The Self Reliance Youth Development Organization was founded in 1993 and was introduced and sponsored by Sampars Cash and Carry for the sole purpose of creating educational opportunities for the young citizens of Jamaica residing in the communities neighbouring the Sampars operation. The organization is comprised of parents, many of whom are unemployed. Sampars provides support by assisting with school charges/fees for approximately 30 to 40 students per year to attend the various High Schools. In order to maintain a continuous link with the students, Sampars has maintained Saturday classes held on the business premises. The parents of the students are held together by meeting on the second and fourth Sundays of each month without a break. The parents organize and hold an annual barbecue in July of each year on the grounds of Sampars to raise funds to cover the balance of school charges/fees, examination fees and to assist with teachers’ stipend. The objectives of the organization are as follows: · Upgrading parental responsibilities and skills · Continuous group discussions covering the progress of the students of the organization · Provide home and community support at all levels for the students · Cementing relations between members enabling discussions of common parental problems with the focus on possible solutions. · Parents are encouraged to be model participants in regular school activities, PTA etc. and in community activities in their respective communities

Testimonial

I am extremely proud to be a part of the Self Reliance Youth Development Youth Organization. As a past beneficiary and a member of teaching staff, I have seen the organization positively impact the life of so many of our “marginalized” youths. Marginalized, because, if it had not been for this opportunity success would have only been a dream. Sampars Cash N’ Carry Succs have assumed the role, from the founders Sam Richards and Hugh Parsons, and have championed the cause with such create passion and invaluable support. From its fledgling beginning it has grown in size and importance and serves a critical component to the development of this nation. Thank you Sampars Cash N’ Carry Succs and staff for making success my reality for it is as our motto states “With a helping hand and the grace of God we will strive to gain success with excellence as our standard.

Thank you.
