2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT 3
HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear Fellowship Families, Together, as we contemplate on how far we’ve come and prayerfully chart our course toward the future we have envisioned, it is important to take time to reflect on who we are as a covenant Christian school. While this annual report and the State of the School address will provide you with a look at Fellowship “by the numbers,” I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to remind us of what truly makes Fellowship special. While our beliefs and relationships cannot be quantified, they are the heartbeat of our community. First, I want to affirm our unwavering commitment to being a covenant Christian school. This is the core of who we are and an essential component of the partnership we are blessed to share with you. Our shared beliefs about Jesus and scripture are what unify us in our mission and focus to form each of our students into who God has created them to be. As we continue to grow strategically, you can remain confident in our steadfast commitment to the beliefs that forge the essential bonds of our identity. Additionally, I want to affirm your commitment to “raising up your child” in such a way that you desire to lay a foundation of faith that will form their heart and guide them throughout their lives. This is a noble, God-appointed undertaking that we, the faculty, staff, and administration, are honored to share with you. I continue to be amazed at the love God places in the heart of our teachers for each and every one of your children. I hope you find strength and support in knowing that each of our teachers desires to link arms in partnership with you on this mission to inspire academic curiosity, develop impeccable character, and encourage Christian leadership grounded in biblical truth. With your commitment to your child’s faith, the support of the Fellowship community, and the support of your church home, this provides a firm foundation in the consistent affirmation of the core values we hold dear. As we look toward the future, I want us to embrace a relationship that values empathy, grace, and love. I want us to be empowered by great questions that build strong communication. I want our community to be difficult to offend, yet quick to understand, because we know our fellowship is only as strong as the relationships that make up this special partnership. I hope you will join me and commit, as a member of the Fellowship family, to regularly pray for our students, our teachers, our families, our leaders, and for God’s continued movement within our school. I cannot express how grateful I am for you, and for your children. It is an honor to serve you. I praise God for His faithfulness and look forward with eager expectation to what He will do in the years to come. Sincerely, Dr. Kathryn M. Teston

INVESTMENTS WITH REMARKABLE RETURNS Thank you is not enough for the steadfast support and dedication you have shown. You have been fearlessly faithful and generations of Paladins will benefit from your generosity. PALADIN STADIUM COMPLEX
Coming off the heels of an incredibly exciting and successful football season, we are pleased to share that phase one of the Press Box Challenge has been completed. On December 6, 2019, Paladin Nation was, for the first time ever, able to use the newly constructed, permanent restroom amenities inside Bob Lord Field. There was a need and the generous Fellowship community answered the call. Thank you to all who have given so generously to the Paladin Stadium Complex. FINE ARTS Whether you attended an inspiring art exhibit, videoed your way through the preciousness of an elementary school concert, joined the middle school for an entertaining production of “Annie,” or sang your way through the high school’s spirited presentation of “Mary Poppins,” we are certain you were thoroughly captivated and inspired by the talent and creativity of the Fellowship Fine Arts program. Without you though, these events would not be possible. Thanks to your unwavering support, several upgrades have been made to maximize not only the guest experience, but the students’ experience as well. Darkroom renovations, a new large format printer, and improved stage storage enable our artists to produce the highest quality masterpieces. Additionally, the purchase of new seating and sound equipment enhanced the quality of the many spectacular exhibits, concerts, and productions for our guests.
CLASSROOM SPACE We’ve outgrown our classroom space! We have been fortunate to face the interesting challenge of finding space for our growing middle school student body. With enrollment up, we needed additional classroom space. After many discussions and prayerful consideration, the decision was made to expand via temporary modular classrooms. We sincerely thank all of you who made this much-needed expansion possible. We are so pleased with the new space, which houses 4 additional, self-contained classrooms that offer the same comforts, amenities, and restroom accommodations as the main building. We are excited to welcome our middle school students into their new classrooms.
2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT 7
Praise God from whom all blessings flow! GRANT MATCH CHALLENGE In the spring of 2019, due to the consistency and the remarkably high percentage of families who invest in the success of Fellowship, we were blessed to receive an anonymous challenge grant of $500,000 designated for debt reduction. This past fall we initiated a silent campaign to match these funds and were astounded at the response. Our community of supporters quickly rose to the challenge, matching the grant by November. We are thrilled to apply an additional one million dollars toward debt reduction as we begin 2020.
W H AT ’ S T O C O M E After experiencing an incredible wave of generosity this past fall, we are thrilled to share that we have been able to launch several initiatives in the areas of safety, technology, academics, and campus improvements. SAFETY FIRST! At Fellowship, your children’s second home is our first priority. To ensure safety and maintain appropriate privacy for our faculty, staff, and students, several interior security initiatives have been completed throughout campus. With the completion of these minor projects, we eagerly anticipate moving forward on the larger initiative of completing the fencing around our entire campus. We will complete the exterior fencing project once all funds have been secured.
WE CAN HEAR YOU NOW! Last year, through the Fine Arts fundraising initiatives, you helped purchase new sound equipment. This year, your continued giving has enabled us to hire an experienced audio tech whose skills will enable us to maximize the features of our equipment. We hope our Fellowship community will enjoy their enhanced chapel, concert, and performance experiences.
NEVER NOT LEARNING! There are several exciting academic enhancements in the works. When those enhancements make learning fun, there are endless possibilities! In the elementary school, a resource library of guided reading books was purchased for teachers to use during small group instruction. Additionally, early childhood teachers have been able to update their learning centers and replace the imaginative play items and manipulatives in each of their classrooms. The high school has launched this year’s STEM project and excitedly anticipates the completion of Fellowship’s first solar-powered car. These resources and initiatives allow our incredible teachers to meet students where they are and propel them to places they never knew they could go.

PALADIN PARK
8
Take a trip to Paladin Park and you’ll find one of the most beautiful baseball facilities in the area. With its indoor hitting cages, bricked dugouts, roofed stadium seating, picnic pavilion, and covered playground, you will be hard-pressed to find a more enjoyable setting to watch America’s favorite pastime. This is a park where students and families alike are happy to linger a while longer. However, Paladin Park did not always exist in its current state. In 2011, a few incredibly devoted and benevolent families from the Fellowship community decided to combine their love of sports with their love for FCS. Their unprecedented generosity, inspiring vision, and heartfelt passion to unite families and develop young men and women of character through sports were the driving forces in the development of Paladin Park. This extensive and gorgeous park includes the baseball and softball fields, the tennis courts, a covered playground, and Paladin Pavilion. Though these families may no longer have students of their own taking the field at FCS, they have continued to partner with Fellowship to maintain and improve our outstanding sports facilities. Most recently, the construction of the elementary school playground behind the outfield fence enhanced existing drainage issues on Winchester Field. The Paladins were disappointed to temporarily lose the home-field advantage and had to move games off-site. As with any true competitors, the team rose to the challenge and enjoyed a successful season.
During the offseason, with the aid of our most dedicated supporters, we were able to move toward a remedy for the drainage issues, as well as make a few additional safety improvements. Fellowship is blessed to have families who are not only invested in the success of our school, but in the futures of our students. You see, while our incredible Paladin Park supporters may have originally invested in dirt, brick, and mortar, perhaps they would agree that the most remarkable return on their investment is the extraordinary young men and women who carry their shared experiences, love of the game, and the heart of Fellowship with them wherever they go. Coaches and players agree that while the fields and courts at Paladin Park are beautiful, they are more than mere sports facilities. They are training grounds; building confidence, sportsmanship, competitive drive, and character, and developing young men and women who dare to dream bigger. So much bigger in fact, that in the last decade, the baseball program alone has seen fourteen former Paladins graduate and continue their playing careers at the collegiate level. While these athletes may

have left their FCS uniforms behind, they have taken a piece of their experience with them. As Former Paladin Isaac Bouton, FCS Class of 2019, prepares to suit up for his first season as a Columbus State University Cougar, Fellowship won’t be far from his mind. “Playing for Fellowship helped me develop a mental toughness and resilience to do my job on and off the field.” Cameron Gill, FCS Class of 2019 and current Wofford CollegeTerrier, echoes that sentiment. “It [baseball] is about showing up every day, putting in the work, and making your mind up that no one will outwork me today. No one will out hustle me today. Nobody will outsmart me today.” Baseball also taught Gill that the sport, and life, is more about “we” than “me.” “Crafting servant-leadership skills through baseball was an incredible opportunity. I had to learn to play for the eight other guys on the field and not focus on myself.” This lesson in servant-leadership made an impression on former Paladin and Covenant College Scot Grant Kierpa, FCS Class of 2015, as well. He will return to Fellowship this spring to invest time as an assistant coach. Perhaps he will pay forward the same sense of fun, love of the game, and big-picture perspective that he experienced as a player. “As a senior, I remember being blown away by Coach Pager’s encouragement and enthusiasm,” shared Kierpa. “While he was highly competitive inside the lines, he was also fun and encouraging and engaged with us when the game was over. No matter the outcome, he was the same. That taught me how to handle losses.” Current Coach Shawn Oliver continues to encourage that same drive and love of the game, and hopes to help his players build confidence on and off the field. “One of my greatest successes as a coach at Fellowship is getting my players to understand that they can compete with any team in the state. Baseball is unique in that whether you are a single A team or an AAAAAAA team, it’s our best nine versus their best nine. We have athletes on campus who are capable of beating anyone, and I want the guys to understand that.” According to Bouton, Coach Oliver changed up his swing mechanics and got him out of a slump at the plate his senior season, improving him as a player. However, it was his encouragement overall that truly impacted him as a person. “Coach O never let me settle. They [the coaches] helped me not to grow complacent about where I was. I wanted to keep improving and they always kept that a priority.”
“At Fellowship, you always had coaches who cared about your athletic performance, but who also cared deeply for who you were as a person,” reiterated Caleb Winchester, FCS Class of 2008. “Regardless of a player’s ability to play the game, Fellowship develops the whole person. Training players in their ability to play the game is just a bonus.” Winchester, who lettered at both Wheaton College and Oxford University, credits coaches, family, and friends for the support and encouragement that not only pushed him to tryout for Wheaton’s team, but also gave him the courage to pursue his MBA in England. “If I had never attempted to try out for the team, I would have always wondered if I could have played at the next level,” shares Winchester. “Living a life wondering and questioning ‘what if I showed up and tried?’ is a terrible way to live. It’s better to know where you stand. You might surprise yourself.” Coach Oliver hopes past, present, and future players feel the same sense of support that Winchester felt when they leave Fellowship to take on their next great adventure. “When guys walk away from this program, whether they play college ball or not, I want them to know that we love them. Their teammates love them. I want them to feel like they’re better men because of what they experienced in the program.” Even though they may no longer call him “coach,” Oliver wants his players to understand they can call on him any time. “I love them, and if they need me, they can reach out. I will be there.” Though walk-off home runs and wins are nice, the work ethic, lifelong friendships, self-confidence, and lessons learned on the field are what will propel these athletes toward greatness once their playing days are done. We hope you will join us to cheer on the next generation of Paladins. We look forward with great anticipation to Opening Day 2020 at Paladin Park!
