Speech development

During the first three months of their life, a child is only able to listen to speech, sounds of toys and music and express themselves through sounds like ah, ooh, goo, boo, beh, eh.

Accompany your child’s activities by gentle speech, singing, cooing, soft sounds.

In the second trimester, the child is slowly learning to say vowels such as ah-ah-ah, ooh-ooh-ooh, sing certain sounds and form syllables such as ba-ba, ma-ma and ga-ga.

In the second half of the first year, children start to babble, at first understanding one and later, several words.

They can turn their head towards a familiar person or object and listen and imitate sounds and noises.

Talk to the baby, mimic what they are saying.

Understand your child’s demands and respond to them with a smile, a look, taking their hand, extending the requested object.

Encourage your child to repeat activities and mimic sounds: Come here… Where is?... Look at the kitty… Give to mummy…. This is a bell, ding-ding…

What sound does the bell make?

Games: hide and seek, nursery rhymes, lullabies, etc.

By the end of the first year, they know how to say several words (mama, papa, baba) and understand simple commands (come, don’t).

By the time they are six months old, children are beginning to hold objects and observe them.

Encourage your child to: - observe, - discover partially hidden objects, - touch and reach for objects, - put one block on top of another, - mimic sounds, - show and name objects from a picture.

They use objects to make sounds.

In the second half of the first year, they are able to look for a hidden object (ninth month), they then succeed in finding it (by the end of first year). This is also when they start looking for objects outside of their field of view and hand over objects at command.

They learn by trial and error.

Around the time they are nine months old, children can observe a trace of a pen or pencil on paper.

While they are in your lap, put pencil or pen in your child’s hands, put your hand around theirs and draw lines on paper together.

They are able to draw lines on paper with adult’s assistance.

By the end of first year they can mimic tracing pencil on paper.

Encourage your child to draw lines and scribble on paper on their own.

Familiarising with their surroundings In the first three months, the child is only able to fixedly look at their mother as she is talking to them, with time they slowly start to turn their head in the direction of the sound and follow the moving person with their gaze.

In the second trimester, they start to notice smaller objects on the table.

Show pictures in a book to your child and describe them.

In the second half of the first year, they can differentiate between familiar and unfamiliar people and pay attention when others are talking.

Sing nursery rhymes and lullabies.

They like to play hide and seek games and are able to determine the source of the sound.

By the time they are nine months old, a child can recognise numerous objects from their surroundings.

Games in which you imitate adult and children.

Pointing games.

By the end of the first year, they can clap their hands to familiar songs, mimic simple activities of others (sticking out their tongue, blinking, coughing), point their finger in the direction they want.

At two months, your child can recognise certain shapes and colours from a picture.

Use big, brightly coloured drawings without many details to show to your child.

In the second half of the first year, they like looking at brightly coloured drawings and when asked Where is? they turn their head to look for a familiar object or face.

Conversation: This is a ball. The ball is yellow.

Where is the yellow ball? Where is the yellow car?

They can visually differentiate between a triangle, circle and a rectangle. They can also point to a familiar object in a picture and are able to recognise what is drawn in the picture – faces and objects alike.

By the end of the first year, they are able to notice the difference between two objects of same shape and different colours and can also hand out an object of requested colour.

Read books to your child that contain clear pictures of familiar objects. (Where is the mouse? Point to it.)

Imitate sounds from objects found in pictures (Car goes beep-beep!).

Encourage your child to show who is doing what in the picture.

Encourage your child to imitate sounds and actions in the picture (How does the mouse squeak?).
