DIRECTOR’S NOTES Dick Harp, Director I would like to appeal to all our members for your help and suggestions in remedying a frustrating problem. We are proud of our OLLI program and what it has accomplished since its inception 16 years ago. We have enjoyed membership growth along with expansion of our class offerings, classroom space and Club Room area. We were honored and proud to receive national recognition as the “Best in the Country” for our OLLI program by the Association of Continuing Higher Education, which we reported in our last newsletter. We appreciate all of the good things that have happened to our program but we still have a lingering problem. On occasion, we are asked to speak to civic groups, church groups, and various clubs about our OLLI here at KSU. One of the first questions we ask when we meet with these groups is, “How many of you know what OLLI is?” We might get a few hands raised, but the rest of the people are not aware of the program. They don’t have any idea what OLLI is and what it might

offer that could or would be of interest to them. Our main goal since the inception of our program is to help make a difference in the lives of people over the age of 50. Thousands of individuals have participated in our programs over the years, and I would like to believe we have done a decent job of helping to improve many lives in various degrees. If this assumption is correct, you can understand our frustration when we learn that many people still do not know about us. We would welcome your ideas and suggestions that would help us reach individuals that do not know about OLLI here at KSU. We will be happy to speak to any group that would like to know more about OLLI. If you know of any organization that might be interested in having us speak, contact Meg Webber at 470-578-3508 or email me at dharp@ kennesaw.edu. Help us reach those that don’t know about us and might enjoy participating in our program. Hope to see you in class soon.

OUTSTANDING Adult Educator We are so proud of Nancy DeLisleBrown, MA, our OLLI Spanish instructor, who was recently named the 2015 Outstanding Adult Educator by the Georgia Adult Education Association. Nancy received her award during the GAEA annual conference on March 9 in Augusta. “This award comes as a wonderful honor for me,” Nancy said. “I feel so blessed to be a part of the College of Continuing and Professional Education

and to have a role in making a difference in the lives of our students. I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude to the faculty and staff, to my colleagues, the students, and to everyone who made this award possible. Thank you to all for this high honor and for the tremendous joy it has given me as an educator!” Nancy first joined OLLI in 2007. She also teaches English as a Second Language and has worked with our Korean teacher trainees. No matter what

she’s teaching, her students really do love learning from her. “Nancy is a fantastic Spanish teacher for our OLLI students,” said Meg Webber, program manager. “Many of our students return to her Spanish courses over and over because they learn so much working with her. She loves what she does and it shows. She makes learning a new language fun.”

The Labyrinth A Walking Meditation

The labyrinth, known to be at least 4,000 years old, has been used by many cultures, countries, and faiths around the world. It is a walking meditation on a spiral path leading to a central point, and then back out again. Like the spiral found in nature, such as the conch shell, the pine cone, or the rose blossom, the labyrinth is also a curving line around a central point, symbolizing movement, growth, change, and providing a continually shifting

12

perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. Walking a labyrinth is a metaphor for life the path shifts in unexpected ways, sometimes away from your goal, but ultimately leading to the center. HISTORY Spirits of The Great American West

This class is a very unique look at American History westward from the Mississippi River to California. Major historical events are chronologically tied together with personal accounts, legends and myths. Little known and rarely addressed events and characters are woven together in a classroom lecture & group discussion environment using source documents and hard copy maps. Some historical questions are addressed, but are left as “histories mysteries” since there are no complete explanations that resolve them. Facts are woven together with legends and common sense to make history come alive as you have never experienced it. This class is frequently repeated by students who find each session equally as informative as the preceding one. Students find that Quentin, who is a recognized historian, author, and cowboy poet entertaining, informative, and enlightening.
