DIRECTOR’S NOTES Dick Harp, Director On January 10, I attended a meeting in Pensacola, Fla. Rather than drive straight home, I decided to dine in fine-cuisine style at a Cracker Barrel before getting on the road. I was seated at a table next to two men, and noticed each man was wearing a cap. One of the caps read “Vietnam Veteran.” Remarkably, the other man wore a cap which said “WWII Veteran.” I went over to their table, introduced myself, and thanked them for their service to our country. They invited me to join them which resulted in one of the most interesting conversations of my life. They both were Prisoners of War, wounded in battle and honored with various medals. Also, they both lost their wives many years ago. Their big time out on the town was their Saturday lunches at the Cracker Barrel. Our conversation lasted more than two hours. They seemed to be getting tired, and I knew it was time to leave when they said they normally took a nap about that time of day. I told them I would be honored if they would allow me to buy their lunch. They thanked me, pulled out their walkers, and I escorted them out the door. All of this was especially poignant as I had just finished

reading “Unbroken” the night before. (If you have not read this book and are a WWII history buff as I am, you might enjoy reading it.) I felt good about myself as I approached the cashier to pay the bill. I told her it was a great thrill for me to have had a chance to meet and talk with these two men. She verified they were who they said they were – real heroes. They had been coming to the Cracker Barrel for more than four years. All of the employees knew and loved them. I told her I was going to try to find new hats for them as their caps looked old and worn. The cashier smiled and told me those caps were very valuable even though they were falling apart. I asked her to explain her statement. She said she could not remember when, or if, they ever had to pay for their own lunch because they were wearing the caps. The respect people gave them was endless. I still would strongly recommend that we honor our veterans in any manner possible. I will be in Pensacola in another three weeks and look forward to having lunch again with my two new friends. Hope to see you in class soon.

OLLI Awarded Top Program Honors

The Association for Continuing Higher Education (ACHE) has selected our Osher Lifelong Learning Institute as the best in the country. At ACHE’s annual conference and awards banquet in Las Vegas, we were crowned the top Older Adult Model Program Award. The award recognizes an ACHE member for a program or activity that provides outstanding learning opportunities and/or service to an older adult population. Specifically, it recognized our OLLI Scholar Computer Certificate program. “We are thrilled to be honored by ACHE for this achievement,” said Michelle Girage, assistant dean. “This award is shared by our entire OLLI staff that works tirelessly to provide a valuable program that has become a pillar in the community.” Out of 118 OLLI programs throughout the nation, we are the only one to offer an OLLI Scholar Computer Certificate Program. The program was created and developed by instructor Lynne Mock in 2000 and boasts more than 200 graduates. “Research results showed older adults were not getting all the computer skills they needed out of other related classes,” said Meg

Webber, OLLI program manager. “This program was implemented to provide students with a more comprehensive skill set while learning in a safe and comfortable class setting.”

HISTORY Civil War in the Western Theater

The Labyrinth – A Walking Meditation

The labyrinth, known to be at least 4,000 years old, has been used by many cultures, countries, and faiths around the world. It is a walking meditation on a spiral path leading to a central point, and then back out again. Like the spiral found in nature, such as the conch shell, the pine cone, or the rose blossom, the labyrinth is also a curving line around a central point, symbolizing movement, growth, change, and providing a continually shifting perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. Walking a labyrinth is a metaphor for life - the path shifts in unexpected ways, sometimes away from your goal, but ultimately leading to the center. It is a powerful meditation tool, helping to quiet the mind and allowing time for personal reflection. Learn about the labyrinth, walk a large canvas labyrinth, and center yourself in quietness and reflection in this class hosted by a Veriditas Labyrinth Facilitator. Extended labyrinth walk, meditation and journal writing time from 3:00 – 5:00PM. $49, 2 Hours A. Beam, Veriditas Labyrinth Facilitator 4/23/2015 1 Session, Th, 1:00 to 3:00 PM Course #154SHRC1202A

From the 1862 capture of Forts Henry and Donelson, to 1864’s March to the Sea, many pivotal campaigns and battles during the American Civil War took place in the Western Theater. This area of operations consisted of all the geographic territory west of the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River. During the course, we will explore military action at Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Atlanta and many other battles! Students will also learn about the commanding officers involved in an area, which most historians agree decided the outcome of the war. Suggested, but not required, reading, The Civil War in the West: Victory and Defeat from the Appalachians to the Mississippi, by Earl J. Hess. $129, 16 Hours M.
