ARAM VOICE CELEBRATION OF DON BOSCO’S FEAST

Don Bosco College, Maram celebrated the feast of Don Bosco on 4 February, 2011 with much pomp and show.

The day began with the Holy Mass, presided over by Rev. Fr. Joseph Pampackal SDB, former Economer of Salesians Province of Dimapur, India. In his homily he recounted many incidents in the life of Don Bosco and the marvels of his educative project which is continued even today by the Salesian Fathers and Sisters and the other members of the great Salesian family. He also pointed out that Don Bosco College Maram is ‘a miracle of God.’ The celebration was also marked by a cultural programme. Shri K. Raina, honourable MLA, Tadubi constituency, graced the programme as the Chief Guest. Mr. Raina in his speech exhorted the students to grasp every opportunity and form themselves to be great leaders in society. He assured the college community of his continuous support and concluded his speech saying, “Long live Don Bosco, Maram.” The colourful cultural programme enthralled the people through various items such as magic show, songs, dance and skit.

In the wise words of the great writer, Joseph Addison, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body”. Reading is not for its own sake, but for the sake of growth, growth in every sphere of life-values, morals, information and wisdom.

Learning is the process of constant updating in a world that is ever changing. Reading gives new views on life, news of the world, opinions of people and information about discoveries. Perhaps reading is the most important tool in all academic advancement. The initial enthusiasm and interest in reading and learning new things impart practical training. The knowledge of life acquired through reading books widens vision. Knowledge is said to be power, and the chief source of this knowledge is books. Good books give us pure delight and ennoble our minds and souls. Likewise, reading is delight to youth, comfort to the old, friend to the friendless and a companion to the lonely.

So, begin to read and try to inculcate the habit of reading. However busy, keep aside some time of the day for reading which influences thought.

Thus the hours spent in reading are investment for tomorrow. Hence, read, learn and apply your mental strength with positive outlook.

VOICE From the Desk of the Vice Principal

Dear friends, I am reminded of the song, ‘Modern times have brought us many comforts. People live in wealth and luxury...’. And the song continues saying in the midst of all these there is a call for a quality of life. These days are busy times with the farmers tilling and preparing the ground to sow seeds for the next crops, students preparing for the examinations, accountants hurrying with their paper works.

I would like to draw to your attention to seed, which is the source of life. A seed reminds us of new life, a new beginning, a new start. The recent Lui-ngai-ni that was celebrated at Ukhrul speaks of this. The feast is an occasion for the people belonging to varied cultures of Manipur o come together and thank God for the good harvest in the past year and implore His blessings for the coming year. The seed symbolize human life in all its aspects.

The seed has all the potentialities of a mighty tree. Before it becomes a mighty tree, it undergoes processes of being buried, crushed and of death - then new life begins.

We are already in the second month of 2011. The ground that we prepared in the past year 2010 will tell us of what type of fruit we shall reap this year and the process we undergo today will tell us of what kind of fruit we can expect next year. This is specially true of the students who are on the threshold of their Council and University Examinations. The labour, hard work, sacrifice etc put in will give them fruits accordingly.

The modern times with all its comforts continue to challenge us. If we do not strive for better life, we can comfortably sit and relax with very poor life and poor academic results, but if we do seek and aspire for higher things in life then we need to put efforts, we must be crushed and die like the seed. The mighty little seed teaches us a wonderful lesson.

This is the story of many Bosconians who in the past years had excelled in their studies and are placed in good position in the society today.

“If you plant honesty you will reap trust If you plant goodness, you will reap friend If you plant humility, you will reap greatness If you plant perseverance, you will reap victory If you plant consideration, you will reap harmony If you plant hard work, you will reap success If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation If you plant openness, you will reap intimacy If you plant patient, you will reap improvement If you plant faith, you will reap miracle

If you plant dishonesty, you will reap distrust If you plant selfishness, you will reap loneliness If you plant pride, you will reap distraction If you plant envy, you will reap trouble If you plant laziness, you will reap stagnation If you plant bitterness, you will reap isolation If you plant greed, you will reap lost If you plant gossip, you will plant enemies If you plant worries, you will reap wrinkles If you plant sin, you will reap ill.”

So be careful what you plant now. It will determine what you will reap tomorrow. The seed you now scatter will make life worth or bitter, your lives or the one who will come after you someday. You will enjoy the fruit or you will pay for the choices you plant today.

VOICE Fr. Med’s journey to heaven

Wrapped in the soft mesh of the chilly grey-blue morning air, a group of Don Bosco College Maram students journeyed to Dimapur, Salesian College to partake in the funeral service of Rev. Fr. John Med SDB. He was one of the prominent Salesian pioneers of India particularly North-East. Throngs of people consisting of the priests, religious and

well-wishers came to pay their last respect to the mortal remains of the departed holy soul.

Associates of Fr. Med expressed their deepest sorrows and sentiments at the loss of the zealous missionary. Valuing him to be a saint they returned to their hearth.

REPUBLIC DAY OBSERVED

On 26 January 2011, the volunteers of NSS Units I, II and III along with the Programme Officers Sr. Stella Thomas SMMI, Sr. Jaya CCV and Sir Christopher and some lecturers observed the Republic Day at the college premises. Rev. Fr. P.O. Sebastian SDB, the Rector of the college hoisted the National Flag after which the entire assembly in unison chorused the National Anthem. To mark the occasion a speech competition was conducted for the NSS Volunteers on the topic, “Patriotism.”

The speakers recounted the rich legacy of the great patriots of our country like Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh etc. One of the speakers said, “Patriotism is deeply getting rooted when we inculcate in ourselves the spirit of responsibility, honesty and sincerity in our own duties.” Speaking in the same strain Rev. Sr. Rosemary Kazhiia, the Vice Principal in her message defined Patriotism as “the sense of belonging.” The Vice Principal later gave away the prizes to the winners.

VOICE VOLUNTARY BLOOD DONATION CAMPAIGN

A one day Awareness Campaign and Voluntary Blood donation Camp was held at the HRC Hall of Don Bosco College, Maram, on 11 February.

It was organised by the Association of Voluntary Blood Donors, Manipur Dept. of IHBT, RIMS and supported by the Manipur State Aids Control Society and State Blood Transfusion Council.

Basic Blood Science, Benefits of Voluntary Blood Donation and Blood Bank and its functions were the topics discussed. It was indeed an exciting experience for all the participants and even those who were sceptical about blood donation went home enlightened and well informed. Here is what a donor who made her maiden donation had to say: “Indeed I have a wonderful feeling of saving someone’s life. I know one day it will go to a needy person. Given a chance, I’d donate again.

Live and let live.”

The programme attended by 250 students of the College started at 10:30 am. A 14 member team comprising of doctors, nurses and technicians from RIMS managed the day’s programme. Rev. Fr. Benny James SDB, the Principal of the College in his welcome speech applauded the team for their commendable service to the state while warmly welcoming them to the family. He also pointed out that the campaign was the first of its kind in the history of the college.

MY EXPERIENCE OF THE REPUBLIC DAY PARADE AT NEW DELHI It was with a great sense of pride that I took part in 62 Republic Day parade at the Nation’s capital. The National festival was preceded by a month long Republic Day Parade Camp organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports under Smt. Sarada Ali Khan, the Programme Advisor of the NSS. During the Camp, we had parade practice, academic session and cultural programme. We also visited some famous places of India. We

were also thrilled to meet the President, the Prime Minister and the Vice President of our country. It was a great learning experience for me and I have benefited a lot in regard to personality development, leadership skill, discipline, time management, team spirit etc. during the rather hectic days at the camp. I am extremely grateful to the NSS unit-I and the college authorities who have given me this exposure.

INAUGURATION OF THE RED RIBBON CLUB

For the first time in the district of Senapati, ‘RED RIBBON CLUB’ was innuagurated at Don Bosco College, Maram on 10 February 2011. Dr. Loli Mao, Director of the District Hospital Senapati presided over the innuagural function.

VOICE Jubilee- Celebration of God’s Faithfulness

“He will keep you firm to the end irreproachable on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is Faithful...” 1Cor 1:8-9

The year long global celebration and eventful grace filled journey of Jesus Youth Jubilee culminated in an intense time of rallying together of active members bringing together more than 20,000, with the presence of His Eminence Ivan Cardinal Dias, bringing in filial greetings of the Holy Father. More than two decades of prayers, commitment, sacrifice and visions has made possible what is now a reality. Looking back at the growth of the Jesus Youth movement we can only agree that the Holy Spirit has taken the movement beyond what anyone could imagine and we see God’s faithfulness as He said, “He will never forsake us and abandon us” for “He is the same yesterday; today; and forever” (Heb:13:5-8)

Shelton Pinheiro, co-ordinator of Rexband, while presenting the ‘past of the Movement’ recalled the nascent stages of the movement and compared it to a tree being nurtured by the creator Himself. Rev. Fr. Abraham Pallivathukal SJ, Dr. Edward, Prof. C.C Alicekutty, the key persons behind the movement from its birth recounted the many blessings and graces they have received in and through the movement.

They testify the unfailing guidance of God they experienced in facing the challenges and difficulties on their way saying that “Our

God is a faithful God”. The oft repeated guidance of the Lord to the movement that He would guide it ‘step by step’ into depths of missions has been resounding in the conference with new relevance. “Even when I walk into the valley dark and cold never will I fear for you are near”. Ps 23:4

Our God who led us step by step has beautiful plans for each one of us. Many Jesus Youths left their homes, their bright career their lucrative jobs and responded to God’s call to be missionaries. Rev. Fr. Mathew Abraham CSsR is one among whom the Lord called to be his priest. He was a physician before. He is now the Executive Secretary of Health Commission of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI). Santhosh J. Chitillpilly and his family left their homeland, Kerala and his rich income for a mission to Agra. He testified God’s providence in their lives. Dony Peter responded to God’s call to spread His Good News leaving behind his bright career. He is now the Asst. coordinator of Jesus Youth International Team and a renowned retreat preacher. He is happy to what he is today.

“I have plans for you; plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster...” says the Lord in Jer. 29:11. He will keep us from all hidden dangers and from all deadly quicksand and will guard as the apple of His eye.

The blind but total YES I said on 11th Sept. 2008 in response to the call to serve the movement as the Core Team Leader and coordinator of JY Manipur led me to a delightful lands and enriching experiences.

I knew not what lies ahead of me but the encouragement and prayerful assurances of Siljo Thomas, Coordinator of JY India and others present made me convince that “if He calls me He will take care of me”, for He will hide me in the shadow of his hands (Is.52:16) and will never let me be defeated and be put to shame and give me success for “it is the God of heaven who will give success”(Neh. 2:20) I was blessed to go to Kerala (God’s own country) three times for very important Jesus Youth Programmes and another two in Shillong within this three years. I have learnt to tell my problems how

BIG is my God rather than telling my God how big my problems are.

We can trust God because His characters match to what he says and because he accomplishes his purpose in us. “The mountains may depart and the hills be removed but my steadfast love shall not depart from you” (Is. 54:10) “I have loved you with an everlasting love. I have continued my faithfulness to you (Jer. 31:3) my unfailing love and mercy cares (Lam. 3:22), you shall be my treasured possession” says the Lord. JUBILEE IS INDEED PROCLAIMATION AND CELEBRATION OF GOD’S FAITHFULNESS.

Welcome to the World of Jokes A man was found crying on a river bank. Knowing him to be a cheerful man, a passer-by enquired if something was wrong.

Under sobs, he said, “My son died yesterday, but I had no time to cry for him, so I’m doing it now.”

Once Rajiv Gandhi, Amitabh Bachan and Hinduja were discussing about making a movie. After a long discussion, Hinduja said, “I will direct the movie.” With enthusiasm Amitabh said, “Ham acting karenge. Meri acting skill sab koi jante hei na?” The two nodded. Hinduja and Amitabh now looked at Rajiv and expecting him to finance the project asked, “Aur aap kya karenge?” With marked interest he replied, “Ham dekhenge.”

An angel appeared to three black NEGROS and asked them for a wish.

1st Negro: I would like to become fair and lovely. His wish was granted.

2nd Negro: He also asked for the same gift. His wish was also granted.

3rd Negro: He began to laugh unceasingly. So the other two Negros shouted at him and called him a fool because he did not asked for the wish at an instant. He then laughed at the two and asked the angel his wish, “I WANT TO MAKE THIS TWO BLACK AGAIN.” Pages:

VOICE YOUTH FOR SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION

The AICUF Unit of Don Bosco College, Maram (DBCMaram) organized a residential programme with the theme ``Youth for Social Transformation`` on 4th and 5th February. The programme was also an orientation programme for the AICUFers to know AICUF in depth with Mr. Niraj Lakra, the National Full timer as the main resource person. The programme began on the eve of 4th February with 65 AICUFers registered for the programme, Fr. Benny James SDB the State Adviser and the Principal of the College; Sr. Deepa Mathew FCC, the Unit Animator and Sir Amit Kumar. The AICUFers welcomed the full timer and had some ice-breaking sessions. In the evening a movie ``Hotel Ruanda`` was shown; a movie on social issues - conflict between two African tribes and how it affects the locals.

On 5 Feb 201, the day began with aerobics, morning jobs and the Eucharistic celebration which was presided over by Rev.Fr. P.O.Sebastian, the Rector of the College. The programme of the day began with the Inaugural ceremony with Mr. R.K.Peter, President of Marams as the chief guest. The AICUFers had sessions on ``Youth as an Agent of Change`` by Miss. Monica TA of the Department of History, Don Bosco College, Maram; ``Know AICUF`` by Mr. Niraj the National full timer and ``Action Plan for AICUFers`` by Sr. Deepa Mathew FCC, the Unit Animator. In the evening there was a cultural programme with competitions on Cultural Costume Show where the different cultures of North -East was presented before the guests of the evening. A debate was conducted between the boys and girls on the topic, ``Women are Equal to Men`` were the girls stood for motion whereas the boys opposed the statement. Finally it was agreed upon that women and men are equal and it is the support and cooperation to one another that makes society

a wonderful place to live in and life so beautiful.

There was also a Skit Competition based on the theme of the residential programme itself- ``Youth for Social Transformation`` where the participants were given an opportunity to stage the way they would bring a change in the society. It was indeed a great success and was so promising to see youngsters taking pledge to become a catalyst for the change in the society. The programme ended with the report presentation on the residential programme which was also an analysis of the programme. The programme was indeed a grant success; students took up in charge and proved that they can be strong pillars of a better society and a better tomorrow.

AICUF is a youth movement among the university students. It is youth who plans and executes their actions for a better society. Such programmes certainly enrich their personality and experience. Who is says that they are not the pillars of tomorrow?

VOICE A Trip to Kerala

The long awaited dream came to a reality on 21 December 2010, when a group of Jesus Youth from Don Bosco College Maram, along with the coordinator Br. Jacob and Sr. Annie (Sister Animator) started their journey to see the dream land Kerala, ‘God’s on country’. We were representing the Jesus youth family of Don Bosco College Maram for the Silver Jubilee of Jesus Youth where 23 thousand youngsters gathered. On 24 night we reached Kerala and we went to different families to experience the Christmas celebration as a part of cultural exchange. On 26th of December we the Jesus Youth stepped down the blessed land known as ‘Pala’ where St. Alphonsa’s body is buried, and there Rev. Fr. Benny (Principal of Don Bosco College Maram) welcomed us and celebrated mass for us. From 28 December to 1 January we took part and witnessed the great Silver Jubilee celebration of the Jesus Youth, and there we really experienced the power of the Holy Spirit. On the first day of

the year, that is 1 January 2011, we went to experience the mesmerizing beauty of ‘God’s own Country’... We went to Cochin, there we had boating. On 2 January 2011, we had a pilgrimage to Malayatoor, where St. Thomas spent his time in prayer. We climbed the mountain to receive blessings and offer prayers. We participated in the celebration of the Eucharis in order to make our pilgrimage more spiritual. On 3 January, the day we were looking for the trip to ‘Veega Land a land of dreams and fun. In that place we changed ourselves and took the role of kids, birds, fishes and animals...... It was one of the memorable days of our trip. On 4 January we went to Trissur and visited the place where St. Thomas first reached in Kerala and performed the miracles. There we had shopping too. At night 9 o’clock with painful hearts, with tears in our eyes we said ‘good bye’ to Kerala......Yes it was indeed an enriching and beautiful experience, we had in ‘God’s own country’.
