POWER TO THE YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE BY

John-Daniel Josephs

THE CITIZENS OF SOUTH-AFRICA are reflecting on June 16, the lives that were lost in Soweto 1976. Today 44 years ago we still feel the reverberation of freedom echoing in our hearts every time we stand up for justice and freedom. We are no different than those 500 youths that were killed on June 16, 1976. Because our fight remains their fight it is the fight that we want to be treated not only equal but with equity and dignity. We see youths in Washington, New York, Berlin and London taking to the streets marching in solidarity saying black people must be treated as equals. They are saying black lives matter!

SOUTH AFRICANS ARE NOT TAKING LEAVE IN LOCKDOWN - COMPANIES ARE GETTING WORRIED JAYLEE GERTSE MANAGING EDITOR jayleegertse@gmail.com

WITH RECREATIONAL TRAVEL still restricted, South Africans have cancelled their leave. For companies, the accumulation of leave days pose a fi n a n c i a l r i s k - a n d c o u l d c a u s e operational problems when everyone wants to take leave at once. According to a new survey, many SA companies have changed their holiday policies to adopt to the Covid-19 crisis. With nowhere to go during the national lockdown, many South Africans have cancelled their leave for the winter holiday. Now companies are getting worried about the build-up of leave days. When the employees

eventually leave the company or are retrenched, these days have to be paid out in cash. Accumulated leave is a liability and must be reflected on the company's balance sheet, warns Pamela Stein from the law firm Webber Wentzel. “It is really important that people take time off for their wellbeing and health, even if it does not involve a long holiday that involves travel. During the pandemic, we may need to rethink our approach to holidays a little. Staycations and more long weekends may be a way of using leave up,” Pamela adds.

Last night, people got saved, baptised, and were touched by God," Joshua Lindquist of Awaken the Dawn said in a video. "This was full of hopelessness. The spiritual climate has completely shifted.” In another video, a preacher leads the crowd in reflection and prayer - urging

them to listen to God for guidance.” Take a moment to listen and pray… to ask what God is saying to you right now at this moment. God is always speaking but sometimes we are too loud and busy to hear," the preacher adds. POSITIVES OF THE LOCKDOWN. I have never spent so much quality time with my family like in this time. Supporting one another has proven to be a positive. To the ones who stayed BY Jaylee Gertse

TO ALL THE DEAR FATHERS, orking in children and youth ministry I reflect upon all the shattered hearts, sad, angry or even nonchalant facial expressions when the word ‘father’ is expressed. I’m reminded of all the heart-breaking narratives of children who are so in need of the presence of their dad, but also children who want absolutely nothing to do with their father due to his absence; whether emotionally or physically. Therefore, today I would like to celebrate the ones who stuck around.

W

Dadda, Daddy, Dad, Papa, Pops -your different names are evidence of the versatility of your character. Thank you to every dad who strives to be the best father. Some of you didn’t have much guidance on how to be one, yet you’re still out here correcting the mistakes of the generation that came before you. For that, I salute you. To all the ones who made mistakes, admitted their faults and fixed them, you are amazing. You are celebrated for working

tirelessly to physically provide, by putting food on the table, pay school fees and ensure that your children are well cared for. Beyond that, well done for considering the emotional and spiritual needs of your children, by spending quality time with them, making memories, teaching them valuable life lessons or skills; or by modelling biblical character and prayers. To all the fathers who teaches their daughters that she’s worthy of respect, love and care and teaches their sons that respecting a woman and society in general is what will make of them a ‘cool dude’, you are a game changer. I commend you for changing the negative narratives around fatherhood. May you be blessed and inspired to keep on doing the best you can. Your sons and daughters will certainly benefit from the investment of your presence in their lives.

I’m encouraged by men and fathers who aim to mentor, guide, inspire and teach not only their own children but also the boys and girls, in their communities who desperately need the presence of a father. To all the fathers who work hard, to build a good life for their children, we salute you. To all the fathers wondering if they’re doing a good enough job, you are. May you be the best father you could be. You are loved, appreciated and needed. You are the heroes of our time. So, to the one who stayed, when they could’ve left. I salute you all, Happy Father’s Day to all dad’s but especially to my daddy.

The Poet Tree

T H E B AT T L E ( Y O U T H D A Y , S A ) BY Noventwembi Naphakade

I was too young to remember

Because to those who are brave enough,

Yet I have inherited this.

To those who know that they must stand up and fight,

I played no part as an innocent child,

The future has been given –

But I must face the consequences.

They are the inheritors of the rainbow nation.

Because the wounds have not healed.

The journey will not be an easy one,

We try to make it better,

Its nature is such that it will not be over quickly.

But the hurt, the bitterness, runs so deep.

But as soldiers we accept the challenge –

Sometimes it feels like we’re fighting a losing battle.

Together we stand, together we can be victorious.

It is an undeserved part that we play

We accept the past as part of our history,

In trying to undo the injustice.

Yet we do not live by it.

It is a burden, a sorrowful load

Forming new links and relationships every day,

That we never asked to carry on our shoulders.

We find strength in our shared humanity.

As the youth of the new millennium

As children of Africa, united,

We do not have the experience, the memories

The burden becomes lighter.

To guide or hinder us on our journey –

The future has been handed to us

We see the world through untainted eyes.

And it is a bright one.

And yet we feel it, we feel it every day.
We sense the anger and the pain.
The blood spilt has dyed society,
It is a dark shadow, always in the back of our minds.

 And yet, there is hope;
A light shines that cannot be put out.
It has burned throughout the dark night of the past,

And continues to give courage to the youth today.

“And yet, there is hope;
A light shines that cannot be put out.
It has burned throughout the dark night of the past,
And continues to give courage to the youth today.”

YOU'VE LIKELY BEEN SAYING "CHEESE" for the camera since you were a kid. However, in the early 19th century, people attempted to capture the ideal expression by saying "prunes." Apparently, the cue helped keep subjects' mouths "prim," according to the Washington Post. Former Full House stars Mary-Kate and Ashely Olsen have reportedly used the same trick for years in order to present the perfectly relaxed pout to the paparazzi.

METHOD: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Sift together the dry ingredients and add the nuts into a bowl. In a separate glass bowl, melt the butter and add the sugar, and stir it. Allow the mixture to cool off before adding the vanilla essence and eggs. Combine the dry and wet ingredients. Do not over-mix the batter. Line a deep baking tray with baking paper and lightly grease. Pour in the batter and place into a hot oven set to 180°C for 20-35 minutes.

PLENTY OF PEOPLE LIKE TO ENJOY A LITTLE WASABI with their sushi—or a lot, depending on their tolerance for the stuff. But it turns out that real wasabi is pretty pricey (around $160 per kilogram), which is why 99 percent of what's called wasabi in the U.S. is actually a mix of horseradish and hot Chinese mustard, plus green dye to give it the right colour, according to a report published in The Atlantic.

THERE'S A REASON WHY IT'S NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO LAUGH when someone is tickling you—and it has nothing to do with the situation being overwhelmingly funny. Instead, your body is likely employing a natural defence mechanism. Scientists from the University of Tuebingen in Germany found that when we're being tickled, the part of the brain that anticipates pain is triggered. Because our brain thinks we're in trouble, we might strike at whoever is tickling us or we might laugh, which is a sign of submission.

CAPE TOWN PLAYERS SELDOM SURVIVE IN JOZI “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.

BY Eleazar Rodgers

A

FTER A FEW MONTHS, finally managing to settle, the level of excitement within me was raging.

I couldn’t wait to get on that pitch to start playing. Mamelodi Sundowns did very well during the previous season. This meant it was going to be challenging to prove myself. In my position - which is Centre Forward or Striker as we call it these days we had 6 other players competing to be in the starting line-up. It felt like I needed to climb Mount Everest before earning the opportunity, even though the Coach guaranteed that he would at least give me a fair opportunity to play. I knew it was not going to be easy. Another reason why, even before I made the decision to join Mamelodi Sundowns, "Cape Town players seldom survive in Jozi" was in the back of my head. This statement has unfortunately proven to be true with players from Cape Town in the past. This was one of the times when I was most grateful for the people in my life, who have invested and encouraged me to
