MIXED-USE EXPERIENCE
Few blocks anywhere in North America contain so many different kinds of buildings by one architectural firm, all varied in their expression and yet all extraordinary in their sensitivity to the opportunities and challenges of making additions or alterations to existing structures. Taken together, these buildings, like almost all that KPMB have designed, envision a new kind of city: ‘Ourtopia’ – Thomas Fisher, Profezssor in the School of Architecture and Dean of the College of Design at the University of Minnesota
KPMB Architects, is one of North America’s leading architectural studios. It was founded in 1987 as a hybrid studio model, offering an alternative model to the sole practitioner or the large corporate firm. It is based on diversity, integrative design thinking, and intensive collaboration between architects, clients, engineers and experts. Regardless of scale, every project is conceived as a response to a client’s vision and the project context. Ultimately, the architecture of KPMB focuses on enriching the experiences of contemporary life, designing for the long term and city building, and creating spaces that catalyse interaction and community. The diversity of projects and KPMB’s commitment to architectural excellence has attracted exceptional clients and projects across Canada, the United States and Europe. This includes work with many of North America’s leading institutions, including the Toronto International Film Festival, Canada’s National Ballet School, Goodman Theatre, Yale University, the University of Michigan and the University of Toronto. Currently, KPMB is designing projects for Princeton University, the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, Boston University, University of Pennsylvania, University of British Columbia, as well as mixed-use projects for Brookfield Properties and Oxford Properties. The studio is an advocate of sustainability and has delivered some of North America’s most energy efficient projects. KPMB has completed two LEED Platinum certified buildings: the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (2013) and Manitoba Hydro Place (2009) which has achieved 70%+ energy savings and is the largest office building in Canada to be LEED Platinum certified. Current LEED Gold targeted projects, include George Brown College Health Sciences Campus on the Toronto Waterfront, the Southcore Financial Centre in Toronto and Vaughan City Hall. KPMB’s projects have been recognized with over 200 awards for architectural excellence, including 14 Governor General’s Medals, 5 AIA Institute Honor Awards for Architecture Awards and three of the founding partners are recipients of the Order of Canada.

Soundwise, the venue is quite simply one of the best on the planet… It’s the closest you’ll come to seeing a film from within a recording studio, and you can tell by the hush that sets in acoustically as you walk down the hall to get your seat that you’re in for something special.
