Modern day tribes

Over the Summer Break you are asked to create either a single piece of work, or a series of pieces, that capture and portray the essence of a group of people at a certain time, past or present - a nation or “tribe”.

Tribes

This could be anything from the Portuguese community in West London to the Goths of Camden, Sunday League football teams, a crew of graffiti writers, war veterans, professional crazy golfers, traffic wardens or lorry drivers. Look around you and seek out unusual or interesting ‘groups’ of people with odd hobbies, habits, lifestyles or jobs, highlighting their ‘collective’ personalities. Perhaps these people with great stories are right there in front of you and you didn’t see them before. Your final piece can take any shape you like - perhaps a short documentary piece or a series of short moving animated portraits. It could be a series of drawings and recorded interviews or maybe a fantastic set of photographic portraits. The trick is to have good access to your subject matter, spend good time with them and be observant, sensitive, objective and informative when you document the subject. Its not enough to just point a camera at someone - observe what they do, think about why this is interesting and think about how you will capture this.

London is well known for its diverse youth culture and fashion communities all around the city. Wether it’s North- South, East or West- each part of the city has it’s fashion trends that are emerging and can be seen on streets. The most trendy part of city known for it’s hip and chic audiences is based in the East. It’s small second hand, vintage shops, bars, galeries and trend setting couriers promote the change in the way society looks, thinks and behaves.

London is also a great destination for tourists and temporary seasonal workers from all over the world to enjoy and experience the Great British culture

The phrase between young people has become almost as an alternative to asking a phone number or an e-mail address. So maybe a research into tech- spec ultra modern day online tribes would be an option.

Based on the facebook.com usage facts i thought about the young internet generation that is emerging on the virtual waves of our modern day society.

Ilderton road, Bermondsey SE 16 There are around 30 caravans permanently parked which provide shelter to almost 100 people. Age range varies from young kids to pensioners. After many searches i came across an interesting tribe with unusual lifestyle that is very different to what a modern day person considers an average way of living. And Irish traveller community seems to be the right tribe to be looked into.

Recent estimates number both Roma and Irish Travellers together at 300,000. This map depicts majority of officially known Irish traveller sites within UK and Ireland. Others haven’t been shown as most of sites are just a temporary stop for the traveller community.

As a result i created a fake facebook profile for a Irish traveller to show how technology can integrate even the most nomadic ethnic groups of modern society. And how they can still keep in touch even when they are on the move. = 22 =

Life is suffering first noble truth. Attachment is the cause of suffering second noble truth. Ending attachment is the end of suffering third noble truth.

Why do people get tattoos? A tattoo artist once philosophized- when one is tatooed, one is concquerring inner fear and overcoming it- thus becomes a better person. Several of my friends recently got/decided to get tattoos. They all claim that their tattoos have some ‘special meaning’. It all seems rather childish to me. They all appear to be jumping on the tattoo bandwagon because ‘tattoos are cool!’ and using superficial reasons to justify permanently marking their body.

but all this is just a myth

Why do you dress the way you dress? Why do you style your hair the way you style it? Why do you behave the way you do?

Needles and sins

I wanted to do tattoos since I was little. The very first tattoo I saw was on The Prodigy album cover “The fat of the land and that got me going into drawing deeper and deeper. Since I saw those crazy looking people with drawings on their bodies that was it- I was converted.
