As you, our readers, will remember, from a previous scribbling in this fine publication, we discussed some film celebrities whose sexual orientation you might not have been aware of. Even if we’d like to, who can forget the visual of the romance between Marjorie Main and Spring Byington. But I digress. Anyway, I was reminded of that when, this past holiday season, I was presented for Christmas with the paperback edition of “Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars.” The writer is Scotty Bowers, who was a former Marine who, while working at a gas station in Hollywood, became a…well…Madame of sorts for many of the closeted celebrities of the time. Of course, none of these celebs are alive to dispute any of the facts (although the lover of Raymond Burr did confirm that he first met the rotund star of “Perry Mason” thru a set-up by Bowers), and many of his disclosures will prompt a startling “Huh??” from readers. During his…er, “career,” which began in 1946, Bowers set up hundreds, perhaps thousands, of “meetings” for the Hollywood elite, beginning with…are you ready…actor Walter Pidgeon, who propositioned Bowers at the pump by offering him a 20-dollar bill. Walter Pidgeon! Who knew? And it wasn’t just for gay men that he provided this service. The book tells of his encounters with Katherine Hepburn 8 savoirflairmagazine
(not a big surprise), Vivien Leigh (again, no biggie, as she was notoriously wacko), and Rita Hayworth (really!). Oh- and Edith Piaf and Gloria Swanson! Not only did Bowers play matchmaker for these celebs, he himself was an active participant, being quite the hunk himself (hey,
who would turn down a former Marine!). It wasn’t just the Hollywood celebs who partook of his services…he also mentions the Duke of Windsor and “the woman he loved,”
Wallis Simpson, with whom Bowers claimed to have had a threesome. He mentions that the former King Edward VIII gave up his throne and married Simpson as a cover for his homosexuality. I’m not making this up (though one wonders just how much of all this is factual). Cary Grant was one of his clients. Grant has always had the rumor of being gay (or at least bi), and lived with fellow actor Randolph Scott for many years. In fact, famed Hollywood fashion journalist Blackwell more than suggested that Grant and Bowers himself were “madly in love.” Bowers ran this “business” from the back room of the gas station. How and why the owners of this station never found out about his exploits is not explained. He finally quit the gas-pumping business in 1950, but continued his madameing for the next 20 years. He also provided services to Desi Arnaz! Ricky Ricardo used a pimp! Well, it’s not really fair to call Bowers a pimp, as he claims he never took any money for his services. “I am not a pimp,” he says. He did, however, accept payment when he himself was providing the services. Hey, a guy’s gotta make a buck. Bowers continued to do his business into the 1980s, the beginnings of the AIDS epidemic. He’s now in his late 80s, married (he claims to be mostly straight…uh-huh) to his wife of almost 30 years. The book, from Grove Press, is a fascinating and quick read, perfect for a summer day by the pool at the Boatslip in P-town.

And the Gay Men who Love Them An Interview with Yankee Car Club Member Bill Barnert by Nick Anderson Every Fall Provincetown brims with excitement when restored antique cars roll in for the Provincetown Car Show & Parade weekend (in September the weekend after Labor Day). The event is organized by the Yankee Car Club, a gay, antique automobile club with over 30 chapters nationwide. Bill Barnert is a longtime friend of Savoir Flair and a club member. He took some time to answer some of our questions about the Club when we ran into him in Provincetown.

The Yankee Chapter of the Lambda Car Club International (LCCI) was founded in 1981. LCCI has over 2,200 members in both the United States and Canada. All members share a similar passion for anything automotive. Lambda Car Club International started as the Gay Old Car Owners Society based in New York City. Since then, Lambda has continued to expand through local and invitational events. Ownership of a classic car is not requiredfor membership. Being part of the Yankee Car Club is a great way to be social within the lgbt community. NA: How long have you been a member? WB: About five or six years. NA: What is your role in the Yankee Car Club? WB: I’m just a regular member. I helped organize one of the events at the Provincetown weekend this past year, but other than that, I just show up & have fun.

Classic Cars Nick Anderson + Bill Barnert Q & A NA: Tell us about your car. WB: My car is fairly rare, and somewhat odd in design. She really stands out in a crowd (or a parade). She’s a 1956 Nash Ambassador Super - I call it the Rambler’s big brother, ‘cause most people have heard of the Rambler even if they haven’t heard of the rest of the Nash family. NA: How did you get involved with the YCC? WB: I bought my Nash about five or six years ago from a Yankee member in Rhode Island, and joined right after.

Classic Cars Nick Anderson + Bill Barnert Q & A NA: Why is there a specific club for gays? WB: Why not? There’s gay volleyball, and softball, and bowling, and just about every other sport or hobby you can think of. It’s fun to hang around with gays with cars! NA: What are some of the events hosted or attended by YCC? WB: Our biggest event is the annual Provincetown Car Show & Parade weekend (in September the weekend after Labor Day). In addition we host an annual holiday dinner, a Spring New Members (& others) Brunch, occasional parties, and we attend several Car Shows & Cruise Nights together, like the Codman Estate show in Lincoln, MA, the OgunquitFest, the Endicott Estate show in Dedham, and others. This summer, we were invited to participate as a group in

the Boston Pride Parade, and I hope that continues as a tradition. We’ve provided the convertibles for the dignitaries for years, but it was nice to also drive as a group. Of course, we missed the events after the parade, ‘cause we had no place to park all those cars, so we went to Charlestown for brunch! NA: Is the club open to women? WB: Absolutely! We often LOOK like an all-male club, but we have, and welcome, women, too. NA: Who is a typical YCC member? WB: Hard to say - we all come to the club through different ways. Not even everyone owns a classic car! NA: What is it about older cars that is appealing? WB: For me, it’s the styling. Every Toyota, Honda or Nissan on the street today looks like they were designed by the same team. But older cars have more personality. I’m particularly fond of cars from the 50’s, and I like to take photos of my Nash in front of 50’s style diners, old buildings, etc. Car Club Parade starts in the far East End of Provincetown

Classic Cars Nick Anderson + Bill Barnert Q & A NA: What does it take to restore a car? WB: I don’t know - I keep my car maintained, but not restored. I’d guess it takes a lot of time and a lot of money. NA: What’s the most amazing restoration you’ve ever seen? WB: I saw a restoration that turned a 50’s car practically into a disco, with hydraulic suspension to move the car like it was dancing, and lights & speakers. I’d never WANT a car like that, but it was amazing. NA: What is the rarest car you or your members have seen/restored? WB: Possibly the blue Auburn that one of our members Vince Carli - drives. Editor’s note: (see photo on previous page) NA: What are some of the questions you and your members get from the public? WB: “What’s that?” “What year?” “I remember those - my dad had one!” NA: Tell us about the Provincetown events? WB: The two public events are the Car Show and the Parade, both on Saturday. Exquisite
OUTDOORliving
By Elizabeth Gormley The foundation for outdoor entertaining no longer means a slab of wood or concrete with a few rusty lawn chairs. Dining alfresco at home has been elevated way above a grimy hibachi and plastic cooler. The separate bath is not the garden hose, or even the showerhead that hooks up to the spigot on the side of the house. The options for residential open-air life have evolved to be serious models that are beautiful as much as they are functional. Decks, patios, outdoor kitchens and baths, are at their highest form, with progressive, eco-friendly materials and professionals who devote themselves to the art of their design.

Jim Finlay is the President of Archadeck of Suburban Boston. Twenty years in the deck industry has given him a rare expertise in planning, construction, and maintenance. Deck design changes with the times. That means different resources, new shapes, and keeping up with decking fads that change as the warm seasons roll in, year after year. What is trending? “Clients are interested in interesting shapes,” he said. “Not just square or rectangle, but octagons, bay-shaped—where the corners are cut, which adds interest—or a second level. How are you going to use the deck? With design of a deck, form should follow function.” Other creative deck shapes include arrowhead, piano, and oval. Patterned flooring such as herringbone and checkerboard are ultra-modern options. Multiple levels make possible an exclusive grilling or dining area, hot tub locale, and extra seating. Big decks are the rage. What is out is the small, square deck with room for a table for four. Large and tiered decks with built-in benches are meant for entertaining in this outdoor virtual “room.” Secondary decks are also growing in popularity. Think of a private nook built off the master bedroom, at the side or back of the house, lined with potted plants, stones, and a couple of meditative loungers. Building materials have progressed along with design. No longer is the ideal deck made of straight pine or cedar, both vulnerable to age and the elements. “There is an increase in interest in synthetic decking because it’s low maintenance,” Finlay said. “Wood requires yearly maintenance to look good. The best low maintenance decking—plastic-coated, etcetera—looks very good, performs real well, and is scratch-resistant, stain-resistant, mildew-resistant. You literally have to hose

it off once in awhile. But it’s more expensive, certainly.” Synthetic decking means either composite, which is a blend of wood and plastic, or polyvinyl chloride, an all-plastic construction material. Pressure-treated wood remains the most popular resource for deck construction because it is more economical than synthetics. It is more resistant to rot, termites, and age than regular wood. However, different grades of wood preservatives will dictate how long it is projected to last. Wood is particularly vulnerable in moist climates, or if it is immersed in seawater. Both synthetic and wood decking are available in recycled materials, but which one is more eco-friendly? Finlay responded, “What’s environmentally sound depends on your viewpoint. Plastics and composites are manufactured. But the argument that they’re more environmentally responsible is that they have long warranties, longer than most woods would last. If you have to replace a deck less frequently, you’re environmentally more responsible, I think.” A new deck will take anywhere from three days to four weeks to construct, depending on its size, and requires a building permit from the town. On the other hand, patios require no permit, and can be as utilitarian and aesthetically pleasing as any deck. The look and durability of materials are just as important. Also like decks, patio design is an enterprise with signature creations by artistic professionals. David Bartsch is the head of the Boston-based project management firm, David Bartsch Landscape Architecture. His impressive list of site planning includes residential patios that can only be described as breathtaking. “Some of my best inspiration comes from trying to translate the essence of some exquisite place into a different space, using different materials and scale, but always trying to achieve the magic of the original place. Most importantly, it is not a continues on next page

matter of copying those places, but distilling their successful qualities to a different setting with appropriate materials and scale,” he said. Bartsch’s patio ideas are born from bustling international cityscapes to the epitome of quiet.
26 savoirflairmagazine
“Locations could be a boulevard in Paris… like streets leading to the Opera House or the Pantheon… or some deep woods with just tree stems, carpeted with a lush green groundcover. Anyplace wonderful can provide a design origin to be expressed in a completely different setting. It is quite challenging to do well, while respecting the existing context of the new location.” As far as building materials,
the trend is moving toward the earthy. “I see a lot more use of natural stone,” he said. “It seems to be what people associate the outdoors with, good solid surfaces, even if they’re on an elevated roof deck. I think people appreciate stone because it feels more grounded. Some people go with wood, which is fine, provided it’s a good hardwood. Softer woods like pine, fir or spruce tend to give a lot of splinters.” As with decks, patio design and materials should cater to the area’s intended use. “Trex, the kind of plastic wood, can be good for a lot of purposes, like a utility area, where there might be oil stains. You wouldn’t want a finer material there.” Bartsch also creates landscape walls, which offer their own design challenges. Homeowners are often intimidated and confused about wall installation, cost, and masonry labor. Fitting a handsome stonewall around a patio is easier than many think. “There’s a misperception that a brick wall will be less expensive than what appears to be a dry-made fieldstone wall. Fieldstone walls tend to be cheaper than even a concrete wall, simply because a fieldstone wall only needs to go in this area about eighteen inches below the finished grade, whereas a solid, inflexible wall needs to go three or four feet underground with a footing.” All of us have seen dilapidated or rutted patios
OUTDOORliving
that seem to bulge here and there over time. Patios seem to be more susceptible to age and weather. However, it is the design and materials that matter with patios, that must contest the earth’s naturally shifting soil, along with sun and the elements. Bartsch explained what holds up best. “Anything but wood. Plastic certainly holds up, although that can change color with UV rays. If you were to do a retaining wall with Trex-type material, you can sometimes see it serve for ten to fifteen years. But it’s certainly not durable like stone.” continues on page 65

the Details
Photos and Text By Louis Chavez We took a look at select facades in Provincetown and Boston. Most of these exterior elements excite the eye but serve no structural purpose and reflect the time period of their construction, The Figurehead house (left) in Provincetown East End, one of the Provincetown‘s Captain’s Houses, is now a condominium complex. Note the female figure over the entrance (a figurehead from a ship) and the pineapple fence caps that symbolised hospitality in early America. This house was home to Abbie Putnam, Town Librarian from 1901 to 1935. Her claim to fame was denying fledgling playwright Eugene O’Neil a library card since he wasn’t a property owner. Years later, after he received the Pulitzer Prize, he came back intoxicated to the library to gloat which was of no consequence to Miss Putnam who threw him out unceremoniously. The figurehead was found floating in the Indian Ocean in 1867 by a whaling schooner, transported to Provincetown, and initially placed on a store overhang, then to its present day location on this stunting East End home. continues on next page

The Apple Tree Cottage named02 for the tree that once resided in the front yard has a moon-gate entrance reminiscent of the portal on a boat that perfectly frames this well kept Commercial street home. In the mid 1980s, the cottage was home to artist Carl Ramos. This gifted painter created an awe inspiring garden around the apple tree, with seasonal blooms and a charming tiger lily strewn pool. The gate was often left open so the garden could be seen by all who walked by. Carl Ramos’ untimely death in 1994 is memorized in his AIDS Memorial Quilt panel that reproduces an image of the moon gate.

This Provincetown West End House whose high pitched roof is a perfect venue for it’s playful Victorian peak decoration, was home to Vivian (Foster) De Pinna, an abstract artist and later to modernist artist Ross Moffett. The high peak is a good strategy for Cape Cod’s strong wind and wet weather.
Above; A house with horns This pottery deer head hangs off this Provincetown East End home, past home to Donald Baxter MacMillan (1874-1970), Arctic explorer, anthropologist, geographer and naturalist. Originally the barracks for the Civil War batteries at Long Point, this home was floated over from Long Point, a peninsula that parallel the shoreline. The little blue sign on the front of the building commerates this. These signs can be seen on homes along Provincetown’s Commercial street predominately in the West End. continues on next page savoirflairmagazine 31

This prestigious section of Boston was one of the first ‘gay’ neighborhoods in the 1960s-1970’s and the home of the Boston Marriage (19th and early 20th centuries to describe two women living together). Most of the iron work shown is on or near the Cabot House. An engraved name ‘Cabot’ is above the archway door at 65 Mount Vernon Street, the site where Henry Cabot Lodge, a prominent US Senator during the time of the First World War, once lived. Delight in the Details When an appreciation for skilled craftsmanship was reborn from 1897 to the 1920’s, the decorative arts became highly fashionable to the Brahmins of Beacon Hill. Such crafts as pottery, wood carving, book making, stained glass and tile making were all popular and as a result, hand forged wrought ironwork made a well deserved return to decorative and architectural applications. As a result, today, you see the streets of Beacon Hill, where the upper classes of New England once lived and worked, lined with ornamental ironwork.

“Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life.” ~ Pablo Picasso by Flavia Francesquini People come to Massachusetts for many reasons; the beautiful foliage, prestigious schools, the night life or relaxing summers at the shore. They also come to specific towns to enjoy the rare freedom of being able to walk down the street hand in hand with a loved one and not worry about discrimination. Oh, the ability of being oneself has driven many of us to pack our cars and plan romantic getaways to cool little New England towns, our own private little Meccas, the charming little places that have welcomed diversity and embraced all the letters of our beloved LGBTQ community. The common denominator is undeniably beauty, the beauty of the seasons, the beauty of old country meeting eclectic décor, the beauty of being the norm, no matter how original we may be. It is not surprising that art has become an important part of the local scene. In many cases, the artists are as exciting as their projects. Folks who have chosen to live here and dedicate most of their time coming up with new ways of sharing their talents with the world are in a class of their own. There is something special about enhancing the places we love, making our daily lives filled with pizazz and the kind of specia; energy that comes from being surrounded by beauty. continues on next page

P-town, as locals like to call it, is one of those places that make you smile whether you intended to or not. Artist and activist Jay Critchley has made it his home. Originally from Connecticut, he has been a permanent fixture in P-town’s art scene for decades now. His work is both amazing and amusing. A self proclaimed “born again artist” he didn’t start giving wings to his creativity until he was in his 30s. But once he got started, there was no holding him back. From sand-encrusted cars to historical outhouses and absolutely everything in between, very little escapes Critchley’s artistic sense. “I do everything but paint” is how he explains his art in one sentence. Critchley’s art stays with you long after you have walked away from it. Thinking is one of his desired outcomes. He wants his audience to be inspired to see past the regular parameters of daily life. He admits that there is a certain wonderment in doing so, “I like to provoke a little disturbance, I like to get you to think about something new, or perhaps something you just haven’t seen from a different angle.”
Our Artists Does the artist ever question whether an idea will actually work? How does one know how a sand encrusted motel destined to be demolished will turn out? Critchley doesn’t seem phased by such doubts, “Every project is a learning experience and it’s so exciting! I take on these jobs that require experimenting with new materials, places and concepts and I love watching people’s reactions.” His works often reflect critical social issues. He has tackled HIV, sexual/gender issues, and our relationship with the environment as it relates to climate changes, wars, or use of energy. Those who have met him would agree that his art is a direct reflection of his genius and electric personality. Three decades of shaking the status quo may also be a big part of the reason why once you witness his work, you start to look at art from a whole new perspective. However, if you desire to give your head a break and look at art that makes you wish you were sitting on a beach chair instead, you won’t be disappointed with another one of P-town’s own. John Clayton grew up outside of New Jersey but has lived in New England for the last two decades. His unique take on colors and lights evoke the desire to walk into his paintings. If I had to describe his work in one word, it would definitely be peaceful. When Clayton was about 14 years old his brother received a paint set for Christmas. Tired of seeing it sitting unused, Clayton asked if he could have it? His brother said yes and it’s been a long and

colorful journey every since. It wasn’t until 1990 that Clayton was able to take his first real art class and he had mixed feeling about his initial experiences with the brush, “I had very good teachers but the beginning was not fun. In fact, it took 30 years before I started fully enjoying what I do! The more I learned about the process of painting the less I struggled. The last six years have been absolutely great!” Perhaps because he struggled as a young artist, he has become a great teacher. His classes are sought after by people of all backgrounds. Some of his students come to him seeking to become better artists themselves by learning some of his techniques continues on page 60

Kitchen Trends
Photos and Kitchen Design by Blackdog Design Build Remodel of Amherst, New Hampshire Written by Louis Chavez Kitchen remodeling is one of the most popular updates for several reasons. First and foremost for many homeowners is the fact that updating kitchens can add resale value to the home. Second, this room sees a great deal of activity, and small inconveniences become chronic annoyances. One hot remodeling trend is simplicity. Kitchens are being streamlined. Small appliances are tucked away behind closed doors to clear counter space and add an open feeling to the kitchen. Another popular remodeling trend is the use of natural materials for countertops. Granite is one of the more expensive options, while other options include quartz, concrete, and wood. The emphasis is on ease of cleaning and maintenance, as well as durability. 42 savoirflairmagazine
According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association(NKBA), recent survey of 350 particapating members, the following are some of the top trends in kitchen and bath remodeling. Less Cherry? Cherry wood is not quite as popular as it was in previous years. While it was one of the most popular woods, along with maple, in past years taking first or second place in the NKBA surveys, there is a shift away from this rich wood. No one other wood species is taking that market share on its own, as even maple dropped in popularity this year, falling from 77 percent last year to 70 percent now. Instead, a number of lesser-used woods are being specified more often, including oak, which is specified by twice as many designers now (22 percent) versus two years ago (11 percent); walnut, which has increased from 3 percent in 2010 to 9 percent in 2011 to 13 percent today; birch, which is now specified by three times as many kitchen designers as it was a year ago (15 percent vs. 5 percent), and bamboo, which has doubled from 5 percent last year to 10 percent now. While alder is currently specified by 27 percent of kitchen designers, that figure is down from 30 percent last year and from 40 percent two years ago,
Cherry cabinetry has been a popular remodeling trend over the last ten years.
Dark is back Cabinetry trends are steadily moving toward darker finishes. 30 percent of kitchen designers have been gravitating toward light natural finishes, medium natural finishes stand at 55 percent, with dark natural finishes at 58 percent. In past years, dark natural finishes were specified by only 43 percent of designers. White, among painted cabinetry, continues to be the most popular choice, as white cabinets have been recently specified by 59 percent of NKBA member kitchen designers, while other colors were specified by only 38 percent of designers. According to NKBA distressed finishes are making a comeback. Being specified by 15 percent of designers going into 2010, that figure dropped to just 5 percent last year, but has now risen to 22 percent . continues on next page

Backsplashes of Glass Glass has been recently used by more than half of kitchen designers as a backsplash material, although glass remains a niche material for kitchen countertops, rising from 41 percent a year ago to 52 percent now. Natural stone tile is the most popular selection at 60 percent and ceramic tile (including porcelain), by some 74 percent of designers. Despite this high rate, ceramic tile backsplashes are on the decline, as they stood at 78 percent a year ago and 88 percent two years ago. Other popular backsplash are granite at 30 percent

and quartz at 20 percent. The popularity of these materials as backsplashes is due to their high use as countertop materials. Finishing off a granite or quartz countertop with a matching backsplash is quite common; however, the same doesn’t hold true for solid surfaces. While these materials are very popular for countertops, they’re seldom used for backsplashes, as they were implemented by only 11 percent of designers, according to NKBA. Energy Efficient lighting Energy-efficiency a real trend is being implemented in homes across the United States and Canada. Although the intial cost of the diode or LED bulb is far higher than a standard bulb, the increasing use of light-emitting diode, or LED, lighting is proof of this trend. Used by 50 percent of NKBA member kitchen designers entering 2010, that rate increased to 54 percent the following year and has exploded over the past year to 70 percent. However, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) aren’t sharing in this trend. Although they use roughly a quarter the energy of an incandescent bulb when producing the same amount continues on page 46

of light, measured in lumens, the poor color of the light they produce and the presence of mercury in these bulbs are keeping them out of newly remodeled kitchens, falling from 36 percent last year to 26 percent today, according to NKBA. Older incandescent bulbs stand at just 42 percent, a figure we expect to fall next year due in part to the U.S. ban on newly produced 100-watt incandescent bulbs that went into effect on Jan. 1. A ban on 75-watt incandescent bulbs is in effect as of Jan. 1, 2013, followed by 60- and 40-watt incandescent bulbs on Jan. 1, 2014. Faucets Pull-out kitchen faucets are the favored type of faucet. Viewing the large number of new pull-out faucet models at the NKBA’s Kitchen & Bath Industry Show, it’s clear these units can be seamlessly incorporated into almost any kitchen design style. While standard kitchen faucets were used by just under half of designers as 2010 approached, barely more than a third of designers have recently specified them. Meanwhile, the use of pull-out faucets has increased from 88 percent to 91 percent to 93 percent. In other words, 14 of out every 15 designers who designed a kitchen over the last three months used a pull-out faucet. These versatile models might also be mitigating the need for potfiller faucets, which have been recently specified by just 28 percent of designers, down from 41 percent two years ago, according to NKBA.

the Law& Us lgbt Legal Realities
by Flavia Francesquini “In matters of truth and justice, there is no difference between large and small problems, for issues concerning the treatment of people are all the same” Albert Einstein The LGBTQ community has had a lot to celebrate. It is not every year that we are able to elect openly gay officials as well as a great number of allies, vote to legalize same sex marriage in four states as well as reelect the first American President to publicly side with us by taking a positive stand on marriage equality. There is more to celebrate, of course, but building allies and gaining territory is huge to all of us. Regardless of sexual orientation, equality and civil rights are the basis to a well-balanced and fair society to all. In the spring of 2001 I took classes with a woman who was working on her second Bachelor’s degree. She had earned a Master’s in Education the previous year as well and had taken various courses in two different languages. It was both ironic and sad that, at that time, she could not put her amazing education into practice, as she was not allowed to work in this country. In fact, she was not allowed to live here unless she stayed in school. 48 savoirflairmagazine
the Law and Us Originally from Japan, Kyoko had come to US to attend an English course seven years earlier. Like in any good romantic comedy, she fell in love with her teacher and they were very happy… until they realized they couldn’t be together. Kyoko’s visa only allowed her to stay here for the duration of her course. Although she would have gladly married her girlfriend at the time, same-sex marriages were still years away and there was nothing they could do as a couple to stop Kyoko from being deported. That is, unless she continued to renew her student visa. For several years they researched possibilities, all the while Kyoko became very well versed in the educational system of this country. They were finally able to marry in 2004, ten years after they’d met, but they are still waiting for the laws that will allow Kyoko to become an American citizen through marriage. Although she has been able to acquire a work permit, her situation
is still unstable and the couple dread thinking that they may be separated if Kyoko becomes unable to renew her current visa through her job. In 2005 Kyoko’s wife gave birth to their child using artificial insemination. Due to financial strain the couple have not been able to finalize their son’s co-adoption and Kyoko’s situation is further jeopardized by this fact. Should their relationship end, Kyoko would have no legal rights to the child she’s raised since birth. Because their case is so delicate and Kyoko’s employer is very conservative, they have allowed me to tell their story but not to use their real names or pictures. I hate to point out the obvious but a heterosexual couple would’ve ended these problems before they even started with a trip to the court house and a couple of signatures on a marriage license. continues on next page

continued from previous page For all those who wonder why the right to marry is such a big deal, let me begin by saying that whether or not you have any intention of ever getting married, living in a country whose laws cater to that desire is not only affirming, it’s liberating. Having the law on your side sounds a lot like a cliché but ask anyone who has been discriminated against and chances are you will hear a very good argument as to why we should continue to fight so that our causes help to balance out the scales of justice. Our next big step will be to overturn DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act. This law, passed in 1996 is very discriminating in ways that affects the entire LGBT community. It permits unequal treatment of same-sex couples under federal law. In fact, it not only allows states to ignore same-sex unions obtained in other states, but it ensures that same-sex couples are not eligible to over 1,100 federal benefits and protections. Since Massachusetts got the ball rolling in 2004, other states have followed suit: Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont and Washington. California recognizes same-sex marriages performed there before the passage of Proposition 8. However, DOMA has allowed the fed-

eral government to deny equal rights at a larger scale. In short, now that we have all screamed and shouted about the unfairness attached to DOMA – and its defenders – the Supreme Court has been asked to decide whether or not this law is constitutional. It is scheduled to start procedures in March and we should have a decision by June of 2013. This ruling will impact various aspects of our lives, whether we are married or not. Matthew Cameron, an East Boston criminal defense attorney who also specializes on immigration issues is very excited with the perspective of helping binational samesex couples. He is optimistic that laws will change this summer, “It is unconstitutional to have the LGBT community treated this way. They cannot be prevented civil rights and that’s what DOMA does. You drop DOMA and everyone benefits.” Cameron adds, “The consequences [of being allowed to marry] are much deeper than tax breaks, there is so much more at stake for some families.” Cameron points out that even some of the more conservative and catholic countries, such as Brazil, have began to allow same-sex marriages. He sees it as a positive step, “Judges here can tell which way the wind is blowing and it’s just a matter of time before we step up.” The consequences for couples struggling with immigration issues would be an incredible relief then. As it is now, American citizens in same-sex relationships – unlike heterosexual couples - are not allowed to extend citizenship, or even legal residency to their partners. While the immigrant spouse can seek other types of visas and work permits, it is often a long and troublesome process. Attorney Christine J. Klein, who practices in Hawthorne, NY advises clients that since each state has different laws regarding marriage and other family matters, anyone entering a legally binding situation should do so with very realistic and educated expectations. Doing your homework before signing any papers is a good idea regardless of how much you believe is at stake. Think that bringing up a prenuptial agreement will damper the romance? Klein has a different view, “If you truly love someone you will want to sign papers that will ensure things are fair in case the relationship ends. People don’t tend to make fair decisions when they are angry.” Along with the right to marry comes the right to divorce and one should expect the unexpected. Klein gives an interesting example, “Equal distribution of property is a shady area, for instance. A couple may have been together for 20 years but they were only married for two years. During divorce proceedings the judge will take into account only the last two years. You can see where trouble could arise.” Having a child is usually a joyful occasion but it is also a decision that we can only hope everyone would consider as carefully as most LGBT parents. Whether they are adopted, conceived through artificial insemination or surrogacy, there are risks and expenses associated with them. Klein points out that before you look for a surrogate you should make sure that your state allows surrogacy or more time, paperwork – and a competent attorney - will be necessary. Adopting has become a little harder now that some countries have closed their doors to single parents. Klein explains, “No single-parent adoption means no gay couples because most of
these countries don’t even recognize same-sex marriages. In the past it was possible for one person to adopt and their partner to co-adopt later, but restricting adoptions to legally married couples has also restricted our community from adopting.” As for domestic adoptions it depends both on the state and the agency. Having a gay-friendly worker may be a deal breaker in many instances. In either case Klein strongly recommends co-adoption, “For instance, if a spouse is artificially inseminated the husband is considered the legal father. In New York this law has been extended to same-sex parents but it is not true for other states. Adoptions on the other hand, are court ordered and must be respected in every state. Why must every aspect of our lives be defined by who society allows us to be? Some of us can look back at our ancestors and reflect on who they were and who they could’ve been if they hadn’t been restricted by the norms of their generations. Like gold fish, who will only grow as big as the bowl they live in, so are we restrained by our own laws and regulations. But behold our natural need to expand beyond our limits, our desire to grow beyond our surroundings is what has allowed us to do so over the years. As we start another year, may we all bear witness to change but more importantly, may we all contribute to it. by Louis Chavez with Sharon Levine Maine same sex weddings are happening at long last. Approved by voters, 53-47 percent, on November 6, 2012, same-sex marriage in Maine is now legal by popular vote. Same-sex couples will be legally able to marry beginning December 29, 2012. What makes this really special is the 2012 referendum was a reversal of action on a similar bill three years earlier. On May 6, 2009, a bill to allow same-sex marriage was signed into law, by the Governor following legislative approval. Opponents of the bill successfully petitioned for a referendum before the law went into ef-

fect; voters rejected the law on November 3, 2009 in a “people’s veto.” Until the referendum result rejected the law, it appeared that Maine would be the first U.S. state to legalize same-sex marriage through the legislative process with a governor’s signature, rather than following a judicial ruling.
The current passage is great news for the LGBT community in Maine and it’s great news for the Northeast. Maine is a fantastic location for both the native LGBT community marriage seekers but also, as many heterosexual couples can attest, a fabulous destination wedding location. The unspoiled beauty of the state makes for a dynamic backdrop for a beautifully orchestrated destination wedding. It’s also amazingly reasonable for the price conscious compared to Massachusetts and New York. Here are some terrific tips to make your same sex wedding a Marvelous Maine event. Portland has in town hotels with ballrooms suitable for the most sophisticated wedding. If ocean-side weddings are your thing, elegant Kennebunkport, LGBT resort area Ogunquit, spectacular Mount Desert Island among other locations at the water’s edge offer coastal islands and the crashing surf of the Atlantic as your backdrop. Small towns like Wells (Village by the Sea) even offer affordable resort weddings near the ocean! For those who prefer the country, Maine presents many choices from an elegant, intimate country inn on scenic Moosehead Lake in Greenville to a dynamic contemporary ski resort like Saddleback. Boys and girls camps are great places for late spring or fall foliage season weddings. Some campgrounds and outdoor centers offer eco-friendly options for those interested in a green wedding. Maine also has inland conference centers that feature up-to-date banquet facilities! Being able to teach requires a whole different set of skills, one that does not come automatically with being good at the subject at hand but with being able to accurately explain the mechanisms of a complex process. Clayton’s work has graced P-town galleries for nearly twenty years. Taking one of his pieces home is like carrying home a piece of a beloved scenery, or a snapshot of a great vacation moment or a token of a calming combination of colors. His work has an effect so calming that one of his collections has been bought by a major hospital with the intent of helping its

Tattoo artist Suze – no last name necessary - can be found at the Hourglass, a studio for those who prefer to keep their art work near at all times. lot more popular with the main stream. We no longer associate tattoos with sailors and motorcycle gangs. Today we have grown used to seeing beautiful ink on business folks and soccer moms alike. Suze has kept up with the changes but she is also well aware that not everyone shares the same views on what it means to be a walking work of art. “There are still people out there who think we are uneducated or that we have no moral standards. It’s something that we deal with in different ways but what I like to do is simply let people get to know who I am and slowly shatter their preconceived ideas.” Suze adds, “I love what I do and I can’t imagine doing anything else.” Suze can tattoo pretty much anything you desire to have on your body, although she has a simple rule about names, “Tattooing mates’ names is something I prefer not to do. I am not a judgmental person but I know a bad idea when I see it.” She also plays by

the rules when it comes to making sure her equipment is always sterilized and up to date. But perhaps what makes Suze so good at what she does is that she considers it a life long commitment to. Improving her craft. “The day I start thinking that I have learned everything there is to learn about tattooing I’ll retire, because I know that I won’t be giving the best tattoo that I can give. There is no such a thing as knowing everything there is to know about tattoos.” Suze started her apprenticeship in very good hands. Under the careful tutelage of Chi Chi Gunz and Ray Jerez she received excellent foundation and has only improved from there. If you travel west from the shore you will inevitably arrive at New England’s own little happy, LGBT spot, Northampton, home to wonderful art and, of course, artists. Of all the wonderful array of incredibly diverse artists you can find in this quirky little town, no one encompasses the concept of multi media quite like Karen Dolmanisth. Watching Karen at work is in itself something one should experience. Her exquisite concepts and installations are the perfect balance between nature and fantasy. Entire rooms filled with natural elements, shells, sand, leaves, wood are displayed in such awe inspiring manner that one can’t help but wonder just how one woman has thought of so many intensely beautiful combinations. A native of Wisconsin, Dolmanisth started out as a traditional artist, who followed an unusual path throughout her career. During high school she was living in Connecticut and commuting to New York City to attend art classes that were being funded by the Talented Student Fund. By the age of 17 she had moved to NY full time where she furthered her studies before coming to Western Mass and completing her Master of Fine Arts. An outstanding scholar both in the classroom and out, Dolmanisth attributes the years she spent in NY to having opened up her mind to new ideas, “NY in the 70s was so avante guard, there was an ‘openness’ to new perspectives. So much was happening that planted seeds of inspiration and excitement while I was being taught very traditional stuff!” The combination of classic and new concepts contributed to her self-discovery as an artist and ini- Karen Dolmanisth; “First Language, Immanence and Interpenetration” continues on next page

tiated her in the then brand new genre of multi media and installations. She was part of the movement that created the vocabulary now used by artists in the field. “Back then we were playing with words to describe what we were developing. Now when I say that I am a performance artist, or that I produce environmental art a lot of people have at least an idea of what I’m talking about. My generation started this movement and I was a part of that!” Dolmanisth just finished a twomonth project at Amherst College where she worked in collaboration with musicians and dancers. She is scheduled to produce an installation in India and is looking forward to learning about their traditional art forms as well. As I look out of the window I am struck by the beauty of my own piece of New England. We are lucky to be surrounded by natural diversity, the rivers, mountains, valleys, and the majestic Atlantic. But you don’t have to enjoy the outdoors to appreciate Massachusetts at its best. If it is true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, perhaps we do live in a magical place where we become the beholders of something extra special. It is a conundrum whether the incredible artists here are drawn to this area because of its charm or whether their amazing talents is what make our hometowns so beautiful. Whatever the answer, I hope we can all take the chance to slow down and enjoy our surroundings in this year. The philosophy of most patio and landscape designers, Bartsch said, is one of conservation and thoughtful execution. “I think using stone is very environmentally friendly, provided it is a local source, and the less quarrying that’s required, the better. Fieldstone is generally found on or near the surface of the ground. You know, plastic materials, people kind of cringe at the thought of them, but they’re good if they’re 100% recycled. We’re big into the sustainability thing as landscape architects. It’s in our DNA. If people could reuse more, recycle more, just use less, that’s the way it should go.” With the groundwork laid out for outdoor living, naturally what comes next is the proximity of food and drink. Cooking outdoors has moved far beyond the three-legged Weber. Outdoor kitchens, complete with sinks, gas or charcoal grills, and refrigerators, are ideal on a patio surface rather than a deck because far fewer structural modifications are needed for appliance and counter installation. An outdoor kitchen should be near the house for concontinues on next page

venience. However, designs can be creative enough so it is not visible from the house, giving the area both privacy and novelty. Deb Bishop, a Boston-area remodeling specialist for over twenty-five years, has designed two outdoor kitchens. “One of the kitchens was completely exposed, and so a large, shelter fieldstone was set into cement,” she said. “The kitchen looked like it was floating on its own. But there was no plumbing in that particular kitchen. It was more cooking, cabinets and storage. The other kitchen was more set under a trellis, like a gazebo kind of thing. It’s outside, but it did have some running water and some cooking. The water would be turned off because it’s New England, and in the wintertim water would freeze and the pipes wouldn’t burst in the offseason.” Materials for outdoor kitchens, particularly in New England, must be hardy.

“Cement or stonework,” Bishop advised. “I’ve seen some in California where it’s more set with wood, with the temperatures not as harsh as they are here. As far as the outside around here goes, most of my experience has been with stainless steel, or teak, or things set in cement or stonewalls, where it’s going to be a permanent kind of situation. Barbeques, cabinets, sinks, refrigerators, beer taps, are stainless steel.” Running power from the house to a

far-off kitchen will result in excavation. It should be taken into consideration that it might disrupt the yard to install gas, electric, and possibly phone lines to the outdoor kitchen. An outdoor kitchen placed directly on the side of the house won’t need excavation trenches, and the house itself can provide shelter for the appliances. Outdoor baths are the final way to indulge outside the house. This extravagance can mean anything from a slatted teak shower to a lavish bathhouse with seating and a changing room. Design often takes after the surroundings. An actual bathtub or spa may be in the midst of a garden. A curved, textured tile shower may draw its inspiration from nearby ocean waves.

For privacy and aesthetics, bathing sites should face open spaces such as mountains, farmland or the sea. Jean Verbridge is Principal of the Beverly, MA landscape architecture and design firm, Siemasko + Verbridge. She talked about blending bath concept with its setting. “Our preferred purpose is to make it as natural as we can make it,” she said. “A lot of the buy-off-the-shelf cedar or redwood and acrylic tubs, our preference is to put them in-ground, surround them with natural fieldstone, natural bluestone, and make the interior of them a dark color so they blend in with the environment. [We do] that much more than try to make them glitzy and fancy.” Sustainably harvested woods are often utilized, but they should be treated periodically for mildew. Stone floors and walls are less maintenance. Bluestone or tumbled river rock will be smoothest and most comfortable on bare feet. “We usually do end up using mahogany and that’s because it’s just so durable, or we use cypress. We say to use local woods as much as you can. The less any material has to travel around, the more environmentally friendly it
OUTDOORliving
is. Buy local, we say the same thing about stones. We’re in New England. There’s a lot of beautiful old granite fieldstone. It’s been re-purposed, so they’re ripping it off of huge lots somewhere. Giant stone yards collect all the old stones, so we can go hand-select materials, which is pretty great. We avoid non-naturally occurring material.” The options for upgrading outdoor living spaces have trended toward the smart, durable, and environmentally sound. Recycled composites fuse with natural woods that can construct a multi-tiered or mod-shaped deck. The mood of a stone patio is drawn from the imagined geometry of a Parisian boulevard meeting a quiet green forest. Cooking outside means trusted, sturdy kitchen appliances are as accessible as the grass and trees. Bathing is stepping into water supported and surrounded by natural resources, inspired by the view. Creative design conforms to nature to make exceptional spaces for modern outdoor life.

Then we line up & drive from one end of Commercial Street to the other, and the street is lined with viewers. To make a whole weekend out of it, we start with a Friday morning driving event at Herring Cove, where people compete in crazy ways like blindfolding the driver & having the passenger give directions. Saturday after the Parade, we have an Ice Cream & Pool Party, and Saturday night is the banquet, where we hand out the awards. There are other informal events scattered through the weekend, ending with Brunch on Sunday. NA: Do you think there’s a connection between masculinity and cars? WB: Oh, I don’t know. But maybe that’s why lesbians are better at fixing their cars!!! NA: Is it better to go on a date with a gay car club member or non-car club member? WB: I think non-members are more impressed by the cars! The parade spans the whole length of Commercial Street

Classic Cars Nick Anderson + Bill Barnert Q & A NA: Have any of your club members’ cars been in any films/done any modeling for print etc.? WB: Yes. I remember when one member rented his car as a background car to a movie, and they decided they wanted to see it move, so he got to drive it & be in the film. I came close to having my car in a film this summer, but at the last minute, they didn’t need it. I’m still on the list, though, so maybe I’ll get a call someday. NA: Can people use the cars for weddings or can people rent the cars from members? WB: My Nash was the limo for two of the members when they got married (they joined as a couple). That’s really between the renter and the individual members. The club as a club does not rent cars. Left: Bill with his Nash For more information on the Yankee Car Club see www.yankeelcc.com
