Katie Tooley is in her third year as sports information director at Ottawa University. Tooley covers all 14 OU athletic teams. She regularly updates the athletics website (www.ottawabraves.com), writes and distributes press releases to media outlets, compiles stats and archives team information. Before taking the full-time position at OU, she spent a semester as an intern in the sports information department at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. At CU she was responsible for women’s soccer and baseball along with covering other CU sporting events such as men’s soccer and men’s and women’s basketball.

Photo Policy Only accredited photographers on assignment will be issued credentials. Copies of the game rosters will be available prior to the game. Phone Lines KCAC policy requires one courtesy phone line for the official radio station of visiting member schools. Tooley is a former All-KCAC performer in basketball and track at OU and worked in the sports information department for three years during her time at OU. She is working on her Masters in Sports Administration from the University of Kansas

Student Assistant Amanda is in her third season as a student assistant and is a senior at Ottawa University. Amanda will be helping with game day statistics and is in charge of statistical distribution. Tooley is a member of NAIA-SIDA and CoSIDA. She earned her first CoSIDA award when her 20082009 men’s and women’s basketball combined media guide earned a Citation for Excellence in Publications with a fourth place finish in Division C of the MultiSport Guide category. Tooley has had four publications earn NAIA-SIDA honors with her 2008 combined men’s and women’s basketball guide finishing 4th and her men’s and women’s soccer finishing fifth. In 2007 her football media guide finished 6th and her combined basketball guide finished ninth.

Forwards Coach Shaw likes the depth of the forwards this season, “Last year we only played two up top and only had two or three girls that could score goals for us. Now we are adding three up top and we are six or seven deep.” OU will be relying on a mixture of youth and veterans like freshmen Joann Glynn and Sheridan Horner and returners Whitney Bowen, Raechelle Sloan and Samantha Mayfield. The Lady Braves will also look to Kelsey Hanna to step up goal scoring production.

In 2008 the Lady Braves were one game away from qualifying for the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Tournament and are looking to become the first Ottawa University women’s soccer team to earn that distinction. OU finished the season with an overall record of 14-5-1 and a second place finish in the KCAC with a record of 7-2-0. The difference between last year’s team and this one is depth. The depth on this year’s team is making it very hard for the OU coaching staff to get their top 11. What is making it even more difficult is that 85 percent of the team has reported to the campus in shape and the team is learning a new system. “The girls are doing well with learning a new system and are picking it up very well,” said OU head coach Craig Shaw. “I have high expectations for this group.” The team itself has very high goals for the season but the coaching staff knows that to accomplish those goals the team has to be focused during every practice. “We have to make sure that we keep concentrating during every practice and during every game to achieve those goals,” said Shaw. “The expectation for this season is a national tournament berth, we were hoping last year, but this season we are really expecting to make the national tournament. We have the skill and the talent but it depends on how much the athletes want it.”

Midfielders The midfielders are very experienced with sophomores Amanda Just and Kelsey Meyer and junior Lizzie Wilkens returning. The OU coaching staff is expecting a lot more from Kasey Craven. “Kasey is coming back from a meniscus tear that she suffered last year and has gotten herself fit and injury free,” said Coach Shaw. The OU coaches are also expecting help from freshman Amanda Talbott, “She will help us out skill wise, we are just waiting to see how long it will take her to adapt to the college game,” said Shaw. Freshman Melissa Addington will be expected to contribute when she comes back from injury. The OU coaching staff believes that it will be a solid starting three. Defenders The OU coaching staff has changed up the defense from a year ago and right now are just trying to find the right combination. “It is going to be tough because we have a lot of talented girls back there,” said Coach Shaw. “Finding the right combination is going to be the key.” Junior college transfer Amber Webb is getting some time as a defender after moving from her midfield position. Another junior college transfer, Kristi French, is also expected to contribute to the defense. Returner Christie Johnson and freshman Stephanie Segura brings a lot of speed and talent to the defense. “If we can get Tara

Wood and Casie Kultgen injury free and fit then it will add a lot of depth to the defense,” said Shaw. “Getting Kultgen back from her knee injury will be a big plus because she brings that NCAA Division II experience.” Goalkeepers OU returns NAIA All-American Lauren Peil and the OU coaching staff brought in junior college transfer Nichole Bishop. Bishop was a college teammate of Amber Webb and Kristi French and brings that experience of winning a conference title at Cuyamaca Junior College. “There will be a real competition so it is going to be tight there,” said Shaw. “If someone gets injured then we have a really good backup.” The OU coaching staff does not have it set who is the number one goalkeeper and according to Coach Shaw, that is a very good sign. Schedule The schedule is one of the toughest in OU women’s soccer program history. “In the past there have been teams here (OU) that have done really well but have not played the type of teams that we are playing this year,” said Coach Shaw. The Lady Braves will face four teams that are ranked in the NAIA Women’s Soccer Preseason Poll. They are also playing six teams that were either ranked or went to the national tournament last year. In KCAC play Coach Shaw expects Kansas Wesleyan University and McPherson College to challenge the Lady Braves for the conference title. “When we go out and play a St. Ambrose, a Siena Heights, a Benedictine, a Southern Nazarene and a Rogers State those teams prepare us for the conference schedule.” The Lady Braves could enter the conference season ranked in the top 20 in the nation or enter the conference schedule really struggling. But the OU coaching staff believes that the Lady Braves have the ability to come through those games strong and be one of the top teams in the NAIA.

HEAD COACH 3RD SEASON 22-15-3 (.550) CARSON NEWMAN, 2005

Coach Shaw is in his third season as head coach of the Lady Braves Soccer program. Coach Shaw has coached 11 All-KCAC selections, two KCAC Freshmen of the Year, one KCAC Goalkeeper of the year, one Region IV selection and three NAIA All-Americans in his two seasons at OU. He has helped lead OU to two top three finishes in the KCAC and under his direction, the Lady Braves have played in two straight KCAC Tournaments, including one championship game. In 2008 Coach Shaw led OU to 14 victories, the third most in school history and a second place finish in the KCAC. OU had an overall record of 14-5-1 with a KCAC record of 7-2. Coach Shaw led the Lady Braves to its second straight KCAC Tournament and to their first championship game appearance since the 2005 season. The Lady Braves were defeated by #24 Kansas Wesleyan University, 1-0. Coach Shaw had six of his women’s soccer players earn post season honors with four first team All-KCAC selections and two second team. Whitney Bowen was a repeat selection at first team, Lizzie Wilkens earned first team honors after receiving second team in 2007 and Amanda Just and Lauren Peil were first team selections. Just earned KCAC Freshman of the Year and Peil was KCAC Goalkeeper of the Year. Christie Johnson and Kelsey Meyer were both second team selections for the Lady Braves as freshmen. For the second straight season Coach Shaw had an NAIA All-American selection on his team. In 2008 OU had two as both Just and Peil were both NAIA Honorable Mention All-American selections for the Lady Braves. The two student athletes were OU’s fourth and fifth women’s soccer player to have ever earned the honor. In his first season he led the Lady Braves to an 8-10-2 overall record and a 5-3-1 record in the KCAC for third place. OU qualified for the KCAC Post Season Tournament and the Region IV Soccer Tournament for the first time since 2005. Five players earned post season honors for the Lady Braves. Danielle Shanabrook, Niki Lukin and Natalie Olivarez earned honorable mention All-KCAC. Lizzie Wilkens earned second team honors and Whitney Bowen earned KCAC Freshman of the Year, first team All-KCAC, first team Region IV and was an honorable mention NAIA All-American selection.

of the women’s soccer program at Assumption High School in Davenport, Iowa. Coach Shaw helped lead St. Ambrose University (SAU) to its best finish in school history in 2005 when the Fighting Bees finished second in conference, were Conference Cup Finalist and regional semifinalists. In 2006 he helped SAU to the regional quarterfinals, the finals of the Conference Cup and a third place finish in conference. Coach Shaw also was the head women’s soccer coach at Assumption High School, a 1A school in Iowa that competes in the Mississippi Athletic Conference (MAC). Assumption is the only 1A School that participates in the MAC. He led the Knights to the Catholic Cup, a fifth place finish in conference, a regional final and a finish with a 10-6 record. He has also coached youth teams and coached the U-15 Girls Quad City Strikers, U-15 Boys Moline United and U-17 Girls Moline United. Shaw has played for over 20 years and has coached for over 10 while obtaining his Australian Senior Level Coaching Certificate and his NSCAA Advanced National Diploma. He graduated from NCAA Division II Carson-Newman College in 2005 and started for the ninth ranked team out of Tennessee. During his time there he helped CNC to two conference titles, led them to two conference cup finals, helped them appear twice in the national tournament and helped his team earn a number one ranking in the polls during his senior season. At Carson-Newman he earned a double major, a bachelor of science in accounting and business management with a marketing emphasis. He also has his masters in business administration from St. Ambrose University. Coach Shaw his wife Alexandra, OU’s spirit team coordinator, and their daughter Torey reside in Ottawa, Kan.

Bio: 2008-2009: Lauren started all 20 games in goal for the Lady Braves. She earned two KCAC Player of the Week honors and was named KCAC Goalkeeper of the Year as well as first team All-KCAC. She recorded her first career shutout versus Bellevue University (9/14). Lauren holds the school record for single season GAA (Goals Against Average) (0.55) and tallied 63 saves. She earned three straight shutouts versus Bellevue (9/14), Avila (9/17) and Southwestern Assemblies of God (9/20) and had a career and season high 11 saves versus Benedicine College (9/24). Lauren is now third in both career and season goalkeeping victories (14) and second in career shutouts (11). High School: Peil earned athletic letters in soccer and basketball for the Colts. She helped lead her high school team to a league championship and earned first team All-AVCTL, All-Region and All-State during her junior season. In her sophomore season Peil earned second team All-AVCTL, first team AllRegion and second team All-State.

Bio: 2008-2009: Hanna participated in all 20 contests this past season, starting 13. She led the KCAC in shots per game (4) and led OU in shots (80) and shots on goal (39). Hanna recoreded the first assist of her college career versus Avila University (9/17). She scored her first collegiate goal and recorded her first career multi-goal game versus Southwestern Assemblies of God (9/20). She earned second team All-KCAC in her freshman season at OU. Johnson tallied her first career assist versus Bethany College (10/8) and had nine shots on goal for Ottawa. High School: Johnson is from Highlands Ranch, Colo. and attended Mountain Vista High School. She earned three mvp awards and a overall team mvp award for Mountain Vista. On her club team she helped them to the semi-finals of the State Cup in 2006 where they played the National Champions, Real Colorado National. In 2007 she helped her team to the quarterfinals of the State Cup.

Bio: 2008-2009: Bowen earned first team All-KCAC for the second straigh year. She appeared in all 20 games, starting 17. Bowen scored her first goal of the season versus Central Christian College (9/9). She tallied her seventh career multi-goal game with two goals versus the University of Saint Mary (11/1) and dished out a career high two assists versus Northwood University (9/21). Bowen was second on the team in points (32), goals (13) and assists (6). She is now second all-time in career points (75), second in career goals (33) and first in career hat tricks (5). 2007-2008: Whitney started 20 games as a Lady Brave, scoring 20 goals and dishing out three assists in her freshman season. For her efforts, Whitney earned KCAC Player of the Week, first team All-KCAC, KCAC Freshman of the Year, first team All-Region IV and NAIA honorable mention All-American honors. Amanda earned her first career hat trick in OU’s 5-0 victory over Central Christian College (9/9). She scored her first career game winner versus previously unbeaten Bellevue University (9/14) and was a two-time KCAC Offensive Player of the Week selection. She scored a goal in five straight games; Central Christian, Bellevue, Avila Southwestern Assemblies of God and Northwood University. High School: Just earned four letters in soccer, two in basketball and two in cross country for the Trojans. She helped her club team to three straight state appearances, playing in the championship game all three times. She helped her high school team to a fourth place finish in 2005 and a third place finish in 2006 in Kansas 5A State. 15 Peoples Bank Field

This is the Lady Braves third season of playing at Peoples Bank Field. Overall, the Lady Braves have a 13-4-2 record with a 7-2-1 KCAC record on the field. During the 2008 season Peoples Bank Field hosted the 2008 Men’s and Women’s KCAC Soccer Championships. Peoples Bank Field features Fieldturf®, a registered trademark of Fieldturf Tarkett. It has been installed on more than 1,800 fields world-wide, several in continuous use for almost a decade. The turf has received wide acclaim for its forgiving nature, durability and grass-like performance. Fieldturf® users have also documented a reduction of sports injuries in comparison to the carpet-like artificial turf of the past. The field features an eight lane track that is named the Bill “Bo” Boucek Track.

19 History of OU Women’s Soccer

In 2001, the Braves struggled out of conference, yet in the KCAC lost only one match and were crowned Regular Season Co-Champions. This was the first KCAC Championship in the OU Women’s Soccer History. Overall, the Braves finished 8-12-0 in 2001.

Kelly Grgas-Wheeler was a three-time first team All-KCAC selection (1996, 97, 98) for the Lady Braves. She was also a member of the women’s basketball team. Her father, Mirko Grgas holds several men’s soccer records and was OU’s first three time NAIA All-American in any sport.

The Women’s Soccer Program started at Ottawa University in 1996. The first coach for the Women was Mike Cullina. With 13 players in the inaugural season, the Braves went 6-9-0 in 1996. The first win in the history of the Women’s program was a 3-1 victory over KCAC Conference rival McPherson College. In 1997, Cullina guided the Lady Braves to their first winning season with a 7-5-1 record. 1998 saw a change in coaches and an increase in the amount of games that would be played during the season. Tony Carbaugh had the Braves playing a full 18 game schedule, finishing the regular season at 8-10-0. Carbaugh remained with the team in 1999, finishing the season at 4-13-0 overall. In 2000, a new coach took over the reigns at OU. Matt Walberg, a former player on the Men’s team at OU in the 1980’s, guided the 2000 team to a 10-7-0 record and the second winning season in five years.

2002 saw the Women’s program get another coach - the fourth in seven years. Chip Wiggins took over in August of 2002. With no time to recruit, Coach Wiggins got through the season with a strong core of returners. The Lady Braves won the KCAC Tournament championship and advanced to the Region IV tournament for the first time in school history. The Braves fell to nationally ranked Newman University in the first round and finished the season 10-11-1 overall. 2003 saw Coach Wiggins first recruiting class, which increased numbers to 24 players, by far the most for any team since the program was started. The Braves started strong winning 8 of their first 10 matches. They were crowned Regular season KCAC champions and KCAC Tournament champions. The Lady Braves took an 11 match unbeaten streak into the Region IV Quarterfinal vs. Park University. Park won the match 4-3 in overtime, ending the Braves season at 16-3-2. A disappointing ending to a great season, but the Lady Braves did set 8 school records along the way. Rosa Johnston earned first team All-KCAC honors. Amber McGinnis, Nicki Luckin and Larissa Brown all earned second team honors and Jamie Francis was an honorable mention All-KCAC selction for the Lady Braves. The 2004 season saw another strong recruiting effort. The Braves started the season by winning their first 7 matches. The Braves stumbled at home vs. Baker, but got back on track winning their next 11 matches before losing to Park University in the Region IV Semifinal. The Braves were once again Regular Season KCAC Champions and KCAC Tournament Champions. The 2004 team is the

first in school history to win a Region IV match, the Braves defeated Dana College 2-1 in a Quarterfinal in Ottawa. The 2004 team finished the season 18-2. The Lady Braves saw another new coach in 2005 when Glenn Cahill took over the reigns of the program. He had been the boy’s soccer coach at Ottawa High School. The women continued their winning ways with an overall record fo 12-6 and a KCAC record of 9-0. OU qualified for its fourth consecutive Region IV tournament and won its fourth KCAC regular season championship in five years. The Lady Braves played Bellevue College in the Region IV Tournament. OU earned its highest ranking in the region with a #2 seed. It was a close game with Bellevue upending OU 2-1. Erica DeSantiago earned first team All-KCAC honors along with Michele Chapman. Rebecca Germain, Erin Carl and Anni Quarando earned second team honors and goalkeeper Stephanie Henderson was an honorable mention All-KCAC selection. DeSantiago and Chapman were both first team Region IV selections and earned the schoo’s first ever All-American honors when both of them received NAIA Honorable Mention All-American. The 2006 season was one of disapointment as the Lady Braves struggled in the non-conference going 0-11. In KCAC play the girls came together and had a 5-4 record. Erin Carl, Erin Prudence, Anni Quarando and Jara Vance were all selected honorable mention All-KCAC. 2007 saw a new coach for the Lady Braves in Craig Shaw from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. The Lady Braves started nine new players and put together a 8-10-2 season. OU finished third in the KCAC and last in the KCAC Tournament semifinals to McPherson College. OU’s success was good enough for them to qualify for a trip to the Region IV tournament. The Lady Braves’ first round opponent was Bellevue University. Jr. Lizzie Wilkens Erica DeSantiago was a two-time first team All-KCAC selection, earned KCAC Newcomer of the Year (2004) and KCAC Offensive Player of the Year (2005) recogniztion. She holds the school record for most goals in a season (24) and goals in a career (46). DeSantiago, along with teammate Michele Chapman earned OU’s first ever NAIA All-American awards in women’s soccer in 2005.

Freshman Whitney Bowen was a first team selection and also earned KCAC Freshman of the Year honors. Freshman Lizzie Wilkens was a second team selection, freshman Natalie Olivarez was an honorable mention selection, senior Nicki Lukin earned honorable mention honors and senior Danielle Shanabrook was an honorable mention selection as well. The honors didn’t stop there for Bowen, she became just the third women’s soccer player in OU history to earn Region IV first team honors. She also earned NAIA Honorable Mention AllAmerican honors at forward. Bowen became just the third Lady Brave to earn that honor since Erica DeSantiago and Michele Chapman earned the honor in 2005. In 2008 the Lady Braves continued to grow and improve with second year head coach Craig Shaw. Coach Shaw led OU to 14 victories, third all-time in single season wins, and a second place finish in the KCAC to Kansas Wesleyan University (14-5-1, 7-2-0). Ottawa qualified for the KCAC Tournament for the second straight year and made it to the championship game for the first time since the 2005 season. The Lady Braves lost in the KCAC Tournament Championship game 1-0 to #24 Kansas Wes-

leyan University of Salina, Kan. OU had six players earn All-KCAC honors and for the second year in a row the KCAC Freshman of the Year was from Ottawa. Whitney Bowen was a repeat selection at first team, Lizzie Wilkens earned first team honors and freshman Amanda Just and Lauran Peil were first team selections. Just was named KCAC Freshman of the Year and Peil earned KCAC Goalkeeper of the Year. Two more freshmen earned All-KCAC recognition with Kelsey Meyer and Christie Johnson both earning second team All-KCAC. Just led OU in goals (16) and scoring (36) while Raechelle Sloan led OU in assists (7). Out of the 24 players on the roster, OU had only one senior and one junior with the rest being freshman and sophomores. For most of the season the Lady Braves were receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches Top 25 Women’s Soccer Poll.

HEAD COACH 3RD SEASON 13-20-3 (.361) UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-PLATTEVILLE, 2003

Coach Casper is in his third season at Ottawa University. In his first two years at OU, Coach Casper has coached eight All-KCAC selections and one Region IV selection. In the 2008 season, the Braves improved on their 2007 win total by five victories and finished with an overall record of 9-9-1 and a third place finish in the KCAC with a record of 6-3-0. Ottawa qualified for the KCAC Tournament for the first time since the 2005 season. Coach Casper coached five AllKCAC selections with Colin Wylie earning first team, Chris Munoz being named second team and Marvin Graham, Philip Nguyen and Brian McAlister earning honorable mention. In his first season at the helm the Braves finished 4-11-2 overall and 2-6-1 in the KCAC. OU had four players earn post season honors. Andrew Moore was a second team AllKCAC selection. Marvin Graham and Junior Ibarra earned honorable mention All-KCAC and Chris Munoz was an honorable mention AllRegion IV selection at goalkeeper. Prior to coming to Ottawa University, Coach Casper spent one season at Barton County

Community College where he coached the women’s team to fifth place finish in the Jayhawk Conference. Before coaching at BCCC he was a head assistant at Bemidji State University, a NCAA Division II progarm in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The year before Casper’s arrival at Bemidji State, the team had a 5-13-1 overall record. In his first season he helped lead BSU to a 10-10 record and a fourth place finish in the conference tournament. In his second season at BSU, the team finished 12-4-7 overall and a second place record of 9-1-4 in the NSIC. Casper has been a staff coach for the Kansas Olympic Development Program, in charge of numerous clinics at Bemidji State, has been a volunteer assistant coach at the high school level and was the Bemidji Youth Soccer Coaching Coordinator. Casper earned a bachelor of science in social sciences with an emphasis in history from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 2003. He is now working towards his masters in sports studies from Bemidji State University. Casper was a four-year letter winner at UW-P and was involved in the Pioneer Student Athlete Advisory Committee (PSAAC), Inter-varsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). He has a NSCAA National Diploma/NSCAA State Goalkeeping Diploma (Level I); a NSCAA Advance Regional Diploma and a USSF “D” License. Coach Casper and his wife Kerry, who is the head softball coach at Maple Woods Community College, reside in Olathe.

Bio: 2008-2009: Zac played in 18 games, starting 16 from his midfielder position for the Braves. He tallied his first career assist and point versus Bethel College (10/25).

Bio: 2008-2009: Jeremy red-shirted his senior season at OU. 2007-2008: Allison played in 17 games, starting nine of them for the Braves. 2005-2007: Lettered two years at Parkland College in Champaign, Ill.

High School: Huffman earned three letters in soccer for the Crusaders. He helped his club team to a state championship in 2006 and helped lead Kapaun Mt. Carmel to the state title game in 2006 and 2007. He was also on the Olympic Development Program (ODP) State Team.

5-10 Jr. Midfielder/Defender Amarillo, Texas Tascosa Bio: 2008-2009: Marvin started all 19 games in 2008. He earned honorable mention All-KCAC and was second on the team in goals (5). He recorded the first goal of his career versus Doane (9/6) and scored the game tying goal on a penalty kick and the game winning goal versus Avila University (9/17). Marvin earned his first KCAC Player of the Week honor when he was selected as Offensive Player of the Week for week two (9/22).

Bio: 2008-2009: Michael was the only Brave to start all 19 games. He scored the first goal of his career versus Southwestern Assemblies of God (9/20). Michael was a two-time KCAC Defensive Player of the Week selection for the Braves.

2007-2008: Graham played in 15 games last season, starting 14. He earned honorable mention All-KCAC last season for the Braves. High School: Graham was a four year letterman in soccer and a two year letterman in cross country for the Rebels of Tascosa High School. He was a first team all-district selection his junior and season seasons. During his senior season, Graham played in a all-star game for Panhandle.

Peoples Bank Field

This is the Braves third season of playing at Peoples Bank Field. Overall, the Braves have a 5-11-2 record with a 3-5-1 KCAC record on the field. During the 2008 season Peoples Bank Field hosted the 2008 Men’s and Women’s KCAC Soccer Championships. Peoples Bank Field features Fieldturf®, a registered trademark of Fieldturf Tarkett. It has been installed on more than 1,800 fields world-wide, several in continuous use for almost a decade. The turf has received wide acclaim for its forgiving nature, durability and grass-like performance. Fieldturf® users have also documented a reduction of sports injuries in comparison to the carpet-like artificial turf of the past. The field features an eight lane track that is named the Bill “Bo” Boucek Track.

ment where the Braves placed fifth and third respectively. With the winning tradition came a demanding 20 game schedule against nationally ranked opponents such as UMSL, Eastern Illinois, Southern Illinois and the Air Force Academy, just to name a few. The 1971 team finished the season ranked 9th nationally, this ranking included NCAA schools. They did climb up to as high as 3rd nationally during the season. Coach Schoonover mentioned, “this was an impressive feat considering OU was competing against much larger schools.” Through 1971 the OU Braves had amassed a record of 74-29-3. Accompanying the success came budgetary problems and a need for the administration to bring the soccer program with the boundaries of the other sports.

Frank Lemp was a two-time all conference performer for the Braves. He holds the school record for most assists in a season (22) and in a career (42). Ottawa University Soccer 1965-Present Through the efforts of Ottawa University President Andrew B. Martin, a native of Ireland, soccer came to OU in 1963. Within two years the program grew from club status to a full-fledged varsity sport. Soccer is just one of the sports that has contributed to a rich and long heritage of winning teams at OU. The 1965 team was inexperienced but enthusiastic. Players, as has been tradition since then, came from all over the country and other parts of the world. This diverse group was led by O.U.’s first soccer coach Bob Schoonover, who led the team to a record of 3-7. By 1967 the players and the coach had learned (Schoonover had been a track coach), and the team experienced its first winning season (7-6-1). Now part of the MO-KAN Soccer Conference, which was established in 1966, along with Benedictine, Rockhurst, Tabor, Park and William Jewell, OU was well on to its winning ways. The post war “baby boom” brought many students to college and OU was no exception. Schoonover did much of his recruiting on the east coast; this brought many diverse but experienced players to OU (the east coast invasion). All this talent was ably molded and with the help of Schoonover’s Assistant Tony Van Leiden, the OU soccer team won its first MO-KAN Conference title and area championship which earned them a birth in the 1969 NAIA National Soccer Tournament. They placed sixth out of eight teams. 1969 was followed by realignment of soccer conferences, from the MO-KAN to the MidWest Conference and two more consecutive trips to the NAIA National Soccer Tourna-

This shift in emphasis brought a coaching change and a more “realistic” soccer schedule. Through the efforts of Tony Van Leiden, the new coach, and a few dedicated returning players, soccer was saved and a new era began. The dedication, enthusiasm and love for the sport of soccer never ended. Neither did the support from the soccer fans. Through the next five years Coach Van Leiden had to limit the playing schedule to nine matches per year and work with a drastically reduced budget. Nevertheless, players kept coming and experiencing O.U.’s special brand of soccer. Several players continued to make all-area teams, which suggest that talent and good coaching were still here, but some of the depth was gone. The middle 70’s saw the country plagued by inflation and the disappearance of the “baby boom” generation. Both had an affect on OU Soccer. The former kept the soccer budget trim; the latter made it more difficult to recruit students on campus. Records for the 1973-1974 and 1975 teams were .500, but as mentioned earlier, victories are sweeter when one is called the “underdog”. 1976 saw Coach Van Leiden’s first winning season 6-4, but also his last as Head Coach. Ron Dear, a former soccer standout and member of the first All-Decade Team, took over the reigns and guided the Braves to their second consecutive winning season (6-4) in 1977. (Coach Van Leiden continued on as the Assistant Head Coach). 1978 brought about another coaching change (the second change in as many years) and a renewed emphasis, which meant an increased playing schedule and greater emphasis on recruiting. Paul McNally, a successful Missouri High School soccer coach, led the Braves to their third consecutive winning season (10-7) and their first serious contention for the District X NAIA title since 1971. (They lost in a close game 2-3 to Bethany Nazarene). Coach McNally continued his recruiting efforts and

coaching success through the 1979 season, but decided to move on. (McNally is currently the Women’s Soccer Coach at Avila University). Van Leiden, Dear and McNally brought the OU soccer team back into contention. No longer was OU considered just another team in Area II of the NAIA; the scores show a vastly improved record against the power teams of the Midwest. Frank Lemp, another former OU soccer standout, took charge in the summer of 1980. His four-year stay kept OU teams in the thick of things. Defeating Benedictine twice, with a memorable overtime game in the 1981 District 10 Championship, several overtime games and a tie with Rockhurst. During Lemp’s tenure, they defeated Benedictine twice; one of those wins was in the 1981 District 10 Championship. They played a lot of overtime matches and had a tie against Midwest power Rockhurst. Avila was a huge match during the Lemp years and there were many great matches between these two sides. This fouryear run put together by Lemp, again put OU soccer back as one of the best in Area II of the NAIA. Lemp continues to teach at OU. The 1984 season brought a new coach, Jeff Wolfe. During his tenure, Wolfe compiled a 15-19-1 record. Memorable games include a 1-1 draw against John Brown University and two heartbreaking losses; one to Rockhurst and one to Benedictine in District play. Wolfe will be remembered for bringing the first High School Soccer All-American on campus. Mike Pearson and Steve Christian were both All District 10 players under Coach Wolfe. George Jaworski took over in 1986 and guided the side through the 1988 season. Jaworski was a standout soccer player for OU and compiled a 5-42-1 record during his stint as Head Coach. Coach Jaworski had the opportunity to coach three All Conference players; they included Greg Fields, Mike Pearson and Kevin Schorgel. George Jaworski is currently in business for himself. Dan Hogan took over in 1989 and guided the team through that season and also the 1990 season. Coach Hogan compiled a 2-31 record in two seasons as Head Coach. Highlights of Coach Hogan’s tenure include a 2-1 victory over Kansas Newman in 1989 and coaching three All Conference players and one All District player. All Conference players included: Mike Collins, Tim Collins and Sergio Guerrero. Tim Collins was an All District 10 second team selection. Frank Trovato took over in 1991. Coach Trovato guided the Braves for 3 seasons, compiling a 28-22-2 record during his stint as Head Coach. The 1993 season was a great season 2009 Ottawa University Soccer

Matt Walburg named to the OU All-Decade team (1980-1989) at goalkeeper. for the Braves, they went 12-5, which was the best record since the 1981 team, and the best record currently until the 2003 team went 164. Coach Trovato is currently the Director of Coaching for Alaska. Mike Cullina took over the program in 1994 and guided the Braves for 4 seasons. He compiled a record of 17-47-2, but did guide the 1997 side into the Conference playoffs for the 1st time. They were defeated by Friends 1-2. Coach Cullina is currently working for the Nebraska State Soccer Association. Tony Carbaugh took over for the 1998 and 1999 seasons. Coach Carbaugh came from a great DIII Program on the east coast (Messiah College). Coach Carbaugh compiled a record of 5-28-1 and is currently working as an engineer in Illinois. Matt Walberg, a former O.U. standout and Goalkeeper of the Decade took over the program in 2000. During his two-year stint as Head Coach, the Braves compiled a record of 3-31. Coach Walberg currently resides in Olathe, KS and works for the Olathe Soccer Club. Chip Wiggins took over the program in August of 2002. He inherited a program that had been neglected, but was unfazed as he started the rebuilding process. He was determined to bring O.U. soccer “Back to Where We Belong”. The 2002 season was a struggle, the Braves went 2-16-1, but the overhaul had begun and he was looking forward to the 2003 season. The 2003 season saw a huge increase in numbers (35), and the atmosphere of a real pro-

gram. The Braves finished 16-3-1 during the 2003 season, the best record since the 1971 team that advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. That team also qualified for the KCAC Playoffs for the first time since 1997 and won a Playoff game for the first time since the 1971 team.

Senior Andrew Moore was a second team All-KCAC selection and freshman Junior Ilbarra and Marvin Graham earned honorable mention All-KCAC honors. Goalkeeper Chris Munoz was the lone all-region selection. He earned honorable mention Region IV honors at goalkeeper.

The 2004 season started at home in the 1st annual Tony Van Leiden Classic. The opponent was nationally ranked Illinois-Springfield. This is the first time a nationally ranked opponent had visited Ottawa since the glory days of the late 60’s and early 70’s. Old rivalries were renewed with Benedictine and Baker. The Braves beat the U. of St. Mary for the first time. The Braves finished the regular season 9-9 and 6-3 in the KCAC. With the playoffs was a renewed focus and commitment to win the tournament championship. Tough matches with McPherson and at Bethany set the stage for a rematch with Friends in Wichita for the championship. The Braves beat Friends 4-0 to capture their first KCAC Tournament Championship and first bid to the Region IV tournament in school history. The first opponent at Regional’s was Park University, a school that Ottawa has a long history with, dating back to the start of the soccer program. The Braves came up short, losing 2-1. This was the 7th 2-1 loss for the Braves on the season. The Braves finished the season 12-10.

The OU men’s soccer team more than doubled its win total from the 2007 season and qualified for the KCAC Tournament for the first time since the 2005 season during the 2008 season. Ottawa finished with an overall record of 9-9-1 and a KCAC record of 6-3. OU finished third in the KCAC after being voted to finish in the bottom half by the conference coaches. Ottawa had five players earn All-KCAC honors, Colin Wylie was a first team selection, Chris Munoz earned second team and Marvin Graham, Philip Nguyen and Brian McAlister all earned honorable mention honors.

The 2005 season brought along another new coach for the men’s soccer program, Glen Cahill. Cahill was the former boy’s soccer coach at Ottawa High School. The men finished second in the KCAC with an overall record of 9-8-1 and a KCAC record of 6-2-1. Tyson John and Brett Parker were selected first team All-KCAC, first team All-Region IV and were OU’s first All-American selections since 1971 when Mirko Grgas earned the honor. John a forward and Parker a defender both received Honorable Mention All-American honors. Andy Martinus, Jonathon Woolley and Justin Berbena were selected second team AllKCAC. Daniel Gray was an honorable mention All-KCAC selection.

Brett Parker was named first team All-KCAC as a defender during his senior season (2005). He earned first team Region IV and was OU’s first NAIA All-American in men’s soccer in 34 years when he earned honorable mention honors in 2005. The last men’s soccer player to earn NAIA All-American was Mirk Grgas in 1971.

The 2006 season saw the men falter with a 2-12-2 overall record and a 1-7-1 KCAC record. Gordon Temple, Jacob Eaton and Jarod Sigmund were honorable mention All-KCAC selections. 2007 brought in the Bob Casper era for OU. The Braves played in many close matches, including three in a row at home that were all decided in overtime. Ottawa finished the season with an overall record of 4-11-2 and a KCAC record of 2-6-1 with the Braves finishing in eighth place in the KCAC. OU had three players earn All-KCAC honors and one player earn honorable mention Region-IV honors.

The present legal entity comes from a reorganization of the conference when the predecessor Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference formally disbanded on December 1, 1928 and a new conference was formed called the Kansas College Athletic Conference. The members were Baker, Bethany, KS Wesleyan, McPherson, Ottawa, and St. Mary’s colleges. At that time sportswriters quickly gave the KCAC league a nickname: the “Little Six,” in contrast to the Big 6 (which became the Big 8, now the Big 12) which also was organized in 1928. St. Mary’s College was discontinued in 1931. The College of Emporia returned to the fold in 1933, and Bethel was readmitted in 1939. Friends, a former member of the KIAC, was admitted in 1953. lege were admitted to make twelve members in the conference, and the conference was organized into Northern and Southern divisions until 1970 – when Baker, College of Emporia, and Ottawa withdrew to join two separate Missouri-based conferences. In the mid-1970s the formal name was changed again to Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. In 1975 women’s intercollegiate athletics were incorporated into programs of the KCAC. Ottawa was readmitted in 1981, bringing the conference membership to 10. In 1992 St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City left the conference and eventually closed. In 1999 University of Saint Mary-Leavenworth joined to bring the KCAC membership to ten. Today the KCAC sponsors conference intercollegiate athletics in football, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor/outdoor track and field, baseball, softball, golf, and men’s and women’s tennis.
