OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE pg. 10 The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offers an impressive selection of educational and social opportunities for adults age 50 and older. With a purpose to promote lifelong learning and continued intellectual and personal growth for retirement age individuals, OLLI has become the place for fun, interactive learning in a safe and encouraging environment.
Curriculum draws from the interests, talents, and experiences of older adult learners. Academic courses are college level (without the homework, term papers, and tests), and cover everything from personal computers to fitness for life and visual arts. Social activities include various gatherings for dinner, laughter, entertainment and travel.

ARTS Oil Painting - Beginning to Intermediate
$179 Herb Lambert | Sat 9AM - 12PM 08/07/2021 - 09/25/2021 The focus of this class is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to draw and paint a variety of subject matter from still life to portraits. Students will learn oil painting concepts and techniques that are relevant to every painting: composition, value, color, edges, light key, brush strokes, paint quality, shapes, massing, light/shadows, etc. Demonstrations and critiques will be presented, however each student will be mentored and taught at their current level of experience.

Ernest Varner | Tue 9AM - 12PM 08/10/2021 - 09/28/2021 Professional artist and instructor Ernest Varner says, “If you can sign your name and I can read it, you can learn to draw and paint portraits and figures. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s have some fun!” Mr. Varner has studied with many of today’s portrait masters and uses his experience to enhance each student’s quest for personal expression. For beginning through intermediate skill levels, this class is designed to take the mystery out of painting portraits and figures. Whether you prefer classical realism or impressionism, you will concentrate on capturing a likeness in fresh vibrant flesh tones in oils or pastels while working from photos or live subjects. Particular attention will be given to understanding light and shadow, and how to model light and shadow using expressive drawing, value, color, edges, and brushwork techniques to create the illusion of form.

During the Constitutional Convention of 1787 there was much discussion about the selection and power of the office. Since the ratification of the Constitution each president has personalized the office to his style and the nations needs. There have been dynamic presidents, accidental presidents and during the Gilded Age they were called the “Forgotten presidents.” This class will cover the establishment of the office and review the dynamics of the office and the interesting personalities that have occupied it.

The Civil War in Georgia

$159 Nancy DeLisle-Brown | Mon 10AM - 12PM 07/12/2021 - 09/20/2021 Omit Date(s) 09/06/2021 This course covers elements from Chapters 5-8 of Spanish Is Fun, Lively Lessons for Beginners, Book 1. In Chapter 5 students will study numbers 0-30. The numbers will be practiced via selected areas of the textbook, in individual responses as well as group and partner activities. Students will then apply their knowledge of the numbers in Chapter 6 as they study how to tell time in Spanish. Following a brief review of –ar verbs from Spanish Is Fun - Part I, Chapter 7 will then expand the lesson into an introduction of regular –er verbs in the present tense. Students will also use a special “er” verb to express what one does versus what one wants to do. Chapter 8 will explore colors as well as adjectives and their opposites. Finally, students will use adjectives to ask about and express another’s personality or character. Each chapter will include a “Cultural Capsule” in which specific components of Spanish/Latino culture will be examined and discussed.

In Chapter 9 students will learn to identify the names of various professions as well as people in those professions. Chapter 10 will introduce students to the present tense of verbs ending in ir, and students will use one of these verbs to express going out, and leaving for versus leaving from. Chapter 11 will present students with the verb meaning “to be,” and students will study this verb in describing location and temporary conditions. The lesson will further extend into the application of the verb in expressing actions that are happening in real time. In Chapter 12 students will study how to express dates as well as the names of the months of the year. Students will then identify various celebrations and events that take place during specific months. Each chapter will include a “Cultural Capsule” in which specific components of Spanish/Latino culture will be examined and discussed.

2021 Tax Information and Planning Session

The information covered will be especially useful for students that have IRA’s, 401k’s and other retirement plans. Session one will focus on the NEW rules found under the SECURE ACT. The SECURE ACT created some of the biggest retirement plan rule changes we’ve seen in recent history. Learn strategies you may be able to use to reduce current and future taxes. Session two will focus on Potential Tax Law Changes Proposed by the new Biden Administration. This session will also cover taxreducing strategies for IRA’s and 401k’s.
