THE SMELL OF
SUCCESS Culinary Arts graduate Margaret Karizda takes flight with new career
In 2012, Margaret Karizda completed the Culinary Apprenticeship Certificate program at KSU’s College of Continuing and Professional Education. Now, she is a full-time caterer and entrepreneur. Karizda spent 15 years in corporate sales with Delta Airlines but said cooking is her true passion. After she retired, she came to the College of Continuing and Professional Education. “This was automatic. I wanted to just stop and do what I passionately loved, which was cooking,” she said. “I loved my job with Delta, but when I’m cooking I don’t feel like I’m working.” The registration cost and opportunities to apprentice in different restaurants appealed to Karizda. Once she was enrolled in the program, Karizda joined eight other future chefs for what she said was an enjoyable experience. “It was hands-on work. You learn more because you are dealing with different seasoned chefs in the industry,” she said. Villa Christina, Park 75 and Elevation Chophouse are among her apprenticeship sites. She said, “Every day you learn something new. Overall, it was a positive experience.” Her fellow classmates were from all walks of life, and the diversity of the group added to her experience. Karizda was the only retiree. She said, “We had older adults and new high school graduates, and we all supported each other.” Pam Moss, Culinary program manager, said she isn’t surprised about Karizda’s success: “Margaret was such a hard-working student. Her enthusiasm for cooking was evident, and I know her restaurant will be a success.” Today, Karizda operates Helen Michaels, a catering company based out of Powder Springs. Soon she will meet her goal of opening her very own restaurant. For those interested in a culinary career, Karizda offers the following advice. “In culinary, you really have to love it. You have to have a passion for it. It’s a lot of work. If you don’t love it, you will give up,” she said. “For me, it’s exciting!”

The New World For the 150th anniversary of the Atlanta Campaign and the Battle of Atlanta, this class will examine the events leading to the inevitable explosion of the Civil War. In the mid 18th Century, a small group of Christian Evangelicals in England gave birth of a social movement known as Abolition. They set in motion a chain reaction of events ultimately leading to the American Revolution. The 1772 slavery case of James Somerset, instigated by the British abolitionists, galvanized the British colonists to declare independence, even though the colonists had little in common with each other and were reluctant to form even a temporary bond. Indeed, it was a marriage of convenience that had little chance of success. As James Madison put it, the United States was an entirely new form of government; it was not a federation or a confederation; it was both, neither married nor unmarried. This set a stage for severe conflict leading to the Civil War. This class is not about battles or heroes in battle; it is about the conflict that began in the 18th Century and continues on today. $99, 12 Hours S. Women and Money Through divorce, death of a spouse, or choice, more women are more likely to be living on their own. This means women are more likely to assume sole responsibility for making their own financial decisions than ever before. Women live an average of 4.9 years longer than men. This fact alone shows that women face several financial challenges including: • A decrease in income due to the loss of a spouse. • The need for women to stretch their retirement savings over a longer period of time. • Increasing health-care costs related to chronic health conditions due to aging, including the increasing costs for medications taken over a longer period of time. • The fact that women are likely to provide some long-term care for a spouse or loved one, yet women are more apt to face their own need for longterm care alone. • The fact that women who outlive their spouses will probably bear the ultimate responsibility for the disposition of their marital estate.
Women today have never been in a better position to achieve financial security for themselves and their families. Yet seizing the opportunity for long-term financial success requires awareness of potential issues and careful planning. $49, 2.5 Hours T.
