Desire

Lines

Introduction

In this research book i show and explain my journey into a new field that i have found fascinating- how we, as humans, make choices in order to arrive to our POINT of destination in the most comfortable and easiest way. What methods and approaches we use to filter the possibilities and how we employ them in our lives. How we get from point A to point B using an imaginary projection LINE- choice that often justifies any wrongdoing in our minds.

Througout this book- a man/ a woman/ human is represented as a POINT.

A

A line is the track made by moving point . . . It is created by movement- specifically through the destruction of the intense, self- contained repose of the point.

Wassily Kandinsky

line 1 |līn| noun 1 a long, narrow mark or band 2 a straight or curved continuous extent of length without breadth 3 “breadthless length” 4 a line marking the starting or finishing point

point |point| noun 1 the tapered, sharp end of a tool, weapon, or other object 2 a dot or other punctuation mark, in particular a period 3 point could also be defined as a sphere which has a diameter of zero.

To understand a desire line or POINT i had to learn where do they start- where do they end, what do they consist of and most of all- what it is? I learned that lines ( in mathematics) usually are continuous movement of a point. Point is also a beginning of a journeypoint A to point B. Here are few examples of POINTS that depict beginning or end of a journey. DESTRUCTIVE points made me realize that the fastest route is never the right one.

Destructive points stay as a reminder that the fastest route is never 100% right.

Desire en route. Since we are complicated human beings- there is no such “perfect” order in this world. That’s why we need chaos to progress. As long as we posses basic instincts of survival and existence, we will always desire the best and fastest.

Does the grey centre square appear darker than its grey surround? It is our eyes and brain that worked together and make it look darker, but in fact the grey value of both the centre square and its surround are identical.

Most of us take vision for granted. Our perception is not always perfect. Sometimes brain will interpret a static image on the retina in more than one way. Most of us don’t normally notice the difficulties associated with vision, becouse our brain automatically resolves them for us. Desire lines and this brain function have something in common- to make things or situations seem less complicated.

Our eyes create “desire lines when we view this picture, they trick our eyes, brain and our understanding into believing that there are grey circles between the black squares.

Desire lines not only exist in the form of a short- cut, but also in our vision. They determine how we see things around- how our eyes and brain adapt the image for us to understand it easier.

+ + + As a developed community we tend to make complicated things work for us in a more simple way. We tend to simplify our choices in order to get faster and more convenient routes for our peace of mind.

Desire lines also exist in design around us. There exist numerous speculative theories about how design (graphic/ arts/ advertising/ film/ music/ consumer products, etc. ) should be delivered and what choices should be considered when working on a piece of design. Colour theories, methodologies, layers, contrast, grid, pattern, time and motion, etc. Designers often are overwhelmed about their design choices for their creations- but little do they know what people really want to see- and most important- HOW they see it

Why do people get tattoos?

A tattoo artist once philosophized- when one is tatooed, one is concquerring inner fear and overcoming it- thus becomes a better person.

but all this is just a myth

Life is suffering first noble truth. Attachment is the cause of suffering second noble truth. Ending attachment is the end of suffering third noble truth. Several of my friends recently got/decided to get tattoos. They all claim that their tattoos have some ‘special meaning’. It all seems rather childish to me. They all appear to be jumping on the tattoo bandwagon because ‘tattoos are cool!’ and using superficial reasons to justify permanently marking their body. It seems like a fad except it has been going for years and years. Why do people always want pretty pictures on them?

Needles and sins

I wanted to do tattoos since I was little. The very first tattoo I saw was on The Prodigy album cover “The fat of the land and that got me going into drawing deeper and deeper. Since I saw those crazy looking people with drawings on their bodies that was it- I was converted.

In order to understand how children see and react within their environment, to me it was necessary to explore their non- corrupt, non- suggested realitypure, clean view of life. And the best place to start is with their drawings- as we all have been given a pen and a paper when young. Once the tools are at hand- we can self express and draw anything that we see around us.

Creating storyboard

In the process of developing characters I also experimented with trying to draw and write like a child. This to me was quiet difficult as I already have developed a certain way of understanding letters and lines- so in order to do this the best solution was to draw with left hand as it has less control over pen or pencil.

getting the right proportions

In the research process it was important for me to understand that there exist various ways of filming angles for different situations as well as other little tips and tricks that were discovered in creative process.

The rule states that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equallyspaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.

pro·por·tion    [pruh-pawr-shuhn, -pohr-] –noun 1. comparative relation between things or magnitudes as to size, quantity, number, etc.; ratio. 2. proper relation between things or parts: to have tastes way out of proportion to one’s financial means. 3. relative size or extent.

Bruno Munari

Experimenting with proportions and body parts was an interesting idea to explore how differeยงnt parts of body look as a whole or in close up.

Exploring possible narrative

After doing some initial shots I intended to do a stop motion animation that would use 3 different shooting techniques to connect filming grammar in space or time but in the end after going through thousands of photos I came to realize that this can only be the part 1 for my ambitious goal.
