IN THIS ISSUE

Motivated to Succeed Change – whether it’s pennies and dimes or a new job – what’s your take on it? I’m a glass half-full type of person. Give me a few loose coins, and soon I’ll have a dollar. New jobs equal new opportunities and chances for growth. What about you? Sharon Lorenz, featured on page 25, knows all about change – and she truly embraces it. After working as a flight attendant, she transitioned into the healthcare industry. With some encouragement from family, she completed three certificate programs, all within the span of one year. Now, she has her eyes set on a fourth! Don’t let changes in your life be discouraging. It might be unnerving or even intimidating, but not impossible. You can do it – and we can help you. As we ready for the changes that 2015 will bring, be confident that we are here for you. We are ready for the ride, and we hope you are, too. Let’s embrace it together so we can celebrate the successes to come. Sincerely,

Barbara S. Calhoun, Dean College of Continuing and Professional Education

K

ennesaw State University’s College of Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE) is honored to serve those who have served us. By providing VA Education Benefits on select courses, the college is in a unique position to aid those returning to the workforce. “Veterans can take advantage of our program to polish any training skills they may be lacking upon returning home to their families and re-entering the work field,” said Nora Felde, military liaison for CCPE. “We offer several certificate courses that ease the progression back into the workplace.” Active duty or honorably discharged members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and National Guard may qualify for benefits that would provide funding for nearly 30 professional certificate programs. Relevant courses include Culinary, Web Design, Project Management, Meeting & Event Management, Real Estate Property Management, Social Media Marketing and Paralegal among others.

“I love to cook and I wanted to learn the fundamentals of it,” said Robert Lewis, Air Force Veteran (2006-09). “Enrollment in the Culinary Apprenticeship Certificate program would have been impossible without military funding.”

TRIPLE THREAT Sharon Lorenz has healthy career in helping others

M

om knows best – just ask Sharon Lorenz, who has three healthcare professional certificates under her belt: EKG Technician, Phlebotomy Technician and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). She said, “It just fit for me. I was used to taking care of people.” CPR and first aid procedures were part of her 10-year career as a flight attendant. However, Lorenz was encouraged to tackle the healthcare industry when her mother and niece completed the Pharmacy Technician Professional Certificate program together. “My mom said, ‘Sharon, you really need to get into the medical field. It would be a great avenue for you.’” Lorenz enrolled in the EKG program on March 27, 2013, and took her first quiz on her 50th birthday. She admitted it was scary going back to school after 30 years, but Lorenz successfully completed the EKG program – and consecutively registered for and completed two other programs. She is now a state-certified CNA and a nationally certified EKG and Phlebotomy Technician. She said, “It opens the doors wider if you do a national certification. It shows extreme dedication to skills.”

She said having some of her instructors teach multiple programs offered a sense of comfort. “I think a lot of my success is because of being trained and taught so well,” she said.

Lorenz says a career in healthcare has so many opportunities for those who are interested. From homecare to hospitals to nursing homes – she said the possibilities are endless.

Lorenz was working as a mobile insurance examiner (taking vitals and drawing blood) during her time in the CNA program, which also included clinicals at Northside Hospital-Cherokee. As luck would have it, they were in need of a lab tech assistant, and Lorenz’s name came up as a possibility since she was a certified phlebotomy technician. Her first day on the job was May 19, and she said her classroom training helped tremendously.

“The jobs are so versatile, compared to any other job I’ve ever had,” she said. “You can really streamline it to fit your lifestyle instead of having to fit your lifestyle into it.”

“Every day is different, and now I’m doing a lot more challenging things,” she said. “Being a mobile insurance examiner – everybody is healthy. Now, being in the hospital, the table has been turned. But I love what I am doing.” Andrea Cochran, interim director for healthcare programs, said Lorenz’s dedication is something to be admired. “She was such a focused student, and to see her flourish in so many areas is incredible,” Cochran said.

Lorenz’s thirst for knowledge is still fresh, and she said the Medical Assisting Certificate program has piqued her interest because of the combination of administrative and clinical skills training. “I’ve come this far,” she said. “It would be nice to take it to the next level.”

PARALEGAL PROGRAM NOW ALL ENCOMPASSING

On-site Joe R. Edwards Law Library an added benefit to students

His son, John “Dick” Edwards, a Paralegal instructor at KSU since 2008, said, “I’d like to thank KSU for honoring my father. We [Edwards family] are profoundly touched. My father loved law and was extremely loyal to the clients he represented.”

K

ennesaw State University’s College of Continuing and Professional Education recently hosted a reception to officially unveil the Joe R. Edwards Law Library, adding another valuable resource to the longtime Paralegal Certificate program. Several members of the Edwards family along with Kennesaw City Councilman Tim Sebastian were on hand to celebrate the monumental event. To date, more than 3,000 books worth approximately $50,000 have been donated to the library. The law library serves as the site for KSU’s new daytime Paralegal classes and is an asset for students in Legal Research and Writing classes. Jennifer Henderson, Paralegal program manager, said, “For nearly 30 years, our program has trained thousands of students to

enter the legal field. The new addition of the law library adds an element of prestige that cements the quality of our program for the next 30 years and beyond.” “Our mission is to continually educate people,” said Barbara Calhoun, dean, College of Continuing and Professional Education. “The opening of this facility will serve as an enormous resource and demonstrates our level of commitment to our valued students.” The law library provides a welcomed convenience for both students and instructors. Its namesake, the late Joe R. Edwards, was affectionately known as “everyman’s attorney” in Atlanta. He defended blue-collar and less-fortunate clients – often pro bono.

Tammie Gruhn, a featured speaker at the event, earned her Paralegal Certificate in 2009 and has since added licensed private investigator and a state-certified process server to her résumé. She is one of the newest instructors in the Paralegal program and teaches Law Office Management. “I am beyond excited to be an instructor at KSU,” Gruhn said. “I want to share my passion with as many students as I can. This can be a very rewarding career, and I want to teach people to love it as much I do. To have the law library on the premises is wonderful.” Make the choice to invest in others by contributing to our annual Paralegal Scholarship fund. In doing so, you will assist students in reaching their professional goals. For more information on the Paralegal program, or to donate to scholarships, visit ksuparalegal.com, email paralegal@ kennesaw.edu, or call 770-423-6765.

OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE: AGES 50+ Women and Money Through divorce, death of a spouse, or choice, more women are more likely to be living on their own and assuming sole responsibility for making their own financial decisions than ever before. Women live an average of 4.9 years longer than men. This fact alone shows that women face several financial challenges including: • A decrease in income due to the loss of a spouse. • T he need for women to stretch their retirement savings over a longer period of time. • Increasing health-care costs related to chronic health conditions due to aging, including the increasing costs for medications taken over a longer period of time. • T he fact that women are likely to provide some long-term care for a spouse or loved one, yet women are more apt to face their own need for long-term care alone. • T he fact that women who outlive their spouses will probably bear the ultimate responsibility for the disposition of their marital estate.

Women today have never been in a better position to achieve financial security for themselves and their families. Yet seizing the opportunity for long-term financial success requires awareness of potential issues and careful planning. $49, 2.5 Hours, T.
