WEB DESIGN CERTIFICATE In this intensive nine-month program, there are four modules:

Module 1 Discovery

This module will expose the students to design principles, usability, the Web development process, and file basics. This module lays the foundation for the entire course.

Module 2 Design

The student is expected in this module to begin to apply the design principles learned in Module 1 to Web page layout. This is accomplished through a demonstrated ability to code in HTML and CSS.

Module 3 Development

Though HTML and CSS provide the foundation for much of the Web, modern websites interactively engage visitors. In this module, the student uses JavaScript and Flash to provide such interactivity.

Module 4 Deployment

Design can capture visitors’ attention, but the Web currently hosts millions of sites. Thus, successful Web designers must also be adept with industry tools and practices such as search engine optimization and Web analytics to drive traffic to their sites.

Prerequisites: Complete Skills Assessment and submit Program Application. Working knowledge of computers, especially Windows, and access to computer and Internet are required. Must have access to Adobe® Creative Suite® 6 Design & Web Premium for homework.

PARALEGAL

SUCCESS IS NOW IN SESSION

Tammie Gruhn comes full circle with Paralegal program

When it comes to courts and the legal system, Tammie Gruhn is a seasoned professional. After earning her paralegal certificate in 2009, she has excelled in the courtroom and the community.

“Working in a law office is an adventure every day. I don’t know what type of case I’ll be working on next, and that’s exciting for me,” she said. “It’s a constant learning experience.”

After being laid off in 2007, Gruhn picked up a Workforce Investment Act pamphlet she found at the Department of Labor office in Kennesaw. “I thought, ‘Maybe I need to change careers,’” she recalled.

Gruhn continued her thirst for legal knowledge by becoming a licensed private investigator and a state-certified process server. She stresses the importance of ongoing education.

Gruhn had always been interested in the legal field and said her education at KSU prepared her for the rigors of the profession. Her experience at different law firms, as an intern and full-time employee, has exposed Gruhn to a variety of cases.

“When you get in the field, don’t stop at your paralegal certificate,” she said. “I take between 50 and 75 hours of continuing legal education (courses) each year because our laws change. You’ve got to change with it.”

Her involvement with the Cobb County Legal Professionals Association is another way Gruhn sets an example for others. She’s been recognized as Member of the Year and has served as president. She said organizations such as CCLPA are great resources that should be utilized by newcomers to the paralegal field. Interning is another way to make an impression and get some real-world experience, she said. In April, Gruhn returned to KSU as an instructor for Law Office Management. She wants to inspire her students beyond the classroom. Jennifer Henderson, Paralegal program manager, said the value of Gruhn’s professional accomplishments and experience in the program will be phenomenal for students. “Tammie adds so much strength to our program,” Henderson said. “Her knowledge of the law is impressive, but her passion for education, coupled with her leadership skills, will be a lifelong benefit to our students.” “I love my job and the legal field,” Gruhn said. “Coming to school here has started a wonderful journey for me. I’m excited to see what the next level will be.”

Women and Money

• The need for women to stretch their retirement savings over a longer period of time. • Increasing health-care costs related to chronic health conditions due to aging, including the increasing costs for medications taken over a longer period of time. • The fact that women are likely to provide some long-term care for a spouse or loved one, yet women are more apt to face their own need for longterm care alone. • The fact that women who outlive their spouses will probably bear the ultimate responsibility for the disposition of their marital estate. Women today have never been in a better position to achieve financial security for themselves and their families. Yet seizing the opportunity for long-term financial success requires awareness of potential issues and careful planning. $49, 2.5 Hours, T. Sanders, Certified Estate Planner, Instructor 9/24/2014 1 Session(s), W 9:30AM to 12:00PM Course# 151SPGF3602A

Through divorce, death of a spouse, or choice, more women are more likely to be living on their own. This means women are more likely to assume sole responsibility for making their own financial decisions than ever before. Women live an average of 4.9 years longer than men. This fact alone shows that women face several financial challenges including: • A decrease in income due to the loss of a spouse.
