ACADEMIC PROJECT EXPERIENCE
One of the greatest privileges of an architect is to make architecture for institutions of higher learning.
KPMB Architects, is one of North America’s leading architectural studios. It was founded in 1987 as a hybrid studio model, offering an alternative model to the sole practitioner or the large corporate firm. It is based on diversity, integrative design thinking, and intensive collaboration between architects, clients, engineers and experts. Regardless of scale, every project is conceived as a response to a client’s vision and the project context. Ultimately, the architecture of KPMB focuses on enriching the experiences of contemporary life, designing for the long term and city building, and creating spaces that catalyse interaction and community.
ACADEMIC PROJECT EXPERIENCE
The diversity of projects and KPMB’s commitment to architectural excellence has attracted exceptional clients and projects across Canada, the United States and Europe. This includes work with many of North America’s leading institutions, including the Toronto International Film Festival, Canada’s National Ballet School, Goodman Theatre, Yale University, the University of Michigan and the University of Toronto. Currently, KPMB is designing projects for Princeton University, the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, Boston University, Lethbridge University, University of Pennsylvania, and University of British Columbia.
Kwantlen Polytechnic University
The studio is an advocate of sustainability and has delivered some of North America’s most energy efficient projects. KPMB has completed two LEED Platinum certified buildings: the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (2013) and Manitoba Hydro Place (2009) which has achieved 70%+ energy savings and is the largest office building in Canada to be LEED Platinum certified. Current LEED Gold targeted projects, include George Brown College Health Sciences Campus on the Toronto Waterfront, the Southcore Financial Centre in Toronto and Vaughan City Hall. KPMB’s projects have been recognized with over 200 awards for architectural excellence, including 14 Governor General’s Medals, 5 AIA Institute Honor Awards for Architecture Awards and three of the founding partners are recipients of the Order of Canada.
We have worked for over 20 academic clients, many of which have led to repeat commissions including: Boston University Centre for International Governance Innovation Concordia University George Brown College Haverford College McGill University McMaster University Massachusetts Institute of Technology Northwestern University Ontario College of Art and Design Princeton University Queen’s University Royal Conservatory of Music Ryerson University St. Andrew’s College Trinity College University of Lethbridge University of Michigan University of Pennsylvania University of Toronto University of Waterloo Yale University
JOSEPH L. ROTMAN SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT, UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO
“
KPMB’s design expresses our core mission to pursue scholarly excellence and promote the power of creativity and Integrative Thinking. Their design emphasizes strategic connectivity, both inside and out. The architecture draws on the value of what surrounds it and expands that value beyond the site, well into the campus and the city of Toronto.
– Mary-Ellen Yeomans, Rotman School’s Assistant Dean, Integrative Planning & Chief Operating Officer

“
KPMB’s brand of modernism is one that approaches architecture less as the creation of artifacts than of spaces. In earlier times, the emphasis was reversed; as often as not, grand exteriors came at the expense of indifferent interiors. Today, what a building looks like less important than how it makes us feel. It is the difference between image and experience. – Christopher Hume, the Toronto Star

Designed by KPMB Architects, this is the most successful building to have appeared so far on the fast changing waterfront. KPMB’s contribution comprises an elegant glass-and-steel box on the outside and a continuation of the city inside. Intended for maximum flexibility and connectivity, it is a series of light-filled spaces able to serve multiple purposes. Even the stairwells do double duty as gathering places. – Christopher Hume, The Toronto Star, December, 2012

…on the west elevation, the result is a remarkably visceral expression of Montreal’s physical sense of built place. Despite a vast separation in architectural expression and even materials, 740 Docteur-Penfield resonates in scale, tones, and sense of presence with the city’s many defining gray stone buildings. – Rhys Phillips, Building (December/January 2004)
“
The Study at Yale — which plays up the academic connection with old-fashioned spectacles for its logo and a bookmark slipped into the sleeve for the electronic room key — did not disappoint. The lobby is a mod living room, furnished with clean-lined leather armchairs and a floor-to-ceiling bookcase full of art and architecture books. My seventh-floor room had a marble-floored bath, Tolomeo desk lamp, oak furniture with lightened finish and windows overlooking the slate roofs of the Yale campus. – Jane Margolies, New York Times, March 13, 2009

The project has been enormously successful and I can honestly say that KPMB have become one of the favorite architects at Princeton. Our programmatic objective for this project has been to create a single identity and home for Economics, whose departments and centers are currently dispersed in six different buildings.
