MEET THE CAPTAINS
Dear Friends, Something has been nagging in the back of our minds for quite some time. It’s not the kind of thought that makes us think we’ve missed something, or are lacking something. It’s more the kind of thought, the perception that we’re on the precipice of something new and part of something much bigger than we ever imagined. While we don’t fully understand the quality or enormity of the something new, we understand its roots echo in the history behind us and the eternity before us. Far too often we think of ourselves – as individuals and as a community – within the immediate context of city, country and culture. And this is rightly so. We are finite, and much of our life is dictated by the immediate. But what we’ve begun to see is that our present is not isolated from the past or the future. It is part of an unfolding story beginning and ending in God’s love, and scripted to include our participation. Let’s put it this way: who we are and what we do matters. Our participation in the story is not about joining God’s club, but about sharing God’s love.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS CAPTAINS JOHN & LISA VAN CLEEF John & Lisa Van Cleef have been married for nearly 18 years and have four children ages 4 to 16. The Van Cleef’s have been Salvation Army officers for nearly 16 years and have been stationed in Carson City, NV, Medford, OR and Portland, OR before coming to the Kroc Center.
The Kroc Center’s part in the story isn’t about membership, trophies or recognition. It’s about encouraging people to discover their part in the story. It’s about equipping people to grow within the story. It’s about engaging in service to others through the story. Everything we do at the Kroc Center – arts, athletics, education, social justice and church – is about introducing people to the story, with dignity and without discrimination, and inviting them to find their part.
John is a graduate of George Fox University, with a degree in Organizational Management. He is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and is working toward CFRE certification.
The truth that we’re not alone and isolated from greater meaning is powerful and transformative. It saturates each day with potential and meaning, and keeps our eyes alert for moments that remind us of our place in eternity.
Lisa graduated from the University of Washington with dual degrees in Political Science and Communication (Journalism).
We’re glad you’re part of the story. Pass it on…
The Van Cleefs desire to bring God joy through their living and believe with all their hearts the words of 1 Thessalonians 5:24: “Faithful is He who calls you, and He will bring it to pass.
In Jesus,
The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church, has been supporting those in need in His name without discrimination since 1865. Nearly 33 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through a wide array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children. About 83 cents of every dollar raised is used to support those services in nearly 9,000 communities nationwide. For more information, go to www.salvationarmyusa.org.

The Salvation Army refers to these efforts as “Protecting the Mission.” All staff and volunteers are trained in child/elder dependent adult abuse prevention and are mandated reporters of suspicions or reports of abuse. Similarly, we ask members and guests to report suspicious behavior. Forms for anonymous reporting, called Confidential Notices of Concern, are available at any venue Guest Service Desk. Registered Sex Offenders are not permitted on campus. All Membership and Adult class applications are screened against Megan’s Law and the Department of Justice websites.
