THE SALVATION ARMY’S MISSION The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

THE SALVATION ARMY KROC CENTER’S PURPOSE In keeping with the mission and holistic approach of The Salvation Army, The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center provides opportunities that facilitate positive, life-changing experiences through: art, athletics, personal development, spiritual discovery and community service. The Salvation Army Kroc Center’s facilities, programs and services bridge the gap between potential and opportunity for children and adults, strengthen individuals and families, and enrich the lives of seniors.

JOAN KROC’S VISION Joan Kroc, wife of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, said that she took a tour of San Diego and it was then that she recognized a community that was in desperate need of a safe gathering place, a place with facilities and trained professionals to nurture children’s social skills, arts appreciation and athletic potential. Mrs. Kroc entrusted The Salvation Army with $87 million to build the first Kroc Center in the Rolando neighborhood of San Diego. Her vision of The Kroc Center as being a beacon of light and hope in the community. Sadly, she passed away a little more than a year after it opened. She was so pleased with what was accomplished here that she left $1.8 billion to The Salvation Army to build centers like this across the country. Today, there are 27 in different stages of development.

INCLUSION The Kroc Center is committed to the inclusion of all children in our Day Camp Program. Parents of children with special needs should contact the Day Camp Director at least two weeks prior to the desired session’s start date to determine whether the Kroc Center can provide appropriate accommodations and which camp(s) are best suited for him or her. Inclusion intake forms are available upon request or as a download on www.kroccenter.org/day-camp/.

COMMITMENT TO CHILD SAFETY The Salvation Army Kroc Center is committed to child safety, and we are thrilled to be awarded Praesidium Accreditation! Praesidium, Inc. is the leader in abuse risk management. To attain this accreditation, we underwent a rigorous risk assessment to review and scrutinize eight primary operational areas within our business including: policies, screening and selection, training, monitoring and supervision, consumer participation, feedback systems, responding and administrative systems. Praesidium Accreditation is a prestigious honor that publicly demonstrates to consumers— and insurance underwriters—that we have worked to achieve the highest industry standards in abuse prevention.

LUNCH PROGRAM Lunch and a morning/afternoon snack are provided to each camper free of cost! If a camper is a picky eater, has allergies or has dietary restrictions, we encourage parents to pack a lunch from home. Choosing not to use this benefit will not reduce the price of camp. WEEKLY CAMP THEME

Weekly themes are reflected during art sessions, all-camp celebrations, and throughout daily activities. We encourage children to get into the spirit of camp on Fridays by wearing a costume. Costumes should be age-appropriate, non-restrictive and allow for full participation in typical camp activities.

THURSDAYS

What better way to beat the heat, than to enjoy a few relaxing hours in a full-size movie theatre? Most Thursday afternoons, campers will be able to watch a movie in our Joan B. Kroc Theatre. Movies are selected based on appropriateness for the general camper population (G or PG), as well as the weekly theme.

FANTASTIC FRIDAYS AT CAMP

Fridays offer campers new opportunities and exciting activities that may include participating in performances or supporting their fellow campers from Specialty Camps. On Friday afternoons, campers come together on the Recreation Field for a themerelated “All-Camp” activity. Activities and contests are planned collaboratively by the Day Camp Staff and are designed to be all-inclusive. Don’t be surprised to see our Day Camp mascot, RJ Kroc, handing out awards to our “Campers of the Week!”

The session will focus on leadership skills relevant to supervising children in a camp setting and tips for leading activities. Teens will receive a full orientation at each Kroc Center venue, CPR & First Aid certification, and child abuse awareness training. After completing the training session, teens will have the opportunity to enroll in up to nine weeks of Junior Leaders programming. These sessions will put their new skills to work through volunteering at Day Camp. Teens will continue honing their leadership skills while working in camp groups, helping counselors lead activities and connecting with the children. Projects may also include planning and organizing special camper activities and experiencing the behindthe-scenes aspects of camp.

PARENTS ‘‘WHAT ARE SAYING

“We love the Kroc and hope to have our son continue to attend during the summer and perhaps other school vacations. The staff has been wonderful about working with his special needs and he has grown and matured tremendously under the care & guidance of your staff.”

“Our son has really been enjoying Day Camp. So much so, in fact, that he keeps telling everyone that he is not going back to his regular school! He says he’s just going to keep going to Day Camp, and he even asked me to help him write a letter to his school to inform them of his plans. I keep telling him that’s not the case, but he doesn’t seem to believe me.”

“The girls have attended many sessions & some specialty camps; we love the facility, the counselors have been great & we have always felt comfortable about leaving the girls there. We appreciate that Kroc accommodates the year-round school schedule you are one of the few programs that does.” “You have a great program! Thanks for making sure the kids do a wide variety of things and have fun trying new things and enjoying old favorites! “I recommend this camp to others. I think the staff is well-trained and responsible. I think the activities are amazing and the price is right!”

“We just moved out of the area, but would go to Kroc camp any chance we could get. It was a phenomenal experience all around. I knew my kids were having a great time, learning new things, and have experiences that were grounded in good moral concepts. Thank you to everyone - we will miss you!” “He went to many different camps this summer, yours was his favorite. He loved all the activities.” “I love the fun and safe environment that is offered for the children. I will definitely be bringing them to camp again and will be recommending the Kroc Center to friends and family.”

“My older child has been attending camp there for many summers. My younger one just started in the last couple of summers. They both love it and I appreciate how helpful everyone is and how caring the camp counselors are. Thank you!” “I want to thank everyone that puts this wonderful day camp experience together for my child and every child that goes. The counselors are obviously picked very carefully and are patient, kind, and loving to these kids.”

“We just love it. All of us. As parents we feel our child is in a safe and nurturing place, and learning things she would otherwise not have the opportunity to. My daughter LOVES the camps at the Kroc.”
