YOU AND YOUR bIG IDEAS GALLERY (YAYbIG) I started You And Your Big Ideas Gallery (YAYBIG) in December 2012 with the goal to allow Tucson artists a place to show off their visions. Since I am a woodblock printer, I bring my personal focus on printmaking to YAYBIG. I use YAYBIG as a platform to show, explore and get folks interested in printmaking, and making prints themselves. I consider YAYBIG a laboratory, for artists to experiment and question their Big Ideas.

YAYbIG GOES ON TOUR Prints travel easily. We can load an entire collection in a Honda Fit, drive across the desert, and exhibit prints in a pop-up gallery that evening. So far we have shown in El Paso, Albuquerque and HENRY MORALES
Phoenix, and would like to extend the reach to Las Cruces, Los Angeles and other Southwestern cities. Moreover, we always bring new prints home to excite the artists back in Tucson. Thus the aim of Yay Big Southwest is to create a dialog between the neighboring artists, in this region that faces three art centers—Mexico, California and New York. Hopefully our kindred artists will respond to each other's work, and renew their enthusiasm for creating more prints, paintings and sculptures.

I began to wonder how those prints might reach a larger audience, and imagined the Yay Big Gallery as a staging area for bigger shows. As this whim grew, I dreamed of exhibiting in far away cities. That idea blossomed after I

prints can be moved with less worry, and thus are perfect for cross pollinating art between the yuccas and saguaros.
Technically this was not my first traveling print show, as Gabriel Jaureguiberry let us show for a month in Albuquerque at Ace Barbershop (July 2012). However the El Paso "pop-up" exhibition gave us ideas—and we followed-

print shows, as he is a master relief printmaker himself. I hide in my tiny studio in the back of the building, attending as many of Joe's First Saturday openings as I can.
My renewed print fever goes back a little further, to when Martin Quintanilla joined the Sculpture Resource Center in Tucson. He brought all his relief prints to his new studio, which inspired Gonzalo Espinosa to start making silk screen monoprints once again. That culminated in a print fair at the Sculpture Resource Center (June, 2012) ; and then Gonzalo, Joshua Woodhall and I started working together as the print collective "Taller Sin Miedo." Joe Marshall gave our collective a show in at the Yay Big Gallery (March 2013). Before then I had been shuttling between Southwestern cities, interacting with the local artists. I lived in Juarez and Midland for a bit, collaborated on frescoes in Lubbock, San Angelo, El Paso and Tucson, and frequented drawing groups in Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Phoenix and Austin. Basically I've been dodging gentrification ever since I left Albuquerque on Cinco de Mayo, 2007. Working out of my car, I treated the whole Southwest as my studio. Thus it is only natural to go back and show prints, and buy a few also, in the cities where I know the artists.

This catalog documents those prints which I have collected since 2012. I favor prints that surface in public (having made it out of the print studio), and which lean towards the style of the Taller de Grafica Popular. However, I also admire Japanese printmakers, and appreciate contemporary styles as well. The prints in the catalog reflect only what I have seen in my travels, and what I could afford to buy. Thus the catalog may not represent the best work from each artist, nor is it inclusive, lacking many Tucson and other Southwestern printmakers. Beyond just documenting my collection, I see this self-published catalog as a tool— to instigate more printmaking, and encourage admirers to collect prints. The catalog even KRRRL
suggests that artists break into new territories, like "Augmented Reality" or "Columiere" MYKL wELLS
prints. We are already using the laser cutter to make woodblock prints, and look forward to experimenting with "waterless lithography." Furthermore, we even bought some prints

from Etsy for the collection . Why not push printmaking into the 21st century? I was delighted to get prints for this catalog from Toru Sugita and Juan Fuentes, both of whom I met at the Mission cultural Center in San Francisco, back in the 90s. We have been encouraged by Manuel Guerra, Lecturer at UTEP and printmaker. We'd also like to thank Regina Held of New Grounds Print Workshop in Albuquerque, and Ruben Gonzales of 11th Monk3y in Phoenix, for allowing Yay Big Southwest to show our prints in their spaces. This catalog debuts in June, 2014 at the mothership—Yay Big Gallery in downtown Tucson (174 E. Toole Avenue)—for the month long Yay Big Southwest print show. Now we have something to look at during the weekends, when we artists gather for "mental menudo" and talk about what we are going to print next. As a follow up, we are sponsoring a Yay Big Print Exchange of 8x10 inch prints, due September 15th, 2014. More details can be found online at YayBigPrintExchange.blogspot.com Prints have to be seen! In catalogs, museums, popup galleries, coffee houses, barbershops, print fairs, on the streets. Let’s make some noise.

Michael Contreras's print was selected for the 2011 All Souls Procession poster. The next year, Martin Quintanilla, a prolific printmaker himself, and Jorge Gonzales recreated that print as a float for the 2012 All Souls Procession (AllSoulsProcession.org). We also recreated the Mayan painting by Martin Quintanilla and Joshua Woodhall.

“Lumiere” means “light” in French, “Coleur” means “color.” The prefix “Co-” indicates “along with.” The word, COLUMIERE, coined by the artist, is the interaction of color in art when colored LED light is shined on it. Reid Silvern and Ruy Ley are developing "Columiere" images, where different colored lights can actually change the image. This color approach could also be used for future prints as well.
