Architecture Design Studio I Final Project ARCH 101 | spring
2013
Objective: In a 2 man group; create a structure that responds
uniquely to the context of site. Materials must be removable from site after installation. 2 weeks were given to Finish construction.
Architecture Design Studio I
Concept:

My group partner and I decided to correspond to the curvilinear shape of the wall by creating our own curved structure. Using wooden 2x4’s as a base to hold PVC pipes, i was able to bend the pipes and create beautiful arcs. I later applied translucent fabric to correspond with the wind while creating an overlapping system of fabric throughout the structure.

Kevin Reber Portfolio My teammate created the beautiful deck, bench, and wooden base for the PVC pipes to attach to. I did everything else; bending the PVC pipes and attaching the fabric creating a complex pattern system.

eyebolts, grommets, and s-hooks were used to attach fabric to PVC pipes
the overlapping fabric system casted dark silhouettes that show how the fabric overlaps one another. I left gaps in between each sheet of fabric so wind could blow without rupturing the structure. Wind is like water, if there is a hole or gap it will find its way through.

Midterm Concept:
Kevin Reber Portfolio There are 8 sides to my design Creating an octogon; each side represents a planet in our solar system. The holes in the wings represent the moons that orbit each planet, unfortunately Jupiter has 63 known moons, and I could not fit 63 holes into the wing, so i decided to repeat the number 8 in the structure to have an even distribution of weight throughout the design. thread represents the language of the stars in our solar system and the constallations they create. Closer inspection of the thread, you notice that each language is slightly unique in its own way. Finally I wanted to experiment with light so I added a small light in the center ro represent the sun of our solar system. Mylar was used to cover the wings to give the structure the ability of flight, but in the end i removed the mylar deciding that it ruined the elegance of my design.

Community Center
Community Center Design Concept A Kaleidoscope is defined as an optical instrument in which bits of glass produce symmetrical patterns by multiple reflections using inclined mirrors enclosed in a tube. With each twist in the cosmic universe we will experience a change in the settings of our lives. We adapt and live with the change as we adjust our vision to the new pattern of life set before us.
My design is focused on a kaleidoscope of diverse spatial experiences where different ages and cultures can gather and reflect on their lives. Bringing together the diverse geometric shapes in a kaleidoscope creates structure, showing that no matter how different each shape is; they all are connected somehow and need each other for support. These patterns and shapes make look different, but what makes each shape co-relate to one another is light. Looking through a kaleidoscope is like a journey through light.
“Our days are a kaleidoscope. Every instant a change takes place in the contents. New harmonies, new contrasts, new combinations of every sort. Nothing ever happens twice alike. The most familiar people stand each moment in some new relation to each other, to their work, to surrounding objects. The most tranquil house, with the most serene inhabitants, living upon the utmost regularity of system, is yet exemplifying infinite diversities. -Henry Ward Beecher

Community Center
Objective For my design my primary concern is bridging the community center with Redding Elementary because I believe the children are the future of the community. Bridging both together will also open opportunities for after school and before school programs. The school courtyard can also be shared by both the school and community center, bringing more activity to Frank Norris alley. Frank Norris St used to be a one way street where traffic would enter the west side of the alley and exit on the east side. A tragic accident occured that involved students of Redding Elementary. After this tragedy, the city decided to change the flow of traffic in Frank Norris St, having vehiles enter from the East and exit the West. Although this change has reduced the risk of collisions, accidents still happen and has to be put to a stop. Creating the bridge will create a safer way of transitioning without interrupting vehicular traffic. Crossguards are used to help guide the students across the street safely, my proposal is to remove the left wing of the school and add a story to Redding Elementary to create more space for the courtyard and the bridge connecting the school and community center. Doing so will create more space for the school courtyard and make it easier and SAFER for students transitioning to the community center/future indoor soccer field.
