Z podróży po... – Pomniki ... from a Journey – Monuments

Pomniki to cykl fotograficzny, którego założeniem jest przyjrzenie się polskim pomnikom „pod włos”; znalezienie tych, które rozsadzają jednolity obraz przeszłości. Zestawienie zdjęć w dyptyki i tryptyki tworzy „konstelacje” przeciwstawiające sobie historie, które te pomniki opowiadają.

Monuments are a photographic series whose aim is to take a closer look at Polish monuments, “against the grain”; to find the ones which deconstruct the homogeneous image of the past. Putting together the photos in diptychs and triptychs results in “constellations” which juxtapose the (hi)stories told by these monuments.

Zależało mi na pokazaniu, że obraz przeszłości stwarzany przez te pomniki pełen jest pęknięć, będących wynikiem z jednej strony polityki historycznej, z drugiej – indywidualnego doświadczenia. Sądzę, że takie pęknięcia są kluczowe dla rozumienia Polskości – wyjątkowego charakteru tego doświadczenia. Pomniki powstały z namysłu nad moim statusem bycia „pomiędzy”. Pochodzę ze Śląska Cieszyńskiego – obszaru nieoczywistych podziałów tożsamościowych; jako emigrant wiele lat spędziłem w Niemczech, a po przyjeździe do Polski zamieszkałem na Mazowszu. Poczucie braku jednoznacznej przynależności uczuliło mnie na momenty, w których owa przynależność przestaje być oczywista, bezproblemowa. Dlatego pomniki niejako nie na miejscu – pomniki „absurdalne”, „niewygodne”, „bolesne” czy po prostu niezgodne z jednowymiarowym charakterem polskiej powojennej tożsamości narodowej – były dla mnie szczególnie intrygujące, właśnie ze względu na ich wielogłosowość, a także potencjał stwarzania przeciw-historii. Pomniki te stały się dla mnie wizualnym dowodem na to, że nie ma jednej, właściwej, czy „prawdziwej” opowieści (narracji historycznej), że obraz przeszłości podlega ciągłym renegocjacjom i jest współtworzony przez tych, którzy go noszą w sobie.

I wanted to show that the image of the past created by these monuments is full of breaks caused by, on the one hand, historical politics, on the other – individual experience. I claim that these breaks are crucial for the understanding of Polish mentality – an exceptional dimension of this phenomenon. Monuments were conceived as a result of my reflection on “in-betweenness.” I come from the Cieszyn Silesia – a region of ambiguous identifications; as an emigrant (and a son of emigrants) I spent several years in Germany, and after coming back to Poland, I started living in Masovia. The feeling of a lack of unified sense of belonging sensitised me to these moments when this belonging ceases to be obvious, unproblematic. That is why monuments, as if out of their proper place – “absurd” monuments, “uncomfortable,”, “painful,” or just unsuitable for the one-dimensional character of Polish post-war national identity – proved especially intriguing for me, due to their polyphonic character but also the potential to provoke antihistories. These monuments became for me the visual evidence that there can be no one, proper or “true” story (historical narration), and that the image of the past is constantly be re-negotiated and co-created by those who carry it within themselves.

Zaciekawiło mnie również to, że tacy artyści jak Xawery Dunikowski czy Władysław Hasior brali, a inni wciąż biorą, udział w kształtowaniu zbiorowych, narodowych wyobrażeń. To jakże problematyczne uwikłanie sztuki w służbę rzeczywistości politycznej jest w tym kontekście bardzo znaczące. Szczególnie jeśli weźmie się pod uwagę napięcie między znaczeniem a wartością artystyczną pomnika. Odnoszę wrażenie, że pomniki o wielkiej sugestywności i wysokiej klasie artystycznej oddziałują bardziej niż pomniki średnie, „klasyczne”, których są tysiące.

I was also intrigued by the fact that artists such as Xawery Dunikowski or Władysław Hasior played an active role, while other still do, in shaping of collective national imagery. In this context, the involvement of art in service of political reality seems very important. Especially if one considers the tension between the meaning and the artistic value of a monument. I have a feeling that monuments of great suggestiveness and high artistic value exercise greater influence than those mediocre, “classic” of which there are thousands.

Jestem świadomy tego, że Pomniki nie wyczerpują problemu. W pewnym sensie takie wyczerpanie nie jest w ogóle możliwe. Historia dzieje się na naszych oczach, na naszych oczach jest monumentalizowana. Moja podróż po Polsce odbyła się wzdłuż szlaków w taki czy inny sposób mi bliskich, szukałem nieciągłości w tym, co już niejako oswoiłem. Pomniki są wyrazem artystycznego namysłu nad nieoczywistością tożsamości miejsc i ludzi, nad przenikaniem się różnych historii, ich reprezentacji.

I am aware that the Monuments do not exhaust the issue's complexity. In a sense, such an exhaustion is not at all possible. History is created on our very eyes and monumentalised at the same time. I took a journey along the trails which in one way or another are close to my history. I searched for discontinuities in what I did so far domesticated. Monuments provide an expression of artistic reflection on the non-obviousness of the places' and peoples' identities, on the intermingling of various histories and their representations.

Kielce, Cultural Centre: stone commemorating the camping place of Tadeusz Kościuszko during the insurrection of 1 794 [during the first (1 772) and second (1 793) partition of Poland most of the country was divided between Russia, Prussia and Habsburg Austria; Kościuszko started an uprising against the Russian occupant that soon had to falter and resulted in the third partition (1 795), erasing Poland from the maps for 1 23 years] / Kielce, Cultural Centre / Kielce, Cultural Centre: the only Miles Davis monument on earth, erected on the 1 0th anniversary of the artists' death, 2001 .

Dłużek by Jedwabno; monument of comrade W. Bralski, 1 961 ; the inscription reads: "To comrade W. Bralski, 1 st Secretary of the Party Commitee of the Polish Worker's Party, on the 1 5th anniversary of his murder by reactionary bands. The people of Nidzica. June 1 961 ." [the sign on th monument is the 'Kotwica' (Anchor), an emblem of the Polish underground for the struggle to regain independence during WWII] / Piduń by Jedwabno; a cross commemorating the (German) inhabitants of the village that died in WWI, 1 91 8(?).

Jedwabne; monument "Of the Jews of Jedwabne and its surroundings, men, women and children, fellow hosts of this land, murdered, burnt alive in this place July 1 0th, 1 941 ", 1 0 lipca 2001 / Jedwabne; monument "Commemorating the deportees that died of hunger and cold, murdered in the gułags of Syberia and Kazakhstan. Grateful survivors and Polish patriots of Jedwabne", 2002. [After a long and heated debate, the information that it was Polish people who murdered the Jews of Jedwabne, was omittied in the inscription; one year after the erection of the monument, the inhabitants erected 'their' counter-monument, commemorating their own suffering]

Rokitka, monument of general Alexandr Samnonov, 1 91 8-20, the plaque was removed at the turn of the 1 960s, the monument was renovated from the funds of the Embassy of the Russian Federation; the inscription reads: "General Samsonov, Hindenburg's adversary in the battle of Tannenberg, died here August 30th, 1 91 4". / Olsztyn; monument of Mikołaj Kopernik, Johannes Goetz (supposedly the figure was conceived by the emperor Wilhelm II himself), the inscription (subsequently added) reads: "To the defender of the city of Olsztyn from the Teutonic aggressor, the great Polishman Mikołaj Kopernik, grateful compatriots" 1 91 6.
