Welcome in another fantastic Thai new year celebration!

A celebration like no other, that cannot be understated enough. What was traditionally a ceremony born out of respecting elders, paying homage to the earth and all it provided has now throughout the city turned into a nation wide watertight.

It’s quite an experience to have, everywhere you go you can find kids, adults, whole families all standing on the side of the road with buckets of water, supersoakers or just a hose spraying and squirting others as they pass by on motorbikes, cars but most often in the beds of pickup trucks.

It’s an amazing festival which will leave you speechless as just about everyone is dancing around in the afternoon heat just having a ball getting each other soaked and laughing all the while, it’s truly the perfect way to celebrate the Thai new year, in a party!

So now when you leave your hotel keep in mind that you’re on your way into another watertight, so keep your wallet and phone save (Maybe just leave at home) and keep some cash in your pocket, head out and enjoy the day!

ofitel Krabi Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort hosted an exciting 70pax Thai cooking class, with participants from companies around the world. Led by the resort’s celebrity Indian chef Rahul Negi, participants watched as he made Pad Thai, Tom Yam Kung (Spicy Soup with Prawn), Spring Roll, Chicken with Cashew nuts, and Mango Sticky Rice. Afterwards, they made their own versions as part of a team-cooking competition. Everyone had a great time, and got to enjoy some authentic Thai cuisine.

A shift in how we sleep T

he world as we know it is changing, it’s been doing that since it was born some 6 billion years ago, but the difference is how we live and interact on it. We’re changing the way we humans live our lives, how we grow, how we interact with one another, how we relate and how we travel.

The travel industry is one of the fastest growing industries on the planet with new airlines hoping up every year, offering more flights to more and more exotic locations. Imagine for a second to get a message (or letter) from New York to Madrid it would usually take 3 months and quite often it would never make it. Then it would take the same amount of time for the message to be replied to, so in grand total it would ofter take a minimum of 6 month to get a reply to a letter.

Now it’s instantaneous, through a variety of communication mediums (whats app, facebook, skype, etc.) And this onset of technological revolution has only been really taking over the planet for the past 25 years.

This revolution will continue well into the future, but for the moment we want to talk about how it’s changing the way we interact with one another.

We are a social species, looking to others for comfort, friendship, love and most importantly procreation. We’re a species who has grown and quite honestly survived on this planet through our ability to ‘work together’ to adapt to challenges and listening to different prospectives. We’re a species that quite honestly would be gone if it were not for about ability to work together.

We need that contact, that ability to relate and converse, it’s in our blood, our DNA. This is the main reason facebook took off and overtook the internet changing forever the internet as we know it. People even if they are cooped up in the far reaches of the world have a need, a desire a drive to connect with others, to learn and grow.

It’s fast changing the way we do things and the main driving force behind AirBnB’s success is it’s personal touch. You get the ability to interact with the rooms owner (or sometimes manager) directly, now you tell me what Hotel’s owner would ever talk with a guest? What hotel owner would driver in their car in the pouring rain

The idea is not so far off right? We’ve all said this as one point or another to friends or family members, “Hey buddy, can I crash on your couch?” It’s a common phrase we’re all heard or said at some point or another, and can relate

This infatuation with connecting with others has only naturally led in increase in alternative accommodation options to pick up a pair of guests at the train station?

AirBnB allows for guests and owners to connect directly, to develop a relationship, a temporary bond, a kinship if you will. It also offers hosts the ability to earn income from unused space in their house. It’s a fast growing website and now thats it’s operating in over 26 countries and has a user base of over 150 million and growing there seems to be no end in sight for this revolutionary website.

Humans are a social creature, who need friendship, connections and to develop relationships, we will not change this need, this desire to connect with other, to be accepted and to make friends while meeting new people. We will only change the outside world in which we

have these interactions. AirBnB Has allows us to connect once again on a personal level with other people from all around the world and develop a relationship with them while on our holiday, to learn about the local areas to visit, and maybe even hang out with each other for a beer.

It’s a way for us to take our minds away for our smartphones and look into the eye of another human and talk with them about their house or apartment and city. Hotels are wonderful, they offered many benefits for travellers but they often have that certain robotic feeling, many of us are not interested in, they offer a specific standard and rarely drift from it, AirBnB is a personal touch you cannot get from a corporation.

Window on Krabi Islands

Parks

KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow and sail away surrounded by turquoise water.

THA POM NATIONAL PARK Thapom is a simple local national park, not the easiest to access, but certainly worth the trip. Just outside Ao Nang, Thapom is a place where salty seawater and freshwater from the mountains mix perfectly creating an observable stratified layer, where both sea fish and freshwater fish live separately but together.

Close to Ao Thalane Bay, Thapom is a 30 minute drive from Ao Nang.

CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide.

KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Make sure you visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave.

KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay. KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hide-aways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves.

KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools.

TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings.

SA MORAKOT, THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang.

HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.

KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok.

Reminder When visiting many of the national parks in Krabi there is often an entrance fee which you need to pay by cash at the time of entrance. This fee can vary but it is always between 90thb - 400thb per person. If you do book a tour through a local operator, please make sure to check with them prior to departing as to whether or not the tour price includes this national park fee.

Beaches AO NANG BEACH: At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands.

NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang.

Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. Savor some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the end of the beach neat the Noppharat Thara National park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach.

KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature.

TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets.

From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi.

RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by.

KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away.

Soaring above Ao Nang stands a mountain with an incredibly long ridge-line, which one can hike until you come to the edge which is literally a straight drop-off, 500 meters to the forest floor below.

Looking for a great place for photography? Step no further then the amazing Naga Mountain.

The locals have adopted the name “Naga” due to its’ resemblance to a dragons back - naga means dragon in Thai. The shape of the mountain resembles that of a dragon’s back and it can feel like this as there are occasionally large “scales” scattered on the trailside.

To get to this intense peak: Take the main road to Klong Muang, travel past the major resorts in the area (such as the Sheraton, Sofitel and Amari ) and follow the main road - continuing until it stops at a dead end. This is the trailhead where there is parking and a small ranger station to greet you. In the Ranger Station is a shop where you can purchase simple snacks and drinks to keep you strong on your climb.

The forest in the area is untouched by development and is full of wildlife, a difference from the more predictable beach activities that many of us are accustomed to. Stop mid-stride and take in the sounds of the cicadas, hornbills, songbirds and the occasional scurry of a small mammal - for this is the nature of Krabi.

From the top you can see the greater Ao Nang area, from Ao Nang beach to Krabi town, and on a clear day you can even see

breathtaking to have a view of the world from this height. There is a ledge at this point where you can sit and dangle your feet straight out over 500 meters above the forest floor. Sit and kick your legs out – you are carefree, on top of the world – for that is exactly what it feels like!

Trust us when we tell you this hike is well worth any sweat you expend. Just make sure your camera has batteries.

A stream guides your way at the beginning of the trail, sounding out a gurgle of flowing water to soothe your steps.

Once you start walking towards the trail, you will see a plaque giving some explanation about the mountain. It is a 3.7km hike to the top and there are a few vistapoints along the way. For the most part, along the way, you will enjoy a thick jungle full of life and things to explore.

According to Thai Law, foreign nationals are not allowed to own outright a piece of land anywhere in the kingdom of Thailand. This is true, you cannot directly have the title deed (chanote) in your name if you are a foreigner, but you can still retain rights over the land, this is where things get interesting.

As a foreign national and in an effort to drive foreign business Thailand has allowed for foreigners to open businesses in their names which will give them more opportunities to work and contribute to the Thai economy, this practice has been going on for decades now, this is no surprise, what is interesting and essential to know is how your company can be used. Your company is a means for foreigners to work and create wealth for themselves and their community, but as any company there

are certain rights open the these companies, the rights we’re talking about are simply asset ownership. Under Thai Law a company is allowed to have land assets under its propriety as long as the the majority of the company shares are in Thai hands. This means that as long as 51% of the shares in your company are owned by Thai people then there is no worry about land ownership.

Now you might be wondering, well if 51% of the shares of my company are in the hands of Thai people, then I do not have any rights over decisions and company policies anyways. This might make you nervous, but when you start a new company there is a grace period during which all papers and documents are organised for the company and and taxes are lined up accordingly, after this period (between 3-6 months) as the company owner you can transition yourself to the Managing Director with full signatory

powers over company decisions. This process is normal and almost all previous foreign owned companies have gone through this process before to offer their foreign owners full transparency and security in the eyes of the government.

After you secure the land under your company name it’s all yours to do with as you like. There are a number of building restrictions to take into consideration when creating that dream home you’re always wanted but the regulation in Thailand is far less than what Western countries experience.

hese beloved creatures hold a special place in the hearts of all Thai’s, they are the national animal of Thailand and have been used in numerous situations throughout the kingdom.From battle war machines to lugging logs through dense jungle to just strolling around the jungles taking tourists on leisure walks through their homes, thee amazing creatures have a lot to offer.

Elephants are something of a mystery to many of us throughout the globe, they are the largest land animal which is in existence, they enjoy one of the longest lifespans of any land mammal, they are highly intelligent and posses immense power yet still have a gentle side to them. With a habitat in the tropics and sub tropic regions of Africa and Asia they are not found in the America’s and Europe unless that is in a zoo. In Thailand they are natively from the forests which make up the landscape of Thailand. Once, ages ago thousands of wild Asian elephants roamed the forests freely from the north to the south, in our current day and age few are left to live naturally in the wild due to increased desire for their tusks and the ivory trade poachers often struck out for a quick profit. There are a number which live in Khao Yai national park in the Isan region of Thailand which are protected by a number of full time national park staff. Other than Khao Yai wild elephants have been hunted or captured so if you want to see a truly wild elephant your best shot is to head north to Khao Yai National park.

Many of these elephants which have been captured from the wild and put to work draw media attention on their treatment and conditions they’re forced to ensure just to get money for their owners and food for themselves. Many of these elephants are worked to exhaustion and not given adequate resting time in-between working days, they are also often beaten by their trainers, so somewhat that media attention is justified.

On the other hand these trainers and owners are often tasked with massive areas of land to clear in limited time and a limited labor force in order to meet the quote and get paid, this money will go to feeding the elephants and their families, so it;’s somewhat of a catch 22. We don’t accept the inhumane treatment of elephants but for those in dire situations they must make choices under different circumstances.

Although many of the elephants which end up at logging camps and elephant trekking camps throughout Thailand where the methods for training and keeping the elephants in line is often more on the rough side there is one such place which feel differently.

Phang Nga Elephant Park located just a short 1.5 hours from Ao Nang is leading the way in elephant treatment and practices, using alternative methods and non-violent practices to gain the trust and respect of the elephants from the mahouts (elephant trainers). Although a bull hook or training stick is still present on

the trainers in case of emergency typical training consists of pulling the elephants’ ears and guiding them using signals but most of all using positive reinforcement to train the elephants in the first place is the fundamental basis of the Phang Nga Elephant Park’s training philosophy.

ELEPHANTS EAT 10% OF THEIR BODY WEIGHT DAILY WHICH CAN BE UPWARDS OF 400 KILOGRAMS DAILY! If you teach anything (people of animals) positive reinforcement is a method of teaching by giving reward when a action or response desired is performed. Negative reinforcement is the opposite, once a non desired behaviour is performed or action is done the animal or person is hit or given some sort of punishment.

Studies have proved that positive reinforcement is a stronger and better means of training for animals and people alike. Despite this truth many organisations still practice negative reinforcement, Phang Nga Elephant Park is out to try to educate mahouts about different effective methods of training. At this date and time they take in trainers from around southern Thailand and teach them this effective method of training, afterwards these trainers can return to their villages where they came from and implement these same practices in their home villages.

Thats not all The Phang Nga Elephant park has in the plan. They just recently secured a large 70 rai plot of land in the Northern hills of Phuket where they plan to build a clinic, rehabilitation area, training grounds and general living areas of mistreated, injured and old elephants in need of help. they project is planned to begin in the next 5-10 years and will be a great step forward for the region and the industry nationally as the more centres like this one the more accessible care and treatment for elephants is and as a whole the public opinion of the industry will be improved and the elephants lives will be better.

The Phang Nga Elephant park is a special place for the elephants and tourists alike as they strive to teach every guest about the lifecycle of elephants, their social patterns, what they eat and how they live among a number of other questions.

ince a young boy Juart had loved rearranging things to make images and emotions come to life, it was somewhat of a therapy or way to escape for him. Never attracted to the traditional way of life he always vowed for a more artistic version of life, a better way to express himself to the world around him. There was always a certain side of him that had a clear and distinct vision for what and how he wanted his work to turn out, along the path things would often change and become modified, but the end image or impression always stayed steadfast like a mangrove forest standing it’s ground against an onslaught of pounding waves.

His artistic journey began some number of years when Khun Juart was just a boy and as a boy he was curious of the world he lived in. The trees which towered overhead, the rainwater collecting on the edges of streets, sunsets blending brilliant colors in the evening skies, everything had a voice and something to say to Khun Juart, and he tried to find his voice to talk back.

He grew up in the densely populated metropolises of Bangkok, surrounded by an amazing amount of colors, shapes, sounds and most of all, life. Such an immense amount of inspiration thought the streets of Bangkok, from the streetwise food vendors to the craftspeople who give life to Chatucak and other markets throughout the city. There was always an overflow of inspiration for Khun Juart as he spend his days exploring and learning about the wide and diverse world around him.

Khun Juart began his artistic journey with painting, nice and easy to start. He would paint anything he could; paper, canvas, walls, wood anything he was allowed to paint (sometimes not allowed to) he did. It was a way for him to feel alive and manifest his dreams into reality. His first introduction to painting came at the young age of 12, and soon opened the gateway to other art mediums such as sculpting, carpentry and wood working, paper mache and much more.

Meeting his wife some years later the 2 of them began trips to Krabi on an annual basis, just to get outside the city and see another landscape, that all began some 20 years ago when Krabi was still carving it’s place out on the world map and still unknown to many backpackers, luxury holiday seekers and everyone in-between. Now it’s grown into a major hub in the region offering a destination to some 2,000,000 travelers in 2016 alone.

With the change in Krabi there has been an influx of other artists coming to Krabi or artists in Krabi having more of a community to breathe and create in freely. The governor of Krabi has a strong love for various kinds of art and this can be seen throughout the city of Krabi town, from the Bronze casted history wall just outside the municipality office in Krabitown to the recently opened Andaman Art Museum to the traffic lights on Maharat road, these are all government sponsored projects and reflects the communities commitment to keeping history alive with an artistic flare.

Maybe it was this sense of community, maybe it was the towering mountains of Krabi, maybe it was the un-congested streets of the province, but whatever it was Khun Juart knew he had to make this his new home.

So some 10 years ago Khun Juart and his wife decided to make the plunge and move to Krabi, to see this new and exciting place every day and not only once a year.

Immediately he began combing the beaches of krabi looking for driftwood and other lost items to reshape and modify to create sculptures of people and animals.

There was still a strong passion fo panting and this continued as he began painting drift wood, broken and discarded planks and transform them into wall hangings, coat racks and other useful items. Khun Juart has kept his sense of style and love of art alive and continues to thrive in this wonderful part of the globe.

His love for painting has never wavered but with the introduction of multiple other mediums

oh Jum Island is still the quintessential destination in Krabi province if you are looking for authentic Thai village life and development that is still a small footprint.

Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades?

We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the islands resorts.

Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure.

The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family-run character, ranging from the backpackers paradise to luxurious beach villas.....

Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons.

The three villages; Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches.

Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated subdistrict of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth weaving and painting or ‘batik’ as it is known as here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipa-palms.

Since all the resorts face West, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot.

Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat. There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat.

During the high season most visitors come to Koh Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers.

The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year.

Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare, it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help, we recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with all of our readers.

There are 2 ways to get to Koh Jum- by passing ferry or longtail boat. There are ferries that leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, both ferries stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above.

The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum- this was our favorite of the 2 methods of travel.

If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat.

You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” - the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat, they are frequent and easy to spot.

These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier.

WELL WORTH THE EXPERIENCE

Now, the pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland.

Then we went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too”, the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from.

If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat.

We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925.

We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70thb fare and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort.

Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by.
