Krimika Parekh

Preface Personal Statement In this portfolio I would like to present my academic work done during my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree as well as someof my professional works carried out during my professional career. The bachelor studies were mainly focused on Design based along with materials. The Master’s work comprised of varied scale projects which helped me understand scale of the project with documentations. Some of my professional works included on site execution as well as client briefs. This allowed me to understand different fundamentals of design and construction at various stages in my studies as well as my career. The interest in architecture also lead me to push my self to some new limits and boundaries to gain theoretical as well as practical knowledge. Wishing to expand my career path, I am now seeking an employment to enrich my international, professional and cultural experience.

UMEED, WOMEN SHELTER HOME

Domestic Violence Against Women is an age old phenomenon. Women were always considered weak, vulnerable and in a position to be exploited. Cultural mores, religious practices, economic and political conditions may set the precedence for initiating and perpetuating domestic violence, but ultimately committing an act of violence is a choice that the individual makes out of a range of options. The idea was to create a space for woman to feel secured and safe. The function of the entire complex is to help the de-stressed women in their bad times. The complex is designed in a way where a these women are healed psycologically with help of nature. Certain women who bears child are given special provision i.e. Child Shelter . Low budget construction has been taken in account where use of plastic bottles has been used to make walls of the complex. A central pallidum has been made to support functions like a market place so that these women can earn for themselves.

UMEED, WOMEN SHELTER HOME

In this group project the task assigned was to redevelop Old Royal Adelaide Hospital into a Luxury Hotel. The challenge was to build a structure without demolishing any existing structural members. The whole process of this studio was to document the entire project with its construction details. The major challenge in this project was the linearity of the site which was then further given a break by massing in the facade. Another task was to understand the relationship formed between Art Gallery and the Hotel by giving an internal journey from the reception lobby to the Art Gallery to make an experience for the traveller.

UNITING COMMUNITIES

3

The proposal for Uniting Communities development is a radically mixed use development situated at Kent Town and positioned along North Terrace road. The Kent Town precinct has been identified as a ‘significant high density, mixed use, and regeneration opportunity’. Being a home for 170 creative industry businesses – the Kent Town creative and digital media industries have been also identified as priorities for the Council’s Business and Economic. Uniting Communities is providing appropriate, compassionate, wide-range of volunteer help and individual support to all people. Each element of individual building has its own distinct functionality with an outdoor terrace. This building is all about creating a place to unite all different neighbourhoods within one complex . The complex offers the users an integrated service space which is supported by the community and the locals.

THE PLAYFUL WALLS

The research topic undertaken in AAD Research Practice 2018 is about the Playful walls. The research takes place to understand the dynamics and nature of partition walls in a gallery and seminar rooms. The nature of the axes of the partition walls has been carefully studied along with if there is any shift of planes of the partition walls how would the space be created and would it become a habitable/useable space. With my particular interest in perceiving the nature of the space, how a sense of place could be observed by a human sight if the axes of the planes shift and how would it influence our experience with different space forms than usual. Along with this the material exploration has been done to give an experience to the space differently.

4

Views of the SASA Gallery, Australia which shows the movement of the walls and how can it make one experience SPATIAL change.

DYNAMIC PAVILION

The given task was based on speculation of a feature from the Uniting communities and to experiment with the feature. The experiment could also lead to no concrete conclusion but understanding the process was quiet important. With the given task, the proposal given by me was a Pavilion which is kinetic in nature and dynamic aesthetically. The pavilion formed different spaces as per the users need. This pavilion with different colours play a very vital role in recovering. The use of the colours inspired from the NATURE helps the diabled people to heal faster. The kinetic movement of these wooden logs makes it very intriguing for people, which could be used as a pavilion or an entry gate for people to get to the city center. This structure would bring people to expericence the motion made by this structure.

MECHANISM OF THE PAVILION

CHOREOGRAPHY_OF_DAILY_LIFE

The task was to expand the horizons towards the urban thinking for Kent Tow and propose a vision. A series of conceptual ideas were put forth for the scheme of the Kent Town where different schemes designed throughout the year were put together. The task was to even find how these nodes were located and connected as well as reinforced by urban moves in the design problem. To propose urban moves and activate the spaces in- between following aspects were taken in consideration: • • • • •

Infrastructure Public (+ private ) transport Legibility and permeability Public and green/open spaces Commercial, retail, culturally and socially diverse facilities • Safe spaces, security and demographic sensitivity

INSIDE_OUT The client is an industrial designer by profession and an active member of uniting communities which was premeditated in my free space proposal. He is not more of a social person though he conducts small studio seminars for all the young and old. He even holds small workshops for people to exhibit his designer work and inspire them. In my proposal I wanted to explore the idea of a Mobius band which means only one side and one boundary. The 3 ideas taken under consideration during project was: 1. Inside out with the greenscapes ( that of a mobius bond ) 2. 3 ways of light filtering – through patterns, in verticality and horizontally 3. Volumetric play which looks through the permeability of visual connect

ZERO ENERGY HOUSE

The challenge was to make a portable Zero energy house for Adelaide. This exercise helped us to understand different construction materials used to build a house which would keep the house at room temperature throughout the year. Different size of openings were made according to the Summer and Winter Sunpaths. Being a portable house, the entire house was made on the pedestals and the joinaries were made in such a way that it could be easily detached and attached with minimum human effort. This Design and Documentation exercise helped us how can composite materials help us to make eco-friendly house.

PROFESSIONAL WORK

The client required a modern interior for his 3BHK house at Andheri , Mumbai with an economical budget. The interiors were designed as per the Vaastu as per client’s wish. The challenge in this residential was the Girl’s Bedroom, the passage area and the Kitchen. Girl’s bedroom quiet a compact room where there was not much space and was quiet discomforting. Placing the mirror on the wardrobe made the room look a little bigger as well as the side tables were made to be foldable tables to give more space to move. The wooden polished ceilings and lights gave a beautiful view to the passage which was 3.3m long and it didn’t have any external source of light. The use of calm colors in contrast of wood and mirrors made the ambience of the house warm welcoming.

PROFESSIONAL WORK

The client required a modern interior for her 2BHK house at Andheri , Mumbai. The Client’s wish was to give the whole house a Rajasthani look but as well as easy to maintain. The colors used were bold and calm in contrast as per the theme. A lot of elemental pieces were made for the creating the theme. The theme was shown in furnitures by carving wood which gave the Rajasthani touch. The dining table seating was made like a Indian Rajasthani style seating. At the entrance was the hidden bar with jaali work on the door as the client wanted the bar to be hidden.

PHOTOGRAPHY

The Inverted Tripod I would like you to step into my world ‘The Inverted Tripod’ to show you a perspective through my lens. My journey began about a decade ago, when I held a camera for the first time. My goal is to show simple day-to-day objects in a more imaginative and creative way. My journey has been through extensive self-teaching. My passion has led me to a steep learning curve. The learning experience was fairly spartan. Since childhood, I loved travelling to different places with my family and I always tried to capture the beauty of the place. During one of my travel experiences, I came across a sight of a scenic view which I wanted to capture as a memory to cherish. Unfortunately, I couldn’t photograph the beauty as I lacked the technique. This spurred me to take to photography as my passion. Ever since that day, I have learnt and tried to capture different perspectives which have raised my curiosity levels in a unique and creative manner. I have pushed beyond my comfort levels to experiment with different styles and compositions rather than having the same traditional approach. Here I present to you some of my best work pieces that I have been most inspired by.
