Almost 250 million people or about 40 percent of adult population in Europe, USA and Japan are estimated to suffer from some form of loss of natural teeth. Incidence of tooth loss generally increases with age. While the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research reports prevalence of both or partial and total tooth loss in seniors decreased from the early 1970s, seniors of 65 have lost an average of 13 teeth (including wisdom teeth) and 26% of seniors have no remaining teeth. Whether caring for natural teeth or dentures, seniors face a range of special oral concerns, including root decay and periodontal disease. You can keep your smile healthy by following a routine of proper oral care and making regular visits to your registered dental hygienist and dentist. Among other benefits, daily brushing and flossing protect older smiles from two problems of getting older. Root decay- a condition that affects older adults if a great amount of root surfaces are exposed. Tooth decay caused by the weakening or chipping of older fillings. Information is from American Dental Hygienist Association and www.astratechdental.com and http://www.nih.gov/ DataStatistics

Warm Up to Work Out

Your warm-up should consist of two phases: • Progressive aerobic activity that utilizes the muscles that you will be using during your workout • Flexibility exercises Choosing which warm-up activity to use is as easy as slowing down what you will be doing during your workout. For example, if you will be running, warm up with a slow jog, or if you will be cycling outdoors, begin in lower gears. An ideal intensity for an aerobic warm-up has yet to be established, but a basic guideline is to work at a level that produces a small amount of perspiration but doesn’t leave you feeling fatigued. The duration of the warm-up activity will depend on the intensity of your workout as well as your own fitness level. After the aerobic warm-up activity, you should incorporate flexibility/stretching exercises. Stretching muscles after warming them up with low-intensity aerobic activity will produce a better stretch, since the rise in muscle temperature and circulation increases muscle elasticity, making muscles more pliable. Be sure to choose flexibility exercises that stretch the primary muscles you will be using during your workout. Make the Time To fully reap the benefits of the time you are spending exercising, you must warm up. Taking those extra few minutes to adjust to increased activity will ensure a better performance from your body and, in turn, will make your workout more efficient, productive and, best of all, enjoyable.

Dominion Senior Living of Johnson City Nearly 3 years ago, she was able to travel and hold a conversation, and now she struggles to eat, remember, and do basic tasks. Alzheimer’s is not for the weak and we all must have patience. I, Mary Olson, have had many struggles since my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She has been living at Dominion Senior Living, and I am forever blessed to have them. My children are young and have had a hard time understanding why the sweetest, loving grandmother they know says things that she shouldn’t say. How do you explain Alzheimer’s to children? I put pen to paper and wrote it down. Little did I know that it would turn in to a children’s book available today. Dominion Senior Living of Johnson City has allowed me to hold book signings, supported me in every way, and continues to care for my mother. I’m forever thankful for them and appreciate their support through all of this. -Mary Edwards Olson
