DIRECTOR’S NOTES Dick Harp, Director It’s hard to believe that May 23 is the date of our 50th OLLI social. I can’t help but reminisce about all the socials we have enjoyed and the wonderful people we have met over the years. We received the inspiration for these events in 1999 when we hosted 30 members of our program, then called Golden University. We asked them what they, as seniors, would like to receive from our program. Many of them mentioned they would like to take classes with fellow seniors as they were uncomfortable sitting in a class with younger people. The most important issue they brought up was a need to socialize with other seniors in a friendly environment on a regular basis. There were widows and widowers in this group and they were uncomfortable going out by themselves. At the end of the evening, then-KSU President Dr. Betty Siegel, Dean Barbara S. Calhoun, my wife, Patty, and I stood by the exit door and thanked everyone for coming. One woman was obviously waiting to be the last person to leave. As she approached us, I extended my hand and thanked her for coming. She said she wanted to thank us for giving her the first reason, since her husband passed away, to get dressed and leave her house. I told Dr. Siegel we would find donors and establish a program for seniors that would offer socials, including entertainment and a good meal, at a reasonable price. We also established our OLLI Club Room where our members enjoy various activities and make new friends. I have never believed in the theory of “build it and they will come.” The best approach is to ask people what they

want and then provide those desired programs. Credit has to be given to the aforementioned group for their many suggestions. We designed our offerings in accordance with their ideas which has resulted in a successful program comprised of classes and socials. Much credit has to be given to Dean Calhoun for her support and the wonderful people who have contributed to the implementation of our program. We had 478 enrollees in 1999 which included classes and socials. We added our Donuts & Notes event in 2001 and it has become an annual favorite. Our socials have grown from 30 to 225-250 people per event. Our class enrollments reached an all-time high of 1,000 for the fourth quarter of 2015. All of this is because we asked our members what they wanted and did our best to provide it. We are always open to suggestions as to how we might improve our OLLI. We might not be able to implement everything you suggest, but we are interested in your comments and feedback. Looking back on the many socials we’ve had brings back memories of fun times, good food and enjoyable entertainment – plus the memories of those brave enough to don costumes and add to the enjoyment of the evening. I personally treasure the many friends I have made over the years and the wonderful people I have met. We hope the socials have provided much pleasure for all our members. We will strive to continue these events. Hope to see you in class soon.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

Growing With

TECHNOLOGY

I

In today’s age, being knowledgeable

about computers is a key aspect in daily life. Having the basic skills down will only help with everyday tasks. Recent graduates of the OLLI Scholar program looked back at their experience in the program and their reasons for taking the class. With Aklilu Desalegn’s children growing, he wanted to grow his basic knowledge of technology in order to help them. “My kids are grown up now, so they need my help. I just wanted to have the basics, but I got a lot from this course,” he

said. Gaining more than basic computer skills, Aklilu was happy with his classroom experience and the knowledge he received. Aklilu, along with wanting to help his children, used the program as a precursor to AutoCAD. Walking away with much more than just the basics, Aklilu was grateful for the time he spent in the program. “I know something now, and I think something is better than nothing,” he said. While Aklilu used the program to help him further his career path, Rebecca Clark looked to just expand her knowledge of computers to help her in her daily life. She then found the OLLI Computer Scholar program. She was looking to update her knowledge about computers and be more involved with what her grandchildren were doing. Unsure about computers at first, Rebecca stepped away from the program with

confidence in her computer skills. “I found out that I don’t have to be afraid, and I won’t break it. I’m very happy that I took it!” Another recent OLLI Scholar graduate, Sally Greenstein, agreed that she had walked away from the program with much more than just basic computer skills. She walked away wanting to come back, not only for computers but also to take the astronomy class. Sally found it comforting “knowing that there were other silver foxes that needed to learn how to navigate the computer.”

Along with acquiring skills like using different fonts in their documents, Aklilu, Sally and Rebecca enjoyed learning how to perform practical tasks such as inserting photos online. On graduation day, Sally gave one last piece of advice to her fellow classmates: “When in doubt, right click.” See “OLLI SCHOLAR” on page 11 Muy Bueno: COMING SOON! OLLI Scholar Spanish Certificate. Facts are woven together with legends and common sense to make history come alive as you have never experienced it. This class is frequently repeated by students who find each session equally as informative as the preceding one. Students find that Quentin Thomas, a recognized historian, author and cowboy poet, is an entertaining, informative and enlightening instructor. $99, 12 Hours Q. M. The Labyrinth - A Walking Meditation

The labyrinth, known to be at least 4,000 years old, has been used by many cultures, countries, and faiths around the world. It is a walking meditation on a spiral path leading to a central point and then back out again. Like the spiral found in nature, such as the conch shell, the pine cone, or the rose blossom, the labyrinth is also a curving line around a central point symbolizing movement, growth, change, and providing a continually shifting perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. Walking a labyrinth is a metaphor for life - the path shifts in unexpected ways, sometimes away from your goal, but ultimately

leading to the center. It is a powerful meditation tool, helping to quiet the mind and allowing time for personal reflection. Learn about the labyrinth, walk a large canvas labyrinth, and center yourself in quietness and reflection in this class hosted by a Veriditas Labyrinth Facilitator. Extended labyrinth walk, meditation and journal writing time from 3-5:00PM. $49, 3 Hours A. Beam, Instructor 5/19/2016 1 Session(s), Th 1:00 to 4:00PM Course# 164SHRC1202A
