Since water is the resource most at risk throughout the world, it is important to select fixtures, particularly toilets, which accomplish the task but use less water. (And replacing dripping faucets and showerheads with newer, more efficient models is never a bad idea!) Lastly, appliances that have been awarded the Energy Star rating not only conserve energy but also cook and bake more efficiently and preserve foods for longer periods by using the latest technology in controlling heat distribution, humidity, and air filtering.
SHADES OF GREEN by Ken Dempsey,
It doesn’t make any difference whether you favor mauves, blues, yellows or earth tones on your walls: you can still have a green kitchen! Environmentally friendly materials are sought after in today’s kitchen and bathroom design field, because designers not only want to give their clients functional and esthetically pleasing kitchens and bathrooms but they also want to match their clients’ desires to recycle and to preserve the environment as much as possible by using materials that come from sustainable resources. Lyptus, is a wood that is plantation grown in South America and it regenerates from its own stump in less than 14 years. Lyptus has a rich mahoganylike grain and lends itself to both traditional and contemporary cabinets. Another option is quick-growing bamboo, which has a pleasing vertical grain. Bamboo cabinets are visually stunning in either kitchens or bathrooms and create a calming Zen-like atmosphere wherever they are placed, particularly when paired with river rock or sea glass tiles.
Cabinets can be stained or painted using NO VOC paints, paints that do not contain any unhealthy volatile organic compounds that could be out fumed into living areas. Using no VOC paint is definitely preferable when there are allergy or asthma sufferers in the family. Floors and countertops are two areas that offer many options in environmentally friendly materials. Marmoleum® flooring is a naturally based floor covering made with linseed oil, wood flour and jute. It is available in a multitude of colors and patterns and certified healthy for consumers with allergies or asthma. Recycled metals and glass embedded in resins or concrete afford homeowners practical work surfaces and dramatic countertops that show depth and reflect light. Countertops of compressed paper are another creative solution and are available in ever-increasing colors. Regionally mined granite and slate from Vermont, Maine, and Canada are also good choices for durability and require less fuel to transport to the Boston metropolitan area than stones from South America or the other side of the ocean.
There is no question that, in today’s market, some environmentally friendly materials can be more expensive than materials that have been traditionally used in kitchen and bathroom renovations. However, working with a professional designer will enable clients to make choices of materials that will provide a comfort level reflective of the shade (or degree) of green desired. A thorough professional design specialist will assist the clients to create an environmentally friendly space without sacrificing a planned budget.

Tom and Peter handle a great deal of remodeling projects at Rainbow Home Improvement, and offer the following handy list of considerations for homeowners looking to hire contractors:
1. Have a plan and a vision before you begin. “Homeowners need to do their homework,” says Peter. Understand what your wants are, and what you envision the remodeling to look like when finished. Utilize your strengths and make the project feel like “you.” Communicate your desires well in advance.
2. Bring in a professional contractor with whom you can talk and build rapport, especially if you don’t yet know for certain what you want. “There’s no way [the big corporate contractors] can do that,” says Peter. “That’s why we have so much call-back business–because our clients trust us.”

5 Special Provincetown Homes of the Past in the Present Laughter fills the air as friends adjourn from a dinner party and gather on the deck with glasses of white wine. The setting is Provincetown. These scenes are becoming increasingly popular as a mix of gay and straight professionals escape their corporate lives to relax in quintessential Cape Cod homes that have been lovingly restored and maintained. Whether owned by the same family for decades, or recently purchased, Savoir Flair visited five exquisite homes that are rich in history, colorful in dĂŠcor and rarely seen from the

This waterfront home lovingly called Dewey Cottage, rests atop a coastal dune in a private East End setting. There have only been three owners of this amazing property. The Days family constructed the cottage in 1894 with leftover wood from a nearby project. Art Critic Hutchins Hapgood and his wife Neith Boyce, a writer, purchased the property in 1919. The current owners, artists Bob and Sharon Fodor bought the property in 1983. Dewey Cottage served as the

There are also rumors that friends of Neith Boyce such as Georgia O’Keeffe and Gertrude Stein may have visited. There is a soothing energy that greets you when you step onto the grounds of this warm and inviting home. The current owners recognized this when they first rented the property for vacation in 1979, when Sharon The Dewey Cottage as it looks today
Fodor turned to Bob and exclaimed, “someday we’re going to live here.” They bought the house in dilapidated condition from Miriam Dewitt in 1983 after promising to restore rather than renovate. This is exactly what the Fodors have done and today it has been transformed into a Provincetown gem frozen in time. It contains all the comforts of modern amenities, yet the Fodors were careful to retain the Cape Cod décor. They removed wallpaper from the second level bed-

They made other alterations to the 1738 square foot cottage over the years including raising the roof and building an attached studio that has northern exposure. This is one location where you can watch the sun rise over the dunes of East Harbor and set over Provincetown providing a divine display of natural color. A gentle, winding path leads you from the home to 145 feet of private, sandy beach. A separate free standing cottage built in 1920 can be found in the garden. It was a rescue station moved from Chatham in 1950. This cozy jewel has been insulated and is now a library. This meticulously restored and maintained home is a step back to yesteryear.

Tree Tops in Provincetown’s far East End
258 Bradford | Tree Top Nestled on top of one of the highest points in Provincetown’s East End, this home was a well known tea house around the turn of the last century. Zoe Mabel Morse bought the land and constructed the home in 1910. She named the property Tree Tops, opening a tea house called the Piazza Tea Room. She served lunch, tea and supper and sold unusual gifts. Ladiesgathered 0here while their husbands attended to their gentlemen duties in town. When Zoe came to Provincetown each spring to open the house for the season, the local newspaper would announce her arrival.

Providence, R.I., Saturday, February 18, 1978
By Judy Van Handle Rosy White was hanging out at a lesbian bar in Cambridge one night in the late 1970s, taking a break from her duties as a producer at a Boston television WCVB, when she spotted what she thought was a familiar face across the darkened room. Another glance confirmed it: White had indeed seen a co-worker–more specifically, a high-profile news anchor. Given that White knew of no other lesbians or gay people at Channel 5, it was a promising and significant though ultimately fruitless moment. “She recognized me, and was friendlier to me at work,” said White. But not much else. In those days, acknowledgement did not always beget openness, and the anchor never struck up much of a friendship with White and remained closeted to the general public. Even when she left the station, and the electronic media, a few years later, the TV personality’s long-time partner was described in a Boston Globe profile only as a person with whom she “shared living expenses.” However, there were no euphemisms in store two years ago, when Randy Price and Mark Steffen exchanged marriage vows on the steps of the Massachusetts State House. The ceremony involving Price, a nightly news anchor at Channel 7, and his spouse elicited a simple statement from his station: “7 News wants to congratulate an important part of our team.” Gay men and lesbians have always been a vital part of the Boston media, but for many years the people who delivered the news were reluctant, or simply refused, to reveal much regarding their lives off camera. Gradually, however, that silence and reticence has been replaced by an increasing and widespread openness among the people who deliver the news. TV personalities are common sights as emcees at gay and lesbian dinners, AIDS walks, and all kinds of GLBT-related events. Newspaper reporters are moonlighting by writing best-selling gay-themed books, others are posting humorous signs near their desks referring to their sexual orientation, and one had her marriage announcement published in the society pages of the New York Times. continued on next page
savoirflairmagazine 27
Our Media Icons Many of them belong to The National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association, which has had a Boston chapter for over 15 years. And in an unprecedented move, one gay anchor replaced Boston’s other gay anchor at a network affiliate in June–a bit of GLBT history since it was the first time a gay anchor had taken another’s place in not only Boston but nationwide. Indeed, it sometimes seems as if the love that once dared not speak its name now has a constant conversation going on with the public. For many of the younger members of the communications industry, the stuffiness of the closet is difficult to comprehend–or even understand why their sexual orientation could ever
have been perceived as a hindrance. “Overall, my being gay has helped my career, not hurt it,” said Johnny Diaz, a Living/Arts reporter for the Boston Globe. No one was issuing such declarations in 1990, when Price made history by becoming the first TV news anchor in the nation to come out, thanks to a newspaper interview. Then a 14-year veteran of the news business, seven in Boston, Price’s reasoning was uncomplicated. “It wasn’t a big secret revealed,” Price told Diaz in a 2007 Globe profile. “But I was very interested in talking about it because our business is supposedly about facts and honesty. I had the real fortunate circumstance of having a relationship with viewers, people knowing me for the totality of who I was except for that one element. It’s about me as a person.” Thus was born a pioneer. The 59-year-old Price had begun his long career in TV with jobs in Bakersfield, Calif., and Toledo, Ohio, before joining Channel 4 in 1983. The words “classy,” “intelligent” and “elegant” have been commonly affixed to Price’s style, both off and on the air. He was a familiar sight as an emcee at fundraising events for gay causes such as the Fenway Community Health Center, MassEquality and Pride Lights,

and also for the MSPCA and animal rights, autism and youth and family groups. He eventually left Channel 7 in a well-publicized split in February, but his exit didn’t last long–nor leave Boston without an openly gay presence on the anchor desk. When Channel 5 named Price to co-anchor its “EyeOpener” newscast–giving him the distinction of working at Boston’s ABC, NBC and CBS affiliates he was replacing the city’s other gay anchor. David Brown had served as Channel 5’s early morning anchor since 2007. “I’ve spent more of my career on morning news programs and I love it because it really helps New Englanders’ get their day started,” Price said in a press release after he was hired by WCVB. “It’s a privilege to be able to have that re-

His lack of reticence about his life off camera was a big reason why. Brown had been open about his sexual orientation from the moment he was hired by Channel 5 in 1995. After an initial

assignment as the EyeOpener’s meteorologist, Brown jumped to the anchor desk for his two-year stint. His newest jobs at the station are as a reporter and substitute weather anchor. Such positions would be enough to generate plenty of name recognition, but Brown has gained an even higher profile with the GLBT community thanks to his involvement in charity efforts. He’s emceed the AIDS Walk, one of AIDS Action’s biggest fundraisers, and also ran in a 5K fundraiser for the group. He followed that up by hosting–as well as riding in the Harbor to the Bay charity bicycle race for HIV/AIDS fundraising that stretches from Boston to Provincetown in the Fall. Channel 5 is a sponsor of each event.
But White remembers a very different time at Channel 5, as it was for the media in general, during the 1970s, years when the gay movement was making its first baby steps toward acceptance and simply learn-
ing of another gay person on the job was a seismic event. “At least I knew of one other gay person (at work),” said White, who left TV shortly after and now owns Strong Financial Services in Cambridge. “Now, it’s not a big deal.” It also wasn’t a huge issue to turn on the radio during the 1970s and find a program dedicated to gay and lesbian issues. In 1974, when Elaine Noble was elected to the Massachusetts State House as the first openly gay or lesbian politician in the country, Ann Maguire was hosting a weekly gayrelated show on WBUR. In the not too distance past, the only way to make your home environmentally friendly was to turn it into an eyesore: clunky solar panels on a roof or a pile of compost in the backyard. Now that more people are looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact, there has been a similar upsurge in the design and aesthetics of earth-friendly products.

White pine is a native New England tree which offers lumber that darkens to a rich tan. White pine has been used in New England homes for hundreds of years. Quartz Countertops: Quarried quartz is combined with recycled materials and pigments to create a strong, very durable surfacing material in a variety of beautiful colors. In addition to using recycled materials in the actual countertops, many companies that offer quartz products go far above and beyond the environmental guidelines for manufacturing. These countertops would be a wonderful, natural looking addition to any green kitchen. They offer the look of granite or marble with a much reduced environmental impact in a wide range of colors. Energy Star appliances: Although the program has been around for more than a decade, many companies only produce select products with the Energy Star seal. Many products from light bulbs to televisions to washing machines can qualify for Local Woods: Frequently, when building a patio or even laying wood flooring, local New England wood such as pine, oak or maple is used in the process. Not only does using local wood significantly cut the fossil fuels burned in transporting the wood across the globe, but it can assure that the wood is managed sustainably as well. Local hardwoods can be harvested with devastating environmental impact, decimating the rainforests and hardwood forests in other parts of the world. Are you being served with Great Gay Attitude? A Portrait of Our Community’s Restaurateurs and Bartenders By David Olearcek 34 savoirflairmagazine
he hospitality industry has no doubt played an important role in the growth of many GLBT communities and helped in shaping the social stratum by which we survive. Evidenced in our proclivity to people, places and parties, it makes perfect sense that the food and beverage biz is most accountable for germinating gay gathering spots, overt or obscure, all over the map. Certainly we’ve all waxed romantic with the notion of having our own place in which to loiter, treating our friends to cocktails, listening to great music in an enviable environment, enjoying everyday life. But the left-brain logic of owning a dining or drinking establishment leverages that lust for the leisure trade. It’s like deciding to marry—you have to put in a lot of time, energy and commitment to make it work over the long haul, and even then there’s plenty of tumult. There are however the intrepid few, as these venerable veterans exhibit, who with foresight, adventure, and ambition have made their mark through changing times socially, culturally, economically in an industry that’s now driven by the very ideology it worked to establish. “I wanted to make money like everyone else, but it was a labor of love,” says Gina Bartolomucci, who opened Deville’s nightclub in Providence in 1989. “People ask me all the time why I did it,” she divulged. “I just didn’t like what I had been doing.” Bored with an inside sales job at an electronics firm, she was lamenting her plight one day after
work with a friend in a similar situation. What could they do to change their circumstances? “We like to drink,” she said giggling. “So we decided to open a bar.” That, and the fact that there was a lack of lesbian locations for the women of Rhode Island to congregate, is how Deville’s became Providence’s premier place for girls to gather for 17 years. “My hope was that it would evolve into a gay bar,” Gina admits. And in 1989, during the pre-L Word and outed-Ellen era, it was “not an easy thing for women to do.” There was no positive portrayal of the lesbian lifestyle to desensitize the public, so opening a bar to cater to a lesbian clientele was a dangerous prospect, Gina acknowledged. “I’d been physically threatened a few times over the years.” Women were afraid to be seen in the bar, or even near the address. “They should have been,” said Gina. The threat of being harassed, even to the extent of losing one’s job, loomed large at the time. Nor was there a media outlet in which to adver-
tise. “We didn’t have the internet back then, and with limited GLBT publications, it was hard to get the word out.” But Gina’s virgin venture, which started as a small café at 10 Davol Square in July of 1989, made gay bar glory by September. “Oh, we had our share of typical dyke drama,” Gina confessed. “But when we’d close the bar, we’d have a drink, and laugh about it.” After two moves (once for expansion, once for eminent domain), Deville’s closed its doors in 2006. “If it hadn’t been for the relocation I’d still be at it,” said Gina. “But it was worth it. I went out on top with a fond memory. It was the greatest part of my life.” Jimmy McNulty, a disillusioned computer studies student at Boston’s Northeastern U., took a bartending course as a backup to his academia. Next thing he knew, he was thrown into the throngs of Tony times. He started pouring potables at the wildly popular Uncle Charlie’s Downtown in NYC’s Greenwich Vi l l a g e .
Are you being served with Great Gay attitude? The year was 1981, “back when everyone on Wall Street was making money hand over fist,” Jimmy remarked. “It’d be two-for-one, 5:30 on a weekday, and five deep at the bar.” Appealing to a new generation of
Jimmy made this with-it watering hole his meal ticket for ten years. After that, it was Provincetown. The Lobster Pot (the Top of the Pot bar) bestowed upon Jimmy his drink dispensing distinction for another decade. “Year after
gay men, Uncle Charlie’s was one of the early gay bars to change the “scene” from seedy to chic and
year I kept seeing the same clientele,” Jimmy explained. “And they’d all say, ‘you should open
your own place.’” So he did, with his life (and now business) partner, Raife Menold. And before you can say “where people meet and laughter follows” (their catchphrase) or look up apophenia (the experience of seeing connections in random or unrelated phenomena), Jimmy’s HideAway became one of Provincetown’s popular places to patronize. That was three years ago, and eleven years into Raife and Jimmy’s relationship. “Eleven is our number,” Raife revealed when telling the tale of their takeoff. Early on, a trip the two took to New Zealand to meet Raife’s ex-wife resulted in a revelation. Being a sort of spiritual soul, she quickly noted the number 11 surrounding their circumstances. “It kept randomly appearing,” said Raife. “Like, we’d go out to eat and the check would come to $111.11.” So, it isn’t surprising they’d embarked on their prandial project after eleven years together. “One night I came home after a particularly rough night at the

Pot,” Jimmy recounts. “Raife had been working in real estate at the time, and he said, ‘There’s a restaurant on the market you might be interested in.’” So they dined out in the thenAsian eatery and toured the property the next day with the realtor. “After that, I said to Jimmy, ‘So I guess I’m back in the restaurant business”, Raife recalled. With fifty years of combined hospitality experience between them, “It’s the business we know,” said Raife. “There’s definitely a passion.” And by the way, the land tract number of 179 Commercial Street is 11-11 on the Provincetown Record of Deeds. Their phone number, 487-1011. Coincidence? Now, on any given night, there’s a conglomeration of clientele mingling in the milieu. “A drag queen will be sitting next to a fisherman sitting next to a [straight] couple from Kansas,” Jimmy said. “We’re lucky enough to be in a town that’s evolved, where gay is not an issue.” “It doesn’t matter what kind of
place it is, people go where their friends go,” says Gary Staples about the shifting pattern of GLBT commerce. “Things are different now.” Gary should know. He’s been a fixture at Fritz (at the Chandler Inn, 26 Chandler Street) in Boston for 23 of the 25 years the bar’s
been open. And even before that, he’d worked at the best of Boston’s boy-bar scene since the 70s: Chap’s, Buddies’, 1270. Gary, whose brother introduced him to the business, learned it from the ground up. That is to say, from the door to the floor to the bar to the office. What he’s Continued on page 72

A Word About Flowers Flowers are the second most beautiful visual aspect of a ceremony, next to the happy couple of course. They can create an illusion, set a mood, or transform a simple area into something quite splendid. If a religious site is planned for the vows, make sure you check with your contact person about rules regarding flowers—amounts, placement, fire regulations, etc. Some religious sites request that you leave the flowers as a donation after the ceremony, so you'll want to know this ahead of time especially if you plan to have the flower arrangements doing double duty at the reception. Flowers are often used to convey a special message. Listed below are some of the more well known posies and their meanings:

Marriage with benefits? By Rosemary D. White
We’re not quite to the point where gay marriage is sweeping the country, but 16,000 Massachusetts couples certainly got the ball rolling, having celebrated the fifth anniversary of the momentous Supreme Judicial Court ruling on May 17th. As of this writing, New York and New Jersey are moving toward marriage equality. Connecticut, Vermont, Iowa, New Hampshire and Maine have joined Massachusetts in permitting gay marriage (although equal marriage opponents are trying for another repeal vote in the Pine Tree State in November). In California, a federal lawsuit has been filed that seeks to overturn Proposition 8 and ultimately permit our marriages in all 50 states. As you probably know, marriage provides heterosexual couples 1,138 protections and benefits including the following financial biggies: •Using the Family and Medical Leave Act to care for a seriously ill spouse •Being able to receive a deceased spouse’s Social Security benefit, if it’s higher than your own •Estate planning protections that allow a spouse to leave assets to the other spouse without having to pay income or estate taxes •Joint filing status and income tax deductions which can save couples money •Being able to receive family health insurance coverage from one’s employer without having to pay additional income taxes (imputed income) My spouse and I are very proud to be living in Cambridge, MA, the first city in the country to recognize gay marriage. And while we’ve experienced some of the matrimonial benefits at the state level, the big financial stuff we all really want, and deserve, is at the federal level. Topping the list is imputed income on health insurance benefits. Why Imputed Income Is A Problem For as long as we can remember, health insurance provided by an emcontinued on next page

Marriage with benefits?
ployer was a benefit that was never taxed. For employers, paying the ever increasing premium has always been a nice income tax deduction. Latest government figures estimate more than 253 million Americans have health insurance in the United States. Roughly 70% get some, if not all, of their health insurance through work. It’s been one of those “sacred cows” in American life. Here’s how it’s different for lesbians or gays: if you get your health insurance through your beloved, your spouse/partner pays income tax on the value of your insurance premium. The tax code calls it “imputed income” and it’s permitted because our marriages (and domestic partnerships) are not recognized by the federal and most state governments. A majority of states have passed Constitutional Amendments defining marriage as an act between one man and one woman. The same was codified at the federal level in 1996 with the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The actual amount of additional tax depends on the employee’s tax bracket. According to a 2007 report by the Center for American Progress, gay and lesbian employees who provide health insurance to their partner pay an average of $1,069 more in income tax every year than would a heterosexual couple with the same coverage. Because of this discrimination, our spouses also can’t take advantage of those cafeteria plans, where employees can use pre-tax dollars to cover co-pays and other healthcarerelated expenses: Health Savings Accounts, Flexible Spending Accounts and Health Reimbursement Accounts. Once a state recognizes gay marriage, employers should stop taxing the imputed income at that state’s tax rate. But the taxation at the federal level (25%, 28%, 30%, etc.) will continue. Attacking on Three Fronts Proving, once again, that our community can multi-task big time, there are several approaches underway now to change the practice of taxing imputed income of health insurance premiums. First, and most importantly, Gay & Lesbian
Marriage with benefits?
Advocates and Defenders (GLAD) recently filed a lawsuit in Federal District Court in Boston to challenge Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act. Gill, et al v. Office of Personnel Management, et al, argues that legally married gays and lesbians should not be denied the benefits and protections provided by the federal government... benefits like those mentioned at the beginning of this column…. that are readily available to heterosexual married couples. GLAD believes Section 3 violates the equal protection laws contained in the 5th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and that laws about marriage have always been the perview of the states. There are eight couples and three individuals who are the plaintiffs. Hats off to all of them, and especially GLAD, for continuing to push the envelope. Secondly, there’s legislation in both houses of Congress to stop the taxation of imputed income. The Tax Equity for Domestic Partner and Health Plan Beneficiaries Act (S. 1556) and the House’s Tax Equity for Health Plan Beneficiaries Act (H.R.1820) were first introduced in 2007. If approved by Congress and signed by the President, the taxation of health insurance benefits would be eliminated. It would also clarify federal law so that domestic partners and other non-spouses could participate in those pre-tax cafeteria plans. The bill does not require employers to provide health insurance for non-spouses. The current legislation was introduced by Sen. Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) and has 120 co-sponsors. Encourage your friends across the country to write their Senators and Congressperson to support these bills.

Finally, you can encourage your employer to join the movement to stop imputed income and support equity in the workplace. According to the Human Rights Coalition (HRC), 57% of Fortune 500 companies provide domestic partner benefits. Increasingly, employers are joining the Business Coalition for Benefits Tax Equity because they want to attract and keep the best employees (that would be us). The more employers who join, the more clout our community will have to push through our agenda in Washington and individual states. Some of the companies in this coalition are: Levi Strauss & Co., Aetna, the American Benefits Council, Bausch & Lomb, Inc., Best Buy Co., Inc. CNA Insurance, The Dow Chemical Co., Ernst & Young, General Mills, Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM Corp., Intel Corp., Merck & Co., Microsoft Corp., Texas Instruments, and Verizon. It’s crucial that increasing numbers of employers step up and support marriage equality across the country. It’s also very important that all of us support our friends. The Obama Administration is making a big push to overhaul healthcare in the U.S. One way to pay for it, it’s been suggested, is a new tax on employerpaid health insurance benefits. In my opinion, this is not a good idea, since it would force millions of Americans to pay additional taxes and might cause many employers to eliminate health insurance as a benefit. We don’t want our heterosexual friends to pay more. We want gays and lesbians to pay less. Keep an eye on Congress.
Marriage with benefits?
So, our battle for full equality will continue. Eliminating imputed income on health insurance premiums and guaranteeing equitable treatment for Social Security and other federal benefits will be a huge leap toward improving the financial security that we all deserve. t

Northampton-based partners in work and life, Tom Malone and Peter Cabaniol of Rainbow Home Improvement. Tom and Peter truly understand renovation, from both a personal and business perspective! “We met at gay/bisexual married men’s group in Hartford, CT,” explains Peter of the start of their relationship. “It was almost a year before we started dating.” When they met, both Peter and Tom were in the latter stages of their heterosexual marriages, and at the beginning of the difficult coming out and divorce processes. “It was probably the most difficult time in our lives—the emotions were unbelievable. Tom and I supported each other constantly.”

Tom and Peter connected immediately, and as their relationship deepened, they knew they were in it for the long haul. Many longterm couples can cite amazing similarities between the two of them, and Peter says they are no exception—they even have the exact same chipped tooth in the center of their smiles! “There are so many common traits between us. It’s amazing actually. There’s a connectivity that I’ve never felt with anyone else. We have similar stories, similar things that we went through. There’s a lot of commonality—not only hardships, but the things we enjoy doing all the time. I mean, that’s why we spend so much time together. People say, ‘It’s not natural!’ But it’s perfect.”
Inclusive... And so much more.
Spend your retirement years living well at Sweetwood Continuing Care Retirement Community in Williamstown, MA. Here, you can enjoy world-class arts & culture, gorgeous views, luxury apartments just waiting for your personal touch; and the freedom to be who you are.
The wedding… Once marriage became a possibility, the pair wasted no time. They were the third male couple to receive their marriage license on May 17th in Northampton, and were married on May 26th in an intimate ceremony of their combined families. “We had traditional-styled vows that we kind of made up,” says Tom. Tom and Peter are both parents, and their four children gave them away and read passages

from a Carey Martin poem entitled Soulmates. “Everyone was crying,” adds Peter. “It was absolutely beautiful.” The business… Tom and Peter founded Rainbow Home Improvement in 2002. Peter has an extensive executive management background, while Tom has 20+ years’experience as a construction contractor. Together, they handle all sorts of home improvement projects, primarily in Western Massachusetts, for primarily gay clientele. Tom says word of mouth has brought them the majority of their business. Peter cannot imagine anything better than working with his spouse: “There’s so little strife... it leaves a lot of time for just enjoying life. We’re working, but we’re just enjoying life while we’re working. It’s like the only place we want to be is around each other, so we might as well work and make some money!” t

think Michael Urie is straight. But there I go digressing again. “Mulligans” also featured Thea Gill, who I remembered from “The L Word” (yes, I watched an episode or two, even though I haven’t been a lesbian for years) and Dan Payne, who played the father of David’s character’s best friend and who I may have remem-
bered from appearances on “Battlestar Galactica” and “Stargate Atlantis.” So I guess my point here is that, even though “Mulligans” would never win an Oscar, the script was good enough to attract some moderately-top talent and, even more importantly, it kept me awake for its 92 minutes. I count on my colleague Loren McLeod for his expert opinions on films of this genre. Loren is an actor who has appeared in several films, albeit some of them…ahem, “erotic” in nature, as well as some more mainstream efforts. Loren said of “Mulligans” that “…the

film script is generally strong, the direction steady and often inspired, and the cast is strong.” He wasn’t as enthusiastic about Charlie David. “Every other actor was pitch-perfect, which made David’s performance seem weaker.” Oh, pshaw, I say. But that’s what makes a ballgame, I guess (not that I know much, if anything, about ballgames). In addition to writing reviews for my website, Loren is also, more importantly to him, an animal rights advocate and activist, working with the Superior Mutts no-kill Doggie Rescue in the great city of Orlando, FL (http://www. petfinder.com/shelters/FL500.html). He sends me the saddest stories and pics. It makes me want to throw in a tearjerker movie. Gay-themed, of course. t

Gary pointed out the changing bar culture; a different type of camaraderie and the scaling-down of the social scene. “The number of gay bars in the city is shrinking,” he said. “There used to be about 50.” Now you can count them on two hands. He’s right. With the number of habitués at gay-every-night bars (and restaurants) dwindling, so does the viability of these businesses. Many of the GLBT clientele are content to circulate in heterosexual hangouts or bring their straight friends or colleagues to gay/lesbian-owned-and-operated establishments. Even the fundamental function of gay bars as cruise-oriented, pickup places has changed. “With the internet, and sites like Manhunt, you don’t even have to leave the house,” Gary said. That’s been good for business. “And, as part of the hotel, we get straight people for drinks or lunch.” He estimated about 80 percent of the straight clientele are okay with it being a gay bar. “Though we don’t get a lot of women,” he said. Deb Norman has successfully persevered since she opened her Rue de l’Espoir in 1976 at 99 Hope Street in Providence. “I got out of college with a degree in psychology. I got a job and couldn’t make enough money to have an apartment.” “My brother told me, ‘there’s a brand new, hip bar opening downtown.’ So I got a job as a cocktail waitress, and immediately fell in love with the business.” “I liked the money, the hours, the people, the energy. It was always busy, and I was meeting new people all the time. It was just a lot of fun.” “At some point I met somebody. We were really young. We said, ‘We can do this.’ So in 1975 I borrowed $5000; $1000 from five different people. We’ve been together ever since.” The “ever since” means 31 years (five of which they’ve been married). John, the cook, and Jim, the gardener; the couple is a match made in epicurean heaven and their restaurant (64 Green Street), which they opened in 1990, represents the two men’s staid and serious attitude about food. Always very fresh, the kitchen uses locally grown produce (usually from their own garden) and organic sources for meat and cheeses, so the menu varies with the seasons. With the food in the forefront, it was never billed as an entertainment venue, never mind gay. But clearly Jim and John are patrons of the arts, and not just those of the culinary bent. A shift in priorities for their patrons has required a shift in the services they provide in order to prevail profitably. What does that mean for our favorite social venues? We’ll check in again in another, say, 20 years from now. Meanwhile, let’s thank the pros with the motivation, and the methods, that keep on giving us a gay ol’ time. t

sity of Massachusetts’ station. But neither Maguire nor Demian was a media professional and worked only their specific shows–both were involved in other work outside of radio –unlike their closeted on-air talent. These days, Mary Breslauer is best known for her long-time political work with the Human Rights Campaign and co-hosting “One in Ten,” a show on WFNX aimed at the GLBT community, but Breslauer was not out when she once worked for a small commercial station on Martha’s Vineyard before all the political stuff began to happen. “In the early days (of the 1980s), gay radio didn’t have much of an impact,” said Breslauer, 59. “But then, WFNX made a commitment with One in Ten, and it really fit with an alternative radio station.” Ironically, Breslauer’s signature show came about after she left the mainstream media to enter the political world. She served as Gerry Studds’ press secretary in his 1984 US Senate campaign, then worked in various positions at the State House and in press-relations work during the rest of that decade before getting the chance to co-host (with the late Michael Smith) the groundbreaking show. Stephen Mindich, the owner of
Our Media Icons WFNX, came up with the idea and the show, the first gay/lesbian show on a commercial outlet, went on the air in 1992 and is still a staple of the FM station’s programming. Breslauer, who stayed on for five years, had been a co-host of another GLBT show, “The Agenda,” on XM satellite radio before it went off the air last January. But her initial gay show resonated with her audience. “It’s interesting–once every few months someone will ask me, ‘Are you the Mary Breslauer on One in Ten?’ It’s usually a person in their 30s who were looking for anything gay on the radio when they were growing up. One in Ten was their window to the LGBT world.” As Breslauer and One in Ten were establishing themselves on the FM dial, one of the AM side’s most famous personalities in Boston was about to reveal that he was both gay and a person with AIDS. Throughout the 1980s, as AIDS was taking a horrific toll, many gay

As the affliction was fought on personal, political and educational fronts, one of Boston’s most well-known radio personalities used his AIDS-related illness as an impetus to come out both as gay and as a person with HIV. In 1994, WBZ’ David Brudnoy, the host of Boston’s most popular nighttime talk show, was suffering from HIV-related illnesses and told a Globe reporter that he was gay. I’m also tall and lean and I’m not very good at basketball, but very good at music.,” said Brudnoy to the Globe. “I’m not trying to compare sexuality with skill, only to say that I’m not comfortable with the notion of defining people exclusively or overwhelmingly by what they do in bed.” Brudnoy, who passed away in 2004, had been a fixture on Boston radio and TV for nearly three decades and wrote for National Review, the conservative magazine, and several othJohnny Diaz of the Boston Globe

His coming out was a national story, partly because he was a well-known conservative commentator and also with WBZ reaching 38 states, Brudnoy had a far-flung audience and callers to his show. Reporting on AIDS had become an integral part of a newspaper’s daily coverage, and it was during the height of the epidemic that Renee Graham started working at the Globe “Certainly, the Globe covered its share of gay/lesbian issues, but when I got there, the primary issue was AIDS,” said Graham. “And I think the Globe’s coverage of AIDS was among the best of any mainstream newspaper in the country, and I had the chance to work on quite a few myself.” Graham’s tenure at the paper bridged the gap between an era when being openly gay was still, at best, touch and go. Upon her arrival at Morrissey Boulevard in 1988, as a news reporter, she underwent an amusing and unofficial “gay Globe” baptism. “When I first came to the Globe, my desk mate was a lesbian, and within my first month, she and her partner (who did not work at the Globe) invited me to their home for dinner. I still think of it as my lesbian orientation,” said Graham. “Over lasagna and wine, she ran down the names of all the gay and lesbian folks at

the Globe. She did everything short of giving me a seating chart. It was extremely helpful, and in retrospect, rather funny.” It took only three years for Graham, who had since transferred to the Living/Arts department, to open up about herself. “Coming out at work wasn’t really on my agenda. Being a black woman in Boston, I felt I already had enough to deal with, and frankly, I just wanted to do my job with as little friction as possible,” Graham said. “Certainly, some gay folks pegged me as gay early on, but I didn’t really come out until about 1991 when I wrote an essay about Tea Dance at the Boatslip in Provincetown, and especially a year later when I wrote an appreciation memorializing the great Audre Lorde.” Graham’s 700-word story about the iconic author concluded: “Because of Audre Lorde, we–as African-Americans, as women, and as lesbians–will never again go gently into anyone’s damn good night.” “My editor pulled me aside and asked if I really wanted to say “we,” since that would include me. And I said, “Sure, why not?” The piece ran as I wrote it, and the reaction was extraordinary. Al-
Our Media Icons though I never had any formal coming out conversations with bosses or co-workers, I kind of became staff lesbian after that. I even received a letter addressed to “Renee Graham, Staff Lesbian,” which I found hilarious.” It wasn’t the only bizarre piece of mail she received: “I had one letter linking the G’s in Graham, Globe and Gay with such clever lunacy I had it up at my desk for years–but hey, at least they were reading my stuff.” Graham, 47, left the Globe in 2005 and now serves as pop culture correspondent for WBUR and still writes freelance book reviews for the Globe; her Kay Longscope fulltime job is as a staff writer for Suffolk University Alumni Magazine. Prior to Graham, the Globe’s only out reporter had been Kay Longcope, who started at the paper in 1970 as a religion writer but soon began to cover the fledgling gay political movement and also wrote many stories of interest to gay/lesbian readers while a member of the Living/Arts staff. ton reporters for their work in 1986, and when Barney Frank came out, he gave his first interview to Longcope because she was comfortable as the Globe’s first openly gay reporter, the paper said. But even when Graham and Longcope decided to hold brunches for gay/lesbian Globe employees a few years later, the newsroom atmosphere still precluded openness. “She knew a few people, I knew a few people who knew a few more people, and on it went. If we sent e-mails at all, they were pretty coded because not everyone was out at the time, and it seemed an awfully silly way to out someone,” said Graham. Longcope left the Globe in 1992, and moved to her native Texas, where she founded the Texas Triangle, a newspaper geared toward the GLBT community. She succumbed to cancer in 2007 at the age of 69; in her honor, NLGJA established a $5,000 college scholarship in her name. Longcope and Graham helped pave the way for younger Globe reporters, but whether to be out never was an option for Emily Sweeney, who has spent her entire career redefining a journalist’s personal style. Sweeney’s look–her hair has been styled at various times as a mohawk, spiked up,
Our Media Icons or fade in a range of colors, and her attire has included bowties and caps–is far removed from the stereotype of a buttoneddown reporter. “I guess I break the mold of what people picture a typical reporter* would look like,” said Sweeney, a Dorchester native who wears “DOT RAT” tattooed across her back. “Thankfully, the way I dress has never been a problem for me on the job.” And while she has received nothing but positive feedback on her reporting from her colleagues, Sweeney, 33, has garnered some negative attention–an anonymous postcard from someone saying he didn’t understand “dykes,” and her 2006 inclusion on an antigay website for a story on shopping for a home with Lauralee Summers, who she married in 2006 as so noted by an announcement in the New York Times. “ Media propaganda: pushing the agenda in the real estate section–by hardcore activist Globe reporter ... But this isn’t really about real estate. It’s actually about normalizing lesbian “marriage.” Looking at the pictures, Emily is clearly the “man” of the house. she wears a butch haircut, man’s clothes, uses a hammer, and sports tattoos,” stated www.calltodecision.com. Ironically, Sweeney is nothing if not the antithesis of an activist reporter. She is the president of the New England chapter of the Society of professional Journalists, serving a second term after first being elected in 2002. Diaz, either; he arrived at the Globe with a resume that included appearances on MTV’s “The Real World” as the boyfriend of Dan Renzi when the show was based in Miami. “I was always being asked (in Miami) about the show and what went on. My homosexuality was embraced and celebrated. In fact, when Gianni Versace was killed by Andrew Cunanan in July 1997, the managing editors and news editors of The Miami Herald specifically asked me to work on the gay angles of the reporting because they knew I was gay, out and about, and that I could better navigate the gay club scene and community. I was a cub reporter then and the story was one of the highlights of my career,” he said. In Boston, it’s been much of the same kind of success. Diaz covers television but also has written about the GLBT community, both for the Globe and as a fiction writer. His first novel, “Boston Boys Club,” was a huge hit and established a new genre of writing known as “Chico Lit.” Two more novels have followed. With gay men and lesbians not only estab-

And maybe the residual memories of three decades ago are what steers White as she reaches for the TV clicker. “I was thinking, why did I watch Channel 7 for the news? It was Randy Price, a real top-notch guy, and he’s gay, too,” she said. “I watched him when he was at WBZ, too.”“We have to sink or swim together.” t Judy Van Handle worked at the Boston Globe for 27 years and is a co-founder of the Boston chapter of the National Lesbian/Gay Journalists Association.

My partner wanted to spend our more mature years in a balmy climate around white sandy beaches with warm ocean water. We also desired a laidback but urbane environment, but all with a comparatively low cost of living. After searching the entire country, we settled on St. Pete and never looked back. I focus on the specific needs of my senior or soon-to-be retired clients. Whether you prefer a cottage in the gay-friendly historic Kenwood neighborhood of central St. Pete, or a villa in the nation’s first gay retirement community (15 miles south of St. Pete), I’ll find the right place for you.
