Hello, my friends and loyal readers! Welcome to the RAIN issue. If you know me, you know that I love the rain, cloudy days, a nice cool breeze/wind, and overall cover from the sun. I have tons of rain photos and have written lots of poetry about it over the years, and I’m excited to get to share some of it with you. I’m also excited to get to showcase some awesomely talented artists expressions about the rain. If you missed out on getting in on this issue, rest assured that I plan to do another issue with this theme--that’s how much I love it. Without further adoo-doo, I give you The Rain Issue. I hope you love it! I love you all and always will, Kris

Gretchen Coleman Raindrops~ Little raindrops falling down, here, and there, and on the ground. Making music all around, little raindrops falling down. Drip, Drip, Drop, April showers, falling on silver flowers. Angels teardrops on my face, falling in the moonlit grace. Little raindrops are falling, to the Earth’s silent calling. Falling, falling all around, silently hitting the ground. Little raindrops falling down, here, and there, and on the ground. Making music all around, little raindrops falling down.

Janet Burns Humid breeze comes in ... ‘cross window sill, summer storm breaks the silence of still. By candle glow ... jasmine incense burns ... lovers embrace, desire yearns. wine dipped finger tips, trace and tease ... slightly parted moistened lips. Butterfly kisses on lids of closed eyes, mouth on curves of neck ... bring on contented sighs. Jasmine and musk mix, sweet scent of glistening skin, touch this fire ... taste this sin. Hands caress ... small of back, bend of knee, bodies arch in ecstasy. Twisted sheets, legs entwined, pleasure found ... then defined. Rain dances on roof, in rhythm slow, lulls all to sleep ... satiated in afterglow.

Rain was always an “event” when I lived in El Paso, TX (where I was born and raised). El Paso is desert, a dry heat in the summer and a biting cold in the winter. So, in the spring and early summer when it rained, it was an “event”. The smell of the rain in the El Paso night air is like no other; a sweet, wet, coolness that wraps its arms around you. The streets glisten at night, while the clouds hang low and sway across the sky. But the thunder and lightning is what I miss the most. The thunder would crack with a loud sharpness that could make you jump out of your seat and soon after was the flash of lightning that would light up the neighborhood. I miss that. I moved to Seattle, WA and there was rain, well more like annoying drizzles, but there was no thunder, no lightning. Just the dreary rain clouds during the day and sogginess at night. Rain wasn’t an event, just a nuisance. Now, I’m in San Diego, CA and, well, there’s just no rain, but lots of sun.

I’ll be your sunshine after the rain I’ll be your laughter through the pain I’ll be the hug when you want to cry I’ll be your life when you want to die I’ll be your smile through the tears I’ll be your protection from the fears I’ll hold your hand you need the connection I’ll be your map when you’ve lost your direction I’ll be the light in the darkest places I’ll fill in the gap in the loneliest spaces I’ll be all the things you need me to be Just as long as you need me

Speech Communication Tips: Volume 7 This section is dedicated to the invaluable information I received in my speech communication class back in the summer of 2009. This was the class that I most dreaded in my college career. It turned out to be the most useful, not only in the area of giving speeches, but also in the areas of listening and communicating with others.

Um, yeah. You already know me.
It’s raining again-And the sight renders me silent. For, knowing you that day, Believing you would stay, Expecting the stars to convey… But now it’s just rain… Showers that quiet my restless stance, Denying dread its chance, Mold me into a stride With an altered light on days… Find me in the downpour, Define me in the floods, Resign me to a journey’s hour-‘Cause it’s only rain… Play for me one refrain To carry me from here And place me on a sphere Where sand’s found me a new start, And ocean and I— But a glance apart… -may 9, 2005

Tonight, I feel the seasons changing. The weather crosses that quarterly road As the thunder rolls in, Reminding it not to look back.
Walking like you do, above the tops of the trees, You remind me of that July rain— The one where we covered our hands In strength’s brook. I’ll never see any of it differently… Giving me rest beyond what I could have imagined, You relieve me of editing heaviness— The kind that tries to make me forget My end of week finding you with ecstasy. I’ll never let a July pass indifferently again… Farther-lying train tracks…lush emerald dazzling in the downpour; Melodies discovered through opened windows…turned-head misty rain smiles— The kind that, with a mere thought, will forever stop me Wherever these hours have me. Mellow dispositions and days protected from carbon copies; Downhill from that peak, only loons would submerge To keep their eyes on this particular possibility… -jan 20, 2004 11:15pm (songs that were playing while I wrote this... Everything-Lifehouse; Carbon-Tori Amos; Landmine-Train)

Kris Hartley (cont’d) Cover me with clouds— I don’t care if it rains! I am walking around in this trance, This unending ache for affection. So, cover me with the clouds… Find me in the sand, Far beneath the face of an ocean That strives to restore me, Struggles to make me see the meaning. So, find me in the sand… Let me know when you see it, It may be right in front of me, Like the moon in mid-month, Verification in a night that’s consumed me. So, let me know when you see it… I always used to write like this, Like imagery has gone with my purpose And washed into the same sea That just smiled at me. So, just to let you know, I always used to write like this… -jan 21, 2004 9:12pm (songs accompanying my stream of consciousness: Celine Dion’s “Have You Ever Been in Love?”, “The Greatest Reward,” “Aun Existe Amor” Tori Amos’s “Floating City,” “Carbon,” “1000 Oceans”)

If it storms in the morning, I will be there— I need to wash away this distance you’ve burned into my eyes. Through the downpour, I drove tonight with the window open, In hopes that this effectively unfilled space beside me Would fly back onto the line… I had so many things to say to you, But I found no fascination in your tone… Like the rain that slid down my arm, From which I didn’t shy away, You’ve flooded me with these notions That I actually could have the moon, If I would just stop filling the sky with clouds… I figured out a way to breathe life into my dreams, But the sentiment was hidden on the other end… With that voice in your eyes, Into my layers, you’ve burned the road’s rhythm Nudging me with each dividing line. I hesitated before stopping, For fear of losing the count I had On each mile… You knew I was crazy about the idea And saw the desire light up in my senses… Still you had me dance with such an unorthodox risk, Which you knew would fall to the ground The minute I thought of the outcome… So tonight I won’t react When I see the signs for my exit… -march 28, 2004 4:01am (Songs: Melissa Etheridge’s “All the Way to Heaven,” “Angels Would Fall,” “Breakdown,” “Cherry Avenue,” “Enough of Me”)

Rain Questionnaire Responses (a HUGE thank you to all who participated!) How do you feel about rain? (free-text answer)
I love the rain. I love listening to it and just going outside, spreading my arms out and letting it cleanse me. It's so healing and good for the body, mind AND soul. The only thing I hate about it is if I have my glasses on because they never get clean afterwards and I hate water spots. -Heath Love the rain, Love Thunderstorms, It's peaceful and relaxing. Makes me all lovey and cuddly! -Cheryl
Love it as long as it is not severe with flooding. I think since I grew up in southern California and we all know "it never rains in southern California. . " I have always loved the rain an damp weather, it was a rare event. -kc_train Love it! Some people get the SADs when it's all rainy & gloomy but I seem to get an opposite reaction of jovial energy when the clouds move in & rain starts to fall...love love love! -Deirdree Prudence

If you enjoy rainy days, how do you maximize the experience? It depends. Usually I open the windows and just listen to it with my eyes closed. Sometimes I leave my glasses in the house and just go outside and let it drench me. It's very soothing. -Heath Go outside to smoke in it! Purposely forget the umbrella (who in LA has one anyway?!) or just enjoy the gloom from inside while working on some art... -Deirdree Prudence
Any other comments about the rain? Best of luck with this issue. I love the rain more than any other weather phenomenon and really enjoy your rain pictures. Wind would be another good issue topic. -kc_train I just read that El NiĂąo may be back this autumn/winter...bring it on! LA will be flooding & I'll be smiling the whole way through. -Deirdree Prudence

I could spend hours watching the rain from a window. Or if I have someone to drive me, I enjoy going for a nice long drive in the rain. -kc_train
Reading is good. Cuddling is better, on the couch with blankies, Movie days. Sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee listening to the rain, or opening a window to hear it. Sleeping with the window open, cool air, smell of the rain and the sound, best sleep ever. -Cheryl
"The smell. No matter where I have travelled It always smells a little different but the same, It makes me want to take big deep breaths like it's the last time I am ever going to smell it. Seeing the first drops hit the pavement. Checking the weather and seeing that it's going to be cool and raining on at least one of my days off. It always feels like new beginnings, a fresh start. Like it washes away all the stress and everything that weighs you down." -Cheryl
