2 FCS ANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020

LET TER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Fellowship Family, As we look back on the 2019-2020 school year, it would be easy to focus on the challenges we faced and the disappointments we endured. Our faculty and staff will tell you that closing campus and quickly transitioning to remote learning was not in any of their lesson plans or playbooks. Cancelling sports, spring performances, and cherished end-of-year celebrations was disappointing for us all. It would be understandable to let those things define our year. I choose, however, to look back with gratitude for all that we accomplished. Despite all the changes and uncertainty around us, our Fellowship family never wavered. We remained faithful, prayerful, united, and steadfast in our efforts to accomplish our mission. Fellowship exists to inspire academic curiosity, impeccable character, and Christian leadership grounded in biblical truth. Even in the midst of a pandemic, you, our beloved parents and our remarkable faculty and staff, remained committed to helping our students become all that God has created them to be. Because of this, I am grateful for this community, for the growth, lessons learned, and successes in spite of the challenges. I am pleased to share the 2019-2020 Annual Report with you. Included in these pages you will find: • • • • •

I am thankful for the opportunity to serve and for your support and partnership as we continue to shape hearts and minds for Christ. I hope that you enjoy reviewing our 2019-2020 Annual Report. It is a beautiful reminder of God’s faithfulness and protection. In a year of trials, we were still able to celebrate the tremendous achievements of our students, the generosity of our community, and the strong financial position of our school. With gratitude, Dr. Kathryn M. Teston 3

YEAR IN REVIEW 2019

SEPTEMBER

NOVEMBER

Perhaps the best way to learn is to teach someone else. Putting their servant leadership skills to use, our high school students teach our elementary students about the exciting world of physics.

Elementary teacher Suzi Harrison was awarded the Patriot Award for her pre - through post-deployment support of the Bagwell family.

2020

AUGUST

Teaching our students to be the hands and feet of Christ, our elementary school partnered with Must Ministries to collect canned goods for our neighbors in need.

Homecoming 2019 was a colorful event! With a parade, tailgate, and an art walk, the community gathered to welcome our alumni and cheer on our Paladins!

On August 13, 2019, we welcomed 872 students back to campus! We are thankful for the opportunity to mold 872 hearts for God.

OCTOBER

We love exploring the beauty of God’s creation each fall as we take our middle and high school students on retreats to Camp Highland and SharpTop Cove. With a focus on building community and reinforcing their faith foundation, these unique experiences create memories for a lifetime.

6 FCS ANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020

Fellowship held its first-ever 10day Annual Fund Rally, and our community response was truly remarkable. With 70% parent participation, we raised more than $415,000 in just ten days.

Congratulations to our high school drama team for winning the GHSA Regional One Act Championship with their comedic presentation of The Beaux Stratagem.

DECEMBER One event at Fellowship that signals the start of the Christmas season is the annual Operation Christmas Child shoebox drive. We are thankful for the opportunity it provides for our students to love others, and also for the ability partner with Samaritan’s Purse to spread the gospel of Christ around the world. In 2019, we collected 129 shoe boxes!

JANUARY

FEBRUARY

In January 2019, our middle school launched their new community service initiative: H.O.P.E. – Helping Other People Everyday. In the inaugural year, in addition to hearing about the work of North Fulton Community Charities and Kidz2Leaders, students focused on providing support to the homeless population of Atlanta by transforming plastic grocery bags into waterproof sleeping mats.

“The true course of love never did run smooth.” Our middle school drama students delivered an entertaining rendition of Shakespeare’s classic comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Though we were physically apart, we were connected by the modern miracle of technology. When other schools stopped teaching new curriculum and academically advancing their students, Fellowship teachers got creative – challenging and encouraging their students in innovative ways.

APRIL

Campus was abuzz with singing and celebration as the elementary school welcomed over 400 grandparents to campus for Grandparents Day 2020.

Each year, Winterim provides the opportunity for our high school students to explore their gifts outside of the traditional classroom setting. These two weeks of exploration are academic in nature and investigative in practice. During Winterim 2020, students traveled to New York, Oregon, Florida, and even Europe as they engaged in internships and special projects.

In their inaugural year, our Varsity E-Sports team qualified for the GHSA state competition, advancing to the Sweet 16 with one team member finishing as the leading goal scorer in the state.

We are thankful for a community that loves in action. Whether sewing masks, making face shields, or delivering food to our faculty and staff, there were several reasons to rejoice during our time of remote learning.

MAY MARCH When a pandemic caused us to pivot to remote learning, our faculty and staff pulled together to clear lockers and distribute computers to all three divisions. Because of the early and generous giving to the Annual Fund in the fall of 2019, Fellowship advanced the purchase of new computers. This enabled us to provide the necessary 1-to-1 technology.

Who spends 14 hours driving across 5 counties to say hello to each of their students? Fellowship teachers do. Did they learn how to use new technology, adjust lesson plans, and find new ways to keep the curriculum fun and engaging? Yes, they did. But perhaps the most important thing they did was show their students how much they care.

We are so grateful for the way our community pulled together to celebrate our seniors! With a fantastic physically-distanced parade and graduation, where we were able to recognize and applaud theaccomplishments of our graduating class. 7

F O U N DAT I O N D O N O R L I S T Due to the remarkably high percentage of parents consistently investing in the future of Fellowship, in the spring of 2019, the school was presented with an anonymous grant match challenge. If we, as a school community, could raise $500,000 to be applied toward debt reduction, a foundation was willing to match these funds. In the fall of 2019, a silent campaign was initiated and, with the support of several committed Fellowship families, we quickly rose to the challenge. We are so thankful to report that in early January 2020, an additional one million dollars was applied toward debt reduction, further strengthening Fellowship’s financial position. While it is an incredible honor to have an outside organization invest in our school, we are truly humbled by and grateful for the members of our very own Fellowship family who chose to invest generously in order for us to meet this challenge. We would like to thank the following families for their generosity and investment in the future of Fellowship.

AC T S 2 : 4 4 In response to the needs of our families financially impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, Fellowship established the Acts 2:44 Fund. This special fund enabled our community of believers to unite and give generously from what God had given them, providing tuition support for existing Fellowship families. Thank you to our Acts 2:44 Fund supporters.

The Annual Fund is Every Family, Every Year! While tuition covers Fellowship’s operating budget, each year the Annual Fund provides for special projects and additional campus initiatives that enhance the experience of FCS students. With every family making a gift, we are able to provide our entire community with thoughtful experiences, program enrichment, and an individual sense of belonging. The 2019/2020 school year was the first time Fellowship ever held a 10-day Annual Fund Rally. In 10 days, our community raised over $415,000 toward our $500,000 goal. In total, over $750,000 was raised during the 2019/2020 school year, with nearly 80% of families participating. We would like to thank the tremendously generous members of our community who gave to the Annual Fund. AN END OWED FUTURE As we look around at our beautiful campus and the facilities God has blessed us with, it is important that we acknowledge the tremendous work of the visionaries who laid the foundation. In 1986, with only a dream as to what Fellowship would become and all the lives that would be impacted for God’s glory, our founders heeded God’s call to begin a covenant Christian school, responding in faith and obedience. We are the beneficiaries of the fruits of their labor, because of their vision, their commitment to the mission, and the investment they, and all successive families, have made over the last 35 years. Humbled and with an enormous sense of gratitude, we feel compelled to continue that legacy of giving in order to ensure the future of Fellowship for generations to come. Therefore, we are launching the Fellowship Endowment. How is this different from the Annual Fund? The Fellowship Endowment will be an added component of our financial strategy in addition to the Annual Fund. Though tuition covers operational expenses, we rely on the Annual Fund each year to provide resources to support financial aid, facilities maintenance and improvements, faculty training, and the exceptional educational experience that Fellowship is known for. The Annual Fund is still a key component of Fellowship’s financial strategy and provides accessible funding for current, short-term needs, and the Fellowship Endowment will ensure lasting security. How does an Endowment work? Endowments are created by individual gifts that are permanently invested. The gains earned on invested funds may be paid out, but the original gift remains intact in perpetuity. Endowments are typically comprised of multiple funds for designated purposes. For example, if a donor feels passionately that a Fellowship education should be financially accessible for all mission-appropriate families, they may request that their gift be designated for expanded financial aid. The initial gift will be invested, but as the gift grows, the gains will be used to provide financial aid and scholarships as designated. For the Fellowship Endowment, initial designated fund categories include but are not limited to the following: General, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Faculty Support, Academic Programs (including missions), Student Activities, Operations and Facilities, and Information Technology. How can I support the Fellowship Endowment and leave a lasting legacy? Please contact Joel Schuster, Director of Advancement, at 484-467-9598 or joel.schuster@fcspaladins.org to learn how you can impact the future of Fellowship. We are thankful to the committed and generous community who helped Fellowship grow from its humble beginnings, and we are grateful for the opportunity to be that blessing to the next generation. During the initial silent phase of our planning, we have been inspired by the overwhelming support thus far. With your support, we look forward to ensuring a prosperous and lasting future for Fellowship Christian School. If you have any questions or would like more information on fund management and asset allocation for the Fellowship 15
