The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offers an impressive selection of educational and social opportunities for adults age 50 and older. With a purpose to promote lifelong learning and continued intellectual and personal growth for retirement-age individuals, OLLI has become the place for fun, interactive learning in a safe and encouraging environment. Our curriculum draws from the interests, talents and experiences of older adult learners. Academic courses are college level (without the homework, term papers and tests), and cover everything

from personal computers to fitness for life and visual arts. Social activities include various gatherings for dinner, laughter and entertainment. Every student that enrolls in our courses or programs becomes one of our OLLI members and will begin to receive our quarterly Newsletter. Our members become part of our unique OLLI family where learning is a continuous part of our culture. DIRECTOR’S NOTES Dick Harp, Director As many of you may know, we’ve been seeking ways to connect with individuals in the surrounding communities of Kennesaw in an effort to expand our outreach. With that said, it gives me great pleasure to announce our new partnership with the Booth Western Art Museum – an Affiliate to the Smithsonian Institution. The museum is widely known for its Presidential gallery, Civil War art gallery, and Sagebrush Ranch, an interactive children’s gallery. Known as the best western museum in America, the venue is located in Cartersville and is the second-largest art museum in Georgia. In fact, it covers 120,000 square feet and is the only museum of its kind in the Southeast. It also houses the largest permanent exhibition space for Western American art in the country. The fine folks at the “Booth” have graciously agreed to host five of our upcoming classes at their museum. Beginning in April, the five classes that will be held at the museum will be “Civil War in the Western Theater,” “American West Influence on Operatic and Broadway

Productions of Musical Compositions,” “Spirits of the Great American West,” “Legends and Basic Playing of the Native American Flutes” and “How to Write Historical Fiction.” Some of our finest instructors, including Michael Shaffer, Donna Angel, Quentin Thomas and Josh Langston, will teach these classes. This class is a very unique look at American History westward from the Mississippi River to California. Major historical events are chronologically tied together with personal accounts, legends and myths. Little known and rarely addressed events and characters are woven together in a classroom lecture & group discussion environment using source documents and hard copy maps. Some historical questions are addressed, but are left as “histories mysteries” since there are no complete explanations that resolve them. Facts are woven together with legends and common sense to make history come alive as you have never experienced it. This class is frequently repeated by students who find each session equally as informative as the preceding one. Students find that Quentin Thomas, a recognized historian, author and cowboy poet, is an entertaining, informative and enlightening instructor.

From the 1862 capture of Forts Henry and Donelson to 1864’s March to the Sea, many pivotal campaigns and battles during the American Civil War took place in the Western Theater. During the course, students will explore military action at Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Atlanta and many more! Students will also learn about the commanding officers involved in an area which most historians agree decided the outcome of the war. A tour of the Booth Western Art Museum is included in the course fee for this course.

American West Influence on Operatic and Broadway Productions of Musical Compositions

From Puccini’s “Girl of the Golden West” and “Ballad of Baby Doe” to “Oklahoma” and “Big Country,” we will enjoy hearing some examples of music that was written due to the influence of the culture and expansive landscape of our great Ameican West. This course will include a tour of the Booth Western Art Museum. NEW COURSE

Legends and Basic Playing of the Native American Flute $69 06/07/2018 - 06/28/2018 4 Session(s) Thu 7PM - 8:30PM Instructor(s): Carmen Gonzalez Students will learn the Legend and the History of the Native American flute. Learn how the flute was originally used by the Plains Indians and how it has once again gained popularity in the music world. Students will also be introduced to the basic steps on how to play the Native American flute. Bring your own instrument or student flutes will be available for purchase. This course will include a tour of the Booth Western Art Museum.

How to Write Historical Fiction $69 04/03/2018 - 04/24/2018 4 Session(s) Tue 5PM - 7PM Instructor(s): Josh Langston The class will focus on tips and techniques for people interested in writing fiction set in the past using real historical characters and/ or settings. Instructor Josh Langston has published five historical novels in settings as diverse as 1st Century BC Europe, Colonial America and Georgia during World War II. The course is based on research and writing practices he developed in the process. This course will include a tour of the Booth Western Art Museum.

June Conver Healing Through the Words

“A book club on steroids”

– that’s how author and new OLLI instructor June Converse describes her “Novel Dissection” class. This course is for readers, writers and aspiring writers. Students will read a bestselling novel and analyze it for all elements of good writing. June fell in love with literature when she was 15 and has been a professional writer for nearly five years. A former high school teacher, she was able to read both classics and modern fiction. When June retired from teaching, her first novel (title unreleased) unfolded during a hike. She went home that day and wrote 300 pages in one sitting. The novel is set to be released on April 15. From writing to getting published, she finds that the actual writing of a book is the easiest part. “I love words and how authors express universal emotions in a way we can all understand,” she said.

In her work, June writes about living with a mental illness, both the challenges and the victories. Choosing hope after trauma is her focus and she incorporates strategies for survival after tragedy. This angle has been cathartic as she has navigated through her personal hurdles. “Being vulnerable, authentic and honest helped me and others who feel alone in their suffering,” she said. “That understanding led me to develop a blog devoted to living and thriving with mental illness.” Many of the posts at juneconverse.com have helped people to explain their own thoughts or emotions to loved ones. She has been able to help people handle the difficult emotions they are experiencing. June believes that writing should be done for yourself and because you love it. She said, “The goal has to be to put your story on paper because you have to tell that story.”

A great way to enjoy your local landscape, history and record your travels. First class will be in the studio. We’ll start with an evaluation of the student’s basic skills, their needs and goals. We’ll review materials and a check list of essentials for painting outside. Six classes will be taught outside at various locations in the area. Each class will start with a demo stressing the basics of good outdoor painting: composition, value (tone) and color. Outdoor painting is all about capturing the light and this will be emphasized. The goal is for everyone to execute a finished painting on every session. We will paint gardens, lakes, the Chattahoochee River, street scenes, historical architecture and more. Finally, there will be a class in the studio on how to enlarge your work and tips on showing your work; including varnishing, framing and presentation. We will also review local competition opportunities and application procedures.

The American Western From John Ford to Clint Eastwood $139 04/03/2018 - 06/05/2018 9 Session(s) Tue 10AM - 12:30PM Instructor(s): George Mengert Though there are many types of American films, perhaps the most genuinely American of all is the western. Beginning in the silent film era and reaching its zenith in the 50s and 60s, the classic western dramatizes the human struggle to conquer an untamed country, the

mythic landscapes of plains and deserts and the hostility of Indians and outlaws. And built around these struggles are the primitive and personal codes of honor and justice the hero develops in order to survive in a morally ambiguous universe. This course will view and discuss some of the classics of the western genre: “Stagecoach,” “The Gunfighter,” “Shane,” “High Noon,” “The Searchers,” and “The Magnificent Seven.” Return with us, then, to those glorious days of yesteryear, when the cowboy was king and the western was among the most prolific films coming out of Hollywood. This course is Part I and will encompass films from1939-1960 and will be followed by Part II which will encompass films from 1962-2010.

The Guerrilla War in Georgia 1861-1865 $99 04/03/2018 - 05/22/2018 8 Session(s) Tue 10AM - 11:30AM Instructor(s): Gerald Flinchum From the Appalachians to the Wiregrass, it’s the little known conflict that nearly brought Georgia to the brink of anarchy. A rare look into the irregular war that began with local opposition to secession in 1861 and the passage of conscription in 1862 which led to open rebellion by 1863. This course will include an overview of the operations of state troopers and home guard militia to counter draft evasion, desertion and “Tory” activity in the state. The various guerrilla bands that existed during this period are covered in detail. The course includes a look into local history and resources.

Reflections on Elections

The class will discuss notable and contentious elections. The final two sessions will be “When Presidents Lie” and “Elections That Were Especially Consequential.” As time passes, Presidents have been rated and frequently these ratings change. Efforts will be made to explain these changes. Most students will be surprised to find that there is little in Presidential politics that is new and yet there is much that might surprise them. This is not a current events class!

Come and find out! Besides gaining an understanding of our universe, you’ll also learn to find your way around the night sky, as well as learn how to choose and use a telescope. Shaffer, working with local specialists, will lead you on tours scheduled for three consecutive Saturdays in May 2018. Walk in the fields of Resaca, including the newly opened Camp Creek site, where the armies of Major General William T. Sherman dug-in opposite the Army of Tennessee. Resaca guide Tony Patton will assist this tour. The following week, Steve Davis of Atlanta will join us as we investigate the fighting at Peachtree Creek, Ezra Church and other locations as Confederate General John Bell Hood attempted to hold the city. Finally, on May 26, noted Dalton expert Robert Jenkins will lead us on a tour of the various earthworks in and around Dalton, as we explore the opening action of the Atlanta Campaign. Iron Maidens: Iron Warships of the Confederacy $99 04/12/2018 - 05/31/2018 8 Session(s) Thu 6:30PM - 8PM Instructor(s): Gerald Flinchum A sailor stationed aboard the CSS Georgia in 1864 called her a box not a vessel, and said that conditions were so horrible, “she is not fit a command for a sergeant of marines.” Likewise, the CSS Savannah was a “floating sieve,” a miserable place to live and work. Conditions on the Confederate ironclads in Savannah were so bad that men deserted to Union occupied Fort Pulaski. Yet three ironclads were constructed at Savannah in 1864. Only one saw action, the CSS Atlanta and she only managed to fire several shots, then run aground and become captured. One example of a failed program of constructing iron warships that would never

It first began with the rescue of an American pilot by “Vietnamese partisans” and the leadeship of a diminutive man with several different names, later known as “Ho Chi Minh.” The support of the French in Vietnam would draw the United States into an enigmatic conflict that would last nearly 30 years. Learn of the first U.S. army casualty, Major Peter Dewey in September 1945, whose name still does not appear on “The Wall.” Why does the date “1960” appear on the Vietnam Campaign medal? And why one of the earliest U.S. Army advisors exclaimed, “Where the hell is Saigon?” when he received orders to Vietnam. The mysterious beginnings of American military buildup that was kept classified until after 1971. In this course we look at techniques for defeating contracts that the declarer would make if we do not defend carefully. We start by looking at the guidelines for handling specific situations on defense: opening leads, third-hand play, second-hand play and signals. We move on to look at how the defenders establish winners and take their sure tricks. Then we see how the defenders can interfere with the declarer’s plan to make the contract. Finally, we take a look at how the defenders formulate their plan and put it into action. This course does not require completion of the first two courses in the series but it is recommended that the student consider taking those classes prior to taking this class.
