DIRECTOR’S NOTES Dick Harp, Director I have been reading about people who are experiencing various stages of dementia. My interest in this matter grew when a good friend of mine moved into a facility that specializes in the treatment of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. I visit him often and it’s hard to believe and accept the changes in him over the past few years. He was one of the brightest individuals I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. My visits have included discussions with his family and several doctors and psychologists that work at the facility. There is presently no cure for this disease. There is a great deal of research being conducted by scientists and pharmaceutical companies hoping to find a cure. However, there are theories about prevention or possible postponement of this disease. Not all of the doctors and psychologists agree on this but most feel that stimulating the brain can be very beneficial. I have always believed in and used the phrase, “Use it or lose it,” pertaining
to using your mind and actively stimulating your brain. We used this phrase in the early years of our OLLI experience here at KSU. Back then I remember reading some quotations from Dr. Amir Soas who, at the time, was at Case Western Reserve University Medical School in Cleveland. Dr. Soas said the most important thing to do was to “Read, read, read.” He also suggested doing crossword puzzles, pulling out the chessboard or scrabble board, learning a foreign language or a new hobby – anything to stimulate the brain. Other suggestions were made by researchers such as cutting back on television. When you watch TV, your brain goes into neutral. I am not claiming that participating in our OLLI program will prevent dementia. However, I am convinced that keeping your brain active certainly can’t hurt. Our OLLI programs offer opportunities for members to stay stimulated, make new friendships and enjoy learning new things – whatever they might be. Hope to see you in class soon.

OLLI Scholar Grad Gains
CONFIDENCE in Personal and Business Endeavors When Fran Weigard applied for an OLLI scholarship she had only planned on registering for the Microsoft Word class as a refresher course. However, after speaking with OLLI program manager Margaret Webber, she decided to enroll in the OLLI Scholar Computer Certificate program. The program is comprised of five foundational courses. Students who complete all five classes within a year are crowned an OLLI Scholar. “I’m so glad I did this,” Weigard said. “I went from learning as I go, with just enough knowledge to get by, to having a proficiency and a confidence in each of the areas we studied.” Weigard says she now has a better understanding of her computer, the Internet, email, Windows 8, Microsoft Word and how to safeguard her computer. “I have so much more of a depth of knowledge and a confidence in knowing what I need to know both for everyday life and in my career,” she
said. “I am also much more efficient and productive, and I no longer fear clicking on the wrong thing and getting a virus. The instructors were so knowledgeable and they made learning fun, simple and applicable.” The skills Weigard gained have been applied to her business. Her nutraceutical company helps people get healthy while teaching and training them to start their own businesses. Additionally, since completing her certificate, she has been interviewing for a position in advertising sales. Weigard aspires to land a position to help companies tell their story in an affordable way and to grow their business. “I feel these courses have greatly helped increase my skill level and made me more valuable as an employee and more effective as a business owner,” she said. Now brimming with confidence from all the new skills she’s developed, Weigard is considering writing the book
she has been pondering for years. “In the past 20+ years in healthcare, I have witnessed many miracles and have seen God work in incredible ways,” she said. “I would like to tell the story of what I have seen and what others have shared with me.” One phone call. A life changed. Weigard has recognized that and is truly grateful for everything she has learned. “I have felt more confident, capable, efficient and knowledgeable in both my business and professional life,” she said. “My communication, customer service and relationship building has improved because of the things I have learned in the OLLI computer courses.”
Computer Scholar Program Names New Instructor Doug Vanderbilt has been named the new instructor for OLLI’s Scholar Computer certificate program. The program began in 2000 and has seen more than 200 graduates. Out of 118 OLLI programs throughout the country, ours is the only one to offer a Computer Scholar certificate program. “Research results showed older adults were not getting all the computer skills they needed out of other related classes,” said Margaret Webber, OLLI program manager. “We’re excited to have Doug teach this program which will provide
4
students a more comprehensive skill set while learning in a safe and comfortable class setting.” Vanderbilt earned a bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering and has been teaching since 1996. For nearly two decades he has served as an instructor for the College of Continuing and Professional Education teaching various programs including Microsoft Office and Basic Office Technology classes. “I love teaching, and I love training,” Vanderbilt said. “Just because you can’t do something right now doesn’t mean
you can’t learn how to do it. Computers are not going away. That’s how we communicate. You can learn it. We’ll empower you with those tools.”
