Johnson City Senior Center Foundation - Who Are We? The Johnson City Senior Center Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization administered by a group of volunteers appointed by the Commissioners of Johnson City. The Foundation raises dollars to help support the center’s Community Health and Activity Coordinator, Jeanne Clarke, RN; fellowship program for low income seniors, day trip support; Senior Chorale through an Arts Grant match; and Christmas boxes for low income seniors. The Foundation’s major fundraising efforts include: Pickleball Tournament (October 25 & 26, 2019); Kroger Rewards program; donations from our senior center members and Christmas box donations. WEATHER ALERT Inclement Weather Policy: If Johnson City Schools are closed for bad weather, the center will open at 10:00am and all instructor led programs cancelled and the center will close at 5:00pm. If the Johnson City Schools are on a 2 hour delay for bad weather, the center will open at 10:00am and programs will occur as normal and the center will close at normal hours.

Hiking 101* Persimmon Ridge Trail, Jonesborough (Ages 50+) Cost: $1.00 Tuesday, April 2, 9:30a The trail consists of a 2.4 mile loop that crosses several ridge lines and includes views of Little Limestone Creek. Great hike to start the hiking season. The trail is rated as Easy with some elevation gain. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling if needed; returning to MPCC by 1:00p.
Hip Hikers* Bay’s Mountain Fire Trail (Ages 50+) Cost: $2.00 Thursday, April 4, 7:30a
Trail loops around the Kingsport Reservoir and ascends to the Old Fire Tower. Beautiful views of surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains and the Kingsport area. The trail is a 4.7 mile loop with an elevation gain of 797 feet. It is rated as an Intermediate trail. Bring a snack or light lunch and plenty of water. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling; returning to MPCC by 2:00p.

Laurel River Trail, Hot Springs, NC (Ages 50+) Cost: Free Thursday, April 11, 7:30a
This is a very nice hike along the Big Laurel River. The trail is flat with quite a few rapids to view. The area is known for beaver activity, and you will pass through the ruins of the old town of Runion. The trail is out and back and is 7.0 miles long. The trail is rated as Easy. Bring a snack or light lunch and plenty of water. Carpooling from MPCC and returning by 2:00p.

The lunch cruise includes a wonderful buffet, 1.5 hour cruise and either a narration from the Captain or Entertainment from one of our local entertainers. More than 160 crafters and merchants line the streets and fill the parking lots of the festival area, some of which demonstrate arts like wheel-thrown pottery, crocheting and woodworking. It’s time to start planning for 2020! You are invited to attend the monthly meeting of JCSC Seniors on the Go to give your input and ideas for charter trips as well as day outings. The travel group meets on Thursday, April 11 at 3:00 pm at Memorial Park Community Center. We are still accepting reservations for the 2019 motor coach trips. If you plan to travel to Mackinac Island, Nova Scotia, or Amelia Island/Jacksonville, please sign up now! The Cape Cod trip is full, but we are accepting names on the waiting list.

Pound (Ages 18+) Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5p Cost: $3 Instructor: Dezaraye Campbell Become the music in this 45-minute full body workout that combines cardio, conditioning, and strength training with yoga and Pilates inspired movements. Participants will use pstix, lightly weighted drumsticks engineered specifically for
exercising. Pound transforms drumming into an incredibly effective way of working out. Cardio Drumming (Ages 18+) Wednesdays, 5p Cost: Free Instructor: Dezaraye Campbell A 45-minute fully body cardio workout open to all ages. Participants engage in high energy routines using drumsticks to hit on a exercise ball which sits on top of a 18 gallon bucket with rope handles. Participants must bring bucket and exercise ball to class. Drumsticks will be provided. FUNdamentals of Yoga (Ages 18+) Wednesdays, 6p Cost: $5 Instructor: Carrie Maggard Learn proper alignment, poses, breathing and more all while having FUN! This is a safe environment to empower, educate and inspire you to live healthier and happier lives. Designed with beginners and older adults in mind but all are welcome to enjoy this restorative practice. High Performance (Ages 18+) Fridays, 8:30-9:30a Cost: $2 Instructor: Lauren Qualls This circuit style class is a high volume (reps), low resistance (weight) workout with short rest intervals and is geared primarily at improving muscle tone and definition, while improving cardiovascular fitness. Keep It Moving A supervised exercise program for individuals who have finished Cardiac Rehab, Physical Therapy or been told by your physician that you need to exercise but don’t know how. This program serves as the next step in your progression in establishing a safe, independent exercise program. This program requires a referral from a medical professional. This is an ideal program for the individual who is facing total joint replacement both before surgery and after finishing post-surgical physical therapy. Brain-a-Cise (Ages 50+) Thursdays 3:30p Cost: Free Your brain needs exercise just as much as your body. Join us as we form a trivia team to compete in this year’s Senior Brain Games! Plogging Fitness Challenge (All Ages) April 15- June 7 Cost: $8 Plogging is a mash-up term of jogging and the Swedish “plocka upp,” meaning pick up. In this case, litter. Challenge participants will work together for eight weeks to beautify Johnson City. The challenge is simple: walk or run and pick up litter. Each week you’ll post a picture of your activity to our Facebook to show how much fun you’re having. There is no distance or time goal for this program. We want to challenge you to get out, get moving, and start plogging! Each week we will have a group plog at one of our city parks. Group plogs are not mandatory, but a fun addition to your plogging regime. Challenge participants will receive a box of nitrile gloves upon registration, and a t-shirt at the end of the challenge. Participants who upload pictures each week will be awarded specialty mugs!
