The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offers an impressive selection of educational and social opportunities for adults age 50 and older. With a purpose to promote lifelong learning and continued intellectual and personal growth for retirement-age individuals, OLLI has become the place for fun, interactive learning in a safe and encouraging environment. Our curriculum draws from the interests, talents and experiences of older adult learners. Academic courses are college level (without the homework, term papers and tests), and cover everything

from personal computers to fitness for life and visual arts. Social activities include various gatherings for dinner, laughter and entertainment. Every student that enrolls in our courses or programs becomes one of our OLLI members and will begin to receive our quarterly Newsletter. Our members become part of our unique OLLI family where learning is a continuous part of our culture. DIRECTOR’S NOTES Dick Harp, Director As you might recall, I have been passionately working to develop a program for single seniors within our OLLI. Several years ago, we tried to create such a program. Unfortunately, our efforts were unsuccessful at the time. However, this is a situation that is near and dear to my heart as I know firsthand of the tremendous need for such a program and how it can truly change lives. Are you aware of the fact that the percentage of older adults who live alone has risen from 6% in 1900 to nearly 30% today (Pew Research Center)? And, the likelihood of living alone increases with age as nearly 43% of seniors 65+ now live alone according to U.S. Census data. Many seniors living alone may start to feel social isolation and loneliness. That’s why this program is so vital. I know from talking to many of these individuals at all of our various functions that some can feel out of place attending these events by themselves. In my previous letter, I sent a call out to anyone who would be willing to step forward and take a leadership role in creating this program. I’m pleased to announce that we have three amazing ladies who have answered the bell and will serve as pioneers in getting the program up and

running. I would like to thank Carol Altgilbers, Susan Tike and Marilyn Fritz for sharing in this great vision and their willingness to launch this new endeavor. Our next step is hosting an organizational meet and greet meeting for any current members and interested individuals who would like to help or learn more about this project. Please join us at the OLLI Club Room inside KSU Center (3333 Busbee Drive, Kennesaw, 30144) on Thursday, January 18, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. This meeting will serve as the perfect opportunity to share ideas, establish goals, and build a program that we can all be proud of. From musicals to poetry, Josh Langston has done it all.

He has 10 novels in print and has helped numerous students develop fiction, memoirs, children’s books and technical manuals. In addition to a love of writing, he values the importance of sharing all the tricks he has learned. As an OLLI instructor, Josh will be teaching, “Learn Short Fiction from a Pro” and “Publish Your Own Book.” Both aimed to help students succeed as writers. He said, “I love helping other people achieve their writing and publishing dreams. There are so many stories to be told.” “Learn Short Fiction from a Pro” will cover the essentials of writing short commercial fiction. The market for this has evolved over the years as a result of the internet. To be considered for publication, submissions to editors are mostly done online, which is cheaper and faster but this means editors have more to look at. This course will help students maneuver this market and become better writers. In the course “Publish Your Own Book,” students will focus on the many facets of independent releases. Josh will discuss everything from proofing a manuscript for errors to designing covers. He will offer expertise on developing other subject material and alternative formats aside from the common forms of novels and memoirs. “The biggest kick I get is when a student shows me the fruit of their work,” he said. “That makes my heart sing.”

Make your paintings come alive with expressive color and line! In this follow up class to Watercolor with Pen and Ink, we will explore advanced techniques combining watercolor with pen and ink. Learn more about using these versatile mediums with Elizabeth Carr, a professional artist and signature member of The Georgia Watercolor Society and Watercolor Society of Alabama. A supply list will be emailed prior to class.

This class will provide the casual artist who has some skill with the pencil or pen, the opportunity to expand upon that skill and create interesting landscapes. We will work on a realistic depiction of a country scene, a city scene, a waterfront and more. We will work on effective landscape composition and techniques to accurately portray sky, clouds, hills, foliage, grass, water and more. Scenes chosen may include buildings, animals or structures which contribute to a pleasant landscape scene. Our medium will be pencil, but may include use of colored pencil or pen to enhance the final product.

Course fee includes all the materials you will need. Focus is on uppercase, lowercase and basic italic lettering using the broad pen. Instructor will provide some printed copies to use in class (or you can bring your own). We will discuss their style, techniques, composition and color palettes while painting one of their masterpieces. Instructor will demonstrate both a copy one week, then create a new painting from her sketches or photos the following class, using techniques learned from the master just studied. Students will then create their own studies and original paintings.

Fearless Rendering in Pen and Ink $119 01/16/2018 - 03/06/2018 8 Session(s) Tue 12:30PM - 3PM Instructor(s): Bill Needs Drawing with pen and ink is not for the faint at heart. This ageless medium provides an opportunity for artists to make crisp, detailed illustrations or to complement watercolor painting. This course offers the experienced pencil sketching artist the challenge of laying ink on top of a pencil line. Learn how and when to hatch, cross-hatch, and stipple for tone and shadow. Choose when to use different nibs of pen or brush, or even a broken twig for texture and motion. Experiment with colored india ink, magic marker or graphite for mood. Initial course materials required are: 2B pencil & sharpener, kneadable eraser, 2 Micron pens (.005 and 02), ruler or straight edge, sketchpad, and pad of Bristol Drawing paper (recommend 11”x14” Canson Bristol XL Recycled). This class is a very unique look at American History westward from the Mississippi River to California. Major historical events are chronologically tied together with personal accounts, legends and myths. Little known and rarely addressed events and characters are woven together in a classroom lecture & group discussion environment using source documents and hard copy maps. Some historical questions are addressed, but are left as “histories mysteries” since there are no complete explanations that resolve them. Facts are woven together with legends and common sense to make history come alive as you have never experienced it. This class is frequently repeated by students who find each session equally as informative as the preceding one. Students find that Quentin Thomas, a recognized historian, author and cowboy poet, is an entertaining, informative and enlightening instructor.

Georgia: a state rich with Civil War history, from the struggles for her coastal fortifications, to an attempt to steal a steam locomotive, and the many battles fought on her soil. This course will explore the various wartime actions and key participants, beginning with the January 1861 secession vote and culminating with the May 1865 capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis near Irwinville.

A History of HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport $99 01/29/2018 - 02/26/2018 5 Session(s) Mon 6:30PM - 8PM Instructor(s): Dale Hartsfield This course will study the book, “What’s In A Name?” written by Dale Hartsfield, the instructor. Mr. Hartsfield was the family spokesperson for the Hartsfield family when the City of Atlanta renamed the airport, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The controversy surrounding the name change prompted the writing of this book. The class will cover the history of the great airport and the five official names since, the airport was built in 1925. The course will also discuss “fighting city hall.” If you enjoy local history, politics, race relations and more this will be an interesting course for you. The textbook will be included in the course fee.

OLLI COURSE OFFERINGS Reflections on Elections $69 01/10/2018 - 02/28/2018 8 Session(s) Wed 9AM - 10AM Instructor(s): Quentin Thomas While many closely track contemporary elections, we seldom reflect on elections of the past. Pre-1990. This class will look at the founders debates and ideas that led to Article II of the constitution, “The Executive,” or the office of the president. Discussion will also address the personalities and challenges that were met successfully and in some cases not so successfully by Presidents including their impact on the nation, the world, and their legacies. The class will discuss notable and contentious elections. The final two sessions will be “When Presidents Lie,” and “Elections That Were Especially Consequential.” As time passes Presidents have been rated and frequently these ratings change. Efforts will be made to explain these changes. Most students will be surprised to find that there is little in Presidential politics that is new and yet there is much that might surprise them. How Minor Wars Influenced the History of the World $79 01/31/2018 - 03/28/2018 8 Session(s) Wed 1PM - 2:30PM Instructor(s): Elsa Nystrom No war is ever minor, but in the modern era, there have been a handful of conflicts that engaged a relatively small number of people, but had a lasting impact on political ideology, religious beliefs and of course weapons technology.

In the 19th century, the Crimean war and the Russo-Japanese War fall into this category as do the Balkan conflicts of 1912 and the Spanish Civil War, the Bolshevik Revolution, World War I and II and even the Arab-Israeli Wars, these smaller engagements had an insidious impact far beyond their initial scope. In this class, we will delve into the roots and results of these small scale conflicts to determine how each of them brought substantial change to the world.

Native American Voice from the Great Plains $79 02/07/2018 - 03/14/2018 6 Session(s) Wed 1:30PM - 3PM Instructor(s): This course views American Western history from the perspective of the great warrior tribes of the West from the late 1800s until present day. The class will survey many tribes such as the Commanche, the Apache, the Nez Pierce, the Kiowa, and the Navajo, with a particular focus on the Oglala Lakota Sioux on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. We will highlight the importance of great warrior Indian leaders such as Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Red Cloud, Geronimo, and Quannah Parker. Known as “the greatest light calvary in history,” we will study the battle techniques of these expert and brilliant men, and the batttles in which they demonstrated their prowess. We will also look at the spiritual beliefs and ceremonies of the tribes, and how the Plains Indians carved an existence out of a hostile environment. Finally, the class will study the successes and challenges of reservation life today.

Shakespeare wrote the words “what is past is prologue” in his play “The Tempest” in 1610. These same words are inscribed on the massive sculpture in front of the our US National Archives Building in Washington, DC where both the original US Declaration of Independence and US Constitution are housed. We will examine a variety of wrecks from a Bronze Age merchant ship to a nineteenth century passenger vessel and many more. The course also reviews the techniques used in underwater archaeology and current maritime salvage laws. We will look at the controversies between treasure hunters and archaeologists and the destructive forces that are ravaging our shared underwater heritage.

Each class will consist of a very short lecture, the students bidding and playing 8-10 pre-dealt hands, followed by hand analysis with the instructor. While emphasis is on duplicate bridge tactics and scoring, the class will also benefit the players playing social bridge. The course requires basic understanding and experience playing bridge. Two things are certain. Death and Taxes! In this class, we will address proper estate planning documents and planning for incapacity and death. How you ensure your wishes are executed with little interference and without the costs and publicity of probate? We will spend time discussing simple strategies to reduce and possibly eliminate current and future income and estate taxes. Teachers will provide a fun and interactive environment.

When it comes to planning for your retirement income, it’s easy to overlook some of the common factors that can affect how much you’ll have available to spend. If you don’t consider how your retirement income can be impacted by investment risk, inflation risk, catastrophic illness or long-term care, and taxes, you may not be able to enjoy the retirement you envision.

Instructors will give you thoughtful information to consider in an interactive and conversational environment.

Unfortunately, the country’s tax code is way too complex. So much so, that half the population pays someone to prepare their taxes. If you like to go it alone, this class will offer insight into the major schedules that the average peson might encounter. In addition to covering the basic form (1040), we will look at Schedule A (itemized deductions), Schedule B ( interest and dividends), Schedule C (self-employment), Schedule D (capital gains), Schedule E (real estate) and a few ancillary schedules that tie into one or more of the main forms. The course will also consider overlooked deductions and ways to legally minimize everyone’s tax situation.
