SCULPTUREFESTIVAL 2014

The opening of the Tucson Sculpture Festival 2014 had its largest attendance in its five-year history. A record crowd of over 1000 enjoyed this year’s amazing exhibition and was one of Tucson’s best-attended art exhibitions in its history. This year had 70 sculptors exhibiting their unique creations for the Tucson public to view. Several pieces sold opening night and more sales are expected during the two-week exhibition. The art on display exhibited a wide range of mediums from ceramic to bronze, found objects to mixed media as well as a massive kinetic sculpture. Works by internationally recognized artists as well as local emerging artists were on exhibit at this year’s event. The comments given by the public were overwhelmingly positive and many art patrons said the quality of sculpture was as good as they had seen anywhere in the U. S. today.

Moheeb Zara made 3D scans of visitors and sculptures during the opening night. He drove all the way down from HeatSync Labs hackerspace in Mesa, bringing both his 3D scanner and the Makerbot Replicator 3D printer, to the Art Gallery on February 1st. Then Metalphysic foundry in Tucson CNC milled three scans in Styrofoam—a full-sized body scan, a half-sized body scan, and a head scan twice life-sized—to be exhibited in the Art Gallery just days later. Other 3D prints from the scans were made by the Xerocraft hackerspace in Tucson, Arizona.
