FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS WHO IS WATCHING MY CHILD? The majority of our staff members are recruited from local colleges and universities. Most importantly, our staff is made up of people who love kids. They want to spend their time playing, teaching, and working with children. All Kroc Center Day Camp staff members have cleared reference checks and a national background check. In addition, all staff members are certified in basic First Aid & CPR and receive extensive training in both how to care for youth and how to prevent childhood abuse. You can be sure that we are hiring the best of the best to work with your children.
HOW LARGE ARE THE CAMP GROUPS? WHAT IS THE STAFF TO CAMPER RATIO? Camp groups generally range from 15-32 campers per group. Staff to camper ratios range from 1:6 to 1:10 (depending upon the ages within the camp group). A minimum of two staff are always present, regardless of the number of campers.
WHAT SHOULD MY CHILD BRING TO CAMP? Campers are required to wear socks and closedtoe shoes daily. Campers should wear seasonappropriate clothes in which they are ready to play hard and get dirty! For girls, we do not recommend skirts or dresses. If your child’s camp is scheduled to swim, a swimsuit, towel, and sunscreen will also be needed. Sandals are allowed on the pool deck only. Please label all items and place them in a backpack for your campers to carry.
PEE WEE PARENTS: Please send your child in clothing and footwear he or she can put on without assistance. Pee Wee camp is scheduled for a daily “quiet time” during which the campers may either take a brief nap or do a quiet activity. Parents are encouraged to send children with a blanket, special book, or something else that helps the child relax. No valuables, please.
WHAT SHOULD NOT BE BROUGHT TO CAMP? Please make sure that your camper leaves all electronic items (including cell phones), jewelry, toys, card games, and pets at home.
8
CAN I GET AN AGE EXCEPTION FOR MY CHILD? Campers must be the age indicated in the Day Camp description by September 1, 2014 in order to enroll in that camp. Children must be at least 4 years old on the first day of that camp session to enroll in a Pee Wee Camp.
WHAT IS ACA ACCREDITATION? ACA is an acronym for the American Camp Association. The ACA has developed a rigorous and in-depth set of standards affecting camp operations, staffing, programming, and safety procedures. Camps that meet these criteria are awarded an ACA Accreditation. We are proud to be an ACA Accredited Day Camp, providing a safe and enriching experience for our campers.
WHAT IF MY CHILD HAS SPECIAL NEEDS? The Kroc Center is committed to the inclusion of all children in our Day Camp Program, however, the Kroc Center Day Camp Inclusion Program cannot provide specialized 1-on-1 supervision/ care for any individual camper. As part of the Inclusion Application process, each child (and at least one parent) will be required to attend an interview with the Inclusion Coordinator to discuss/determine if we can provide reasonable accommodations to meet your child’s needs and (most importantly) keep them safe while at camp. Please call the Inclusion Coordinator at (619) 269-1470 at least two weeks prior to your desired session’s start date to schedule your Inclusion Application interview.
HOW DOES LUNCH/SNACK WORK? Lunch and a morning/afternoon snack are provided to each camper free of cost! If a camper is a picky eater, has allergies or has dietary restrictions, we encourage parents to pack a lunch from home. Our daily schedules are very flexible and vary depending upon the activities planned for your child’s camp. The typical time frame for lunch is thirty minutes between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM. Snack and Lunch menus will be emailed to parents the Friday before the scheduled camp and will also be available for pick-up each Monday at the sign-in table.
ALL THINGS CAMP
WHAT IF MY CHILD NEEDS TO TAKE MEDICATION DURING CAMP HOURS? We are happy to assist your child with their medical needs. Medication(s) must be in their original prescription container with the child’s name printed on the label, and placed in a plastic bag. Please check-in the medication at the Day Camp Office and complete a Medical Information Sheet. Kroc Center staff will not dispense non-prescription medications without written parental consent.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD GETS SICK OR INJURED? If a camper is too ill or hurt to continue their camp day, parents will be immediately contacted. For minor scrapes and bruises, Day Camp staff will complete a Report to Parent (RTP) form to notify parents of the event at pick-up time.
COMMITMENT TO CHILD SAFETY The Salvation Army Kroc Center is committed to child safety, and we are thrilled to be awarded Praesidium Accreditation! Praesidium, Inc. is the leader in abuse risk management. To attain this accreditation, we underwent a rigorous risk assessment to review and scrutinize eight primary operational areas within our business including: policies, screening and selection, training, monitoring and supervision, consumer participation, feedback systems, responding and administrative systems. Praesidium Accreditation is a prestigious honor that publicly demonstrates to consumers—and insurance underwriters— that we have worked to achieve the highest industry standards in abuse prevention.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE & SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Individuals, families, and seniors who cannot afford Kroc Center membership or fees for youth camps and/or group classes can apply for a discount. Applicants for services will meet with a Family Resource Center Associate for an assessment to build upon strengths and assets and assist with meeting identified areas of need. Eligibility for this program is based on income level and address verification within the Kroc Center’s service area. Applications are available at any Guest Service Desk, in the Family Resource Center, and at www.kroccenter.org. Applications should be submitted at least four weeks prior to the start of the program requested. Additional information can be obtained by calling 619.269.1430 or e-mailing sdkroc.frc@usw.salvationarmy.org

I want to let you know how happy my son is at camp. We are especially pleased with the special academic classes from 4-6. My son missed reading, but has LOVED “Where in the World is RJ Kroc” and is out of his mind excited about “Science Shakedown”. I have rarely seen him so delighted and talkative about what he learns. It’s quite a dramatic contrast from the regular school year. I am amazed at the quality of the teaching staff and the curriculum they have developed. We are so lucky. I count my blessings with this set of teachers! -Summer Day Camp Parent

What better way to beat the heat, than to enjoy a few relaxing hours in a full-sized movie theatre? Most Thursday afternoons, campers will be able to watch a movie in our Joan B. Kroc Theatre. Movies are selected based on appropriateness for the general camper population (G or PG), as well as the weekly theme.
FANTASTIC ALL CAMP FRIDAYS
Fridays offer campers new opportunities and exciting activities that may include participating in performances or supporting their fellow campers from Specialty Camps. On Friday afternoons, campers come together on the Recreation Field for a themerelated “All-Camp” activity. Activities and contests are planned collaboratively by the Day Camp Staff and are designed to be all-inclusive. Don’t be surprised to see our Day Camp mascot, RJ Kroc, handing out awards to our “Campers of the Week!”

‘‘
PARENTS ‘‘WHAT ARE SAYING
“My kids have been attending the summer camp provided at the Kroc Center for the past 3 years and they LOVE IT! From a parent’s perspective: registration is easy, camps are a good value, safety is an obvious high priority, lunches are of good quality and included with the camp, the counselors are clearly well screened and knowledgeable. From my kids perspective: they love all of their counselors, they love the variety of different activities that they do in one day... rock wall, skateboard park, swim, ice skating, library, computer lab, arts and crafts and all of the wonderful specialty camps. I would and I do highly recommend this camp to anyone who is looking for a full day camp for their kids.” “My children have been attending Kroc Camp, karate, and swim classes since they were very small. My kids have attended a variety of science, skateboarding, soccer, and swim camps. Throughout each camp they learn a skill and get to participate in the other Kroc activities such as Ice Skating and Rock Climbing. They come home from camp with new friends, new experiences, and very tired! Thank you Kroc Camp.” “My number one priority was safety and I was very impressed with the procedures in place and practiced to ensure my grandchildren’s safety.”

“As always, this is the best quality camp overall, both for experiences, availability and affordability!” “My kids love the experience that they have during the summer camps. I appreciate how all the counselors greet my kids. The camp is really well organized and all things appear to go according to schedule which can be no small task when you are handling that many children AND their parents. Thanks for creating a fun and safe environment for my kids!”

“My son liked this camp much better than the other camps he had attended previously. Your activities were much better.” “My children have been attending Kroc Camp for six years now and every year it is an outstanding experience. Thank you for a great program.” “The Kroc Center is 100% top notch...we send the kids every year. The #1 attraction (besides the safety and security provided to the kids) is the staff. Each year we are so impressed with the quality of the staff and counselors.... they are fantastic. Just a great group of young people.” “Thanks again to all the staff…I have seen much growth and positive development in my son as a result of his camp experiences.” “Awesome camp experience at a great cost and with an amazingly diverse set of activities for the campers. Much more engaging than other camps which comes at a higher cost. Definitely sending all our children here in the future.”
