T
ravelling to distant parts of the world comes with the opportunity to fulfill your wildest dreams. Experiencing new sights, sounds, foods, music and cultures strange to oneself, is at the top of many a souls bucket list. Taking a break from the norm; trying something new. Sparking your sense of adventure and like a child, imaging endless escapades. In order to make these great exploits there is a ‘must do’. That is making a decision; plain and simple. But is it really that simple? For some decision making is a rational, well thought out process. While for others it is painstaking and something to be avoided on all fronts. Many people fear the results of making the wrong decision. Thus analysis paralysis sets in and hinders this individual the freedom of experiencing many of life’s adventures or possibilities snuffed out by this fear. If you’re the wary one who dreads decision making. We’ve got some simple helps for you to begin to apply now in order for you to get out and live a little. Maybe even a lot! • Flip a coin: What? This can be one of the quickest ways to make a simple, seemingly meaningless decision. If you’re scratching your head over deciding between a fresh pressed juice or a tropical smoothie and simply can’t decide. Snatch a coin from your pocket or purse and flip that thing high in the air. Heads or Tails! Let it decide your fate and then simply sip your elixir in peace • Seek a friend: Seeking help from a friend or family member allows you to gain perspective from a different view point. Bringing a second party into your decision making will give you additional things to think about that you may not have thought on your own. Be careful to whom you go to. You don’t want to wind up more frustrated walking away from the conversation than how you felt when you reached out. Go to someone that you know will help you navigate to a peaceable resolve
14
• Write it down: Writing down pros and cons is a great way for you to measure out the benefits or detriment of the decision you are facing. You will have opportunity to see it on paper. This often times pulls you ‘out of your head’ and allows you to rationalize much easier. Often times things will become very apparent when you simply see one side of the list much longer than the other. You will conclude that it’s only obvious as to which direction you should go • Who will benefit: When leveraging a decision you might want to look at who may benefit from this decision. Will it help to build something of value for yourself, family, community or the world around you • Faith card: Yep, many people place their faith in something or someone who knows life much better than themselves and trust in prayer to bring a resolve towards a peaceable decision
intervention. Considering the outcome of a decision will oftentimes aid you towards looking at the whole picture instead of a shortsighted one Now you can safely sit down to map out your next adventure. Knowing that you have all you need to make these decisions well worth making. Let the fun begin!

• Ouch that hurts: More times than many may want to admit we are bent towards making decisions that might hurt ourselves or those near and dear to us; even others. You can see this so often with acts of violence, drug and alcohol abuse, obesity, smoking, infidelity, etc. What we see as a huge fiasco in one’s life started one decision at a time. We only see the manifested outcome of thoughts that were acted upon without help or a possible

Parks
KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow and sail away surrounded by turquoise water.
THA POM NATIONAL PARK Thapom is a simple local national park, not the easiest to access, but certainly worth the trip. Just outside Ao Nang, Thapom is a place where salty seawater and freshwater from the mountains mix perfectly creating an observable stratified layer, where both sea fish and freshwater fish live separately but together. Close to Ao Thalane Bay, Thapom is a 30 minute drive from Ao Nang.
CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide. KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Make sure you visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay. KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hide-aways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves.
KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings. SA MORAKOT, THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.
KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok.

Reminder When visiting many of the national parks in Krabi there is often an entrance fee which you need to pay by cash at the time of entrance. This fee can vary but it is always between 90thb - 400thb per person. If you do book a tour through a local operator, please make sure to check with them prior to departing as to whether or not the tour price includes this national park fee.
Beaches AO NANG BEACH: At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. Savor some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the end of the beach neat the Noppharat Thara National park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature.
November I 2018
TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by. KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away.

Thapom National Park
N
ow let us introduce you to a mangrove sanctuary unlike any other; Thapom water canal. A blend of fresh mineral water that seeps out from the depths of a rich blue pond. Flowing outwards to the ocean, mixing itself with the warm salty waters of the ocean as they ebb and flow through the mangrove forests. The national park is located approximately 30 minutes by motorbike from downtown Ao Nang. It is a popular destination among the locals which live close to the park’s entrance. It intends to expand its facilities in the next few years. Thapom water canal is an interesting phenomenon – fresh mineral water springs up the middle of a dense jungle collecting in a deep blue pool where trees have fallen creating a truly beautiful sight. The overflowing water for this rich blue pool gurgles out over a line of limestone rocks and eventually opens up into a small canal. As the canal gets closer to the ocean, its riders allowing for the incoming salt water ebbing and flowing with the tide to flow freely into the canal. The mangrove forests that thrive on brackish water have crept inland following this tract of crystal clear freshwater surrounding both banks of the canal. The water has been flowing here for thousands of years and over time has crawled its way out into the open ocean. How the salt and fresh water blend together is what makes this space most special. Typically, when freshwater and saltwater come into contact with one another, they naturally mix together and become brackish (sea water with a lower concentration of salt). But due to the density or possibly some mineral content in the freshwater, when the saltwater and freshwater at Thapom water canal come into contact they form two distinct layers, each keeping their original properties.

The saltwater remains below while the freshwater stays on top. This unique phenomenon is called stratification and can be seen in other places in the world, but in Krabi, this is the only known location where you can observe the phenomenon of saltwater and freshwater fish swimming side by side. Most of the crystal clean freshwater emanating from the earth is off limits to swim in, but closer to the point where the saltwater is in high concentration, swimming is allowed. A number of locals come down to this wonderful refreshing water to cool off from the heat of the day. The pathways leading throughout Thapom water canal takes you through primary jungle where a number of reptiles, birds, mammals, and fish live, making it a great place for nature lovers. Some of the snakes in the area can be a bit dangerous, but will rarely bite – just don’t venture into the jungle unsupervised. Thapom is a great place to visit by motorbike as it is relatively close to Ao Nang, difficult to get lost, and will take you through some breathtaking viewpoints throughout the countryside. Outside the park entrance area, there are a number of restaurants that cook a range of dishes and serve them daily from 10am-6pm.

Exotic Fruits of Thailand A visit to Thailand isn’t complete without experiencing some of the foods here. The tropical fruits are abundant, delicious and fascinating! While you are here, be adventurous and give some of them a try!
Sapodilla (La-mut) - This fruit looks like a large brown plum. The
Thai way is to peel it with a sharp knife directed away from you and with the index finger just in front of the blade, guiding it along. You peel the fruit and then cut it through the middle in a zigzag fashion, for display. Lamut has a subtle flavor that isn’t particularly sweet, and yet seems to taste like brown sugar – if that makes any sense - It’s delicate and delicious!
Guava (Farang) - Looks like a bumpy/wrinkled green apple. Cutting guava is very pretty. Slice ½ way into it, wedge-like, and then slice all around the guava this way. We pulled out the wedges and ate them this way. This doesn’t taste like the Hawaiian fruit. Hawaiian guava fruits (called strawberry guava) are pink and sweeter. These were somewhat bland, crunchy and starchy – a little pear-like.
Rose Apple (Chom-Poo) - This looks like a cross between a thin red pepper and an apple. Cut them into lengthwise slices and eat the thin pieces. These are delicious – sweet and crunchy. They are also called Bell or Mountain Apples.
Dragon Fruit (Gao Mung Gorn) - This is probably the most dramatic-looking of all the Thai fruits, and the outside appearance gives NO indicator of the inside appearance at all! The fruit is a bright pink oblong shape with pointed green leaves springing out from all sides – hence the name, as it DOES look a little dragon-like. Cutting it open down the middle of the fruit will display a white center, filled with tiny black dots. To eat this fruit, scoop out the filling with a spoon. This fruit is moist, sweet, crunchy and delicious! When picking out dragon fruit, “the redder the better” for ripeness! 22

Jackfruit (Khanoon) - This is a fascinating fruit that comes in a huge spindly ball. Opening it up, you can pull out separate pods, which are around 3” long. These pods have large seeds inside that can be peeled, boiled and eaten with salt. The flesh of the fruit has a pungent taste and smell, somewhat crunchy and a little sour/starchy feel to it. Sometimes they are very sweet, and other times they are pretty bland.
Longan (Lam-Yai) – look like big brown grapes on a branch. They
have a thin but hard shell that is easy to break open. The flesh is clear and very sweet with a pit inside. These are delicious but don’t eat too many at one time, as you can get cold sores or even a fever.
Mangostein (Mang-Kut) - Mangosteen is a bizarre looking fruit with a round, deep purple shell. It has flavorful white flesh that is eaten in sections. This has a delicious, distinctive flavor that is also wonderful for juices. Mangostein is becoming better known globally for it’s remarkable healing properties.
Durian (Tu-Rian) - is one of the most bizarre fruits on earth. It is a rich, unique tasting fruit, but to some, it is a putrid-smelling, lousy excuse for a food. It has an extremely strong and unpleasant aroma, as well as a deadly look. Trying this fruit is a step into another world. Durian is quite expensive and due to it’s powerfully imposing smell; it is actually banned from many hotels, busses and planes.
Lychee (Linjee) - Covered by a red, roughly textured rind that is
inedible but easily removed, the inside of a lychee consists of a layer of sweet, translucent white flesh with a grape-like texture. The centre contains a single glossy brown nut-like seed that should not be eaten.
Rambutan (NgoR) - The name is derived from the Malay word, rambut, meaning hair, which is a perfect name. The fuzzy, colorful covering of this fruit is unforgettable. Peeling this dramatic covering away reveals a firm, white, translucent flesh. It tastes like a sweet version of a pear, and is a lovely centerpiece for any dinner table.

Wat Mahathat Watchiramongkhon or for short
‘Wat Bang Thong ‘ A recently finished temple just a short drive from downtown Ao Nang and Krabi town worth visiting when you’re in Krabi. Temples can be found throughout Thailand, in all reaches of the kingdom you can find unique and stunning places of worship. Places that hold a special significance for Buddhists but are well worth visiting as they possess a certain energy and certainly are wonderfully gorgeous to behold. Buddhism is one of the cornerstones in Thai culture. In the South (Krabi included) there is a significant muslim population but overall the country is dominated (approximately 90% of the population) by buddhism. The tradition of worship and giving yourself to the religion has long been a sign of a higher power calling. In fact all Thai men are recommended to join the monkshood to surrender themselves even if only for a short time to a selfless life free of toil and devote themselves within. Almost all Thai man join the monkshood for at least 2 weeks, some decide to join indefinitely. Those that do are worshipped throughout the country. They make their morning rounds throughout a village and are always given a number of goods and food to eat from locals. Monks are asked to come to various business openings, cremations, celebrations and other such events to give blessings. This can be almost always be seen at the highest levels of business throughout Thailand.

Buddhism holds such a significant place in Thai peoples hearts that it is no wonder that there are number of stunning temples found throughout the country. Wat Bang Thong is no exception. Standing at an impressive 70 meters in height it’s central tower can seen for hundreds of meters in all directions. It’s a testament to the reverence and devotion humans have to build stunning works of art in the name of a belief. Wat Bang Thong resembles a Putthakaya style temple, some similarities can be drawn between this style and also of the Aztecs of Mexico.
Just next to the main temple area there is a huge 30 meter tall statue of the immortal monk Luang Pu Thuad as well as the famous king cobra that is believed to have spat out the magical crystal ball on him when he was a baby.
Wat Bang Thong was funded almost entirely by donations from locals who wanted to have a beautiful temple of art in their backyard. There were also donations from Bangkok which helped construction but the vast majority came for locals. The total cost was estimated at around 100 million THB.

You can easily get to Eat Bang Thong if you just follow route 4 out of Krabi until you come to Na Nua (just before Ao Luk) then you turn Right and look for signs for What bang Thong (about 6 kilometres down this road). You can also search on google maps for What Bang Thong and then easily navigate there. Address: Wat Bang Thong, Na Nuea, Ao Luk District, Krabi, 81180, Thailand Hours: 8:00am - 6:00pm

LOI KRATONG November I 2018
39
T
hailand is a magical place where magic and mystery meet, often at the hands of festivals. Loi Krathong is one such festival which is held on the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the Western calendar this usually falls in November. “Loi” means to float and a “Krathong” is a vessel traditionally made from a section of banana tree trunk (although modern-day versions often use styrofoam). These are decorated with elaborately-folded banana leaves, flowers, joss sticks, candles, incense and coins. Many Thai people will even include a nail clipping and strand of hair in the Krathong, as a symbol of letting go of negativity within oneself and sending it off into the abyss. By moonlight, people light the candles and joss-sticks, make a wish and launch their Krathongs out onto water. Nearly every expanse of water on this night, be it a pond, lake, river, or ocean, is filled with the glow and ember of these krathongs, making it a truly spectacular site. It is believed that the Krathongs take away sins and bad luck and carry the wishes that have been made for the new year to start. Indeed, it is the time to be joyful and happy as the sufferings are floated away. The ‘Festival of Lights’ is so named for the orchestra of Krathongs flickering, dancing and dipping in the cadence of the ripples and waves. Celebrants will also light paper lanterns and send them afloat up into the sky, adding to the majestic ambiance that light can bring on a dark night. The festival is believed to have originated in Sukhothai by a court lady named Nopphamat, but scholarly evidence confirmed that this Nopphamat tale comes from a poem written in the early Bangkok period. According to H.M. King Rama IV, writing in 1863, it was a Brahmanical festival adapted by Thai Buddhists in Thailand to honor Buddha, Prince Siddhartha Gautama. The candle venerates the Buddha with light, while the Krathong’s floating symbolizes letting go of all one’s hatred, anger, and defilements. However, many ordinary Thais use the Krathong to thank the Goddess of Water, Phra Mae Khongkha. Today, Loi Krathong is celebrated throughout Thailand with the festivities in Chiang Mai and Ayutthaya being particularly well known. Both Krabi town along the river, and the beaches in Ao Nang, Klong Muang and Koh Lanta annually see a beautiful display of thousands of candlelit baskets and paper lanterns. Krabi town hosts a Krathong festival and fun fair along the riverfront, where you can buy your Krathong at one of the street stands. Traditional dance and folklore shows, beauty contests and even fireworks have become regular features in recent years. The date of Loi Kratong in Krabi is: November 23rd 2018 A word to the wise, make sure you release your Krathong when the tide is receding, so you don’t run the risk of seeing it float right back. You might have to get into Baywatch mode and ‘rescue’ your Krathong back out to sea, and nobody likes soggy pants. Nobody.
Here’s wishing you and yours a wonderful year ahead.

Krabi and Ao Nang markets are one of the best ways to expose yourself to local delights and the ingredients that make them. Krabi and Ao Nang outdoor markets are where the locals go to shop. This means authentic style coupled with amazing prices. With all the tantalizing sights, smells and sounds, Krabi markets are basically the best!
The Fresh Market
Though there are a few different styles of Krabi markets, they all have a few things in common. Food, food and more food! Rows upon rows of fresh produce create bursts of color. Constantly replenished supplies of freshly-caught seafood reminds you how close you are to the ocean (in case you forgot). Sumptuous smells drift from a myriad of ready made treats : soups, curries, fish, meat and desserts. One thing is for sure - you will not leave Krabi and Ao Nang markets hungry. There’s sure to be a few items in the Krabi markets that you don’t recognize, but that’s no reason not to try them! You’ll find vendors selling meat, fish, shellfish, fruit, vegetables and everything in between. It’s easy to see what’s in season, as everything is laid out in glorious displays. Locals bustle around, filling their arms with ingredients for home and business. There’s sure to be a few items in the Krabi markets that you don’t recognize, but that’s no reason not to try them! If your accommodation has cooking facilities, it’ll be hard to leave the Krabi markets without an armful. For those of you just grazing, you’ll have more than your fill with what the vendors have already prepared.

Krabi welcome’s Biennale 2018!!!! It’s a great honour that Thailand has been selected as the hosting country and even more wonderful that Krabi was selected as the hosting province. Biennale is an international art event hosted biannually all around the world. It was founded in 1985 in Venice Italy and continues to this day. Current;Currently the biennale was founded and intended to be hosted biannually only, yet this since changed. While the main commission of Biennale does only officially organise a biannual event. There have been numerous other smaller biennales hosted around the globe featuring regional and international artists.
The festival is meant to be a platform for contemporary art to be showcased while this changed slightly in the 1990’s and more traditional and cultural art was given a spotlight. Now artists from around the world are given a platform to express their identity and vision to the world relatively unhindered or controlled. The 2018 Biennale hosting in Krabi will feature artists from around the world and the art pieces are spread out all over the province. So if you want to visit all fo the art installations you’ll have to get on your motorbike or in your car and get going. the art installations have been put at the following locations: Ao Nang Beach Nopparat Thara Beach Koh Poda Thale Waek Tha Pom Klong Song Nam Than Bak Khorani Waterfall Khao Khanab Nam Krabi Town Railay Bay Koh Klang Biennale is a wonderful showing of art and culture and we are proud to have Krabi featured as the host of the 2018 Biennale. Welcome to Koh Lanta
Located to the south of Krabi and west of Trang province, Koh Lanta is a Thai island that has so far avoided the rapid overdevelopment that has beset fellow Krabi island, Koh Phi Phi. A perfect place to laze the days away, here’s how to get to Lanta Island, what to do and what to expect.
Getting there
Ferries to Koh Lanta depart from the Krabi Passenger Pier in Krabi Town, close to the center of town. The duration of the ferry is around 2 hours, with the seas typically calm and refreshments available on board. Ferries arrive at Saladan Pier on the northern tip of Koh Lanta Yai, from where it’s possible to take a taxi, songteaw or hire a scooter to your hotel.
56
Beaches
For beach bums, Lanta doesn’t disappoint. From Kaw Kwang beach in the north to Kantiang in the south — and just about everywhere in between — visitors are spoiled for choice the variety of beaches available. Each beach has their own unique charms and plus points which ensures that you’re bound to find a beach that’s just right for you; for example, the northern beaches of Kaw Kwang and Klong Dao are great for swimming, Klong Khong in the middle of the island is best for beach bars and the southern beaches of Bamboo and Kantiang Bay are breathtakingly beautiful. Whatever vibe you’re looking for on Lanta, you’re bound to find it.
To do
One of the more popular alternative activities on Koh Lanta island is to visit Lanta Animal Welfare. Established in 2005, Lanta Animal Welfare is dedicated to helping the lives of stray animals on the island, working tirelessly to educate people on the plight of the animals and has extensively sterilized and treated thousands of animals. Visitors can learn about their cause and get to visit some of the animals themselves, and can even take dogs for a walk on the beach. Lanta Old Town, on the eastern shores of Koh Lanta Yai, is also well worth a visit. A picturesque district, its streets contain typical teakwood shop houses that are home to a number of restaurants and souvenir shops selling various clothes and crafts.

Thinking of investing abroad?
Ever consider
Koh Lanta?
Prices are on the move, more and more people coming to Koh Lanta to call this place home and there seems no shortage of new faces in this nature lovers paradise. With the bigger brother and sister to Koh Lanta being Phuket and Koh Samui one can see the potential for Koh Lanta and where it can go if given the space and permission. Koh Lanta still has yet to let itself run as its full fledged neighbours but it has seen it’s fare share of growth over the past 10 years. and it seems like the growth has only just started. Currently the local government of Koh Lanta has restricted new building projects to single villas and small guest houses, this building hiatus is to curb the growth and help maintain the islands natural appeal. The building restriction will eventually lifted and after this the islands’s growth and development will explode with land prices soaring, so if there was a time to get in this is certainly it. Koh Lanta’s recent completion of the Sri Lanta bridge opened Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai to increased traffic and growth opportunities. There is currently a second bridge in the design state of it’s development, construction is scheduled to start in 2020 with an expected completion date of 2024 Although the main beach front plots throughout Koh Lanta are sporting some price tags many of us cannot afford but there are a great number of land plots slightly removed form the beachfront and which offer stunning views and great investment opportunities. If your interested in investing there are some things you should
58
know about buying and selling before you start going down this road. As a foreigner, Thailand tries to restrict foreigners directly owning land outright, (which is a good thing if you ask us). There is not really an option for foreigners to outright have their name on title land deeds, instead they must only rent the land from a Thai national or Thai company for a period of 30 years (which can be renewed 2 additional times, giving a lease term of 90 years). There is another option and that is to set up a company which has a 51% majority of Thai shareholders, but foreigners can still be appointed to being the companies director and therefore having the vast majority of the power and direction of the company. Land can be purchased under a company such as this. The last and final option for property ownership in Thailand is through one of the many condominiums throughout Thailand. In 1979 ( amended 2008) the kingdom passed a law which allowed the ownership of condominium units for foreigners. Title deeds (Thai ‘Chanote’) can be issued in a foreign national’s name, as long as the total living area of the building is kept (51%) in Thai nationals names. This law has opened the door for numerous investors seeking to dive into a lucrative and growing real estate market in Thailand If you’re interested in buying a condominium or would like to know more we recommend you contact Lanta House and Land located in the north of Khong Kong at: Phone: 084 846 9919 Website: www.lantahouseandland.com

Thinking of setting up a company in Thailand?
As we’ve been living in Thailand for over 10 years now we’ve opened and have helped friends open a few companies over the years. There are some rumors about the process, thats it’s difficult, complicated and risky, we’ve not had these issues as we’ve followed the rules every time. So we’ll try to make the process as easy to understand as possible, to be honest it’s not really very complicated. Ok lets first start with the basics, why do you want to open a company? There can be many reasons for this, maybe you want to try your luck at the Thai economy and take you piece of the big growing tourism market in Thailand. Maybe you want a place to retire and want to outright own the land in which your villa or house will be built. Maybe you need a company for extended visa stay requirements. There are many reasons starting a company in Thailand might be the right choice for you. There are 2 main types of businesses which you can start in Thailand.
1. Company Limited 2. Partnership Limited
1. Company Limited is typically a larger entity and more in line with people who wish to expand their operations in the near future, there is a higher capital allowance and more work permits available under a company limited. The cost is higher to start a company limited but if you invest to expand your business, this is like we said earlier the way to go. Also if you intend to opt into the VAT system of Thailand (a system of taxation for companies who do more in profit that 1,800,000 per annum) then you will need a company limited in order to get this licensing. Pro’s: Unlimited work permit expansion Larger capital makeup More commonly recognized among B2B relationships Con’s: More expensive to start up (typically 30,000THB+) 2. Partnership limited is a simple, cheaper alternative to opening

a company limited, and typically recommended for smaller businesses or maybe if you intend to open a business for the sole purpose to outright own a piece of property under your name. Pro’s: Cheaper to start up (typically 15,000-20,000THB) Faster to start up Better for people who don’t really intend to do business Con’s: Less room to expand a partnership limited What is the process for starting a company or partnerships limited? The process is fairly similar, as they are similar entities, just have certain legal restrictions for each which differ but the process for each is nearly the same. The first step is you need to find an accountant, most accountants can also file to open companies for you, so if your says they cannot, maybe find a new accountant. The second step is to find Thai nominees, these should be people you know and trust as they will be in your company and eventually become shareholders. If you don’t know them well, you want to try to get 2-4 (you can have as many as you like but usually 2-4 is an ideal number) different people which don’t know each other. All you need to get from each person is a copy of their ID card as well as their tabian (house registration book). This will need to be brought to your accountant along with the name of the company you wish to register. The accountant will check to see if the name you wish to use has been taken already, if not then they will confirm back to you in 2-3 working days. At this point if you confirm the accountant will go ahead and begin the process of starting either a company limited or partnership limited (depending on which you prefer). Then after your name is registered your accountant should have all company related documents ready for you to sign in 1-2 weeks. Once this is done and you’ve signed all of the necessary documents your company will be ready in about 1-2 more weeks and you’re ready to get things going.
Good luck and get going with your future! 59

UNPLUG ON K
oh Jum Island is still the quintessential destination in Krabi province if you are looking for authentic Thai village life and development that is still a small footprint.
Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades?
KOH JUM
We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family-run character, ranging from the backpackers paradise to luxurious beach villas..... Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages; Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated subdistrict of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth weaving and painting or ‘batik’ as it is known as here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipa-palms. Since all the resorts face West, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat. There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year.

Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare, it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help, we recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with all of our readers. There are 2 ways to get to Koh Jum- by passing ferry or longtail boat. There are ferries that leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, both ferries stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above. The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum- this was our favorite of the 2 methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” - the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat, they are frequent and easy to spot. These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier.
WELL WORTH THE EXPERIENCE
Now, the pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. Then we went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too”, the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70thb fare and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by.
