Krabi ‘the way life should be’

Nestled among the massive karsts who resemble the backdrop to a scene from the film Jurassic park. There are massive overhanging palm leaves that dangle into streets and roaring tropical hardwoods standing off in the distance marking various national parks in the region.

Krabi is spread out over a large space, including some 100+ islands, a capital town (Krabi town) and many other various smaller villages and towns. There are a number of touristic hotspots such as Ao Nang, Klong Muang, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Jum and Koh Lanta, outside these various areas there is nothing but exploring a more rural side of life. There are natural mineral rich hot springs, waterfalls, soaring cliffs to climb and beautiful isolated islands to visit. There is no end to the many things you can do while in Krabi.

There is also always the good old, sitting on the beach with a cold drink in your hand that is the go-to activity for everyone (locals and tourists alike). That relaxing should not be overlooked, many times on holidays we can get too involved with all of things we ‘can do’ and jam pack our days.

ird’s nest soup is revered as a delicacy in mainland China as a delicacy fetching prices upwards of $2,000USD per kilogram. It’s rarity and supposed nutritional value have led it’s rise in popularity and as the Chinese population continues to grow so to do the expected growth and development of the bird’s nest soup industry.

The nests themselves are made from a variety of different species of Swiftlets who make their nests from their saliva. After the young have left the nests the nests are harvested by man or groups of men, gathered, cleaned and prepared to be shipped off to market.

The primary destination for birds nests are mainland China as they have been cultivated and entered into the Chinese menu for the past 400 years or so, today it’s become a tradition.

Krabi is an ideal landscape for the swiftlets as the porous limestone cliffs offer plenty of crevices and caves places for the birds to hide and make their nests and larger colonies. You can see many swiftlets flying overhead at almost every island you come to, just keep you eyes peeled and look around.

You can find various harvesting camps throughout the Andaman bay region due to the widespread limestone formations throughout the region. Namely the most larger and more popular nesting areas are viking cave on Koh Phi Phi Lae also also Koh Hong.

If you do come up to a harvest camp, lease NEVER enter this. The people who work there are often up on ladders 30 meters up in the air harvesting the many nests, these camps and are not open to the public, they are private property and are actually deemed agriculture land, so please don’t venture inside.

If your interested in trying some of this birds nest soup you can buy some at our local grocery store Makro, but the best quality and real stuff needs to be sourced in China.

There are many claims about the ethnicity of harvesting and eating birds nest soup, so please take all sides into account before you do decide to buy or eat this product.

KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow and sail away surrounded by turquoise water.

THA POM NATIONAL PARK Thapom is a simple local national park, not the easiest to access, but certainly worth the trip. Just outside Ao Nang, Thapom is a place where salty seawater and freshwater from the mountains mix perfectly creating an observable stratified layer, where both sea fish and freshwater fish live separately but together.

Close to Ao Thalane Bay, Thapom is a 30 minute drive from Ao Nang.

CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide.

KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Make sure you visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave.

KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay. KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hide-aways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves.

KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools.

TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings.

SA MORAKOT, THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang.

HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.

KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok.

Reminder When visiting many of the national parks in Krabi there is often an entrance fee which you need to pay by cash at the time of entrance. This fee can vary but it is always between 90thb - 400thb per person. If you do book a tour through a local operator, please make sure to check with them prior to departing as to whether or not the tour price includes this national park fee.

Beaches AO NANG BEACH: At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands.

NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang.

Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. Savor some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the end of the beach neat the Noppharat Thara National park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach.

KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature.

TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets.

From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi.

RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by.

KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away.

ou will notice during your time in Thailand that Thai people all across the country love food! The process of making, talking and discuss about food will take up a good portion of everyones day. In fact when you see someone in the afternoon in Thailand a common greeting is: ‘have you eaten already?’ to which a common response would be to answer yes or no, and if yes, to give a brief overview of the meal. Thai people are completely enamoured with food.

In fact throughout Thailand each region has adopted their own style of noodle dishes.

One of the most common simple dishes across the country are noodles.

They come in all shapes and forms.

Perhaps most commonly known because of Pad Thai. A diets made up of medium sized rice noodles, bean sprouts, fried eggs, shallots, garlic, dried shrimp, and topped with crushed peanuts and side of crushed red chilis. Pad Thai might be the most well known dish in Thailand, but it certainly isn’t the only one you can try.

It hasn’t always been like this though.

Noodle dishes weren’t a mainstay of the Thai diet until the time of WWII. During the 1940’s the Thai government in an effort to conserve the countries national resources and rice crops from foreign exports and also to promote a singular national identity promoted eating noodles. This was done by issuing statements and broadcasts telling the Thai people that if they were to eat noodles they were helping the country and preserving the rice crop. there was a famous slogan issues all across the country during this period “Noodle is your lunch” promoting the dish of Pad Thai as a national dish and a symbol of pride all across the country.

This national dish really did take off and is now what the country is often known for internationally speaking.

It is thought that noodles were originally brought to Thailand (At the time the capital was Ayutthaya) by Chinese traders during the the 1700’s. At the time the dish reflected a more sour and salty flavour profile and didn’t contain many fresh vegetables, this was due to it’s influence from the Chinese traders. Slowly over the years and experimentation that noodles underwent it took on a new breed of itself and developed it’s own identity as a Thai dish.

hailand is all too familiar with monsoon season. Making its way sure and steady as the seasonal winds begin to pull moisture from the Indian Ocean to this amazing South East Asian continent. The heaven’s open up and seem to provide a grand orchestra of natural sights and sounds during monsoon. The locals will call this time of the year both wet and monsoon season. Often times interchanging the words while describing the weather patterns as they share the latest talk of the day.

Travelers are leery as they consider making plans for coming to Krabi during this time of the year. In fear of having a spoiled holiday. For those of us having lived here for many years we can shed some light on

the reality of coming down south during monsoon (wet) season.

Southern Thailand in itself is a tropical region and it rains throughout the year.

Often times when the rains come these showers are very intermittent and mostly arrive mid- afternoon or early evening.

If you’ve planned to enjoy a day at the beach. You could have a great time of fun in the sun, return to your accommodation to bathe and relax as you watch the rains passing through. These showers sometimes last only minutes at a time.

Coming during this time of the year may cause disruptions and disappointment to your travel plans but if the forces of nature are for you then you will have the vacation of a lifetime. The bonus of risking travel during monsoon is the affordability that comes as a hidden blessing. Klong Muang Beach

12km west of Ao Nang is another of mainland Krabi’s ‘ beach delights - the beautiful Klong Muang Beach. With far fewer hotels and bars, it’s ‘ much less crowded than Ao Nang, with the beach sparsely populated even in high season, making it the perfect spot if you’ve ‘ headed to Krabi with relaxing in paradise on your mind.

Whilst it may not have the beautiful surroundings of Ao Nang, its relatively stone-free sand and shallow waters makes it perfect for families, with the palm trees towards the back of the beach providing some much-needed shade from the hot sun.

Unlike Ao Nang, Klong Muang beach has taken the quality over quantity approach to its hotels, with a number of luxury hotels filling the market rather than budget and backpacker resorts – though they can still be found. There are only a handful of bars compared to its eastern neighbor, but more than enough to keep you interested during a short stay in the area, and the same goes ‘ for restaurants. Whilst it might not be the best place to base yourself during a stay in Krabi, it’s ideal for a day or too away from the hustle and bustle of Ao Nang.

Tub Kaek Beach

Only a ten-minute drive away from Klong Muang beach is another top Krabi beach – Tub Kaek. Perfect for an afternoon in the sun, ‘ the beach is far less crowded than Ao Nang and features awesome views of distant islands such as Koh Hong. However it’s not great for swimming due to the shallow and rocky coast, so your options for activities are limited to sunbathing and enjoying the view. Tub Kaek is home primarily to a number of high end resorts with great pools to satisfy your swimming needs, though there are a handful of cheaper options available too.

Klong Thom Art Museum

S

ome 5,000 years ago Krabi was only just beginning to be settled, it was a burgeoning place which limited outside reach to the world beyond. There was no ‘Thailand” as we know it today, there were little scattered encampments throughout the region, small villages if you will. As the region is rich in mineral resources there were numerous semi precious gemstones found throughout the region, each village down the pinesula which is Thailand tended to be gifted with a few different types of gemstones found locally around them. So different regions would use what they had locally at their disposal and shape them into art. At the time most of what they made from these stones was various shapes of beads, each region again would have it’s own distinct shape and design based around what could be found in the region.

Once trade became easier and tribes moved from place or traders moved throughout the region, they would often trade with beads from their region for another bead of a region, using the beads as a form of currency.

In Klong Tom as the soil is such in Sulphur and calcium carbonate this region was a hotspot for bead discover and creation. These beads were transported through the region bed most of the beads were found in the river beds in the Klong Tom district of Krabi as this is the mineral rich region of Krabi.

Nowadays Klong Tom is home to the ever popular Emerald Pool and Hot springs, but did you also know about the Klong Tom museum? in 1982 the monk Abbot Arthornsangworrakit began collecting all of the beads he could get his hands on and putting them on display at his home at the Klong Tom temple for the local villagers to see. Slowly through donations from local authorise and private citizens the money was raised to better the temple and improve the museum. In 2006 with the help of the mayor of Klong Tom, Mr. Piriya Srisuksomwong and Abbot Arthornsangworrakit there was a full restoration of the Klong Tom temple (Wat Klong Tom) and an official museum was opened to showcase the beads and other historical relics found in the region.

The temple is an impressive sight and the mecum is a quick yet informative visit learning about the history of our region.

If your interested in visiting the Klong Tom temple can be found early on google maps or just by following route 4 towards Koh lanta and just past the run to visit the hot springs and emerald pool you will see the dramatic temple on the left hand side of the road.

As time went on and the region changed and beads as a form of currency were left behind in favour of a more modern metallic currency of coin the beads were left aside and creation of these beads as a craft became a lost art.

It wasn’t until the late 1900’s that the riverbeds around Klong Tom began to be excavated for archeological purposes. Before this time the local villagers knew of the beads and that there were many buried in and round the riverbeds but felt that they should be left to rest under fear of superstition. Once government officials began excavating the region they discovered beads of all varieties made from a wide array of materials such as bone, glass, wood, claws, gold and silver. This led the archaeologists to believe that this was not only a region of ebad making but also a trading

e all love to explore and venture into the unknown, in fact the ocean covers some 2/3 of the globes surface. By coving this vast area there are numerous landscapes to explore beheith the waves.

Krabi is home to over 100 islands offering many diverse SCUBA dive sites to explore and learn about. The limestone geology of Krabi allows for the salt rich water of the Andaman bay to slowly eat away at the rocks and create thousands nooks and crannies perfect for moral eels, giant clams and other fish and invertebrates to seek refuge. We highly encourage you to get out into the waters of Krabi and explore this fascinating life under the seas. There are a number of dive schools in Ao Nang to choose from but they all have a great record taking out students to SCUBA dive in Krabi.

Krabi offers a diverse range of dive sites for divers of all abilities, from cave and wreck diving to deep technical diving to the quiet peaceful recreational dives, there is something for everyone. We just ask you to please not touch the corals as they are extremely delicate and some species grow at the painfully slow rate of 2mm/year Maning many of the large corals you can see are often thousands of years old.

Krabi is home to some truly stunning and beautiful coral reefs, fish and invertebrate species as well as large pelagic fish and sharks the oceans have to offer. We openly invite you to explore this amazing world beneath the waves if your considering SCUAB diving in Asia. First we want to go over some safety and need to know before you get wet.

1. Is SCUBA Diving for everyone?

Yes, nearly everyone who wishes to go SCUBA Diving can, there are a few medical conditions which can prevent you from SCUBA diving but for the most part 99% of the population has the ability to go. Main concerns are if you have a heart condition, so if you do we recommend you seek prior advice from a medical professional. There are doctors in Thailand and Krabi who work with the dive companies in the region assessing whether or not divers can go SCUBA diving in Krabi. So if you don’t have time prior to leaving your country, don’t worry there is time when you arrive to check.

2. I’m not certified, can I still go SCUBA Diving in Thailand?

Yes, there is the easy to do DSD (Discover SCUBA Diving) which is a single day trip out to certain dive site. When you’re on a DSD day you will have a Dive Instructor with you and

no more than 3 other DSD students all of who will dive together. The Dive Instructor will give a short briefing on the boat about safety concerns, breathing, decompression and what you can expect to see underwater. The Dive Instructor will not let you dive below a certina depth, therefore keeping you safe on your day of diving.

3. I want to get certified, how can I do this?

All of the SCUBA Diving operators in Krabi will offer a number of certification courses, ranging from Bubble maker courses (youger than 12 years old) Open Water SCUBA Diver all the way up to Dive Instructor. You’ll have to decide which certification level is right for you and then get more details from the operator directly.

4. Is SCUBA Diving in Krabi dangerous?

SCUBA Diving in general carries with it inherent risks, but for 99.9% of divers there is no worry as long as you follow a number of safety procedures. Check your equipment and dive with your abilities you have nothing to worry about. Here is a short list of things to consider before you take to the great blue.

When you’re SCUBA Diving it’s important to always be breathing therefore allowing excess air to escape when pressure is added or taken away. If your hold your breath during SCUAB Diving and you are in the process of ascending the lungs will overextend because the pressure will not be able to escape. In the unlikely event of holding ones breathe there is a chance of damaging lungs due to over-expansion, a condition not to be taken lately, so please always remember to breathe.

Ascend slowly - When your are SCUBA Diving there is an exchange of pressure and gasses between the blood stream. One of these gases is Nitrogen and with Nitrogen making up some 70% of the gas we breathe in, there is a lot of it. When a breath is taken in this Nitrogen under pressure is absorbed into the blood stream, then you ascend slowly much of this nitrogen is allowed to slowly come out fo solution. In the event that you ascent too fast from a depth there is a chance that the Nitrogen in the

bloodstream can consolidate under the skin creating small pockets of gas. This is one of the causes of the infamous ‘Bends’. This can all be avoided by ascending at a rate no faster than 30 feet (10 meters) per minute. Always make sure to make a safety stop at 15 feet (5 meters) to ensure all excess Nitrogen is given time to come out of the blood stream at a safe rate.

Check your gear - SCUBA Diving in Krabi is not possible without SCUBA Diving equipment, therefore treat it with respect.

Always check the air in your tank, check the weights on your BCD, make sure your buddy’s gear is also in order. Always check that you take a look at their equipment, in fact the vast majority of equipment related accidents do not occur to equipment malfunction, they occur due to the divers not knowing how to use the equipment. Depending on your dive check equipment pertinent to that dive, for example if your going on a night dive, make sure you have a Primary and back up torch. If your going on a nitro dive, make sure you’re tank is properly mixed with the correct proportions of nitrogen. If you’re going on a 2 tank dive, make sure both of your tank are filled properly and connected securely.

When thinking of safety and time management make sure you’re planning ahead in all times. There is a simple rule call the of theirs which lines out that the beginning of a dive or outward journey should have 1/3 of the air reserve allocated for this purpose.

The return journey should also have 1/3 of the air supply allocated for this part of the trip. Finally the ascent should have 1/3 of the air supply allocated for this purpose. Leaving 1/3 of the air supply for a safe ascent and giving enough time for the safety stop will ensure that the bends can be avoided and and unforseen issues which can arise can be dealt with with amply air.

Use the buddy system - SCUBA

Diving in Thailand and the world for that matter recommends that all SCUBA Divers dive with a buddy. There are unforeseeable events which can occur during a dive it’s always important that you have a second diver with you who can assist in case something happens.

Stay Fit and hydrated - SCUBA Diving is a

physically demanding sport. It’s a sport that takes a toll on anyones body, therefore it’s always best to treat your body the best that you can in order to ensure it will take care of you on a dive. Go for a job, eat healthy in general. Get a good nights sleep and don’t drink the night before going out SCUBA Diving in Krabi.

Also it’s recommended to drink plenty of water before and during SCUAB Diving in Thailand.

Avoid cigarette and coffee while diving as much as you can, and if you’re not feeling good in between or before dives take a rest and don’t push yourself.

Dive within your limits Depending on your experience, your certification and your ability there are certain depths and dives you are able to go on. It’s important that you take that seriously and don’t go beyond your ability. If your an open water diver capable of SCUBA Diving to 18 Meters in depth and have dived to 18 meters before, but the dive your about to go on can go to 40 meters, make sure you tell the dive master or dive instructor of your level and ability. All dive masters and dive instructors will ask during the dive briefing what all divers certification level are. Don’t push yourself it’s often the case for many dive related accidents when divers go above and beyond their ability to try and show off.

Plan your dive and dive your plan - Every dive site is different, every

dive site required certain knowledge and understanding, thats why it’s always best to go SCUBA Diving in krabi with a professional knowledgable dive operator. Someone who lives and dives the dive sites of Krabi daily and knows each and every place like the back of their palm. Prior to every dive the dive master or dive instructor will go over the dive site in detail. Alerting all divers of anything needed to know about regarding currents, depths, swim-throughs and such. It’s important that every dive is planned (by the dive master or dive instructor) and that all divers listen and ask questions about the dive and moreover understand the plan for the dive site. It’s important that all divers understand the dive plan and stick to it.

When you are diving with a buddy whether it be a friend or someone who was assigned to you by the dive instructor it’s important that you talk with them, alert them of any particular equipment or dive issues you might have prior to descending into the water.

5. How deep are the dive sites of Krabi?

The whole Andaman bay covers a range of depths opening up a number of dive sites, the most shallow dive sites are around 5-10 meters and the deepest dive sites around around 70 meters. The deeper dive sites 40+ meters require technical diving abilities as the standard PADI or CMAS recreational diving certificate allows divers to descend down to 40 meters at most.

6. I want to go free diving can I?

Yes most certainly, all of the dive sites in Krabi are open to freedivers, but free diving is a whole different sport that SCUBA Diving. We recommend you visit and get in touch with a seasoned professional free diver who can teach the skills and challenges of the sport prior to you going out to go free diving yourself.

Bamboo and it’s many uses

I am a builder, and I always observe how things are put together. What struck me after living here in Ao Nang for a while was how many places I saw bamboo being used. It is not only used decoratively in restaurants and such, but it is used everywhere! I see bamboo commonly used for everyday needs such as cooking as well as in construction, housing, sign-making, transportation, furniture, food, clothing and so on. In a world of throwaway products, bamboo is one of the most perfect renewable resources, and it’s great that Thailand utilizes it so well.

Major research on bamboo didn’t start till the 1920’s, and it was found that bamboo has been commonly utilized for over 5000 years. What was once the symbol of the Orient, bamboo is a beautiful combination between the strength of hardwood and the sustainability of grass.

There are native species of bamboo everywhere, including in the United States and Europe, where many consider it an invasive plant. Because it grows so quickly, bamboo has the ability to take over areas of a garden, if not taken care of. This makes it feel like an invasive plant, however it’s just that it has good propagation ability in most soils. Bamboo grows in two styles, clumping and running. Technically a type of grass, bamboo grows faster than any woody plant in the world.

Typically, most species of bamboo will grow between 1”- 4” (inches) a day, but some species can grow up to 98” in a day. A bamboo forest can grow to maturity in 5 years. The Giant bamboo, with a diameter of 6-8’(feet), can grow to heights of up to 90’ in a 5-year period.

Imagine harvesting a whole forest of bamboo, only to return 5 years later to do it again.

Globally, bamboo is finding its way into home flooring and trim applications. Typical hardwood trees need 40 to 120 years to reach maturity, so a great deal of planning to maximize yield over the years must be sustained. This non-renewable aspect makes hardwood harvesting of some of our old growth forests less appealing.

Bamboo will grows in temperate zones in most places of the world. The United States also has a native bamboo strain, which can reach a height of 15’ to 40’. Here in Thailand you see bamboo growing everywhere, along the side of a road, or in a thicket of rubber or palm trees. Bamboo is a natural product that can easily grow on your property with little or no effort, and has the

benefit of cash crop at harvest time.

Conjuring up images of Panda bears eating their special diet of bamboo leaves, it’s easy to realize that bamboo was first used in China 5000 years ago. Its wide variety of uses is just now coming to light as being an ecological benefit.

Bamboo’s use as a sustainable commodity began long before the term “going green” became a trend. Its history is seen in many aspects of Chinese life and throughout Southeast Asia - in the paintings and antiques as well as the products of daily life. “The plant for the people”, as it is often referred to, there are thousands of uses for this plant. Bamboo is used to make bows and arrows, Japanese Kempo swords, paint and tattoo brushes, musical instruments, scaffolding and it is even used to make wine. Bamboo wine was created in Tanzania from a species of wine bamboo called Oxytenanthera Brauni. Bamboo has a higher compression rate than wood, concrete and brick and a tensile strength that rivals steel. It was abundant bamboo planting that was used to return the landscape back in Japanese cities, after the atomic bombs were dropped there in 1945.

You can see the Thai people use it in the simplest of ways, like having a bamboo stick for holding a leg of chicken or some pork to be cooked on the grill at street vendor carts.

Bamboo makes great huts and furniture, street signs, curtains, shoes and there is even bamboo clothing, which is comparable to the softness of cashmere. Bamboo is used for fishing and as an 8’ pole with a hook to bring fighting bulls under control after a fight.

Some varieties of bamboo have medicinal properties in their roots and can also be used in many foods and soups. The edible part of a bamboo is a low-calorie source of potassium.

On the totally opposite side of the spectrum are the shoots of the giant bamboo, which contain cyanide. It seems like the versatility of bamboo is endless.

There are over 1450 species of bamboo and each region of the world produces its own specific plant. We often remember from a book, picture or a story, different images of bamboo. There are several varieties of giant bamboo; one type, called Moso bamboo, which can reach 7” in diameter,

and 75’ in height, grows in large forests in both China and Japan. This type of bamboo is used in flooring and construction scaffolding. The film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was filmed in the forests of China and the bamboo backdrop in the film displayed impressive tall stands of this bamboo.

Bridge building - another interesting application - not only has to be flexible to bend to shape, but strong enough to support heavy loads of traffic.

One such project is the famous Mon Bridge in Sangkhlaburi, Thailand. This is the second longest foot bridge in the world and the longest in Thailand, at 1500’ in length and a height of 25’ over a river. It was badly damaged in a storm in 2013. The dedicated locals joined forces and replaced the damaged bridge by building a floating bridge in one week – out of bamboo of course.

One last application for versatility of bamboo was a bicycle first shown at Stanley Cycle Show in 1894 in London. The developing company went out of business but was revitalized in 2005 as Calfee Design Company, builders of bamboo bicycle frames, in California. The unique properties of bamboo rival those of a carbon fiber frame bike, in strength, weight and comfort.

The versatility of bamboo and its multitude of applications are outstanding.

hen WWII ended in 1945 the world was a dramatically different place than it is today. Boarders were being drawn, cities were recovering and rebuilding from the devastation and new countries and powers were beginning to emerge. Korea, was relatively uninvolved in the bloody conflict that destroyed much of the world but after this conflict the Korean government saw a need to make a stronger unity among the Korean population.

One of the many ways was to unify the various martial art styles in Seoul into one national style.

This style took on a name in the beginning of ‘Tae Too Do’ in 1955 when the various gyms and styles came together. Later in 1959, the name was changed to ‘Taekwando’ as it is known today.

PYOUNG KYU KONG is now a 5th degree black belt and teaches Taekwando to a range of children in Krabi. Some come to train just to stay in shape and to keep busy, while others come to train more seriously and compete all across the country.

Pyoung Kyu Kong was once a young inspiring fighter as all of his students are now. He began to train when he was a young 6 years old when Taekwando classes was Australia. While there he met his a wonderful woman from Krabi and fell in love. Soon after meeting her and starting to date they decided to move to Krabi together and open a Taekwondo gym in rural, quiet Krabi.

Soon after making the decision they were on a plane and off to a new start.

Opened his gym some 10 years ago Pyong Kyu Kong began accepting children and adults into his classes, offering daily training for all that would partake. After a number of years and finding that the older generation had a lesser affinity for the sport, he decided to stop offering adult classes and opened

By the time Pyoung Kyu Kong reached the age of 12 he began to realize that the limits of his gym and city. Understanding that this place would not allow him to progress further in his training and improvement of the martial art, he decided to move.

Getting there

Ferries to Koh Lanta depart from the Krabi Passenger Pier in Krabi Town, close to the center of town. The duration of the ferry is around 2 hours, with the seas typically calm and refreshments available on board. Ferries arrive at Saladan Pier on the northern tip of Koh Lanta Yai, from where it’s possible to take a taxi, songteaw or hire a scooter to your hotel.

oh Jum Island is still the quintessential destination in Krabi province if you are looking for authentic Thai village life and development that is still a small footprint.

Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades?

We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the islands resorts.

Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure.

The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family-run character, ranging from the backpackers paradise to luxurious beach villas.....

Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons.

The three villages; Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches.

Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated subdistrict of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth weaving and painting or ‘batik’ as it is known as here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipa-palms.

Since all the resorts face West, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot.

Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat. There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat.

During the high season most visitors come to Koh Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers.

The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year.

Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare, it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help, we recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with all of our readers.

There are 2 ways to get to Koh Jum- by passing ferry or longtail boat. There are ferries that leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, both ferries stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above.

The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum- this was our favorite of the 2 methods of travel.

If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat.

You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” - the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat, they are frequent and easy to spot.

These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier.

WELL WORTH THE EXPERIENCE

Now, the pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland.

Then we went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too”, the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from.

If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat.

We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925.

We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70thb fare and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort.

Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by.
