The Major Message

– Matthew 18:20

Greetings in the name of Jesus, from your Quincy Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center! Can you believe YOUR Kroc Center is about to celebrate its 8th anniversary? This beautiful facility is much like our bodies, with age we must get yearly check-ups to make sure everything is functioning properly. Earlier this spring the facility underwent its yearly check-up and the results revealed there were a few areas needing some attention. As with working out to keep fit, healthy, and everything in working order our muscles experience some pains, but in the end, the outcome will be worth it. We continue to ask you to pardon our mess as we complete the renovations and improvements. When it is all done, The Kroc Center will be even better prepared to keep you fit spiritually, physically, and mentally. We encourage you to step up and join in, whether in a fitness class, Bible study, music lesson, an art class, a worship service, sports league… you get the picture, we have so much in which to participate! Once again this beautifully produced Program Guide is filled from beginning to end with great ways to be involved in The Kroc Community. We invite you to become a #KrocStar.

MAJORS ANDY & CHERYL MILLER Area Commander and Senior Kroc Officer

As our warm summer days ease into crisp days of fall, we remind you there are a variety of volunteer opportunities available. Do you enjoy serving? Consider joining in on the gratefulness-filled Thanksgiving community dinner on November 28. Is greeting shoppers and ringing our famous bells with your family or community group more your style? The need for more bell ringers is great. Simply go to RegisterToRing.com to find out more and to sign-up for shifts that fit your schedule. Another fulfilling volunteering opportunity is with our community Christmas Dinner on December 25. This community meal is always overflowing with joy, laughter, and great food. For more information about any of our volunteer opportunities please contact Jeremy Koren at 217-231-5633. From aquatics to Zumba and from Bible studies to basketball, The Kroc Center is here to Inspire, Instruct, and Involve. We are Inspired by God’s Holy Spirit, Instructed by God’s Word, and Involved in God’s work. God bless you!

“After putting in the hard work to become a lifeguard, I began teaching swim lessons which is where I found my strengths. Working with children has always been something I have enjoyed but now I am teaching them lifesaving skills. Teaching swim lessons has confirmed the plans of me wanting to study education. Knowing that you have such an impact on these children is something that I will never forget.”

The ACTION Program helped Mary Townley reach her fitness goals.

I

t’s not like Mary wasn’t active. Quite the contrary. Mary loved going for walks and would walk a great distance. There were days when she would walk up to 10 miles. Despite her active lifestyle; she felt as though she was missing something in her fitness routine, strength training. When Mary Townley read about Adams County Taking Initiative on Obesity Now! the 2018 ACTION (Adams County Taking Initiative on Obesity Now) it was time for the duo to complete the body composition Program, she became excited about analysis, they laughed and told one another to stay away joining the program and to begin working out. because they didn’t want each other to know their weight. Mary quickly overcame her fear of another person knowing “It just seemed like the right time and the right fit for me, her weight and body measurements. “I was kind of like, ‘ok and I just wanted to be healthier and stronger,” stated there it is, someone else, other than me, knows my weight.’ Townley. “A big part of joining the program was that it was As I grew stronger, and saw my fat decrease, and my muscle free, so it allowed me to try the facility and classes. “A big part of joining the program was that it was free, so it allowed me to try the facility and classes. That was very appealing to me.”

The two friends tried to workout together, but due to conflicting schedules, they were unable to join one another. That was when Mary committed to coming no matter what. Regardless if her friend would be joining her, Mary was committed to making the most out of this opportunity. She made an effort to come to the facility at least five times a week. With the help of the workout card and videos provided by the ACTION Program, Mary was able to workout without the fear of not knowing what to do. As the weeks passed, Mary found herself using The Kroc Center more than she was using her workout cards. “Talking to the fitness and gym attendants helped a lot. Not once did someone tell me that I couldn’t do something,” stated Townley. “It was always ‘you can do this! You’ve got it!’ So that just made me say that I’m going to keep coming back. I can do it. The entire experience was encouraging. I’ve met people that are now friends that I didn’t know before I participated in the ACTION Program.”

Setting Goals After completing the ACTION Program, Mary became a member of The Kroc Center. “Many times my son would send me a text message and ask ‘mom, what are you doing?, and I’d say ‘I’m at The Kroc or I’ve been at The Kroc.’ He would say ‘you must be really loving that place and be doing well.’ And I would say, ‘well, it’s like my best friend.’ I was coming five times a week. Close to Christmas, my son was asking me what I wanted, and I said, ‘I know what I want, but I’m not going to ask for it.’ He said, ‘well, I know what you want. I am buying it for you.’ I told him that it was an expensive gift, and I would never ask someone for that. He said, ‘well guess what? We’re going to The Kroc Center to buy your membership because that’s my gift to you.’ I feel very blessed and thankful that I can be here as much as I want throughout the week.”

much the loss of weight, but I am strong, and I am getting stronger. I don’t ever want that to be taken from me. I like the strength that I have.”

“You can do it! You don’t have to sit on the sidelines and watch everyone else. Be part of this program and set goals. You can reach those goals and continue to set new ones.”

Mary’s enthusiasm for the ACTION Program is contagious. If you are interested in joining the 2019 ACTION Program and are on the fence as to whether or not you will participate, just take a few words of encouragement from Mary. “You can do it! You don’t have to sit on the sidelines and watch everyone else. Be part of this program and set goals. You can reach those goals and continue to set new ones. Just be a part of a great facility. I have enjoyed it so much.“ ●

“Talking to the fitness and gym attendants helped a lot. Not once did someone tell me that I couldn’t do something. It was always ‘You can do this! You’ve got it!’” Mary decided to join The Kroc Center after the ACTION Program because she wanted to keep going. “I am not done,” she said. “I’ve set many goals, and there are many more that I’d still like to reach.” One of the goals that she set for herself was to jump on one of the plyometric boxes. “I pulled it out and started with the 3-inch box. After trying the 3-inch box, I said I could do better than this, and now I use the 6-inch box. I’ve also done Jacob’s ladder. I won’t tell how long I’ve been on there, but I still have a goal for the amount of time that I’d like to achieve being on it.”

As the temperatures cool down, grab a hot drink from the Kroc Café and relax at one of our tables with a friend. Everyone has busy lives, so slow down and take a moment to focus on reconnecting with a friend.

Get to know a Fitness Instructor!

Our group fitness instructors love teaching and getting to know our members. Introduce yourself and try to learn a little bit more about them.

Plan for the Future

Attend a Healthy Aging Seminar which covers a wide range of topics such as nutrition, sleeping habits, exercise, and financial health. Seminars are free and open to the public.

What is bouldering? It’s when you climb the rock wall horizontally as opposed to the traditional vertical climb. It’s fun AND a great full body workout!

Try a class that is not offered in a live group fitness setting such as Grit, Sh’Bam, RPM, and Barre.

It’s a scary good time, and we love seeing how creative our community gets with their costumes. Candy and non-food items are handed out in the Meadows.

Video-based classes provide an amazing workout.

F

ive-year Kroc member Lance Whitaker has always found time to workout and fit fitness into his daily routine. Unfortunately, his busy schedule made participating in The Kroc Center’s live group fitness classes close to impossible. That is until The Kroc began offering Les Mills Virtual/OnDemand classes. The Kroc Center is honored to be the only fitness facility in the area to offer Les Mills Virtual/OnDemand classes.

once you do it. Les Mills Virtual provides me with everything that I need for my workout.”

“I think I’ve been taking Les Mills Virtual classes for almost a year now,” stated Whitaker. “I heard about virtual from a Welcome Desk attendant and another member. Kroc Fitness and Wellness Specialist Melissa Harris brought it up to me because I was telling her about how much I love the cycling class, but I was frustrated that I couldn’t get in here right at 5:30pm to do it and I didn’t want to get up in the morning to take the early class.” Melissa asked Lance why he hadn’t tried Les Mills Virtual/OnDemand.

Les Mills Virtual allows Lance to try workouts that he otherwise would have a difficult time doing in the other areas of the facility. “I have always wanted to do a HIIT workout, but it’s difficult to do one in the fitness area because you have to worry about being in the way of someone else’s workout,” stated Lance. “When you take a HIIT-style virtual class, you don’t have to be creative. They tell you what you need and what to do, and you’re ready to roll.”

“Since trying it, I have never looked back,” stated Whitaker. “At first, I did RPM, and then I decided that I wanted to try more. So I experimented with the other classes and that’s when I discovered GRIT. I hadn’t done GRIT before and let me tell you; you want to forget it

While Lance is by himself during many of the virtual classes, he doesn’t mind. He admits that having people around can be nice because it pushes him, but even that isn’t necessary because the virtual instructors do a great job of motivating him.

“Les Mills Virtual provides me with everything that I need for my workout.

Lance has never had a problem with staying consistent with his gym attendance, but Les Mills Virtual/OnDemand has allowed him to experience a larger variety of workout variations than he has experienced in the past. There is always something new to try with Les Mills Virtual. Whether he wants to change the duration of his workout, intensity, or fitness goals, virtual allows Lance to keep his workouts fresh. Lance’s favorite Les Mills Virtual/OnDemand classes are GRIT Strength and RPM, two classes that until Les Mills Virtual, were not available at The Kroc Center or anywhere in the area. Additional classes only available through Les Mills Virtual/OnDemand include GRIT Athletic, GRIT Cardio, Sh’Bam, and Barre. The flexibility these classes offer include the variety of types of classes and how long of a class the participant wants to workout. Most classes offer 30, 45, and 60-minute workouts. “There are so many different classes (types and length) that I just keep cycling through them, and it never gets old,” stated Whitaker. Virtual classes allow participants the flexibility to workout at a time that best fits their schedule. “I don’t have a set time to come workout,” stated Lance. “So for me, a set class is not going to happen. With Virtual, I can come in and know that I’m going to get a quality workout, an awesome workout, anytime I come in here.” If you are interested in trying a Les Mills Virtual/ OnDemand class but are unsure of what to expect, take a few words of encouragement from Lance. “Don’t be nervous! Don’t worry about looking silly or feeling silly. Try something new because you will learn and get better. It’s a stress-free workout. Just try it! Les Mills Virtual is the best thing in town as far as getting a quality workout at your pace on your time instead of a set time. That’s the best part of it.” ●

“Our family is totally sold on The Kroc Center’s swim lesson program! The staff is so caring and concerned that each child receives the instruction they need as individuals. I would fully recommend The Kroc Center for your swimming needs, whether it is for swim instruction or the multitude of exercise classes they offer.”
