the water race in front of her home has been removed. Without any consultation. She goes on to say that neither the Catholic Community or the Darfield Community Committee had been consulted and the decision was made by Paddy McKay and Cr. Morten. This sort of thing is going on all the time in Selwyn. In our local domain we have had the surprise of having two children's see-saw's foisted upon us, at a grand cost of about $5000.00!? Nothing much wrong with the last one. Yet again no consultation. Even if the bridge was unsafe Cr. Morten is required under the 2002 Local Bodies Act under Consultation to "consult widely with the immediate community”. This obviously hasn't happened and Cr. Morten should be asked why Donna, the Catholic Community and the Darfield Committee have not been consulted. If no action is taken then a written complaint could be taken to the Mayor before the Ombudsmen's office. My bet is the SDC are going to replace that bridge with a 'modern' metal one at a fantastically inflated price. Let's hope Olive can follow the paper trail!
I sympathise with Ms Brookling for the loss of their dog and the effects on her family. But you are not being fair about the responsibility for the incident. "What was the dog doing running loose outside your property on a public road ?" Not stopping to face you about it is cowardly - but I think that you were lucky they did not stop as they might have asked you to pay for the damage done to their car by your roaming dog. Roaming animals cause lots of damage to vehicles and endanger people's lives. If the car in question was tr avel l ing in ex cess of 100kph (your road speed limit) then yes they were going too fast (by law). How fast were they going ?? Is it a police matter of dangerous driving ?? You could keep slowing everything so that this sort of thing never happens. Then we would be back about 100 years to where cars travelled no faster than walking pace and had someone walking in front of it. I agree the accident was totally unnecessary. It would not have happened if your dog was not roaming unattended on a public road.

The U7 Red team is coached by Jamie Hamilton and Marcus Nurse. Half of the team consists of first time players, who are showing considerable improvement with every game. They are following the lead of our second year players, who are playing exceptionally well, week in week out, and who are awaiting the call up from Steve Hansen in the near future. At the time of going to print, we have played six games with three wins and one draw. Thank you from the players and parents to all those involved in making these games possible for the kids, and thanks to Jamie and Marcus for all their patience and hard work.

Kirwee’s Under 7 Gold team is Coached by Jamie Ruwhiu and William Carter. They have had a great start to the season, and have done a lot of work on their ripping skills, as well as try scoring. This has involved showing the team how to place the ball down when crossing the try line. There is a mixture of skills in the team, and trying to ensure that all players get a rip and score a try before the end of the season is a goal the coaches have set. There are twelve members in the team, and they play a ten-aside tournament.
The Under 7 Black team is coached by Jo Lochore. They’ve also had a great start to the season, with plenty of new faces becoming part of the team. For many, this is their introductory season to Rippa Rugby. It’s been a great opportunity for some of the younger players to get out and have a go, and develop confidence, early on in the season. There are also a number of players that have stayed on from last season, and continued to build on their skill base, play some good rugby and have plenty of fun doing so.

shining through, with the likes of Logan Williams, Sam Robinson, Toby Stott, Declan Kenure, Fergus Johnson, Jeremy Bourhill, Max Topham, Ryan Brenmuhl and Henry Norris. They’ve all scored tries against formidable teams and all are playing with real heart. Although, the experienced players from last year can’t be forgotten. Players like Blake O’Donnell, Matthew Singh, Angus Pattie, George Evans, Tom Ruwhiu and Tommy Moriarty have all made a real difference to the team and have provided some good leadership for the newer members of the team. Collectively, they are developing a fantastic team culture. This has been made possible with the awesome help and support from coach, Simon Moriarty, Moriarty senior youth player, Harriet Evans and all of the team’s wonderful parents and supporters. The Kirwee Rugby Club has a real positive buzz, awesome facilities and great coaches. The Club can look forward to a continuing positive future with the type of players in this team coming through the ranks. Anything is possible from these amazing young men. Dare to dream. We have a small squad of about seventeen players which means plenty of game time for everyone! The team started the year slowly, but the players are working hard at training and this is now reaping results on the field. They have turned in some very good performances over the last few weeks and are scoring points and defending well. The team is coached by Geoff Taylor, Taylor Tony Plunkett and Heath Smith and they are well supported by parents. The boys are working hard and most of all - enjoying their rugby.

made up of local Malvern players, a contingent from MidCanterbury, and as many as fifteen currently studying at Lincoln University. The students definitely add not only playing ability, but also great character and humour to the Club. The formation of the team has been difficult, but with the determination of David Topham and the enthusiasm of the local players for recruiting friends from Lincoln University, it eventually came to fruition. The coaching is headed by Toppo, with Cameron Adams looking after the forwards. Both are well supported by a number of past and present players that offer insight and assistance. Results wise the season has progressed well, however early season preparation was less than ideal. Since then there has been steady improvement and the confidence, application of game plan, toughness and flair are soaring. There is nothing like Colts’ rugby and this team is no exception, in that they play a very entertaining and exciting style. Please come and support them and their many present followers, and you will not be disappointed.

the Kirwee Div III way. The success of this team should not be recorded solely on rugby results, but on the characters that play in it.

Since the opening of the new Kirwee Rugby Football Club clubrooms, earlier in the year, the Club has been extremely busy hosting a number of activities. The first was the annual Tens Tournament, which again was well attended by country and town teams alike, and was followed by the Canterbury Women’s Tens Tournament. It was the first time women’s rugby had held their tournament in the country and was much enjoyed by all. At the recent Club day the new Clubrooms were invaluable, because at long last a kitchen that could produce enough food for s everal teams simultaneously, was available. The new paved and sheltered courtyard saw supporters and spectators no longer having to
stand in the cold and mud. The Clubrooms themselves were, by evening, filled to capacity with an estimated two hundred players and supporters. The Club wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to all the parents and people involved in making the day so successful. Club Day was booming, with the Club being represented by all grades, from second division right through to three teams of U7 Rippa Rugby. Large numbers of supporters came along on a fine, sunny day and enjoyed not just the rugby, but also the atmosphere. The final touches to the Cl u b ro om s ar e n ear i ng completion, with photographs and memorabilia gracing the walls. The display cabinets are brimming with prized trophies, the Masefield Shield, as well as historic documents and clothing
that forms an important part of the Club’s history. The wool presses used as bar leaners, and donated to the Club by local farmers, along with the donated bricks on the foundation wall give the interior a welcoming country feel, and really show that this Club is not only very strong but is a huge part of the community. Further landscaping is planned for the Club, and permanent seating is intended for the courtyard area. The idea of a fixed barbecue for the community to use, has also been mooted. Birthday parties, school activities and community meetings are only some of a number of events held at the Clubrooms by the community, and this is exactly what the Club intended. St John Malvern is a small, but very dedicated group of volunteers based in Darfield, and covering the whole of the Malvern area (a historical name for the area between the Waimakariri and Rakaia Rivers from West Melton to Arthurs Pass). “We would very much like to establish a closer relationship with our community and let you know more about us. Starting this month, with the assistance of the Malvern News we are going to provide a Monthly Report of how we spend our time,” said Jill Hill of St John Malvern . “Keeping in mind that much of what we do is of a confidential nature and confidentiality is one of our strongest ethics, the monthly report will include figures that relate to how far we travelled, hours spent on duty and how many jobs we did that month but not where the jobs were.” As well as covering ambulance and events duties, St John Malvern meet weekly for training. Training that keeps volunteers current with what’s needed to be known for the provision of a service to the community that they are so proud to be part of.
STATISTICS DURING MAY 2013: • Darfield Ambulance travelled 2,816km, responding to 41 calls (15 Trauma and 26 Medical). • Volunteers spent 161 hours on Transport and covered 743 hours being on Standby. • The Event Ambulance/946 travelled 32km as Event Ambulance and 332km as Ambulance. • Events staff spent 30.5 hours on Duty providing cover at five events. • The other hours: (including courses, scenarios, ambulance checks, etc) during May added up to 134.5 hours, plus Training 132 hours making the total Volunteer Hours for May to 1,201

We’re now consulting on our draft Local Alcohol Policy. This policy will provide guidance to the District Licensing Committee which makes the decisions on liquor licence applications. The draft policy, submission forms, a statement of proposal and summary of information are available at all Council service centres and libraries and on the Council website www.sewyn.govt.nz/haveyoursay. The draft policy has been prepared under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 and once adopted will replace the existing Liquor Licensing Policy 2008. The draft policy proposes maximum trading hours for all licensed premises and provides conditions for special licences. The policy also proposes to not allow off-licences in proposed neighbourhood and local centres in Rolleston and Lincoln. The Council wants to hear your views on the draft policy. The consultation period runs from Wednesday 5 June to 5pm, Friday 5 July 2013. You can make a submission online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/haveyoursay or by emailing lap@selwyn.govt.nz. You can also post your submission to: Draft Local Alcohol Policy, Selwyn District Council, PO Box 90, Rolleston 7643. Council staff will also be available to answer questions at a drop in session on Tuesday 18 June 2013, 5.30 - 8.30pm at Rolleston Community Centre, 94 Rolleston Drive.

A man walks into a bar and is about to order a drink when he sees a guy close by wearing the attire of a group he actively dislikes! So, he shouts over to the bartender so loudly that everyone can hear, "Drinks for everyone in here, bartender, but not for that #@** over there. ” Soon after the drinks have been handed out, the ’#@**’ gives him a big smile, waves at him, then says, “Thank you!” in an equally loud voice. This infuriates the man no end. He once again loudly orders drinks for everyone except the ‘#@**’. As before, this does not seem to bother the guy. He continues to smile, and again yells, "thank you!" The man can’t believe it and asks the bartender, “What the hell is the matter with that ‘#@**’? I've ordered two rounds of drinks for everyone in the bar but him, and all the silly sod does is smile and thank me. Is he nuts?” "Nope,” replies the bartender. “He owns the place!”
