The Children of Gavrilek [Kindle Edition]
Book Description Publication Date: August 27, 2013 Sailing aboard a storm-thrashed vessel from America to Cuba, a young woman (Audrianna) and her mysterious son (Devon) are shipwrecked and left for dead. They survive thanks to the mystical efforts of a small community located on the coast of 1920s Georgia. While in the care of this unique group and its beautiful and loving leader, Kendis, Audrianna comes to discover the secrets of her son’s cognitive powers, his (and Kendis’s) otherworldly origins, and an enthralling, Earthchanging “game” that threatens the existences of both the alien descendants of Gavrilek and the unsuspecting inhabitants of Earth. The key to the universe’s survival lies in the unraveling of Audrianna’s conflicted past and desires, as well as in the seemingly motley collection of castoffs that Kendis has nurtured and trained. Invigorated by mesmerizing prose and fervid imagination, The Children of Gavrilek weaves together world history, science fiction, and romance to unleash a powerful story of wrenching emotion and unexpected relevancy for today’s age. Its author is at the height of her narrative powers and her creation will keep you captivated from the opening pages until the last sentence.

53 of 54 people found the following review helpful 5.0 out of 5 stars Deliciously un-put-down-able October 3, 2013 By Meghan TOP 1000 REVIEWER Format:Kindle Edition Julie Kirt贸n Chandler's `The Children of Gavrilek' is one of those books you don't read in haste-instead, you read it slowly to savor the subtly shifting twists and turns, Chandler's exquisitely intimate writing, all to delay consuming the delicious climax. Set in the post-World War 1920s, `The Children of Gavrilek' is about Audrianna and her son, Devon. Sired by the union between Audrianna and an extraterrestrial being that was a member of the so-called the Children of Gavrilek, Audrianna's son has certain powers that can both be his sources of strength or his proverbial Achilles' heel. Devon's extraterrestrial lineage is largely undetected, and when the two are shipwrecked in Georgia, they come upon more extraterrestrial descendants--a community of highly trained, skilful castoffs led by the charming Kendis. From here, the story quickly reaches a level of hold-on-to-your-seat excitement that will make you obsessively turning the pages to the end. Author Chandler deftly and skilfully weaves the story to a suspenseful arpeggio of a climax, as the book answers vital questions: what are the Children of Gavrilek up to, why are they here, and how does the "game" determine the planet's life or death? Along the way, you are treated to the kind of writing that is at turns deeply entertaining and
unbearably suspenseful--especially as Audrianna gradually uncovers the secrets that could determine the very survival of the entire universe. `The Children of Gavrilek' is highly recommended to anyone who loves their science fiction enriched with romantic and engaging sub-plots and a highly satisfying conclusion that leaves you wanting for more. I love how Chandler's language could lend a certain atmosphere, a "feel", a texture that makes the reading much more enjoyable. This is top-notch work from what is supposedly a new author. Five stars, this one.

October 9, 2013 By jah Format:Kindle Edition Julie has taken the surge of sci-fi fantasy/romance and has now given it credibility. The strength of her characters, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, and struggles. Her historical research that takes you back to a place clear in a minds eye, despite never having been there. Not to mention the depth of her creativity. I just kept thinking, "how do people come up with this stuff"! It was a page turner to say the least, unpredictable, intriguing, and sexy. She has me hooked and cannot wait until the rest of her books come out.
48 of 49 people found the following review helpful 5.0 out of 5 stars A great blend of different elements October 7, 2013 By Manchester Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase This isn't your average book by any means. Julie Kirt贸n Chandler does a great job of incorporating many different elements from different genres into one flawless blend that is sure to impress even the most critical readers out there. It has all the classic elements that make romance stories so great, but with the author's own unique twist an influence from sci-fi and historical figures in a way that I must say is unlike anything that I have came across before. It's well-written, the characters are all each dynamic and original in their own special way, and the actual plot seems well thought out and and constructed to perfection. To say that this book went way above and beyond my initial expectations would be an understatement - it blew them out of the water with the author's vividly rich writing style.

Absolutely love this book! I'm not normally a reader of fantasy novels, but it was recommended to me and I'm so glad it was. I had a hard time putting it down. It is one of those rare books that leaves you sad when you finish it because there is no more to read.
19 of 20 people found the following review helpful 5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating: The Children of Gavrilek September 28, 2013 By Chameleon Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Children of Gavrilek because it was a mature adult fantasy/scifi adventure. The dynamics between the characters were compelling to follow. Somehow the storyline was able to capture the complexities of relationships against tough decision-making. The Children of Gavrilek had numerous climactic elements but were balanced out by melancholy and desire. This is the kind of book you just get lost in! It made me consider what I would value if placed in a challenging situation where there is a lot on the line. I will definitely be reading this book again and encourage others to read it as well. BTW my teens are reading the book now and enjoying it as well. I can't wait to discuss it with them.
