The Benefits of Private Music Lessons Personalized Training
Less Frustration, More Motivation
Every child learns in his/her own way, at his/her own pace. Private music lessons can provide instruction that meets the specific learning style of each child. One-on-one music lessons are all about finding ways to help your child learn in the way that works best for him/her.
If a student is having trouble or feeling frustrated, the oneon-one attention he/she gets at a private music lesson will more likely result in a solution. Students who have been performing for more than a few years find it a lot easier to stay focused with the help of a private instructor.
Guaranteed Success With a private instructor, a child learns much more quickly the fundamentals of playing. A solid foundation is established, and the student can keep learning, playing and succeeding—and that’s fun! The child builds confidence and determination, not to mention the desire to continue playing.
Instant Feedback With private music lessons, corrections and advice—as well as praise and encouragement—are delivered instantly and constantly.
Effective Practice Every young musician needs to learn how to practice. A student spends hours each week practicing, and that time needs to be well spent. A good private instructor will send the student home weekly with the proper practice skills so the student gets the most out of practice time. Just as important, the student won’t dread practice time, because he/she will have control over it and can expect results.
12
Winter / Spring 2019 | KrocQuincy.org | 217-222-5762
Once past the beginner stages, a music student may not know where to go next. A private instructor can help the student discover what new music to explore and what goals to pursue. Sometimes all a student needs is someone to report to on a regular basis, so he/she knows there is accountability.

Archery provides a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages, sizes, athletic abilities, and physical capabilities to build developmental assets. It helps to create a framework for growth in areas such as support, empowerment, boundaries and expectations, and constructive use of time.
CENTERSHOT MINISTRIES Centershot Ministries offers a spiritual component based on the National Archery in the Schools Program model. This curriculum works alongside practical archery principles learned in community based archery to provide an ideal means of evangelism. The Salvation Army has formed partnerships with The National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) and Safari Club International (SCIF) to make recreational and competitive archery available to local corps and community centers. Our leaders are certified Basic Archery Instructors through NASP training provided via The Salvation Army Outdoors.

Jaz reminded his students that fitness is fun when he dressed up in an 80s costume to teach the Upstream group fitness class on Halloween!
H
aving been a member of The Kroc Center and working as a fitness and gym attendant for two years, Jazmyne (Jaz) James is no stranger to most Kroc patrons. However, he is a fresh face to our group fitness instructor lineup. In a short time, Jaz has taken on new responsibilities. He decided from the time that he began work as a fitness and gym attendant that he wanted to grow within his role at The Kroc Center. “I am the type of person who always wants to progress in any atmosphere that I’m in. When I was hired as a fitness and gym attendant, it was perfect because I knew all of the machines that people can use and how to assist them. But I was already looking at how I could grow within The Kroc Center. I thought of instructing or personal training. Once the opportunity became available to become an instructor, I was all for it!”

Overcoming Obstacles Jaz became an aquatic group fitness instructor in September 2018 in addition to his duties as a fitness and gym attendant and rock wall attendant. As if three jobs aren’t enough, he is going to school and studying exercise science. Staying in shape and working out has been an important part of Jaz’s life since he started playing football at the age of 12. Through the years, he has had many sports-related injuries. While no one enjoys the downtime that an injury requires for healing, Jaz took advantage of his time injured to learn various forms of strength and conditioning to remain healthy and active. “The time I spent learning alternative ways to stay healthy and active made me want to help people who are trying to get in shape. I know the struggle of trying to get and stay in shape. So many people think that I’m in such good shape,

r lineup. Fitness Instructor Maria Bichsel. Maria worked with Jaz to help him understand how it felt to be a class participant in the water in contrast to being the instructor on dry ground. “Training with Maria greatly affected how I teach my class. It was a great learning opportunity from a great mentor.”
“I know the struggle of trying to get and stay in shape. So many people think that I’m in such good shape, but they don’t realize what I’ve been through.”
Open Heart, Open Mind Jaz may have his hands full with school and his job duties at The Kroc Center, but he has no regrets in adding group fitness instructor to his job title. “I enjoy learning new things and growing. I’m at a place in my life where I used to be young and cocky, but now I can humble myself and know that you’re never too old to learn something new.” We can all learn a lesson from Jaz. Pursue your goals, always be willing to learn, and don’t let fear or the chaos of life stop you from helping others if that is what you are gifted at doing. The Kroc Center is blessed to have group fitness instructors who love what they do, invest in our members, and are each inspired to instruct. but they don’t realize what I’ve been through. Having gone through those injuries, it helps me to relate better with other people who are struggling to overcome obstacles on their journey to become healthier.”
Becoming an Instructor While Jaz had been interested in becoming a fitness instructor, he was still nervous to start his new position. “Even if you go into a situation with fear or concern there is always room for growth and improvement. Once I started training to become a group fitness instructor, I picked it up quickly and learned a lot. If its something that I’m passionate about, I’m determined to work at it,” stated Jaz. Jaz constructs his entire group fitness class, from choosing the music for each track, to creating the choreography. Training to teach his class was made easier with the help of Group
Are you interested in becoming a group fitness instructor? Just take a piece of advice from Jaz. “Relax! Don’t over think it. Be yourself. Don’t try to be anyone else and feel like you have to be perfect. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Mistakes are just a part of life. Just go into instructing with an open heart and an open mind, be humble, and you will be able to help others.”

Les Mills Group Fitness
A Million Reasons NOT to Workout Dana Tipton is proof that no matter how hectic life may be, there is always time for fitness!
ADana has her hands s a mother of four,
full with her children’s school, activities, and homework, not to mention that she works full-time and has decided to go back to school to pursue a career in nursing. Dana was a group fitness instructor at The Kroc Center for four years in which she taught Les Mills group fitness classes. Dana’s routine was turned upside-down when she decided to step away from instructing fitness classes and go back to school. She went from teaching classes several times a week to being unable to attend any group fitness classes for six months. “I have a busy schedule. Between my children, my work schedule (I work 13-hour shifts), and going to school fulltime, my time is limited, and I am unable to make it to regularly scheduled group fitness classes. When my schedule changed so abruptly that I couldn’t workout as much as I wanted to with group fitness, I was sad, because group fitness classes were something that I really loved. It was a big lifestyle change. When you can’t get a regular workout scheduled every week, everything is going to change. You’re going to be more fatigued, you're not going to feel as confident, you’re not going to feel as physically able, lose flexibility quickly, and you lose muscle mass & strength very quickly,” stated Dana when asked about her extended absence from group fitness classes. When The Kroc Center began offering Les Mills Virtual classes, Dana was thrilled. Les Mills Virtual allows her the freedom to choose when she works out in the class setting that she loves so much. Les Mills Virtual allows her to attend three to four classes a week. She most frequently takes BODYPUMP™, BODYFLOW™, and CXWORX™.
“When the group fitness classes became available to me again because of Les Mills Virtual, it really was a good thing for me. It’s been helpful. The Les Mills Virtual classes work better for my schedule than conventional group classes. I can come early in the morning before work or before my kids go to school, or I can come in the middle of the afternoon after I get out of school for the day. I’ve also taken virtual classes later in the evening after the group fitness classes are finished. It’s a real benefit to be able to keep a regular workout schedule, and Les Mills Virtual classes help with that.” Les Mills Virtual even allows Dana to spend time with her kids while encouraging activity and a healthy lifestyle. Her daughter has taken BODYFLOW™ with her, while her son, who has started weight lifting, has taken BODYPUMP™ with her. Dana says “it’s a fun family experience!” Even after being a fitness instructor, Dana feels as though Les Mills Virtual classes challenge her. “The virtual classes feel just like being in a conventional group fitness class. I don’t even realize that I’m not in a large group setting like I normally would be. The virtual instructors are very motivating. It’s the same feel as a typical class,” stated Dana.
Do you identify with Dana’s story? Whether you’re going to school, working full time, or juggling your family's schedule, The Kroc Center has many options to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Dana has some words of encouragement for anyone feeling overwhelmed with working fitness into their schedule. “Look at the schedule, look at the group fitness schedule and the virtual schedule. Get an idea of what fits for you, try a wide variety of things and find something that you enjoy and start there. Start with Scan with your what you like the best because that’s phone to see daily class schedule! going to keep you motivated and going.” Winter / Spring 2019 | KrocQuincy.org | 217-222-5762

Group Fitness Was the training to become an instructor difficult?
I started training for Water in Motion by watching the videos that were provided. The week before my class started, I did in-home training with Kroc Center Group Fitness Instructor Maria Bichsel. Maria helped me a lot! She helped me learn little tips and secrets to memorizing the tracks, and how to know when to cue with the music. I’m glad that I asked her for help. I don’t know that I would have gotten it all, and I don’t know if I’d be as confident as I am now if I wouldn’t have had her help.
Does your daughter ever participate with you at home while your practicing?
She does! She will say ‘”mom can you show me that move again?”'
Meet
Kate Shuker H
ow long have you been a fitness instructor? I have been a group fitness instructor
since August 2018. Water in Motion is my first class I have taught. But, I was a member of The Kroc Center for four years before I became a group fitness instructor.
What do you enjoy most about being a group fitness instructor? I like being an instructor because all of the people in my class are so friendly and happy. The participants tell me when they enjoy the class, which is encouraging and makes me happy!
How long were you interested in becoming an instructor?
I didn’t even know I was interested until Fitness & Wellness Specialist Melissa Harris asked me if I was interested in becoming an instructor. When my daughter started PreK, I didn’t have anything to do with my time, so I started attending group fitness classes with my mom. I was taking BodyPump one day and Melissa asked me if I would be interested in becoming an instructor.
What held you back?
I was super nervous! When Melissa first asked me I said “No, absolutely not. There is no way I could be an instructor!” After I asked Melissa a few more questions and realized that I would be teaching Water in Motion, which would be a completely new program, I felt more comfortable and became interested in becoming a fitness instructor. I was terrified up until my first day. I had just never done it before, so it was scary. I am much more comfortable in class now!
What do you think is most rewarding about being a fitness instructor? Hearing positive feedback from my class participants is extremely rewarding!
What has impacted your experience as a group fitness instructor?
I think that because I took Les Mills classes, which are choreographed to music and knowing how the other instructors use various techniques, has impacted the way I instruct. If I had never taken a class and then become an instructor, it would be completely different.
Do you have a favorite memory or funny story? I don’t have any yet, but there have been a few times when I have almost fallen off of my stool, so the ladies in my class have funny stories, I’m sure.
Do you have any advice or words of encouragement for someone who might be interested in becoming an instructor?
It sounds super scary at first, but it's not. All of the group fitness instructors are willing to help you. It’s so easy to get into it and become comfortable with what you are teaching. Melissa is super easy to talk to and go to for help. Just do it! Winter / Spring 2019 | KrocQuincy.org | 217-222-5762

4
INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO SOMEONE NEW
We always see new faces at The Kroc Center during the new year. For many of these new members, it is their first time to use a fitness facility. Don’t allow the gym to be an intimidating place for our new members. Use your knowledge of the facility equipment to ease the anxiety of the newer members around you. A smile and friendly hello can comfort even the most apprehensive of new members.
5
LEARN THE NAME OF THE WELCOME DESK ATTENDANT
Have you noticed a Welcome Desk attendant who knows you by name and checks you into the facility before you even reach the desk? That is intentional! Our Welcome Desk staff work diligently to learn the names of our members to create a warm and welcoming customer service experience. They enjoy getting to know our members. The next time you are greeted with a smile and are told “I’ve got you checked-in,” simply ask for the attendant’s name. Getting to know our #KrocCommunity is always a good idea!
REGISTER YOUR CHILD 6 FOR A FINE ARTS CLASS During the cold, damp winter months, it is easy for kids to get in the routine of staying at home and watching television or playing video games. Instead, engage their imagination with a fine arts class. Whether it is crafts, painting, or learning a new instrument, our education and fine arts courses will help your child to stay engaged and active!
PLAY A GAME WITH YOUR 7 KIDS IN THE LEDGE The Ledge isn’t just for kids! Don’t just check your child into The Ledge, surprise them one night and join them in the fun. Pick out a board game, video game, or interactive activity and make some memories. (See page 9 for more information about the new and improved Ledge Game Room.)
TRY A NEW MACHINE 8 IN THE FITNESS AREA Don’t let your workout routine become stale. Using a new machine can be intimidating, but with the help of our gym and fitness attendants, you can learn how to properly use a new machine.
WALK A MARATHON 9 ON THE INDOOR TRACK A marathon is 26.2 miles. Give yourself a deadline and complete your own marathon. It doesn’t matter if you complete it in one day or one month. Grab a friend and start your cardio!
TAKE A RIDE DOWN 10 THE BIG RED SLIDE! Taking a ride down the big red slide is just the cherry on top of a perfect day spent at The Kroc Center! (It’s not just for kids!)
HAVE YOUR OWN NEW YEAR GOALS?
?
When you check one off of your list, take a selfie, post it to social media, and tag The Kroc Center in the photo. We love to see how our #kroccommunity stays #krocstrong!

I can relate to those in our community who need to make a healthy lifestyle change. I made a commitment to live a healthier life 12 years ago. I started off slowly. I made changes to my diet by adding more fruits and vegetables and began working out. As I started to become more interested in health and wellness, I began educating myself on those topics.
“I am looking forward to building relationships and guiding others on their journey to becoming healthier, no matter how old or young they may be.” After losing 70lbs, I decided to go back to school and pursue a career that would allow me to use my knowledge and experience to help others on their health and wellness journey. In this new position at The Kroc Center, I am looking forward to building relationships and guiding others on their journey to becoming healthier, no matter how old or young they may be.”

Leave a Legacy
Some people’s legacies are written on monuments. Yours can be written on lives. The Salvation Army has many financial planning options to help you plan your estate. Planned gifts take many forms, providing additional income for you and/or your heirs, reducing income and estate taxes, relieving you and your heirs of complicated financial management responsibilities and helping to fulfill your personal, humanitarian and charitable objectives. Planned gifts can be made in cash, real estate, stocks, bonds, personal property or life insurance.
Bequests by Will
One of the simplest planned gifts is a bequest through your Will in which your designate either a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate. Sometimes even leaving the residue of your estate to charity, the money that’s “left-over” after you’ve taken care of your family, can have a significant impact. A bequest also can reduce the amount of your taxable estate, which may increase the actual amount you’re able to leave to loved ones.
Gift Annuity
A charitable gift annuity is a way to make a gift to support the causes that you care about. You can make a gift of cash or property to The Salvation Army. In return, we will make fixed payments for life to you and/or the life of a designated loved one. The amount you receive is determined by the size of your gift, your age and the age of your beneficiary. After all payments have been made, The Salvation Army will receive the remaining value of your gift to support the causes that matter to you. Depending upon your gift, you may receive the added benefit of mostly tax-free payments. You will receive a charitable deduction in the year that you set up the gift annuity.
Donations to support our Family Services programs can be sent to The Salvation Army, 405 Vermont, Quincy, IL 62301.

Development & Planned Giving
Charitable Remainder Trust
You may transfer cash or an asset into a charitable remainder trust. You will avoid capital gains tax and receive a charitable income tax deduction. These tax benefits are possible because you are making a gift of the trust remainder to The Salvation Army. Your benefits begin to add up! The trust makes regularly scheduled payments to you, which may increase your income.
Life Insurance
Contributions of life insurance can provide a substantial gift to The Salvation Army. The value of an ordinary policy at the time of the gift is tax deductible. If you continue paying the premiums, they also are deductible as charitable contributions. If a paid-up policy is given, the cost of purchasing a new paid-up policy at your current age is the value of the charitable deduction.
Payable-On-Death Accounts
Payable-upon-death bank accounts offer an easy way to keep money, even large sums of it, out of probate. All you need to do is properly notify your bank of whom you want to inherit the money in the account or certificate of deposit. The bank and the beneficiary you name will do the rest, bypassing probate court entirely.
Retirement Accounts
Consider naming The Salvation Army as the beneficiary of your retirement accounts while leaving your cash and other investment assets to your heirs. Why? Charities are tax exempt and, unlike your heirs, will not pay taxes on IRAs and other retirement plans. Naming a charity as the beneficiary of a retirement account is easy.
Some people’s legacies are written on monuments. Yours can be written on lives. You can make a beneficiary designation by completing a simple form provided by your plan administrator. Then leave your heirs the assets, like your home or stocks, that can step up to fair market value when you pass away. This permits your heirs to see these assets with little or no tax due and make use of their full inheritance.
Questions
If you have questions about which plan is best for you, please call Development Director, Patty Douglas at 217-231-5627, or Assistant Development Director, Matt Schmidt at 217-231-5694 to learn how confidential, personal financial planning can help you achieve your goals, while helping sustain The Salvation Army’s life-changing mission. Group Fitness interested in becoming a group fitness instructor. She helped me get in contact with the Fitness & Wellness Specialist Melissa Harris to see if instructing would be the right fit for me.
Did you have apprehensions or fears about instructing?
Yes, I had multiple fears. I wanted it to be a challenging class and be able to do all of the moves correctly. I wanted to be sure that when people are taking time out of their day to come to class, that it is a good workout for them. I wanted to be sure that I could do that. A great thing about Les Mills is they teach you how to provide a good workout.

H
ow long have you been a group fitness instructor?
I have been a group fitness instructor since midAugust 2018. I was a member at The Kroc Center and attended group fitness classes before I became a group fitness instructor.
Do you enjoy being a fitness instructor?
Yes, I do. It is definitely a different perspective than being a participant. It is challenging, and I like it!
Was the training to become a group instructor difficult? It was physically challenging because it was a twoday process. However as long as I was prepared, it wasn’t difficult. Also, Group Fintness Instructor Logan Reller helped me out a lot; she is the other CXWorx instructor at The Kroc Center.
What do you enjoy most about being a fitness instructor at The Kroc Center?
What do you think is most rewarding about being a group fitness instructor?
How long were you interested in becoming an instructor?
Do you have any advice or words of encouragement for someone who might be interested in becoming a group fitness instructor?
I enjoy that it holds me accountable to my own personal workout. I enjoy that I have to challenge my memory to learn the routines and challenge my strength to be able to do it appropriately, correctly, and safely, as well as show people how they are supposed to do the workout. It has been a good experience.
I thought about it two years ago. I always had it in the back of my mind that if the opportunity presented itself, I’d be interested in trying out.
What caused you to pursue becoming a group fitness instructor? Angie Duerr, Membership Manager, asked me if I was
When participants leave and say “it was a great class.” Those participants took 30 minutes out of their day to join me in a hard workout, and they enjoyed it. That is what is most rewarding to me!
It does not take near as much time to prepare as I thought it would. I thought I was going to have to spend hours preparing so that I could teach a good class. It has come a lot easier than I thought it would. It’s a very smooth process. Pursue it! It is worth asking the questions. There is a great support system at The Kroc Center. You’re not going at it alone. Go for it!
Interested in becoming a group fitness instructor? The Kroc Center is seeking instructors for new classes to add to our schedule! Please contact Fitness & Wellness Specialist Melissa Harris at 217-231-5638 or Melissa_Harris@USC.SalvationArmy.org for more information.
